- generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29I wish I had my own Internet. I have to share with everyone else.
- rbrodkin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17If I need to dedicate a computer to it, why not just use something like Asterisk or Trixbox?
- cbsmith55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14That's pretty cool but you are screwed if you have to use 911 service.
- Asdfglpwglion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10See if you can have someone send you an internet - but it could take a few days to get to you if the tubes are clogged with movies.
- MasteRR, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I think I would rather it be the site going down than my internet. I would hate for every page I visit to load in 45 seconds. I thought I gave that up 6 years ago.

he's not talking about Christmas... he's talking about December 31st, the day which skype has promised free nationwide calling until. there's no guarantees of what happens after that.. - JRitze, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12I really hope it is my internet but It took 45 seconds to load :(

*wants a free year too* - zaren, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8So... what standards based software do you suggest?
That's free...
and runs on any computer...
and allows free voice calls over to or from any computer to or from any telephone in the world?
I don't use Skype personally (POTS still works just fine for me out in the hinterlands of southeast Michigan), but it seems to me that until *you*, Oh Bearer of Standards, name something else, Skype appears to BE the standard in cross-platform VOIP software. - kablamo1234, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I recently received a CD in the mail from AOL. Apparently it has the entire World Wide Webs on it. I would be happy to send it to you as I already have all the Internets on my computer. I downloaded them from Mozilla corporation, It only took about 10 min.
- whoZatGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Quit posting your lyrics site spam.
I see the referrer ID for all these lyrics pages you post is golani51 in my adblock items for the worthless lyics page you keep linking too. Is this you to from Australia? I see an ebay account to... gotta remember to change those names.

Your site is a spam site I'm going to see if I can get Google to take it out of the index. The number in your URL is all that matters. The rest is there to fool the search engines. Probably copied all the content from some other site.
http://lyricslist.com/lyrics/artist_albums/425/this_site_sucks_ass.php - mindovermatter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5States like California are trying to pass legislation to force VOIP services to have instant 911 integration -- you'll most likely see that sooner than later.
- huffapuff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7That's great, until December 2006 comes around (ohhh, that's like next month!!)
- piyo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@zaren:
http://www.gizmoproject.com/ - SteelChicken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4half the time I use skype the quality is so bad I have to hang up and use either a land line or cell. its not ready for prime time. free is useless if quality and reliability aint there.
- rajulkabir, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6This has got to be one of the stupidest things I've ever seen.
The guy goes to all the trouble to demonstrate home phone wiring, set up all kinds of crap on a Linux box and so on, and then connects it to SKYPE?? An expensive, proprietary system with mediocre audio quality and extremely limited customisability.
For far less money and effort, you could just buy a little SPA-1001 box, configure it to use your www.voipcheap.com account, plug it in in the basement, and be on your way. No software to run, no USB hassles, no worries over what happens next time Skype decides to change how their software works.
5 free hours of calls a week and 1 cent/minute after that. Pick up an incoming line from any of a zillion providers for a flat monthly rate, lower than Skype's. - cmdrNacho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2whats a good solution for the standards stuff. is it Asterisk. Also can anyone provide me with the link to the Skypmate software so I can read about it. I googled it and the link appeared dead. Is it still supported ?
- FrostySol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2True, but you could always just pick up a cell phone. It doesn't even need to have service - as long as it's got charge it will connect to 911 (that's why you can donate your cell when you're done with it).
- dmurray14, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3There is a kludge solution for asterisk that allows interfacing to Skype, but it's kind of a hack. Skype just doesn't want their system to be open, unfortunately.
- Calypsoaf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I use Skype to call home from Japan, it is 2 cents a minute. Compaired to the 17-25 cents a minute they charge from a regular providor out here I think the costs are by far comperable. I really doubt they will charge that much higher for stateside calls than what we already pay for international fees.
- Chip_whitly, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Skype isn't going to be free anymore when December 2006 rolls around.
I wonder how much they will charge.... - dingletec, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is pretty cool as a project, and I was in the process of duplicating it when the gizmo project came out. Prepaid incoming and outgoing calls to landlines, SIP compliant with simple integration to my Asterisk server. And now apparently there is support for Google Talk in Asterisk.
If I knew anyone who regularly uses Skype that I wanted to talk to, it would be cool to have it as well. I didn't give up my landline, so my system isn't meant as a replacement for local phone service, but to extend it where ever I go through SIP adapters or software phones. If there were a Skype module for Asterisk, or a service I could run on my server that allowed call routing between the two, I would be more interested in Skype. - joerod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2even though its not going to be free out going for much longer its still cheaper to have a skype in number then it is to have a VoIP or lan line phone.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4What's the change in the electric bill by leaving a new machine running 24/7? Less than the phone bill, but once Skype starts charging it will be close.
- zaren, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@FuzzyCat:
"You really didn't even bother googling did you."
Why should I bother googling? You, my dear cat, are the one yalping about standards. I'm accepting Skype - the system with over 5 million active users - as the de facto standard for this subsection of the industry. The responsibility rests on your hairy shoulders to provide examples. It's not up to me to do your legwork. - rajulkabir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@strictnein: Of course they do. There are many vendors offering free SIP minutes in the USA, and without the threat to withdraw the service just 6 weeks from now. There are various hoops to jump through but they're nothing compared to the hassle of getting this Skypenstein monster working.
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't forget to calculate in the $10-18/mo. (depending on your locality) to keep a box running 24/7. When you consider the energy costs, one of the VoIP providers that uses a lower-power box may actually cost less, and you can just wire on the router/adapter to your existing extension wiring, provided you disconnect your house from the phone company at the protector box.
- dingletec, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@rajulkabir
The value is in the knowledge and experience of doing something interesting. I think this guy is awesome, I'm glad he shared, and he earns a couple of extra geek points from me - stoppedcode12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You can save yourself the hassel because there are computer-free skype handsets that connects directly to a voip router. http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/news/2148056/skype-cuts-computer
- sashilover2007, on 12/07/2007, -0/+0Good stuff, but a bit complex for me, a Windows use, I prefer to use PrettyMay call center for Skype which is a Skype add on, with it, to set up a Skype phone system will be extremely easy, highly recommed.
http://www.prettymay.net - masskurec, on 03/03/2009, -0/+0skype = cia
http://xptweak.net - L0t3k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is nice because I already use an established skype number, and it works nicely. I don't have to go searching for another provider with a local number and switch everything over. What's more, I already have a linux box running 24/7 as my mythtv rig. If I can do this on top of that, I've already got most of what i need. This is pure "value-add" to my current network.
- thiru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm.. good project. But is it worth the hassle? If skype changes their FREE policy then this will be problem. I would prefer unlocked ATA with free VOIP providers.
- crossers, on 07/18/2008, -0/+0good project, but I have question is sound good?

