- nicepants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8It would be nice if the Digg submission would automatically generate a link to duggmirror.....
- ryware, on 07/04/2008, -2/+9The next best solution, http://handyscan3d.com/, costs around $50,000.00 USD. Pretty amazing!
- se7en11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5For some reason I don't find $50,000 very "handy"...
- sammysnake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You were running out the door and had no time to read the article but yet you had time to post a stupid comment?!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Ummm for some reason the page is loading itself inside itself multiple times.
How can someone make a 3d scanner with a webcam but not make a decent website. (i'm using FF 2.0) - nepawoods, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I think they assume you're already using a laser that projects a line (or plane) of light - like laser levels now sold cheap in home improvement stores.
If two cameras were used, with some calibration, a line wouldn't be needed - points would suffice. - Konquest, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It is. I'm using this in my master's thesis, and the HandyScan is a nifty piece of hardware: easy to use and it gives impressive results.
- Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Will have to try that out this weekend.
- kernelhappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Looking at the screen shots page it doesn't look very accurate. The bust of Beethoven ends up looking like an angel releasing a dove.
Joking aside this is really cool. I'd love to see some metrics on it's accuracy. If it's accuracte enough it could be extremely fun with a hobby grade cnc machine and some manual work in solidworks. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2LASER SOURCE: Browsed their site's forums, this product is mentioned, for only 20EUR ($26):

(yes, it's in German, but doesn't mean you can't order it - and most Germans speak very good English by the way :) )
Here's more info:

It is unrelated to barcode scanners.
- detachment2702, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Looks promising for a free application, I have seen other projects such as this but they tend to have lower-quality results. However, It's hard to tell from the small amount of screen shots.
- livesNbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2you'd think these guys would be able to make a good webpage... they look geeky enough ;)

for a split second my heart stopped as I thought you were being serious (at least until the "not so gullible" nerons in my brain transmitted). - steven401, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Most of the picture links on the website are broken.
- Konquest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, you're right. Our uni has ties with Innovmetric (Polyworks) and it works great, but like many things, the software is often the killer, from a price standpoint.
- sammysnake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just plugged in my webcam to see if I could get this to work or just produce some weird results by tricking it into thing I was actually scanning something... Only to find the calibration part of the GUI does not show up on my computer.. Go .Net framework!! Your awesome! So much for that.
- deathguppie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not seeing it. Could someone mirror the page that has all the good stuff on it?
- rusty0101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Better would be if all of the content on the page that was being mirrored were on the same server so duggmirror would cache the important content, and not just the surrounding frame.
Is there a firefox extension to put a button in the toolbar for any digg article to use the duggmirror? - RichGC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I got that also, there's some javascript on the page thats doing it. Try
http://www.rob.cs.tu-bs.de/david/index.html
or disable javascript. - PRlME, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i was trying to down load but i cant when i try to download the program i get a .php page. was any one able to down load it.
i would be easy to rig some thing to spin the laser as it works its way down the object. - steven401, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That Beethoven picture is just a example of how you should position your stuff, not the actual thing you're going to scan.
- PRlME, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1never mind i was able to get it to download
- zcreem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just placed the order for the laser, let you know when it comes and how it goes.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is excellent, very impressive. But where to get a laser source of the right type?
- MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -1/+2This program looks brilliant. I don't doubt that it works (based off the pictures they supply), but how well does it work? Has anyone tried it yet?
I've got a nice webcam and a laser level, maybe I'll give it a shot. - antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is because of referrer. Turn it on and it will work.
- motters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This looks nice. I can foresee a lot of folks using something like this to help create custom 3D objects for Second Life or other 3D games.
- seotseot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.3d3solutions.com - I just checked out another one that Seems to work in a similar way in terms of being to use off the shelf components. There's a price tag but not as much as the 50K suggestions out there, but at least the output looks way nicer.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Check out my post below for their recommended laser source for only $26 !
Slightly cheaper than $50,000 - nicociri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0gotta try this at home...
now all i need is to construct my own DIY cnc milling machine... - danmasc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1cool program, but boy is that one of the worst websites ever. Missing pics, bad links, the works. Great engineers are not necessarily great website developers and vice versa.
- SonicDH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i'm gonna try ti with my equipment i have right now
- ryware, on 07/04/2008, -2/+2http://www.duggmirror.com
- Frukus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I use a Perceptron scanner mounted on a CMM arm myself, I used the handyscan once in a Demo, it is good for some parts that you don't need a high degree of accuracy on, or bigger parts that you can put targets on easily, and the price is low in comparison to what we have. The real killer from a price standpoint is the Raindrop Geomagic software, it is like $25,000 per module.
- jeranon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Duly noted... I was running out the door when I saw this... now that I've had time to read the article... dude, that's awesome.
- BigFoot48, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Amazing how it turns Beethoven into an angel (oops, as noted above)
- proficient, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Interesting.
- jeranon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Mac has had a program for a while (not free, but very reasonably priced) where you simply hold up your DVD, book, CD, etc... to the built in camera and it reads the bar code or ISBN, and adds that item to your library... Wouldn't it be possible for someone to make a similar program for PC? Why do you even need a laser pointer? Any thoughts about porting something like that to PC?
- beezn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I use a program that is kinda like this at work, its called phototop. it measures the distances between dots.
- Himself, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3"The special thing about our solution is that you freely hold the laser in your hand, "brushing" the laser line over the object."
Hope there's some antishake features in the software... or you'll get some special results - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -17/+1Digg down, please
