While I don't see many people going away from Facebook to do the social networking stuff, the changes across the board on all the services are pretty nifty and welcomed. Plus, all the new desktop apps (Windows Live Essentials) are in beta plus the mobile features offer a pretty solid lineup if your into the Windows Live ecosystem - inactive, on 12/03/2008, -0/+15What's a blink tag? Is it the html equivalent of a popped collar?
- hitkaiser, on 12/03/2008, -1/+10You can remove those in preferences.
- bblande, on 12/03/2008, -2/+7Yeah, like I need to be on another social network....
- computershack, on 12/03/2008, -1/+6You mean the ones you can disable by going to Tools, Options, Layout and unticking "Show Tab Bar"?
At least if you're going to pick something you don't like as the reason, don't make yourself look like a clueless moron by choosing one you can turn off in the options. - akatsuki, on 12/03/2008, -0/+5Despite hardware problems, the 360 really should be a beacon for MS. The NXE is a pretty solid interface, and they have ignored the opportunities that Xbox Live has presented in a built-in potential social networking site with instant take-off capabilities. MS suffers from "not made here" syndrome even in their own divisions (witness the lack of interoperability in the various different MS chat options).
- kalkin, on 12/03/2008, -1/+5i hate logging into to any windows live service. usually it's just to see what the new feature is and then i never come back. but generally i find the whole process of logging into a windows live service clunky. you have to be taken to a windows live id page, which firefox isn't able to save credentials on, then back to the page your after.
plus what's with the ***** stupid "windows live" tag at the beginning of everything. it turns simple names into sentences.
*sigh* but i guess this is the way of the microsoft.... - Octanus, on 12/03/2008, -1/+5Tad bit off topic...
- hitkaiser, on 12/03/2008, -3/+7http://home.live.com/
- angryfirelord, on 12/03/2008, -12/+15Yes, because I've always wanted my e-mail to look like MySpace. What's next, the re-introduction of the blink tag so it looks more fashionable?
/s - ultrafez, on 12/03/2008, -2/+5Use Digsby, it has multi protocol support (including GTalk, Jabber, ICQ and MSN) and notifies you on new email arrival from various providers. Look at www.digsby.com to download.
(btw I'm not trying to advertise, I don't work for them, I just really like this app :) ) - Admodieus, on 12/03/2008, -0/+3From home.live.com, go to Add people. From there you can choose Facebook and LinkedIn contacts.
- FredFredrickson, on 12/03/2008, -4/+7iGoogle is just as *****.
- dusanmal, on 12/03/2008, -2/+4If that was the only issue,... The real problem is that they are not fixing very basic usability issues. Few of my examples: every few hours I need to re-sign-in my Live mail; number of messages in window is fixed to 25 resulting in 1/2 to 2/3 of browser window empty on most modern machines/monitors, no way to see full e-mail headers, junk mail frequently goes to inbox while e-mail marked as safe ends up in junk pile,.... Please fix the basic issues first MS. Than, play with social networking...
- kibbledbits, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2personally I think they should go for the <marquee> tag
- wallace908, on 12/03/2008, -1/+3Good find, thanks
- kalkin, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2good point
- jamesmcm, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2ATM I use Adium on OS X and Pidgin on Windows/GNU/Linux. I'll take a look at that Digsby though.
- bmson, on 12/03/2008, -1/+3msn messanger is huge in europe.
- nexmachina, on 12/04/2008, -1/+3Too little too late Microsoft. What a waste... Still chasing dragons through imagination land. (Can't catch me)! They should use the resources, and programming power to develop new innovative ideas, not copy and re-brand. They totally missed the failboat on Social Networks, that left the harbor 3 years ago... Now the Cloud-multi-touch-accelerometer-train is about to leave, and they are still trying to get on the damn failboat. tisk tisk.
- jamesmcm, on 12/03/2008, -1/+3Absolutely.
Jabber is a much better protocol as you can host private servers and enable encryption - with no calling home to MS.
