- HanSolo69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5i like the encyclomedia much better.
http://www.mini-itx.com/projects/encyclomedia/ - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They sell cases for this at Fry's now. They look exactly like stereo equipment. If you've got time to spare, and an old dead CD player, I guess you could try to hack this up, but chances are, it's worth the money just to spring for the case.
(They come complete with working volume knobs, play buttons, etc., btw, which is more than you can say for this hack) - spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great idea, but it's lacking a bit in the final touches.
- ylikone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Most LCD TVs these days come with VGA-in, so you just plug in the computer like you would to a standard LCD monitor.

They start at about $50. - lazydrumhead, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I wish the thumbs were bigger.
- smock9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Has s-video TV-out really changed?
A few years ago I tried to go the "build your own Tivo box" route and while there is lots and lots of software available to do time shifting, video recording, and video playback, I was always disappointed with the last step of displaying on the TV. The video card's TV-out selection always had screwy resolutions and bad fit to the TV screen size and was never clear enough to actually see anything.
Ended up just going the Tivo route. I'd love to try again some day and make a nice living room case such as these but I'd like to know what people have done to solve the "last mile" problem of PC to TV. - SlabbaJabba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The "TV Out" on cards are usually useless. S-Video to a TV doesn't look good at all. Most HTPC users are using the VGA out or DVI-HDMI. There are even video cards out now that are ready for HDCP via HDMI, if you are planning for the future (flags, BR, HDDVD).
- SoulMaster2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Personally I'd just get a modded Xbox for a living room, it plays CDs, DVDs, and can stream stuff over a network, and it's cheaper than a pc
- Teaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Half the fun of a HTPC is actually building it and messing around with it. And of course the Xbox can't view/record TV, which is why Frodo (XBMC) created MediaPortal ( http://mediaportal.sf.net )
- LaundroMat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's a bit noisy though.
- exobyte, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Xbox Media Center.
- rockforever, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yea, it either has to be brand spankin new, or crazy old.
- turbodigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1kinda neat...but the cd player is sort of dated looking though.
- dragons5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dang.. that one is a no brainer (but still good job) I was thinking it was one of the bigger shelf stereos.... now that would be awesome.
- n3tfury, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2i like that, nice job. too bad it's not a real HT until you go 16x9.
- iFrank, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Yours is nicer than his.