O RLY? - FuzzyCat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2
You really didn't even bother googling did you. If you'd taken at least *some* time and used google you'd have found quite a lot of stuff. You appear to be expecting a single application name/product name to replace skype. The point is, with standards, you don't have to only have one application from a single vendor. Things like SIP, H.323 (eww) are standardised protocols, which means you can use one client on linux another on windows and another under OSX - You get those choices - that's the whole point.
Try here as a starting point:
http://www.voip-info.org/wiki-Open+Source+VOIP+Software
Which lists a heapful of standards based clients and servers.... oh and because we're using standards there are lots of providers too that will provide inbound and outbound calling too, from either POTS lines or pure VOIP.
"Skype appears to BE the standard in cross-platform VOIP software."
Absolute bollocks, you have no clue. - strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Because those are PBX replacements. Do they offer free nationwide calling (for the time being, at least)?
- renowayne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0It won't be much, but another bill none-the-less. We have enough tech bills allready for goodness sake. Nothing is free, there's always some kind of catch lying in the fine print. But, nobody reads the fine print, so they end up being very dissatisfied, and feel like they were cheated somehow.
- KIERANMULLEN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1pointless project.
With Gizmoproject.com (or any other open voip provider) you can use free call in PSTN numbers all over the world from sipbroker.com
http://www.sipbroker.com/sipbroker/action/pstnNumbers
This is really killer! Although most companies offer dedicated call in nubers for like $30 a year.
KieranMullen - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1cut left but it's diggs fault, so repair this ***** thing noobs
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1+ electricity bill
and when smps / hdd goes down it is dead.
still cool - caulktel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Well, all I have to say to you is, you must have a crappy Internet connection. I have been using it for years to talk to family members all over the west coast of the USA and around the world. I have found the audio quality to be much better than POTS. Maybe you should consider getting away from that old dial up and going with broadband.
- rmjb, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Cool
- XSforMe, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4"Skype isn't going to be free anymore when December 2006 rolls around."
source? - FuzzyCat, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6
Seriously, please, stop ***** using Skype.
You wouldn't need to fart around half as much if you stopped using this propriatory ***** and used STANDARDS based stuff. You know the thing that makes using STANDARDS based stuff so good? It's the fact that it's STANDARDS based, so when manufacturers make stuff, it's STANDARDized so it interoperates... - And0, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1@Madh2orat, Skype is free until December 2006.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1OK I know you guys don't want to hear this :) but even if I love these articles how to reuse old stuff and build something trivial I want to notice one thing. If you have enough IQ then youcan figure out everything in this setup without any help or howto and if not then better if you don't do it cuz accidently you the wrong cable and end up in the graveyard :)
Damn it's not better than "how to setup a jukebox with winamp", sorry but my 8 year old sis could do this, sorry Andrew but u got owned. - Madh2orat, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2And why does X-mas make this bad?
