- aussieNickuss, on 02/04/2008, -2/+71I reckon Yahoo should move away from search, and focus on developing their very successful services like flickr, mail and finance.
- scabbers, on 02/04/2008, -3/+51Google absorbing Yahoo begets competition, how?
- marktrefgarne, on 02/04/2008, -7/+51Are you insane? How would this be good for users? If Yahoo and Google merged, or formed strategic alliance, any prospect of a competitive environment in search or online advertising would be absolutely dead.
According to the comments above me, Digg users would rather see Google have a total monopoly on the entire online search/ad business, than see Microsoft step up and give them a run for their money. Google+Yahoo would kill competition, by comparison Yahoo+Microsoft would give Google proper competitor, providing incentive to keep innovating and keep the ad industry competitive. - jopjop, on 02/04/2008, -11/+52Google and Yahoo probably can't merge per se - it would be too monopolizing. But hopefully they can combine forces somehow to get rid of the offer from Microsoft (who would only bring Yahoo down with them eventually IMO).
- Coffeedemon, on 02/04/2008, -5/+43So lets monopolize on the other side and the results will somehow be more beneficial in the long run.
- SysstemLord, on 02/04/2008, -16/+45That would be a good move from Yahoo
- JasonCox, on 02/04/2008, -3/+20Great, just what we need, a bigger, slower moving, more crappy Google.
- inactive, on 02/04/2008, -8/+25Q1. Choose which sounds the best
a. Yahoogle
b. Goohoo
c. Microhoo
d. Yahoosoft. - phoomp, on 02/04/2008, -0/+13They pretty much already have.
- yaosio, on 02/04/2008, -3/+16So Microsoft + Yahoo = bad for consumers, but Google + Yahoo = good for consumers?
- ru(sic), on 02/04/2008, -6/+19I just don't want my Flickr to become M$ Flickr Ultimate Edition
- cphelps, on 02/04/2008, -12/+24Using M$ makes you look like an idiot.
- bilbus, on 02/04/2008, -4/+16Why do people hate MS. so much .. and have a huge hard-on for google?
- tdelet, on 02/04/2008, -0/+12Actually, it would be a bad move for Yahoo and a terrible more for shareholders. Unless Google ponies up more $$ per share for Yahoo, they are better off going with the MS offer.
Google is just trying to play spoiler and drive up the price for Microsoft. They have no use for Yahoo. - kaph, on 02/04/2008, -8/+19Personally I would prefer Google to absorb Yahoo over Microsoft but legally, can this be done?
- aussieNickuss, on 02/04/2008, -10/+21Google have proved that they can innovate, even without the threat of competition.
- maexus, on 02/04/2008, -2/+13Though, I agree with this, they have slowed down quite a bit lately.
- sekhui, on 02/04/2008, -1/+10not necessarily.
- Phocion55, on 02/04/2008, -3/+12The Photosynth capabilities were aquired by MS when they bought Seadragon.
- sauvaget, on 02/04/2008, -1/+10oh come on. I don't "enjoy" windows myself but aren't you overexaggerating here a little?
I bet you just posted that from a windows box. - Dylson, on 02/04/2008, -3/+10Agreed. I mean, just look at the 'Live Search' engine Microsoft has. Do you want that to happen to yahoo!?
- Hazardc, on 02/04/2008, -3/+10I really dont see the point in MS or google picking up yahoo myself, but maybe that's just because i personally havent visited yahoo.com in years, since i started using google specifically. not that google is perfect all the time...
- indiekiduk, on 02/04/2008, -2/+9a
- tsevis, on 02/04/2008, -8/+15This is the best Yahoo can do.
- Po0py, on 02/04/2008, -3/+10This could get messy.
- vibrokatana, on 02/04/2008, -1/+8That thing is a piece of crap. When searching MSDN I usually use google because their own search doesn't even return anything relevant...
- SanDaiFez, on 02/04/2008, -2/+8The Pirate Bay should buy Yahoo!
- cisox, on 02/04/2008, -0/+6Me either, it takes way to long to play.
- Matteos, on 02/04/2008, -1/+7It's called the 700mhz auction.
- dajernts, on 02/04/2008, -1/+7Why would you want that? It's a monopoly. The search engine business gets less competitive which = less innovation. With Microsoft Yahoo against Google, there would be a huge leaps in search in no time.
- phoomp, on 02/04/2008, -1/+6"Alliance" does not equal "Merger"
- NEUTRINO50, on 02/04/2008, -0/+5What do you think "alliance" means? :) Holding hands together?
