- theartofennui, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17ugliest mod ever
- goodnewsevery1, on 10/12/2007, -14/+20Wait wait...Apple did something wrong??? Quick find a way to blame Microsoft.
- 4850lu73, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10It's not meant to be flashy, it's meant to be functional
- makenai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Um.. and I meant to say, or else the Thinkpad's reception is just really really good. :)
- BadgerOU, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I have a newer 12" powerbook, and I get pretty good reception. I have some friends who have the previous generation powerbooks, and they don't get very good reception though -- maybe he's thinking of that?
- beejay54, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12Powerbooks have terrible wi-fi reception? Really? Mine seems to be pretty good.
- TimeForGuinness, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8IMHO, a good mod would have been both flashy and functional
- makenai, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I have a 15" powerbook and an IBM T42 thinkpad. Upstairs is a Linksys WRT54G router. I can use the thinkpad downstairs anywhere withouth a problem - but with the powerbook, I basically have to sit near the stairs or the reception is useless. I'd have to agree that the reception seems to be significantly worse, for me at least.
- digg_diggler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Anyone have a link on how to add an antenna to a 15"? Or do they just mean buying a new pcmia card?
- jmmb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I noticed on the MacBook Pro that there is a plastic looking cover over the antenna. Maybe someone should make a antenna mod. Not sure anyone would pay for the mod, but they might.
- Psykus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Anyways does anyone actually use a delete key except for ctrl + alt + del? I know I haven't. (That isn't meant as an attack against MS, it is my actual personal experience.)"
Delete to erase to the right of the cursor, backspace to delete to the left. - Bootes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Uhm I agree that the PowerBooks have worse reception than many PCs. I've seen PCs get reception when my PowerBook picks up nothing.
Complaints about keyboards/screens and delete key are crap though. The keyboard does not destroy the screen. People were claiming that the screen would show squares from picking up oil on the keyboard keys. My PowerBook is perfectly fine and I've never used anything to cover my keyboard.
Delete key. Technically there is a delete key, but I know what you mean. :) Anyways does anyone actually use a delete key except for ctrl + alt + del? I know I haven't. (That isn't meant as an attack against MS, it is my actual personal experience.) - zachtib, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3My thinkpad gets much better reception than other laptops my friends own...
- ravuya, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The Titaniums acted like a Faraday cage, which is why they generally had worse wireless reception. The problem appears to have been fixed on modern Aluminum units, though I never remember a 12" Titanium being released.
- bloqmon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8wow...i didnt know apple came out with pbooks that big. you must have something to prove eh? ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i dont get very good reception on my PB compared to my sony vaio, but i would never do that to it....
- erichola, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I have PowerBook 15", iBook 12", PSP.
What ever happened, this is so obvious that
PowerBook has extremely bad wifi reception compare to iBook or PSP.
How about MacBookPro? I still don't know about it...
- imightbewrong, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3OMG what have they done!
- innuendo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Never had any signal problems with my 12' pbk.
- adamS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Likewise. Talk about an unqualified statement.
- mootrealm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Function (fn) + Delete = Forward delete = Delete key on PC. Hitting the delete key is the equivalent of the Backspace key on PC.
Older power books also had older Airport cards in addition to any titanium reception issues. New powerbooks get fabulous reception. In a local coffee house there is a side room that PC owners use because they can not get reception. I get the room to myself because I can get reception. - tobsterius, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5My original Titanium powerbook had horrible reception... buy my 12" has pretty decent reception... Anyone know how the Macbook Pros are with the reception? I know apple moved the antenna, wondering if it made a difference.
- r00kie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2this mod would only work with older PowerBooks the new ones and the MacBook Pro have fully internal airport cards. (real pain to swap... good thing they hardly ever fail.) I have compared several of my iBooks and my PowerBooks and it always seems to be that the iBook has better reception. aluminum is still better than Ti.
- henryaj, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Yeah, my 12" Powerbook has excellent reception... much better than my friend gets when he brings his (plastic-shell) Dell round here, or with my brother's Nintendo DS. No digg.
- jaspinDroid, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5The only comment:
"kida001 says:
Who says that powerbooks have "terrible wi-fi reception"?? I have a powerbook and get amazing reception. I live in an apartment complex and pickup wifi from floors away.
That, is the most disgusting mod I have ever seen to a apple. I would never bring that in public.
April 1, 2006" - kida001, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Yeah, who says that powerbooks have bad wi-fi. I live in an apartment complex and have never had a problem picking up signals from 3 floors away. Its a dirty dirty lie.
