- theciuffo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+39I think this is how they made the Peach picture change into the Bowser picture in Mario 64 :P
- spinningobo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28Here you can see it slowly transform as it is scaled down:
http://www.ianrowland.com/MiscPages/Mrangryandmrscalm2.html - robotexplorer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26thats amazing, make bets with your friends if they are far away from the screen. ask them which is the angry side and tell them they are crazy and they should look closer.
- Ralph_Wiggum, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27So it's magic, gotcha.
- brucebeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21this is VERY cool!! good find!
and it got dugg effect already..
http://www.duggmirror.com/mods/Cool_Optical_Illusion_6/ - Wavey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17That's really cool, and I had to use Google to find out how it works:
"One image was high-pass filtered (≥ 8 cpd), the other low-pass filtered (≤ 2 cpd).
With normal vision, the higher spatial frequency image ‘wins’. When blurring the image (by whatever means, walking away in this case!), only the low-pass image remains."
I took my contact lenses out just to see if that blurring would do the trick also. Yep. - znxster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15That is one of the most impressive optical illusions I have seen in a long time!
(PS: I think you wanted the Science category.. ?) - tlogank, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14and I am guessing that blueRAP is about 12 years old...
- tidalwav1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13More images like this one...
http://cvcl.mit.edu/gallery.htm - mikeman8905, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Looks like their server has gone down the tubes.
- chaosmachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11it's simple. the fine details become invisible at a distance, and the opposite effect allows the blurred detail to resolve into new facial features.
- MaNiaC510, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11wtf... but.. how.
- samnmax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9A paper was presented at SIGGRAPH this year on creating this effect.
http://cvcl.mit.edu/hybridimage.htm
They also have some more examples of this illusion. - azntiger1000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10One sorta looks like Angelina Jolie
- RandomSkratch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I didn't think burning servers were illusions.
- dignation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6That's so cool. I can change it by taking my glasses off or by squinting my eyes.
- ArmandoM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I believe it was hit by a truck
- dwnwrd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I can see my nose.
- bakagaigin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It also works iif you just blur your eyes.
- sreenisatish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Try editing the image in photoshop or gimp and apply the blur filter. You'll see the effect!
- Recluse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I can't see anything if I cross my eyes.
- breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You can achieve the same effect by squinting your eyes so everything gets blurry.
- EochaidRiata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I saw some ads in Glasgow on Hope Street that used the same technique.
- CiXeL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"The explanations range from scientific theories about human vision to curious supposition about Mona Lisa's identity and feelings. Professor Margaret Livingstone of Harvard University has argued that the smile is mostly drawn in low spatial frequencies, and so can best be seen with one's peripheral vision[6]. Christopher Tyler and Leonid Kontsevich of the Smith-Kettlewell Institute in San Francisco believe that the changing nature of the smile is caused by variable levels of random noise in human visual system."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mona_lisa - imikedaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Someone lacks a sense of humor I see. Obviously he was joking.
- lunarworks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"Please contact the billing dept".
Digg should start a fund for overrun web quotas. - Abjure, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Oh noes the tubes are suspended!
- irie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Server , K.O'ed.
- dlprager, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Hmm... I can't access the link. Says the account has been suspended (as of 11:10pm PDT).
- iSlayer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Account seems to be suspended....the digg effect at its best.
- jameshales, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good idea!
Blur it with a 10px radius, or even zoom out on it a bit, and it works perfectly. - cortez_a, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Coral Cache:
http://www.blogiseverything.com.nyud.net:8080/interesting/cool-optical-illusion/ - sniper6121, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Way cool if you squint your eyes you don't have to get up and walk away from the computer... yeah I know I'm lazy... haha
- boyinshortpants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here it is again. Not yet dead via traffic.
http://www.ianrowland.com/MiscPages/Mrangryandmrscalm.html - mcprogrammer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4That's the point of the illusion. At a distance, they switch...
- PaulOwen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Doesn't work particularly well for me either.
I can see what the intended effect is meant to be though from @spinningobo's link. - eurocrisp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i cant see much of a change from a distance, but if I squint till i almost cant see it works perfectly. very strange.
- bSimms, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2http://www.duggmirror.com/mods/Cool_Optical_Illusion_6/
- bbeahm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That is F-ing scary........and cool
- atezun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'd also like to point out if you happen to wear progressive lenses all you need to do is tilt your head up and down to see the change
- OropheR, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Does not work on me...me runs to my optician again.
- jverdi, on 05/11/2009, -3/+3A truck which, as it approached, resembled a dolphin more and more.
- Codee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Kinda' creepy.
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1And if you look at it from about 4 feet away, they both look like equal, neutral faces.
- morcheeba, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Here's their sigraph presentation, with more examples and an explanation of how the technique works. There's a neat practical application at the end.
http://cvcl.mit.edu/hybrid/Talk_Hybrid_Siggraph06.pdf - dwnwrd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1See, I knew there was SOME reason to get out of my chair for a minute!
- stephenwq, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Yes, and everyone knows where to go when that happens:
http://www.duggmirror.com/mods/Cool_Optical_Illusion_6/ - kodeiko, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Dang just looking at the images gives me the creep.
But it works, so dugg. - Bisqwit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Very interesting. Probably both of the images have two photos in them, merged using FFT; the leftside one has angry encoded in high-frequency components and calm in low-frequency components, and the rightside one has angry encoded in low-frequency components and calm in low-frequency components.
When you look at the image from farther, you can no longer distinguish high-frequency details, but you can see the low-frequency details only. - miaw82, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2haha.. the digg effect could make an account suspended because those website are using shared hosting package. if they are using dedicated server or vps. there will no any problem.
