- Petrarch1603, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I like this article and would like to see more articles that report on field recording.
- kinkysexradio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4For 1000 bucks, I think I could find a few non-DIY solutions.
Example: A marantz recorder ($500) and literaly 100's of mics with built in pre-amps for less than $500. Would fit in a purse or fanny pack. I use this all the time for field recording and get great sound.
But, still - good job for the DIY obsessed. - thejokell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Or a M-Audio MicroTrack 24/96 (which will do DVD quality audio) for $325.

Or you could get a Marantz PMD-660 for USD$500. - TheKillDoctor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The advantage of this DIY setup is recording length, 6 hours. I've used a smaller setup for sampling that could only do an hour at a time.
- spyhunter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For $1000, you could buy a good laptop which would allow you to apply realtime effects and edit as well as record, and you wouldn't have to mod anything. Recent laptops are getting much better battery life; mine gets 6 hours. With a USB add-on you could record 24-bit 96Khz DVD-audio quality. It wouldn't fit in a pocket but neither does this Frankenstein's monster of a device.
- SirPhatteus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2A cool idea, but there are many viable options that are better suited to the task. I agree about the Marantz products- and almost all of the feedback I've heard on them is positive.
There's the 660's big brother, the 670, too, which you could get up and running in a rig < $1000.
Also, check out M-Audio's offering, the MicroTrack. Cool *****.

For extended battery life, there are a number of DIY pages on the web [link to own site omitted]. I once built a D-Cell sled to power a Sony D-8 for like 15 hours. And by the way, that setup was also under a grand.
And, all the above can record at far better quality settings than 16/44.1.
Happy recording! - drowned_in_milk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a pretty standard stealth taping rig for taping concerts. The new MicroTrack 24/96 looks destined to replace the JB3 though, I'd say. And AT 853's seem like better mics than the CSB's.
- thydzik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1interesting article, wish it said a little bit about what field recording is.
and didn't have all the same pictures - tylerni7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You plug a mic into the line out port, and go to record with iPod Linux. It is a stereo output, and it can work as a stereo input as well.
- tallin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have the Edirol UA-25 mentioned in the article. That thing may be seem a bit bulky for field recording, but it is built like a freaking tank and can withstand a good amount of abuse. I use it for both home and field recording.
To get a bit more technical, at home for any V/O I might do, I have an Aphex 204 exciter and a Symetrix 528E vocal processor feeding into my UA-25. I'd like to get a shotgun mic for field recording (and some V/O work at home), but for now my home mics are an Electro-Voice RE27 N/D and an MXL V63M, both of which have served me well. Great equipment. - zachg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21.) Crappy mics like the igriffin lapel are not suitable for field recordings, things like that are meant for taking notes and such.
2.) For $350 you can buy the Sony Mz-M100--or wait a few months and get the rh1 for $300--which uploads direct to the computer via usb. It comes with a decent single point stereo mic. Spend one hundred dollars and you get 20, or so, 1gb Hi-Md disc, that can hold a little more than an hour of uncompressed audio. Or, record in hi-Sp mode--in order to upload though you'll need the Rh1--and you get a little over three hours. MD recorders fit in a pocket, even if you wear tight pants. - Waredgo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I use a Sony MD recorder and stereo condenser mic...just used it today as a matter of fact. Quality is great, ultra-portable and get a few hours recording with a couple spare batteries and MD's.
- bnoble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+144.1Khz/16bit is SO 1979.

(really good inexpensive mic for field recordings, imo.) - happbando, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1if i remember correctly, an ipod running ipod linux with a lapel mic can record 16 bit/44.1 kHz for a hell of a lot less.
- av1d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah, it's called a Pentium 300 MHZ+ with a standard sound card, a decent mic, a fairly large hard drive and an audio recording program. Shouldn't cost more than $200 tops, thats including the $80-ish mic.
You can't do much editing on it, but it will record like a charm... even on a slower proc. - DJS2005, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Why not get an ipod 30gig with an "lapel mic" from Griffin? 379$CAD plus whatever that toy mic costs ( italk ). That miniplug to optical of his looks expensive. Unless quality is a lot worse. The storage is definatly there though , 30 or 60g