- wolever, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I've had two 12" PowerBooks over almost three years. The signal isn't perfect, but if you know anything about setting up your router (eg: chose an empty channel, don't position your antenna like bunny-ears, etc) it really isn't a problem. I can go anywhere in my house with my PB and get good signal from my WRT54G in the basement.
- TomSawyer, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7If somebody out there thinks this mod is necessary because "everyone knows PowerBooks have terrible wi-fi reception," let me be the first to tell you that you have a defective product. I own a PowerBook and while YMMV, I'm not in the "everyone" group.
- bedouin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2My 12" PowerBook doesn't get bad reception, but my G3 iBook could see access points the whole way down the block.
- ZachPruckowski, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5My iBook's reception is amazing. I wonder why the PBs are so bad (if they are)
- asiafish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have both 12" and 15" PowerBooks, a G5 iMac and a G4 Mac Mini, all with Airport Extreme. Oh yeah, like an earlier poster, I also used to own an IBM ThinkPad T42p. The ThinkPad truly does get exceptional WiFi reception, better than any other computer I've ever owned.
The rest of the lot are what I would consider average. In addition to the 2Wire router in my office, the Mini and the iMac also pick up (rather well) at least four other networks from surrounding offices, as do both of my PowerBooks.
The 12" PowerBook gets slighly better range than the 15", usually a difference of 2 bars instead of one when used at the opposite corner of my home from my Apple Airport Extreme base station. Both get a good strong signal everywhere else in the house, and are entirely acceptable without cuting holes into the case. - t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Same, no problems here with my 12"'s airport reception.
Oh, and personally, I'd cut the hole in the battery's aluminium plate, not the powerbook. - yourmomsbox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2If it were that much of a problem, wouldn't it have easier just to get one of these?
http://www.dlink.com.sg/products/?pid=175 - diskopo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5I have an iBook and a Powerbook, and the iBook does get better receptioin. I think it may have to do with the casing. The iBook's is plastic whre the Powerbook's is not. The material may interfere with the signal.
- rye425, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4"Cuts" on my $2000 Apple Powerbook, your joking right?
- bwjacket, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Wow, this is stupid. Besides, I can connect to my airport express with my 12" from the parking lot outside my dorm.
- kalisphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Delete key? I have two ;) I never use the forward-delete key, though. Never have, really, even when I was using PCs...
But you can also type, what is it, Command+Delete on a 'book to get a forward-delete? Personally, I use the back-delete and Option+Delete (delete the last word) a lot more than I ever used forward-delete. After all, if you're typing and make a mistake, the mistake is behind the cursor, not in front of it. Unless you're plagiarizing an essay by rewriting it in your own words ;-)
I don't really get this complaint :-/ - senseigmg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2my 12" has ok reception. I'm considering the quickertek antenna; much better than this ugly mod.
- costoa, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Agreed. He should've used that metal based duct tape to match the PB's case. =)
- audible, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2i didn't know i had a reception problem until now.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Yeah, what the heck? I have awesome wi-fi reception on my PowerBook. Congratulations to the link for finding a problem to a solution.
- tomzer1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Regarding 12" PowerBook's reception, I've had 'em for three years now. Never had a problem getting reception anywhere in my house, yard, or in public hotspots. Perhaps the modder should find a spot with better WiFi transmision and not have to use that butt-ugly mod.
Regarding Fisherman's comment:
"Oh yeah, and no Delete key. WTF?"
Obviously he doesn't own or has never seen a PowerBook. Delete key. Upper right corner, dude. Total hater. - clickmyface, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Yeah i'm really sorry you don't understand the difference between "delete" and "backspace" man.
You're like the people who say Macs cant use two button mice.
My PB screen is fine. When you close the lid you can look between the crack and see through to the otherside.
I get full reception on campus wireless (not just bars, but actually maxing out the up/down)
latest 12" Powerbook. - fungifred, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2What idiot cuts notches in a PowerBook no matter how small?
- thelastknowngod, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2if this dumbass has bad reception then he should get a better router. that would help out much more than this thing. that is seriously the stupidest thing i have ever seen.
- corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2The old 15in powerbooks had terrible reception, but all the new ones work wonderfully. I don't know what you're talking about.
- pozdena, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8Seriously, I've never heard of this. I can be well into my backyard or my neighbors' side of our duplex, with my 15" Powerbook, and still have a decent signal.
But if this hack helps someone out, great! - raygan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Yeah, sorry but I have to agree. Not that I wouldn't want the option for an external antenna, but this is a kind of needless hack, and pretty ugly. I can't imagine doing this unless my wifi reception was absolutely terrible in a situation where I couldn't possibly get a better router. My Powerbook lying flat on a table is more important to me than an it getting an extra bar or two of wifi reception.
- rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1What some people will put up with to be fashionable. Pathetic.
