- curtisag, on 02/07/2009, -36/+425Is this a joke? XP isn't going anywhere.
- stox, on 02/08/2009, -8/+362How many people will actually notice that Microsoft is no longer providing tech support?
- schnikies79, on 02/08/2009, -9/+207Is XP going to magically quit working in a few months?
Nope, therefor it's not going to be dead. With good AV and Firefox, I really don't care if Microsoft ever patches it again. - DarkredDragon, on 07/07/2009, -5/+180Who uses tech support when theres this kool website called google.com
- Astheria, on 02/08/2009, -8/+180The faster XP dies the faster Internet Explorer 6 goes with it. :D
- viraj86, on 02/07/2009, -14/+186No way XP can gpo out...how can I run Vista on my 512 MB RAM P4 CPU ????
- TheWebMix, on 02/08/2009, -25/+133I can understand scaling back the support since Vista (even though it sucks) is their main OS and Windows 7 will be out at the end of the year. But XP itself will be around still after Windows 7 comes out. Vista users will switch first and Vista will be obsolete before XP.
- inactive, on 02/08/2009, -3/+105I've just tried google.com, it looks like the 90's. I'm afraid this website will never take off.
- deathmatch, on 02/08/2009, -5/+70Here's to Windows XP professional: You had your flaws, but you were a pretty dope operating system. <3
- arbulus, on 02/08/2009, -5/+68This reminds me of people who still cling to Mac OS 9 or Windows 2000.
The tech industry moves forward. that is not something you can fight. You can hold on to your 8 year old operating system all you want, but the industry is going to keep moving forward, people are going to stop considering XP when developing applications, they're not going to be thinking of XP when writing web sites/apps, and one day, you operating system will effectively stop working because nothing will support it anymore. Speaking of the older OSes, have you tried browsing the web with OS 9 lately or with Win 98? It's nearly impossible, not to mention dangerous.
At some point you become that one crazy guy in town who still has a horse and buggy while every other person in town has an automobile. And then your horse gets spooked by engine noise and pulls your buggy off the side of a mountain and you crash to your death. - ohplease, on 02/08/2009, -9/+71
You had me at "M$", that never loses it's 3dge. - giveer, on 02/08/2009, -5/+67"Why are you penny pinching?"
Ya haven't looked outside recently, have ya? - ShuttleXpC, on 02/08/2009, -3/+61Cause we all know we've phoned or asked for support from MS on their official site or through official means...
- PrimeNewsCenter, on 02/08/2009, -6/+58All i know is that I hope Windows 7 is better then Vista...
- bjornski, on 02/08/2009, -3/+55That alone is worth it.
- bincoder, on 02/07/2009, -47/+98when M$ prys it from my cold, dead hard drive.
I like my network cards to be functional.
Win2k and XP do that, Win 7 does not.
Plus no DRM or other remote control from Redmond's special 'features'. - Kershek, on 02/08/2009, -6/+54This assumes we are actually calling Microsoft tech support. Which we aren't.
- MrPatriotMan, on 02/08/2009, -6/+53You can pry my XP from my cold dead hands...
- crossmr, on 02/08/2009, -2/+41stay in school champ.
- Myztry, on 02/08/2009, -4/+42A P4 with 512MB likely has all it's slot full, and is reliant on more expensive older style RAM.
- CoreyTamas, on 02/08/2009, -1/+37To be fair, this is like the 5th time I've read this headline in the last two years.
- alexra, on 02/08/2009, -5/+41xp is like a really great movie, and vista is like a really bad sequal, maybe 3rd times a charm
- passedoutghost, on 02/08/2009, -1/+35MS has tech support?!
- inactive, on 02/08/2009, -1/+34And how is this company going to release security patches?
- FlyingCaveman, on 02/08/2009, -0/+33I disagree with you, but only dugg up because of dramatic horse and buggy crash. I'm imagining the buggy exploding in a huge, Hollywood style fireball.
- eric1071, on 02/08/2009, -0/+33Who here on Digg really "Got" tech support directly from Microsoft ?? ....Yeah.., not I either...
- DigitalisAkujin, on 02/08/2009, -0/+31That sound you just heard was the collective cheer of the world's web developers.
- inactive, on 02/08/2009, -6/+35XP didn't last long. Microsoft just stopped supporting Windows 3.1 a few months ago. XP had a very short lifespan in comparison.
