- bzaks, on 05/19/2009, -1/+69Needs more pictures... I'd like to get a better look at the whole project. :-(
- strawnj, on 05/19/2009, -2/+29It would not be that hard to build
- inactive, on 05/20/2009, -2/+25Core2quad with a GTX 280? What is this, 2008?
- sassafras1232, on 05/20/2009, -1/+19As cool as this is (and don't get me wrong, it's pretty dang cool) I think they could have done a much better job with the layout. The cable/hose routing is too random and there are too many small exposed wires. Get them all straight and either lined up, tied down, or in a casing of some sort.
Also, doesn't anyone make a watercooled powersupply yet? (Yes, I'm too lazy to google it.) - kitsua, on 05/20/2009, -0/+16How could they have gone to all that trouble and not photographed every angle of that mofo?!
- kingofthisnight, on 05/19/2009, -0/+16Now I officially have a project to work on over the summer.
- the8thbit, on 05/20/2009, -0/+15They built a slick-looking high end machine...
...and built in a touchpad? - inactive, on 05/20/2009, -2/+12Why the ***** does it use a 790i and Core2Quad?
Buried lame. - lump1, on 05/20/2009, -0/+7This is a neat concept but the execution falls short. First of all, since the frame was aluminium, it should have been intergrated into the heat dissipation system. Second, wtf is the point of having a desk/computer if the dvd-rom is not one of the "drawers"? And how hard would it have been to intergrate a USB hub into the desk surface or the desk front? I hate the horizontal slat in the desk that I would always bump my knees against. Also, they had enough space inside the table to make a keyboard drawer that retracts underneath the glass.
But apart from these quibbles, I think this is a great idea and a really doable project. I would make the tabletop from thick glass, the concept itself is a really good one. - kgerm, on 05/20/2009, -0/+7na, hes just saying he does not want to hear that ***** ... am i rite?
- inactive, on 05/20/2009, -2/+9On that page is a article "50 tools everyone should have". i have all except 1 on the list lol.
and a dremel was not on the list, or an air compressor both of them are really useful. - Llanowar, on 05/20/2009, -0/+6Most modding isn't too hard. (of course we have some very nice exceptions of serious craftsmanship)
But many are quite pricey. - spriggig, on 05/20/2009, -0/+6Acrylic scratches if you look at it sideways. Should'a used glass for the top.
- lazyslacker, on 05/20/2009, -0/+6This is really awesome, but yeah, the project has so much more potential than the end result shows. I may eventually try this in a wooden desk so the parts don't show, so I'm really curious about how they got their hands on that custom PCI-E cable. I'd like to get my hands on one of those.
- SwampAss, on 05/20/2009, -1/+7it should all be submerged
- Spire3660, on 05/20/2009, -0/+5Whats the point of all that fancy liquid cooling if you are going to have 7 fans anyways....
- FreshPineSent, on 05/20/2009, -0/+5Someone stupid enough to run OSX on this machine should be shot.
- jthei, on 05/20/2009, -0/+4Concurred. I take before and after shots if I adjust the position of my keyboard.
- AGONYTUESDAY, on 05/20/2009, -0/+4not a very impressive computer, however nice it looks. 600 gigs of space, a gtx 280, only two cores and 4 gigs of RAM? really? come on. if you're going to make a kickass LOOKING computer, you might as well put awesome parts in it too. I would rather have a cardboard box filled with better parts than that desk.
- Llanowar, on 05/20/2009, -0/+4http://www.koolance.com/water-cooling/product_info ...
- danwallace, on 05/20/2009, -0/+4Annoying... or COOL?!?
Seriously though, my machine has clear panels and blue lighting. It lights up the whole underside of my glass desk and the wall behind the monitors. It looks ***** sweet. - Sebaul, on 05/20/2009, -1/+5Look again. There are only FOUR ram slots, so use of 4gb is justified.
- robertisaar, on 05/20/2009, -0/+4dugg for the dremel, i use that damn thing for almost everything...
- sporkman, on 05/20/2009, -3/+7That would be SO annoying to use in a dimly lit room.