Anyway, will never get pass Justice Department. - Speed, on 02/04/2008, -3/+8Because Google has managed to give the image of being the underdog. It just happens to be a multi-billion dollar underdog.
- cbeach, on 02/04/2008, -9/+14Competition issues aside, I certainly admire Google more than MS. Google write and buy good software and give it away. MS writes crap software, absorbs and diminishes crap software, and then charges a ridiculous fee for it
- dajernts, on 02/04/2008, -1/+6Google benevolent? So you've fallen for their marketing campaign then. You understand that the reason they do any interview once a month describing how awesome and laid back working at Google as to convince people like you things like what you just said. Do you really think they sit around a play video games all day? Google is a multibillion dollar corporation. Maybe the CEOs are benevolent but the stockholders aren't.
- PueSi, on 02/04/2008, -3/+8I'm personally looking forward to Microsoft buying Yahoo, i like some of Google stuff but i want some real competition, it's never good to put all your eggs in one basket.
People should have a little more faith on Microsoft, they're not that evil anymore. - bizchris, on 02/04/2008, -0/+5Except gaining Yahoo's entire user base?
- aussieNickuss, on 02/04/2008, -2/+7What's that got to do with the price of fish?
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -1/+5I know this sounds retarded, but if Yahoo! and Google merged I would seriously consider using Live Search over the other two just so I don't have all my eggs in one basket. How eggs in basket works with search engines I'm not sure but I wouldn't want to be reliant on one company for everything I do on the web. I like Gmail and Google Search, but they are just becoming too dominant for my likings. Remember when Intel were thrashing AMD for years, what did that do for them? They stopped becoming as innovative as they are now and their processors weren't that impressive for a while, not until AMD fought back and stirred up the competition.
Don't like the sound of a Yahoogle! - Speed, on 02/04/2008, -0/+4Probably not, since it would give Microsoft (more specifically Balmer) the excuse they need to file anti-trust lawsuits against Google.
And even if it could legally be done, I think it would be a bad move on Googles part, just because if they absorb too much, it could cripple them . - jakem1, on 02/04/2008, -1/+5Live search is pretty rubbish but Live maps certainly gives Google maps a run for their money. Spurred on by more competition, the latest version of Hotmail is also excellent.
- SSCrow, on 02/04/2008, -0/+4yes, because everyone thinks that Office is a piece of crap.
/sarcasm - rdjurovich, on 02/04/2008, -0/+4Maybe Yahoo executives want to stay in their leading positions (hence form an alliance) rather than be subject to the MS bosses (i.e. be taken over), and follow through on plans for this year. An alliance would probably help Yahoo with their plans, a takeover would probably see them scrapped altogether.
- ZachSka87, on 02/04/2008, -2/+6Unfortunately for you, that is STILL considered monopolizing....or rather is forbidden by anti-trust laws. Conspiracies to get rid of competitors are just as illegal as a merger of two giants, and actually more so.
- Stonekeeper, on 02/04/2008, -4/+8Anything to save Zimbra from Microsoft.
- Speed, on 02/04/2008, -3/+6Or Yahoo+Google=Monopoly, no real competition and no reason for innovation
Microsoft+Yahoo=Competition against Google, incentive for Google to make even better software. - dajernts, on 02/04/2008, -1/+4Microsoft isn't slow moving at all in the online world. They're the underdogs here and they can't afford to be slow moving. Google on the other hand, if combined with Yahoo would come to a screeching halt .
- dajernts, on 02/04/2008, -0/+3Original ideas don't make money without marketing and funding. Big companies provide the funding and the small ones the innovation. It works.
- phoomp, on 02/04/2008, -1/+4To everyone thinking "alliance" = "merger", it does not. The article says "alliance"; there would be nothing to regulate, unless this alliance worked to fix prices (of what, I don't know)
- doshomik, on 02/04/2008, -2/+5Google don't want to admit, but they are really feeling the heat of Microsoft+Yahoo! force. Their recent official blog post shows how much. Google don't want to help Yahoo! from a buyout, they just want to save their soul. Its true that Microsoft+Yahoo! wont take over google's search market share, but it'll sure give them a hard competition in other area.
Allowing google to control Yahoo!'s search system will result Yahoo! simply a internet portal with contents like others & google will get too much control on search market and will look like google getting yahoo for free and yahoo getting nothing.
I hate to say it, but I think Yahoo! should accept the buyout offer from Microsoft. this way google will get a serious competition in search market and Yahoo! will get $40+ billions! -