- Pinkertinkle, on 02/08/2009, -11/+38Im going to use XP forever
- SAEJO, on 02/08/2009, -14/+41That sucks, I really like XP still
- ogletree, on 02/08/2009, -1/+28Who needs tech support for windows xp and if you do who calls microsoft.
- ohplease, on 02/08/2009, -6/+32
Who are these people you are talking about that would rather change to an entirely different and relatively obscure OS rather than upgrade?
Are they your gingerbread roommates in imaginationland? - wittzo, on 02/08/2009, -4/+29It says in the article they'll still make security updates. XP is as good as it's going to get, it doesn't need any more patches. What else could be discovered to be wrong with it? I never had to use the tech support line, because I didn't want to get charged $X a minute talking to them. I deleted my help files, they're useless. Google is better tech support than anything Microsoft ever supplied.
They have to release new updates and patches to various versions of Linux to fix more mistakes they find., one day it will be as good as XP. One day. They have to put out updates to OS X every year for the same reason, have they not gotten it right, yet? :)
I've been running XP since '02. I've had to reinstall it only three times because of viruses and other crap that snuck aboard because of crappy protection software and while experimenting with shareware and stuff. SP2 plugged up most of the security holes and I use a router, so it's lack of security is moot. The only stuff that gets on is what I allow on it. - inactive, on 02/08/2009, -4/+29WTF do you mean it uses all my memory instead of letting it sit idly by?! RESOURCE HOG!!!!!!!!!
- teamgreen02, on 02/08/2009, -8/+32Windows 7 can not come soon enough.
- schnikies79, on 02/08/2009, -0/+23No I'm not going to use it forever, I'm just pointing out that Microsoft's support really doesn't matter to most home users. It will be pretty irrelevant overall.
I'm running Vista on my desktop, XP on my Netbook and HTPC. - WestonP, on 02/08/2009, -12/+35So what? People smart enough to use XP instead of Vista & Win 7 don't need, or want, "support" anyway. It will continue to live. I still run Win 2000 SP4 on one of my machines, even though I have an XP license for it. There's just no sense in bogging yourself down with bloatware when a less-bloated version of Windows does what you need.
- katrayun, on 02/08/2009, -4/+25What do you mean by "once I can't use XP on my netbook anymore"? It's not going to magically stop functioning one day.
- anteyekon4myst, on 02/08/2009, -14/+35Why do we reward a business model which encourages planned obsolescence? I think once I cant use XP on my netbook anymore I'll switch to linux.
- ohplease, on 02/08/2009, -4/+24
Yep, all the minuses of a closed source OS but with way less software available and overpriced hardware to go with it.
Is there a store where I can go buy one? A store with someone wearing a shirt that says Genius but they're paid 10 bucks an hour and don't know how to secure a wireless router? - gadgetlust, on 02/08/2009, -2/+21About a year and a half ago, Telus gave me a Lenovo desktop that was free with an internet service contract. (I needed a basic machine to use at the office.) Believe it or not, it shipped with 512mb of ram (subtract about 64 off the top for the integrated video card), and a P4, and was equipped with....
Vista.
I made it about 28 seconds before I repartitioned the drive and installed XP. - trickyt, on 02/08/2009, -1/+20Who needs technical support when there aren't any technical problems? Just as long as the security patches keep coming...
- OUberLord, on 02/08/2009, -1/+20Something tells me that Microsoft won't just hand over their source code to some scrub company.
- roxgod666, on 02/08/2009, -2/+21Don't worry, they'll probably plan the funeral on the birth of Windows 7.
- wolferz, on 02/08/2009, -4/+22Windows 7 is still in Beta you half wit... NO ***** SOME HARDWARE DOESN'T WORK. Why don't you file the complaint with the people responsible... ie your hardware's manufacturers. Of course... that's assuming you can come up with some reason your hardware's manufacturer owes it to their clients to support a beta version of a still incomplete OS.
for god sake you people are stupid. - Myonosken, on 02/08/2009, -1/+18"only" $415
- HigherLogic, on 02/08/2009, -8/+25"I'll never get rid of Windows 98!"
That's what you sound like. - Myztry, on 02/08/2009, -3/+20The majority of software developers will continue to support XP for quite some time. That's where the critical mass and the profits exists. Just because Microsoft is dropping the ball won't effect that fact to a significant degree.
- ramsinks.com, on 02/08/2009, -3/+20pulls support?
NOOO!! Because they where so helpful!!! - trollick, on 02/08/2009, -1/+18I heard of this friend of a friend of a friend who allegedly actually called microsoft tech support.