- phylaxer, on 05/20/2009, -2/+5"If science is the dispassionate pursuit of objective truth, then it stands to reason that mad science is the completely irrational pursuit of a nutty project that the rest of the world will never completely understand."
How does the latter follow from the former? For all your talk of reason and objectivity, I find your logic mad. - riptor666, on 05/20/2009, -0/+3To really get a nice overclock you have to use a woman's heart as the heatsink.
- AngelBunny, on 05/20/2009, -1/+4and a gtx 280 and 4GB of ddr3.. rule of three people. it should be 6GB..
at least it looks good - tgc1, on 05/20/2009, -0/+3Goodbye PC cases... hello desk servers.
- lazyslacker, on 05/20/2009, -0/+3Unless they used the latest Intel SDD, I doubt it would be faster than 2 Velociraptors in RAID 0.
- kgerm, on 05/20/2009, -0/+3do it and have more pics of it...
- Zarokima, on 05/20/2009, -0/+3***** ***** spammer.
- jgtg32a, on 05/20/2009, -0/+3Or your bed room
- lazyslacker, on 05/20/2009, -1/+3If you had read the article, they decided on the parts months in advance because they needed to build the table to fit the parts. They didn't have the luxury of a form factor. Therefore, they wouldn't have been able to use any other parts but the ones they chose prior to construction, and the custom ordering apparently took a while, so the specs for the system were frozen for probably months before they actually built it.
- noboot, on 05/20/2009, -2/+4Taking that to a Lan Party would be harder.
- proplan09, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2This looks great...Wish i could afford one..maybe one day
- Hellahulla, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2Yeah, I am a little disappointed they didn't use the frame for cooling. Are any of the fans sucking or blowing air in/out of the case? If they are then they will draw dust into the case, making it unsightly after a few months. Couldn't they have kept all fans outside of the case? Routing tubing through grommets and keeping the case somewhat dust proof?
It is however a nice idea and inspiring for people to create better designs and implement them. - Skuzzlbut, on 05/20/2009, -1/+3:o - must have...cannot breathe...need to find...must buy
- glendower, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2I have a glass desk that has a ledge for the monitor in the back. It would be really easy to box in.
hmmmm.... - mypetridish, on 05/20/2009, -2/+4@kgerm: why would they do that? this is not i7 core, this is core 2 duo.
- SteveMax, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2For a Core 2, no. The 790i has dual-channel RAM; the rule of three applies to Nehalen-based (with triple-channel RAM) systems only
- kitsua, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2And why the crappy/small monitor? Or the crappy speakers?
- inactive, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1Indeed, AngelBunny, the 790i is a dual channel socket 775 board and by extension doesn't use Triple Channel.
Although that was my point: No i7? WTF? - inactive, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1Last I checked ATX is ATX. The screw hole are in the same places. You'd be retarded to design a sweet desk/case like that and have NO ability to change out your motherboard.
So even if your point is accurate (that they HAD to use those parts) then they are equally retarded. Building themselves into a corner like that.
Like that awesome Half-Life 2 case mod: With an AGP board. Suddenly less awesome several years later. - Lawcheehung, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1haha this is so cool, i just read this article in the actual magazine, and i log on my computer, and it's on digg! :)
- TylerDuhrdan, on 05/20/2009, -1/+2There seems to be alot of people bitching about the parts used, or how they would have made it better.
If you thin it sucks so bad, make one and put it up on the web then for all to see. That setup is far better than what most people can afford, or the ability to make. - jthei, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1Definitely, Dremel is a must. I also have a set of trox wrenches that look similar to the allen wrench tool in the article that I find I use constantly when messing with tech-type projects.
- agentsrecord, on 05/20/2009, -4/+5I've never seen someone announce their virginity so loudly.
- jthei, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1You should build a rig into a sturdy backpack with a nice camelbak cooling system, video glasses as a monitor, maybe a logitech air mouse and some type of powerpad keyboard for your left hand. Just plug in power/ethernet and you're good to go.
Granted you would look like La Forge having a seizure while you tried to play anything. - o76923, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1RAM tends to be standardized a little bit. They could have 16 Gigs of ram in there, they just don't want to. And come on, No SSD? lame.
- Hellahulla, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1But that desk filled with all the parts in that cardboard box ... lovely :)