Unfortunately I have to use MSN as everyone else does, but isn't that the same story with every MS product? - GOVATENT, on 12/03/2008, -1/+3holy crap, first comment and its stupid
- MindTrigger, on 12/03/2008, -3/+5I don't know about social networking, but some of the new stuff they are working on kicks ass. I've been playing with Mesh, mostly for remote control and sharing data between my 5 computers, and I love it. Can't wait to see how it evolves.
- kibbledbits, on 12/09/2008, -0/+1If it's not Scottish it's Crraaap!
- quikboy, on 12/07/2008, -0/+1Windows Live Profile is Facebook w/o the annoying Applications that poke you, or invite you to do something, or whatever.
- FredFredrickson, on 12/03/2008, -3/+4I don't think it's that bad - they've got your MSN list on record, and they used it on the page. It's not that huge of a deal, and all you losers should just stop crying about it, because nobody is forcing you to use it. Half of you people don't even have a reason for defaulting to dislike for everything Microsoft does, you just repeat all the idiotic ***** you hear other people here say.
My only complaint is that I wish they'd separate sections with boxes or colors or something - it looks a little cluttered being all on white. - kalkin, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1mine didn't when i logged into this particular service. skydrive.live.com
- ryleyleckie, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1not just orange too
- jamesmcm, on 12/03/2008, -3/+4I hate Windows Live. I've had nothing but problems with it - same with Games For Windows.
I've been trying to switch to GMail and Jabber (and IRC) but it's difficult when everybody here uses MSN. - GarciaM89, on 12/03/2008, -0/+0It seems that the server is being overloaded or something... I cant go any futher once I click add contact.
- natenovs, on 12/04/2008, -1/+1firefox saves windows live credentials just fine...
- ryleyleckie, on 12/03/2008, -6/+6one word, fail
- gharibyan00, on 02/26/2009, -0/+0I think that's not bad...
But it not to late...?
http://www.historykillerpro.com - bytehead, on 12/03/2008, -7/+6Nothings working for me with Live. Digg/slashdot/techmeme/Internet meh.
- damndj, on 12/03/2008, -2/+1Live suffering a digg effect? Having a lot of issues moving between pages there.
- LordPhoenyx, on 12/03/2008, -2/+1ICQ.......FTW
- Spoomeister, on 12/03/2008, -3/+2More like social disease.
- inactive, on 12/03/2008, -6/+5I like the whole live idea
The
Mesh,
Foldershare
Messenger
Remote control
The only thing I kinda dont want is a social network with it. Facebook already freaks me out, I guess there I'll need 2 identities then... - vidalsasoon, on 12/03/2008, -10/+8iGoogle destroys that garbage.
- myempyrean, on 12/03/2008, -4/+2Holy crap, Ina Fried is a man turned woman!?#
- hitkaiser, on 12/03/2008, -10/+8After playing around with it for 15mins I can confirm it sucks.
Importing users:
I want to add people who are already using the service, I DONT want to spam inboxes of my contacts just to try out something I probably won't use for long, it seems I can't do this, atleast not in a straightforward manner.
"Web activities" (Grabbing your activity from other sites)
Pitiful list of external sites, look at FriendFeed for inspiration Microsoft.
Site performance:
Site keeps crashing and giving socket errors. Bloody thing sucks. I've had to refresh the same pages way too many times now which has made me give up already. - GarciaM89, on 12/03/2008, -2/+0Does anyone know how to do the facebook import feature yet? Help?
- kibbledbits, on 12/03/2008, -4/+2I swear, Microsoft must have bots that bury anti-Microsoft comments.
- freezerburn666, on 12/03/2008, -5/+2everyone knows yahoo messenger is where it's at
- Vindicator2718, on 12/03/2008, -10/+7Microsoft still trying to compete with Facebook with its Window Live blog thing is laughable.
- jknight, on 12/03/2008, -11/+8And I still will not use it. Weird *shrugs*
- MeatMountain, on 12/03/2008, -6/+2Is this the site where all the hep cats rap about which girls they want to ask to the big dance this friday
