- BREZZZ, on 11/09/2009, -16/+118THIS IS THE YEAR OF THE WINDOWS 7 DESKTOP!
- shinkou, on 11/09/2009, -25/+82"Windows 7 already bigger than Snow Leopard and Linux combine"
I knew it is bloated. :P - Kalior, on 11/09/2009, -7/+62Windows 7: Everything went better than expected
- UmarSajid, on 11/09/2009, -16/+69Windows 7, actually pretty good.....
- gildude, on 11/08/2009, -9/+51That's easy to say. How about some data? Don't have any? Full of crap? Thought so.
- Khast, on 11/09/2009, -5/+39Okay....so 90% of the world uses Windows...less than 8% uses Mac...less than 2% uses Linux...and anyone that might be left out of this uses other OSes. Even if 10% of the Windows users upgraded it would make it bigger than any other OS combined.
Big deal. Let me know when you can finally manage to eliminate IE6 and that will be big news. - Flagg3, on 11/09/2009, -7/+41No kidding. Gee, the OS that comes preinstalled with EVERY new PC sold is selling a lot of copies? Really?
I actually really like Windows 7, and have upgraded almost all of my PCs to it already, but seriously, this statistic is meaningless.
Windows 7 could have been crap, or the greatest OS ever made, and it would still outsell every other OS on the market by a wide margin. Such is the benefit of being the default OS shipped on a PC.
A useful statistic would be to see how many retail boxed copies have sold, but other than that there is no relevance at all to how many copies are in use simply because of the fact that it exists. - Shadic, on 11/09/2009, -6/+39You're probably one of the people who was complaining that Win7 had more than one version.
- hardeep1singh, on 11/09/2009, -2/+29"if they say it often enough and loud enough, somebody, somewhere will believe them -- eventually"
Isn't that exactly what Apple did with Vista? - zoomer123, on 11/09/2009, -9/+31This article was pointless. Windows always have more users than any Mac OS or Linux. But it doesn't mean its better. People have their own opinions, styles, and preferences for operating systems, m'kay.
- inactive, on 11/09/2009, -8/+30So...at this stage in your life, you don't care how ***** stupid you sound as long as you think you are blasting Microsoft?
Everything about this article is right.
And guess what...by the beginning of 2010, Windows 7 will have more users than Linux has EVER have. And WILL ever have as long as your sorry ass life is taking up oxygen. - yttrstein, on 11/09/2009, -23/+45By and large, Mac users don't upgrade their operating system to escape the old one.
- Apex3, on 11/09/2009, -1/+19I'm not surprised, off the top of my head I know more people personally that have Windows 7 than Macs, Linux is a given. But then half of them(and I) get 7 for free through school.
- D14852001neko, on 11/09/2009, -2/+19Well, I do have horizontal span mode with my ATi card =\
- TrancePhreak, on 11/09/2009, -6/+22Or can't you mean? There's a portion out there who can't because Apple doesn't support PPC anymore.
- BrBybee, on 11/09/2009, -9/+24OSX is PREINSTALLED also. If people didn't like win7 they wouldn't buy the PC that has it preinstalled. Your argument is moot.
- PhoenixGX, on 11/09/2009, -0/+15Oh come on, did anyone actually expect a different outcome? Even mac fanboys probably don't think snow leopard/linux had a chance over windows.
- TrancePhreak, on 11/09/2009, -0/+14"The PowerPC platform was introduced in 1992, although the first PowerPC Mac didn't ship until March 1994. The last PowerPC Mac in production was the above-mentioned Power Mac G5, sold until August 2006."
Windows XP went on sale in 2001. Most computers that could run XP can run Windows 7. - Greg2k, on 11/09/2009, -0/+14Yet gin is dry. Wtf?
- inactive, on 11/09/2009, -8/+22The copany only exists today thanks to the iPod.
- ohplease, on 11/09/2009, -4/+17Since there's no such thing as Windows 7 server, that's a pretty stupid analysis. Why don't you add all Windows based servers (seeing as you're talking about all distros of Linux) and see what happens to your numbers. I'm not just talking web servers, I'm talking total deployments.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/09/2009, -11/+23Tasteful? More like pretentious.
- dawnraid101, on 11/09/2009, -4/+16Windows 7 == OS X == Linux.
Who gives a *****. - caramelzappa, on 11/09/2009, -3/+14XP was an abomination? Weird how something so horribly could get almost if not more than 90% of the marketshare for a nearly decade.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/09/2009, -2/+12Look, I love Linux for what it is, but this is stupid.
For one, what reasonably tech savvy person pays for anti-virus?
More importantly, don't pretend like you haven't invested hours upon hours troubleshooting and figuring out how to do something in Linux. That's obviously a cost of using the system unless you consider your time worthless.
