- citrusfizz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25i am going to cast mine in jello
- Pas3n7, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19I'm going to cast mine in carbonite!
- Dragular, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Bah, environmentalists.
I'm sure the scorpions were raised in open fields where they were allowed to uhh... sting people (I dunno wtf scorpions do) until they died of natural causes, and then their bodies are "preserved" in paperweight form.
Which I also believe we should do with humans... that'd be sweet to have a grandma paperweight! - JakeMcMahon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13You guys are so behind on the times. I cast a mac case out of peanut butter way back in the 90's.
- chris302, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10a friend of mine did this to his thumb drive, he put it in silicone. Didnt work out quite as well but it looks semidecent. It also bounces
- MikeEnIke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Umm, wouldn't it overheat? I realize they don't put off much heat but if it's completely sealed I can't imagine that would be good for it. I could be wrong though.
- Dragular, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9preserving something that's dead is wrong per basic human decency? I thought we did that with a lot of stuff. Is Taxidermy the work of the devil now? I mean hell. If I see a scorpion in my house the thing gets killed. Who cares what happens to it post-death?
- CubeFarmDrone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I don't think this mod is very revolutionary considering you can probably buy a clear thumb drive. The CD desk lamp he made is pretty crafty though.

Thanks for all of the comments. I do agree that the entire project could have been executed better with the lanyard. I wear the thing around my neck every day, and it hasn't shown signs of cracking yet. I haven't had any troubles transferring files, or using it over the past month or so (as far as heat goes). - Roger, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14Sorry, not even an HIYO! can save that comment.
- jimbo92107, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Looks pretty good.
My own attempt to encase my USB pendrive in kiln-fired clay was not so successful.
Nor were my Silly Putty or Play Dough projects much better. But Silly Putty bounces great!
The pendrive frozen in ice worked for a few minutes, then shorted out for some reason.
Embedded in a popsicle, it tasted great, but frankly didn't work at all.
For my next project, I think I'll embed a pendrive in a seven-foot paper mache dragon. Bet that'll wow 'em at the cafe! - burke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I think there's so little heat it wouldn't have any problem dissipating through the resin. I'm no thermodynamics.... guy, though, so I could be wrong.
- Hackintosh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Hm... considering doing something like this to my Sony drive... the casing is ass-ugly
- tavisjohn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Nice one! The only thing I would have done differently would be the lanyard clip. Instead of drilling a hole, I would have placed the end of it in the clear material, or through the circuit board before imbeding in clear resin. That way it will not crack, and it will look cooler. ;)
- deut, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I like it. I've got a stick in a similar predicament. I may have a go at swapping the LED fro a nice blue one before I cast it though.
Nice mod. - ekeup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If your comment has no point besides "cool" or 'no digg', or anything non-beneficial expect to get buried.
- beasty_dave_Mk2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"...This caused the top surface to become mottled and somewhat sticky..."
wouldn't that mean the resin would be "sticky" on the inside of the casting, against the internals?
Esp. if any heat is involved...
cool idea tho...think I'm gonna go cast a giant cockroach surfin' on my new stick. - Pas3n7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have a Cruizer Micro, and it come cast in a clear, hard rubber. I'm just guessing, but I doubt there is much of a difference in heat dispersion. Either way it should transfer heat just fine through the plug itself, and the computer USB port shouldn't get hot enough to be a problem.
- Jakomcbean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Always the same with so many of these mods. Great idea poor execution. Great job up to the drilled hole that looks like he did it with a hot poker and the lanyard that looks like he found it on the street. I mean he spent all that time setting up the jig for the cast.... casting in multiple settings.Very nice job up to this point. Its not easy to cast that stuff without getting allot of bubbles. But then .. hmm let me just drill this with my bob the builder drill and I'll just stick this on with some glue.
- efisher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If I recall correctly there is some sort of exhibit touring the country dead people preserved in resin(not a solid block, more like what you see at the deli with those platters of food on display). The bodies have been dissected to varying degrees and posed for display.
- beelz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2plasti-dip is cool but not clean anyone know a site i can buy clear casting resin online?
- tavisjohn, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7So I take it you are a vegetarian? You do not eat meat, wear any leather clothing, or drive any cars, or even kill the bugs that enter your home.
If you eat Veggies I have news for you... It is MURDER!!!!

