Some of us like usability. - sirhomer, on 03/17/2008, -1/+2nano is really for people who don't know how to use vim, it's feature set is about par to that of Notepad
Usability is very subjective, it's would be painful to use nano as an programming environment since it lacks syntax highlighting, regular expressions, autocompletion, tab completion, easy access to compilers, etc.

- strictnein, on 03/17/2008, -0/+2I've always struggled with why people think it's a ridiculous thing to say. What he said was true. There are things you know (that you'd like to nail the chick at the bar), the things you know don't know (her phone number), and the things you don't know that you don't know (that she's actually a man).

- HolemCross, on 03/16/2008, -1/+2Its an incomplete statement. Begin with some like "Is it" and the sentence works.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 03/16/2008, -1/+2It still doesn't make sense. There's no verb so you can't tell what icebrk is trying to say.
- whahaa, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1if he added 'is it', like holemcross suggested, then 'is' would be the verb.

Trees don't 'here' anything (or hear anything, either).

- Dr0x, on 03/16/2008, -8/+2Hmmm well philosophical buzz-kill incoming: If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, there will be no sound. Sound only exists when it can be perceived.
- Slade605, on 03/16/2008, -2/+9Well riddle me this, if a man has sex in the forest, and no one is around to see it, can he still tell his friends he's not a virgin?
- Dr0x, on 03/16/2008, -0/+4No because if there was no one around to see it then there was no person to have sex with. What has happened to logic?
- cornflakepirate, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1What if the person he had sex with had his/her eyes closed?
- Dr0x, on 03/16/2008, -0/+4No because if there was no one around to see it then there was no person to have sex with. What has happened to logic?
- HonoredMule, on 03/16/2008, -2/+10So if I ignore the rest of science too, can I fly through solid objects by wearing a blindfold?
- Sliver85, on 03/16/2008, -2/+3No, Dr0x is right, sound is only sound if it is perceived. Otherwise it is just vibrating matter in waves.
"Sound is the vibration of matter, as perceived by the sense of hearing." from Wikipedia- Dr0x, on 03/16/2008, -3/+1Actually no, there is pretty much an agreement in the scientific and philosophical community that there would be no sound. Those vibrations will never make a sound unless someone is able to hear it. Sound is the result of the human ears' recognition of different vibrations. Before they reach the ear and are transformed into sound, they are nothing more then vibrations. Also your definition from wikipedia proves my point, Its not a sound until its perceived by the sense of hearing,
- Dr0x, on 03/16/2008, -1/+4On that note I fail at life for misreading your comment. My bad Silver, ignore my last comment.
- frazw, on 03/17/2008, -0/+1Eh reread that Sliver. You (or rather wikipedia) are saying that hearing is perceived, sound is material.
Sound caused by the bulk vibration of matter. I say bulk to avoid confusion with temperature.
Hearing is how we as humans perceive a sound. If you argue that sound is only a sound if perceived then my tape recorder is very perceptive for an artificial object. What am I recording if not sound? Vibration? Well guys vibration is sound.
These arguments are stupid, puerile and purely semantic. Missing the entire point of the philosophical argument in the first place.
If you want a definitive answer. If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?
The answer is YES because I can leave a tape recorder to record the sound even if no one is there.
- Dr0x, on 03/16/2008, -2/+1Like I already stated what I said previously is a matter of science. You are just making up situations without thinking through what you are saying. Of course you could never fly through objects because you have a sense of touch. Your defense of what you call science is pretty contradictory of the actual field of science.
- HonoredMule, on 03/16/2008, -0/+2I didn't want my statement to be overly long/convoluted, but thanks for making my point for me. Now you say I can't fly through objects only because I have tactile perception. I posit that I cannot fly through objects because matter cannot occupy the same space twice, REGARDLESS of what my senses (or anyone else's) perceive.
Similarly, sound, which is merely vibration (wikipedia article notwithstanding) exists whether it resonates against a person's eardrums or not. If perception were sound's defining factor, how do you qualify vibrations as perceived or not? Does recording by a mechanical machine count? What about flower petals responding physically?
It would be an extreme arrogance to form literal definitions around an abstract perspective.
- HonoredMule, on 03/16/2008, -0/+2I didn't want my statement to be overly long/convoluted, but thanks for making my point for me. - aserer511, on 03/16/2008, -7/+3haha, I like!
just a tangent, but follow me here. Mac fans think apple can outdo windows, right?
SO WHY IS OFFICE FOR MAC SO POPULAR? if apple is so talented, surely iworks is better, no?- clak, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1I saw some stats not too long ago and it said that 16% of Office for Mac users had switched to iWork. Some people have to use Office because they use it at work, but iWork documents support Microsoft file formats, so more people are starting to use it. Does that answer your troll?
- thefurball, on 03/16/2008, -0/+2It's so popular because people need it for compatibility with the workplace and for familiarity, although there are obviously some differences.
- m1ss1ontomars, on 03/16/2008, -1/+2I'm not a troll and I don't like to feed them, but I have to say that iWork sucks some serious crap. It's just not compatible enough or familiar enough for me.
Apple as a whole may be either talented or untalented; that's irrelevant. What's relevant here is that whoever came up with iWork is an idiot. - Kypt, on 03/17/2008, -0/+1Sadly in today's business world it's useless to resist MS's grasp. Sure you can use OSX and use whatever you want and people will most likely let you use what you want AS LONG AS it is 100% compatible with what the rest of the company uses. They don't want to have to files you send to a format they can use and viceversa. They aslo don't want funky formatting issues on documents etc, and since MS has never opened their format, these things will always be an issue, thus its just a lot easier to use office than something you may like better.
On the other hand, Office is not that bad - expert01, on 03/17/2008, -0/+1I'm not gonna lie, Microsoft makes a damn good office product. They combine ease of use for less advanced users, and powerful functionality for power users.
- sk2134, on 03/17/2008, -0/+1I agree with aserer511 ! But on a seprate but related note; ppl are so serious these days on the interblags. wtf guys, why cant we all just be friends?
- yclian, on 03/16/2008, -1/+0LOL. I can have a good sleep now.
- yc - peznex, on 03/16/2008, -0/+10The tree does not make a sound if nobody is around to hear it. It makes a noise. Noise is calculated and a sound is heard. My physics teacher explained this.