Like I said, Linux is great, and a lot of the time spent digging through .confs, Linux community forums, and archaic documentation is paid back in a deeper understanding of computers and making your system do things that are simply not possible in Windows without third-party software. That's worth something, but if you're going to qualify all of that as a POSITIVE for Linux then it seems remiss, if not plainly unfair, to dismiss the upfront approachability, familiarity, and unrivaled vendor support of Windows.
Honestly, the last thing the Linux image needs is more holier-than-thou voices like your own declaring that it's the best OS hands down with absolutely no trade-offs worth mentioning. - inactive, on 11/09/2009, -4/+14without the iPod, it is not even worth the time it takes to hit the "m" key.
- DaviDTC, on 11/09/2009, -5/+1525% of the 1% market share you got isn't much.
- thomas, on 11/09/2009, -7/+172% is that really story worthy? Get back to me when they make a dent in that 70% of XP users.
- virtorio, on 11/09/2009, -1/+11When people bother to update their software.
- BrBybee, on 11/09/2009, -5/+15"No kidding. Gee, the OS that comes preinstalled with EVERY new PC sold is selling a lot of copies? Really?"
If we went by retail box copies Linux, it would have 0 because there are no retail box copies of it. OSX also sells very few box copies and makes most of its sales from preinstalls.
I am sure if we went by only box copies sold. Win7 would still be ahead. - Lucid00, on 11/09/2009, -0/+9You'd be surprised.
- Mercedes383, on 11/09/2009, -1/+10I use 7 and like it a lot, but this article is just another pointless circle jerk.
- NeoTechni, on 11/09/2009, -10/+18Hey Apple, where's your false advertising now?
- inactive, on 11/09/2009, -11/+19Neither did the people upgrading to Windows 7. Just because ignorant ***** like you claim that it was all Vista users does not make it true. Former XP users made up a FAR bigger percentage of Windows 7 early adopters than Vista users.
By the way, you really should plan ahead with the other pathetic fanboy Philly. Your comments basically refute each other. Obviously 25% of Mac users had to escape their last OS according to your logic. - specialK16, on 11/09/2009, -0/+8I honestly though you were going to say *****.
- widgetmaker, on 11/09/2009, -4/+12I use Vista, I like it. When it's a slightly better month it's upgrade time!
(No different to how some upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard..) - ineversleep, on 11/09/2009, -2/+9It most definitely is that. Even Vista was better than XP at that, but no matter what the OS with the highest market share will have the most viruses.
- NeoTechni, on 11/09/2009, -4/+11"I just want to point out that windows 7 still doesn't have horizontal span mode for people with multiple monitor setups."
Yes it does. I'm using it now :P - KMartSheriff, on 11/09/2009, -0/+7I am a regular on the MacRumors forums, and most users think Windows 7 is pretty damn awesome, or any post regarding Windows 7 is usually positive and in its' favor.
- tr0j, on 11/09/2009, -5/+12pics, or it never happened.
- seearees, on 11/09/2009, -2/+9I'm am so ***** tired of this mac/pc hate war. It's purely a personal preference and they both do the same damn thing. It's like arguing what country is best..pointless
- nevetsg2, on 11/09/2009, -2/+825% is a good adoption rate for a Service Pack that you had to pay for. I have just done some googling and found that Vista SP1 had a 69% adoption rate in its first month. Microsoft's bed must have been soiled.
- Kamujin, on 11/09/2009, -2/+8What is true now is that Vista is the 2nd most commonly used desktop OS on the planet.
Sorry, Vista hate is about ignorance, doubly so when coupled with Windows 7 love. - theCoffee, on 11/09/2009, -18/+24Microsoft Windows: The familiar operating system.
Macintosh: The tasteful operating system.
Linux: The power-user operating system. - Sainthax, on 11/09/2009, -4/+10Let's see...I upgraded a Mac to Snow Leopard and a PC to Windows 7 only days apart both with a clean install...my Mac crashes at random, viewing too many images at once crashes it, two different versions of Traktor now crash at random, when emptying the trash it hangs up with the error that "files are in use by another program, on everything from .zip files to .txt to .mp3 files...the list just goes on and on with stupid little issues and not a single issue out of Windows 7 yet. I have to say my results turned out backwards from expected.
- yacks, on 11/09/2009, -3/+9I use Linux as my desktop pc.. but then I don't game nor use photoshop, it's a perfectly good desktop OS. It's not so much a toy unless you tinker with it and use it for what you said one extremely specific need.
- caramelzappa, on 11/09/2009, -0/+5Because more is better!
- BrBybee, on 11/09/2009, -5/+10windows 7 could suck 10 times more and it wld still be bigger.
And would still be better too. - Fazzmania, on 11/09/2009, -2/+7>>Intel
