- Renian, on 01/02/2009, -54/+502Ok.
And we aren't going to still download VLC because...? - supferrets, on 01/02/2009, -59/+370Great. Now abolish the WMV format and all will be well.
- rrinorl, on 01/03/2009, -4/+182I find it interesting that half the people commenting are like "About damn time!" and the other half are like "OMG ITS GONNA BE BLOATED". I see why Microsoft can't win anymore lol
- rootnik, on 01/03/2009, -25/+188VLC always seemed to glitch for a second every minute or so while streaming divx. Media Player Classic has always streamed better for me.
- PhillyOC, on 01/03/2009, -12/+162"Windows 7 will be able to play all iTunes media through Windows Media Player.Unfortunately, this won't apply to media that has been purchased from Apple's iTunes store, because Windows 7 can't decode the Apple FairPlay DRM, which Apple refuses to license to anyone else."
Apple is the true embodiment of a greedy proprietary and anti-open source company. They are truly what Sony would be if they made operating systems. - Izacus, on 01/03/2009, -13/+147I bet you can explain what exactly is wrong with WMV format.
- JMCtg, on 01/03/2009, -7/+123Wow, Microsoft seems to be back to what they did right with XP. The more things built in from the start, the more they will get and hold the "average consumer". That and all the hype that has been surrounding new Windows 7 features for power users are actually making me rather excited for this next release.
- apzdsx, on 01/03/2009, -25/+136The VLC full screen mode really really sucks.
- azra3l, on 01/03/2009, -4/+114do you really want to have to talk your grannie through installing codecs, or would you rather it just worked out of the box?
christ, i swear that some of you ***** just whine for the fun of it... - theone3, on 01/03/2009, -24/+107For those that don't know what VLC is - get it now: http://videolan.org It plays/streams *everything*, does video screen capture, and it transcodes/records anything.
- theone3, on 01/03/2009, -2/+83That's the stupidest logic I've ever heard. People use inferior software to do stuff all the time. Heck, most people I know still use limewire.
- scarz99, on 01/03/2009, -13/+87Tried the beta, it's much faster than Vista and XP.
- everett3, on 01/03/2009, -2/+75Or, if Mplayer works better without any modification there's no reason to use VLC
- AnalogCamera, on 01/02/2009, -11/+81Finally.
- tropican8, on 01/03/2009, -6/+71"or run an 'all in one' CODEC installer which may also come bundled with hidden malware inside. Additionally, these CODEC packages can interfere with other, and the codecs are not necessarily optimised to run efficiently."
Glad someone mentioned this problem. If you ever visit Doom9 or other A/V forums it is not uncommon too see people having to completely reinstall windows due to "mega codec" packs misbehaving, even the malware-free ones. Most of them completely tank your registry.
Contrary to popular opinion, K-Lite can screw things up too. I don't know why it's become so popular. Until Windows 7 comes out, http://www.cccp-project.net/ is where you want to stay. The CCCP project also has a companion program called Insurgent that can help identify and remove problem codec packs. - mrsteveman1, on 01/03/2009, -3/+58Lets get some facts straight here.
Apple uses h264 which is without question a WIDELY used and supported standard, and so is AAC. Apple going bust wouldn't affect these formats in any way unless they are DRM'd, which is sometimes the case but can be circumvented.
Some of the stuff in WMV9 is also standardized in VC-1, and there are other ways to play WMV content without depending on Microsoft. - RoroCo, on 01/03/2009, -1/+55I see what you did there. You replaced the S with a $ to show that Microsoft is actually in business to make money. Creative. /sarcasm
BTW £inux and Appl€ are also in it to make money. Wake up dude. - prrp, on 01/03/2009, -3/+57"because Windows 7 can't decode the Apple FairPlay DRM, which Apple refuses to license to anyone else"
Now do you Macophiles really want apple to become dominant in the market? - pin0chet, on 01/03/2009, -7/+58Media Player Classic with FFDShow, CoreAVC, and Haali Media Splitter beats VLC across the board any day of the week.
- chicagospur, on 01/02/2009, -4/+54Let me know when Apple starts supporting DIVX and I can stop installing Perian.
- inactive, on 01/03/2009, -7/+57"The more things built in from the start,"
And some ***** will sue them for it.
They got sued for including ***** solitaire at one point. We're paying forit, they should be allowed to include everything and anything they want, even if it includes MS Office in it's entirety. - Kvasaari, on 01/03/2009, -2/+51Because we have MPC.
- bigteebo, on 01/03/2009, -2/+47This is nice. Has anyone ever had WMP try to download a codec and have it work? Of all my experiences when it tries to hunt down a codec, it has never worked.