(I point all Veggy Lovers to that song, I find it amusing) - Vortech89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was wondering the same thing when I read this. It could depend on how fast the drive is, or if it's constantly being accessed.
- the1casey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, cool cd lamp.
Also love his snazzy Star Wars poster. :P - zweben, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Haha, the before pic looks pretty much like my flash drive. I covered mine in duct tape. Not because it was broken, just because it was a cheap drive and I wanted it to look ghetto so no one would want to take it.
- zmigliozzi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I wouldn't be suprsiesd if this has or will be on hack-a-day.
- baronvonrolo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The CD Lamp is a stroke of genius, the pen drive is... well a pen drive really.
- drag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2More then likely he didn't mix it up well enough before poring.
I've messed around with epoxes a bit and this sort of thing happens. The reason it's a bit sticky is probably because parts of the goop didn't get mixed with the catalyst and thus didn't harden.
Ya just have to mix REALY REALY well. Much more then it seems like at first. It's worth experimenting a bit beforehand so that you can do it right when it's important to do it right. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm going build a computer case around mine.
- anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1This is a useful mod technique, I (and many others) use USB sticks as keychains... that resin looks durable :D
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Funny I have that same Antec case. And I also have the same problem he has (bent in the middle and protruding)
- Jakomcbean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Russ,
I didn't want to seem to harsh before sorry, you should be in good shape. That is polyester resin so once you catalyze it it really shouldn't crack unless you used to much catalyst. Also most heat related failures are due to the heat causing the surface mounted items to lift off the circuit board when the solder is weakened or melted (not talking processors or IC's here). I would think the embedding in resin would hold things in place pretty well no matter how hot things got. I bet we see a similar looking mass produced flash drive soon. - sephiroth965, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh wow those two projects are by ther same guy? He's pretty good. But this mod is still old news.
- kingamoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hey pmullen, why did you get burried? Sometimes, I don't understand why this burry thing is there? I bet I'll get burried for saying this as well.
- spacenettnet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that is an awesome, I love both the cd lamp and the awesome usb drive. Kudos for creativity
- Randude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Neat idea. I wonder if heat is a factor at all once it is cast? It also makes me wonder what else could be cast in this?
- DoMaGe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If u got the roaches... might as well use them.
- DocChaos, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4This is quite nice.
I tried using my 512mb stick a few days ago, and as I tried to plug it in, it just slid into the housing.
Looks like I might have to be doing this myself.
Digg+ - stokestack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I totally agree. Not to slam the guy, but that step was unfortunate.
- acruxksa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can see a whole new batch of mods coming our way. blue LED's, stobes, pretty much every cellphone mod that involves lights will probably be applied to USB pen drives now. I can't wait for the day when some crazy modder tells us how he/she managed to hook up a 300mw green laser to their 1gb usb drive. :):):)
Digg, just because he was the first I've read about. I have a feeling it's only going to get more common though. - vanderaerden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i used plasti-dip on mine. works great. you can pick it up (not the spray can but the dipping kind) at any ACE hardware...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Not a bad mod.... Although, I can't wait for an idiot to post with 'Look i did the same thing with my floppy disk! I took the enclosure off, and sealed it in clear stuff! Isnt it awsome looking? and btw... anyone know why it isnt working?'

- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -12/+12"... used to make paperweights out of scorpions ..."
Thats damn cruel. - c0nundrum, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0actually this does work fairly well. I've made LED flashing powerweights this way and so far no complaints :)
you do have to be careful to pour the resin in layers, not all in one go. I learned this the hard way (don't ask!!)
-A - sneed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That looks pretty cool. One of the best usb stick mods i've seen so far.
- knifin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Niffty guide, good project for shop class.
- superdrea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0that's ok. one of the guys that i used to work with broke his, and wrapped it in duct tape. now that's indestructible.
- outlaw67, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0That lamp is too cool... I'll have to get the saws out...
- ifonly, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1woot hes got the same case as me, I
