- johnsolo, on 11/26/2007, -0/+36Fall Dash update coming next week (Dec. 4th.)
from Xbox Live's Major Nelson by Major Nelson
It was just confirmed that the Fall Dashboard update will be released next Tuesday, December 4th. One of the new features that will be part of the release is ‘Friends of Friends.’ With this new features, you’ll be able to browse the friends list of anyone on your Xbox LIVE friends list and send anyone on your friends list a friends request. We’re also adding a ‘Friends List’ setting in the Dashboard* and on Xbox.com to allow you to control who can see your friends list.
-Everyone (only available to members 18 and older)
-Friends only (available to members 13 and older)
-Blocked (available to all members, and automatic for anyone under the age of 13)
It’s important to mention that when the dashboard update is released, the new default setting will be Everyone (assuming you are of age). For those members that not want to share their friend list, we’ve added a page on Xbox.com that is available today where you can modify this setting as you see fit. If you want to keep your friends list private, you can sign into Xbox.com now at www.xbox.com/fof and change the setting to Blocked (if you so desire.) This gives you a full week to decide which setting you would like for this new feature.
If you want to fully embrace the new feature, you don’t need to thing except wait for the update next week.
[Read the press release on Xbox.com]
*This setting will appear in the dash next week with the update.
Edit: No this is not the only feature for the fall update. There are more, but this is all that is being released at this time (along with the previously announced Xbox Originals) I also clarified that you have to be over 18 to have this set to everyone when it launches next week.

- 1nd1g0, on 11/26/2007, -2/+30it says released on dec. 4 not dec. 8th
- sinfony, on 11/26/2007, -2/+28...Xbox Live will still be there when it comes back.
- Sarawanan, on 11/26/2007, -2/+28They should set it up so only XBOX Live Gold members have access to do this because otherwise there is the possibility of spam and I really doubt that a company is going to spend money purchasing XBOX Live Gold memberships which will get banned in a couple of days.
- funnydale, on 11/26/2007, -5/+31So, does this mean I'm going to start getting random spam messages from Gamertags like: "See_my_horny_pics", or "Nigerian_King_69"?
Because that's what's going to happen if Microsoft truly does want Xbox Live to become a social network clone. - Fizban140, on 11/26/2007, -3/+26Jesus, cry like a bitch more, please. Just turn it off if you are some paranoid freak.
- Rijnzael, on 11/26/2007, -5/+27I thought this dash update was going to fix the child account nonsense. I'm a legal adult and yet I can't allow everyone to see my friends list, see ads on the dashboard, or modify my privacy settings in a straightforward manner.
- markwilcox, on 11/26/2007, -3/+23You're complaining about not being shown ads? :S
- jjb123, on 11/26/2007, -2/+19WTF is with this 18 and older crap. If I can sign up for messenger on the computer why not my xbox. I should have just lied when I made my gamer tag.
- Deputydon, on 11/26/2007, -4/+18Thats what any normal person would do, what the ***** is wrong with you?
- handheldchimp, on 11/26/2007, -1/+1547 Diggs and it's down...*cries*
- Thorpe, on 11/26/2007, -2/+16If you can't get on Major Nelson...
http://gamerscoreblog.com/team/archive/2007/11/26/ ... - Nekura20x6, on 11/26/2007, -3/+16This is an official Microsoft blog, so I'm really amused that it was dugg to death.
- 0ldmankdude, on 11/26/2007, -1/+11Did you even bother to check the link before posting it? The stupidity of some people amazes me...
- watership, on 11/26/2007, -0/+10You don't pay for xbox live. That is free.
You pay for xbox live gold, which allows you to play games online. - damon5334, on 11/26/2007, -1/+11Title should be Major Nelson gives details of a new feature within Fall Update... Everyone upset because DivX and Xvid wasn't mentioned, don't give up hope.. this isn't the complete list of Fall Update features.
- TimmyGUNZ, on 11/26/2007, -0/+9I used to feel this way before I started using Xbox Live all the time and now I totally think it's worth the money. Playing games online with PS2 was a JOKE. Every network was independent so you had a bunch of little pricks on there who would cheat and ruin the experiences for many people and there was no accountability. At least with XBL, if you're cheating or being a prick, your negative feedback follows you around and can eventually lead to your banning. Not to mention the awful connections and drop-outs that occured on a daily basis. I now gladly pay the money to have a network that is as stable and accountable as Xbox Live.
It's also a lot cheaper if you buy your months in bulk. $50 a year is a lot better than $10 a month. - SEGA4life, on 11/26/2007, -1/+10What the heck kinda of Hypocrite's do we have on this? "I don't want people to see my made up name on XBL wa, wa, wa,"
"But let me make a post on this Digg using a made up name so the WHOLE world can see me."
I thought the point of playing online is to meet people and play games against people, not hide in the darkness.