- inactive, on 01/03/2009, -19/+63 The worst part is that they are proud that they are going to include codecs in their video player when this should have been done 10 years ago and could have been fixed any time in a media player update. The whole thing has been disgraceful. And did anyone ever let WMP search for the codecs on the net? It never worked one time. Ever.
- ZippyV, on 01/03/2009, -1/+44MPEG4 or DivX is not an open format and WMV is (just like Apple's codecs) based on MPEG4.
- Suricou, on 01/03/2009, -4/+47Why does IE still have about 70-80% of the market? Because most people are lazy, and will use the bundled software unless given a good reason to go to the effort of installing something else.
- Slides, on 01/03/2009, -0/+40Media Player Classic has always worked great for me. I have never used VLC though.
- therightclique, on 01/03/2009, -1/+41And Media Player Classic has a highly superior interface.
- abbathdoom, on 01/03/2009, -9/+45Play an mp3 and Ubuntu comes up with a popup asking you if you wanna install the codec. 5 seconds later you have it. Same with video files as well. This is a lot faster than having to load up your browser and go to the divx site or quicktime or whatever.
- PhailQuail, on 01/03/2009, -6/+42This will come in handy when I travel back in time 7 or so years.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 01/03/2009, -1/+36VLC is awesome for playing video but it has a real ***** GUI in Windows.
- Xplodzion, on 01/03/2009, -9/+43Another generic "it's faster than" comment.
If people are going to say stuff like that, I want proof to back it up please, fresh installing any OS makes it seem much faster at first, but in fact it's just novelty or it may also be that your previous OS install was bogged down with *****.
You'll probably digg me down for being negative but without proof, these stupid "it's faster than" comments are just "feels faster" until proven otherwise. - whahaa, on 01/03/2009, -0/+31i use both. MPC is my first choice, then VLC for things that don't work quite right in MPC.
- dbossnirvana, on 01/03/2009, -14/+44This is why Windows 7 is gonna be the sex.
- mktwo, on 01/03/2009, -0/+29Wonder whether MS would support all variants of AAC (HE-AAC, HE-AAC V2) or support just AAC-LC like Apple does...
Anyway, I do hope that MS would offer proper codecs this time, MPEG-2 playback on Vista is terrible as it does not decode interlaced videos correctly. - Rudegar, on 01/03/2009, -5/+33"and all the Apple file formats is that if Microsoft or Apple should ever go bust"
apples m4v and m4a is based on mpeg4 - rootnik, on 01/03/2009, -3/+30I believe they already have the "average consumer".
- inactive, on 01/03/2009, -5/+31I don't understand why linking two software is being anti competitive. Surely it's their OS and they're allowed to do whatever they want. I find it unfair that Apple gets away with so many anti competitive practices, while MS gets sued for everything.
- medj, on 01/03/2009, -3/+27Are you on crack?
- DomZy, on 01/03/2009, -1/+24Yeh WMP searching for codecs is hilarious
- therightclique, on 01/03/2009, -4/+26Could have something to do with VLC's piss-poor user interface. Plays anything though, so I can't complain too much.
- mrsteveman1, on 01/03/2009, -1/+23The MPEG4 container format is BASED on Apples mov container, where do you think it came from?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP4#History_of_MP4
For anyone who chooses not to ignore reality, things play out as follows:
H264 is a standard, mpeg4 part 10
Divx is an implementation of mpeg4 part 2
VC-1 nor WMV are MPEG standards, VC-1 is an SMPTE standard and the codec is similar to but incompatible with mpeg4 part 2 codecs like divx and xvid - inactive, on 01/03/2009, -3/+25No other OS currently support DivX out of the box. Even Ubuntu.
- artfuldodga, on 01/03/2009, -3/+24i think iTunes is close enough to a rootkit on Windows PC's, level of doughebaggery reached.
- dannybht, on 01/03/2009, -4/+25Try Windows 7 beta and you will have proof.
- smotpoker, on 01/03/2009, -3/+24Interestingly, they have come with divx support for years.
For the record, many (if not most) have come with mp3 support out of the box for years as well. You should qualify "Linux distros" to say "Some Linux distros" or "Most major/commercial Linux distros". - gzusfreak, on 01/03/2009, -0/+21DivX codec will play videos encoded with XviD
Also, from article: "Windows 7 will also support H.264 video and AAC audio"
So files encoded with x264 should play fine - PhillyOC, on 01/03/2009, -1/+21Open source means the ability to manipulate and publish the code free of charge. Let me see you try to publish and charge for an OSX program without paying any royalties to Apple.
- inactive, on 01/03/2009, -1/+21Call me when Apple open sources OSX.
