- PatrickA, on 10/10/2007, -3/+23Sorry, they lost me after tip 3. Too much information......
- notque, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Refuse to work after hours unless it's an emergency. Refuse to check email after hours, have them page you. Disconnect and say goodbye. Your life is important, and you deserve time away. You work hard. They take profits from your hard work. You are not their slave.
Take your time. Don't succumb to people who passively demand your attention. Tell them you are busy. Tell them it will occur later. Do not back down.
Put things on your terms if they are reasonable, and not urgent. You do not have to suffer because of others problems. - FoxFaction, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I can work 0 hours a week, but I make no money. Anyone can cut hours if you're willing to take the pay cut. I'm not, so I don't.
Overall I like the ideas, but some of them seem a little irresponsible, such as "don't feel compelled to respond to all your emails if you don't want". I'm sorry, but that kind of behavior isn't really something that a working person should adopt, that is unless you want to piss a bunch of people off. If you work for yourself I could see more of these applying, but you'd either have to change jobs or quit for these to apply to most people. - notque, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7You can cut hours. Say no. If they offer to fire you, find another job. Do not suffer because of their threats. You are not a slave. We all deserve our time. Who cares if you piss people off?
Look. Be reasonable. Be just. Be helpful. Do not worry or stress yourself over their problems. It can wait. You can email me.
Take a stand. - notque, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I reread my comment, and I did not do a proper job explaining. Apologies. It's healthy and useful to want to do a job right. Even fanatically.
But it's about importance. If you are doing something you as a human being are passionate about. Don't be a corporate slave. - notque, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Then continue. I think you're fooling yourself and gaining enjoyment because there are expectations on you, and you are fulfilling them. It makes you feel your self worth is higher because you get so much done, and handle so much.
And that's fine. I think it's unhealthy, and destructive, but it's your decision, and I hope you enjoy it. - notque, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I love to stuff info into my head as well. I read fanatically, and look up all the sources (something I rarely if ever hear anyone do).
The question is, what are you passionate about? What do you want to learn? It's so much fun learning and studying a craft, but it's also useful to study things that are interesting to you outside of any establishment role. I would argue vital. - notque, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3If you don't have a commitment to your own learning, what does it matter?
- scabbers, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4"The important news will find you, trust me. Let the rest go."
Hm... this is a very worrying sentiment. - ben1sm4, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I totally understand. I am still pretty much a n00b. I love it so much, it is hard to let it go at night. But, all the same, I cook home made meals, I clean, give everyone baths, my time is not my own. I love it all though. I just love to stuff as much info in my head as I possibly can.
- ben1sm4, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3How is this allowed? I have got stuff to do! I need the information overload to keep me in the top of my game (or at least try). My work is high powered, and I like my home life to be the same. I take time, don't get me wrong, I spend some very quality time outside (tan all natural), but cripes, I enjoy this *****, it helps me at work, I need the freaking overload!
- lemac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I agree with FoxFaction...."Respond to only 5 emails a day"...no way is that going to fly...we are becoming a society that is operating more and more through e-mail (faxes are more or less gone). If someone calls me and talks for more than a few minutes, I ask them to send me an e-mail. I am sorry but in this day and age you cannot get away from e-mail. I think a lot of his ideas are way out there.
- artemis1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I, for one, welcome our new info overload.
- davecor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+123. STFU and get over yourself.
I agree with other posters - this could easily have been consolidated to 10 points.
"Brevity is the soul of wit" - Polonius in Hamlet, Shakespeare - logiksan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If you're getting stressed out or upset at the internet, you need to go outside, seriously.
Yeah, there's news worth paying attention to, but come the hell on...look out your window...you're life ain't that bad, there's no point in getting worked up over a lot of this stuff. - shig, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Ritalin was popular in the 80's and 90's, why stray from something that worked so well?
/sarcasm - DamnMan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2"vying for our attention to dictate how we spend our most precious commodity: our time. I suggest that you, and not others, decide how you want to spend your time."
I took their advice and stopped reading the article after that. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Important news according to whom? Important news regarding government and corporate corruption, social injustice ,and environmental crimes will not "find you," you need to actively search for it.
- pyroh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+121 ways to deal with ***** list posts...
- notque, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Exactly. Which is why you need a break. You need to put people on your time. Don't jump when people say jump. You are a human being with your own free will, and can decide your own pace. If they don't like it, they can fire you, and you can leave.
- brettandrew, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1let's just get a top ten list
- ben1sm4, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I don't know if this is the right reply space....
I am so fascinated, just by everything that happens. I learned HTML, I learned about dns servers, it all just stuns me. I started with just VB. It just amazes me, I try to make my time my own, I do actually turn the phone off after 7.I just want to know how the interwebs work, how things hit the server, how just the HTML is replied, dunno, I have so many questions, the more I read from you guys, the more I learn and the more I try. - WilliamDavis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"Much of the problem is that we go online and just submerge ourselves in the information stream."
Holy *****! People get lost in information streams? I've been drifting in an information ocean for years. - notque, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Tips on how to manage your already untenable situation.
- douggmc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+122. Don't read lists that are unnecessarily long.
You'd think that with a subject like this and keeping with the spirit of the subject and all ... the author could have pared his list down to maybe the top 3 best ways to deal with information overload. - firemateria, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Information about how to deal with too much information? Yea....
- echolyean, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I really like this list. One of the biggest problems I have when it comes to working (as a programmer) is staying focused on a particular task, when I have a world of information at my fingertips - literally! This list is a good summary of how to deal with all this information and to make sure only what's important is getting through. A former employer of mine basically wanted everyone to be available pretty much 24/7 - late night IMs, calls - definitely violating the advice set forth in this article.
- DeeBlackthorne, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I know. I got the feeling that some of those tips were just unrealistic. I have to work pretty hard so I can make enough money to keep myself financially afloat and pay off some credit card debt. If I keep at it, then I should be debt free (aside from a student loan) by the end of my lease. I sorta live and die by a calendar; it helps me stay organized. I *do* include fun time. I schedule it in, not in some anal retentive way, but I know that I have to do things that I enjoy for my mind's sake. Yesterday, I had some time off so I got caught up on a video game. Frivolous? Sure, but it felt good.
- 369view, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0there is no concept called information overload - as mind always gets shut as soon as it reach on threshold of information captivity -- would suggest to take 360 view of information when u look for something rather than just going in one direction -- www.360view4u.co.uk
- MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1"3. Work less."
So now I have an excuse for being lazy at school. - PeterGi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0#22- The way I took control of my social information is by..
Using 8hands.
That cute software saved me some time.
you should try it and manage your social life from your desktop!
http://www.8hands.com//hello - ShyGuy91284, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0My tip: Watch how you sync. Last thing you need after having your cell phone and laptop alert you of a meeting while you're working is to see the same message pop up on your personal laptop when you get home....
- SGT.SHIZZO, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Keep those lists coming folks! LOL.