I mean damn, what did you think you were playing against Bots on CoD4 this whole time? - Markus123, on 11/26/2007, -0/+8Errr, if you're going to troll at least find out how much it costs before giving a random figure. XBOX360 Live Gold is $44 on Amazon (I've seen it for $38 elsewhere) for a 12 month subscription, working out at just over $3.60 ($3.30 if you buy it elsewhere) a month.
- ericthegreat, on 11/27/2007, -0/+7Show me someone who does
- Coffeedemon, on 11/26/2007, -0/+6I wouldn't mind seeing some sort of decent music player on there. Occasionally I'll throw in a CD or play MP3s when I'm in the living room. That current player is a pain... even if they just added the ability to forward through parts of songs.
- TehEnergy, on 11/26/2007, -0/+6The description of this submission is inaccurate. It claims that the release data of the dashboard update is December 8th 2007. The actual release according to Major Nelson's blog is December 4th 2007.
- xyqxyq, on 11/26/2007, -2/+8It's like an early (rather disappointing) Christmas!
- Mr_Lyle, on 11/26/2007, -6/+12This is really unbelievable...When the hell is Microsoft gonna realize that the only thing that's really important to people is the ability to play xvid/divx. No one cares about any of these completely useless features that they keep bringing out. It's like they have a need to make the update list really huge to make it look really impressive so they fill it with a bunch of completely useless *****. I think the last feature of one of their updates I actually use and think of as important is the the ability to see which disc I have in my drive when I'm in the dashboard. And to be perfectly honest, how that particular feature was omitted from the system at launch is beyond me.
I realize that this is just a little announcement about 1 feature and that the xvid/divx support might still be a part of the update. But if this crap makes it in and the codecs don't, I'm gonna be pretty freakin' pissed. - CanIGetAWitness, on 11/26/2007, -1/+7major server crash
- Rijnzael, on 11/27/2007, -0/+6I'd certainly rather know what's new on martketplace than see a nice blank area.
- Rijnzael, on 11/26/2007, -0/+6Because a long time ago when everyone who already had an Xbox Live account migrated over, it does not tell you that giving your real age will permanently cripple your account.
- Thorpe, on 11/26/2007, -1/+6Mirror? Seems like a sudden rush to Major Nelson's blog whenever we see big news like this.
- gage006, on 11/27/2007, -0/+5 Both options suck compared to native support. Get with it Microsoft.
- pimpzilla, on 11/27/2007, -0/+5tversity sucks for hi def tv's. The video quality sucks, and it's a resource hog. I went back to just transcoding the files to .wmv, which is also a crappy solution. We NEED divx & xvid support!
- markwilcox, on 11/26/2007, -1/+6Probably. And at least one of your douchebag friends are going to set it to Everyone.
- skellener, on 11/26/2007, -0/+5Who cares about seeing other friends? Big deal. Will we ever be able to get our original XBOX game saves onto the 360 ???
- UndeadOverlord, on 11/26/2007, -0/+5Once the 360 has Divx it will become the Ultimate Media Center!...well for those who go to Grab'n'Go Video anyways...
- Lkr721993, on 11/26/2007, -0/+5its nice to stream videos to a high def TV from your computer in a quality codec.
- Buckiller, on 11/26/2007, -0/+5Are you 18 or older?
Yes, Enter. - munkyxtc, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4So are they going to expand the number of people I can have on my list beyond 100? I'd also like to see some confirmation that I can group friends based on my own preferences rather than just a solid list of 100.
- mrfreeziexp, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4The Major never handles the digg effect well.
- mrfreeziexp, on 11/26/2007, -1/+5if people want to see who my two friends are(one being my alt account), then be my guest.
- tsaylor, on 11/26/2007, -2/+6Was anyone else thinking of I Dream of Jeannie? Or am I just out of the loop?
- demiurgency, on 11/26/2007, -1/+5Agreed. My decision to buy a 360 is hinging ENTIRELY upon whether this feature will be included or not. This is what people really care about.
Before release, both the 360 and the PS3 were touted as revolutionary digital media hubs. Without inclusion of the most popular video codecs in the world, this promise is empty and unrealized. - quadracr28629, on 11/26/2007, -1/+5Well go play with the PS3 online (which is free) and then go get on an xbox live gold account ($7.99 per month) And you tell me the difference. LoL This is one of those moments where you get what you pay for.
- ericthegreat, on 11/27/2007, -0/+4You'd think Microsoft would give him some webspace that can handle the loads.
- Dgen_X, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4I was under the influence that the grunts in Halo 3 were calling me a cocksucking whore fag face, crazy how things work!!
- doshindude, on 11/27/2007, -1/+5No, he means Xbox live. [dumbass]
- shad0w, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4Major Nelson said specifically that this wasn't the online feature in the update...
- Dgen_X, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4Not to sound like a retard fanboy...but XBL isn't even $10 a month when you pay monthly...which is the most expensive way at $8 a month.
- TimmyGUNZ, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4Navigating my mp3 library on there is such a hassle. It definitely needs a better music browser, especially when your library is 100+ GB like mine is. I'd love the ability to jump to a certain letter rather than have to keep holding down the page-down scroll for 2 minutes to get to the "S" artists.
