- TomT127, on 07/07/2009, -6/+68This is why I'm sticking to Windows 95
- UEichen, on 07/07/2009, -0/+36It would also be nice if bacon grew on trees..
- walruspanzer, on 07/07/2009, -1/+35free version of 7? keep dreaming...
- Shadoblak, on 07/07/2009, -4/+37Why the hell are you buying Ultimate?
- toxicityj, on 07/07/2009, -7/+36WHOA! You pay EXTRA for EXTRA features? Get the ***** outta here.
- ColonelSlanders, on 07/07/2009, -0/+29i play that microsoft tinkle game sometimes (whatever its called) and its fun
- SquareWheel, on 07/07/2009, -0/+21It's Tinker, but I liked your answer better.
- EastCoastGnar, on 07/07/2009, -8/+28Ultimate came on one of my machines so I don't feel like I got taken too badly. That doesn't stop me from feeling entitled to some kind of compensation, though, since I'm sure I did pay for it. I think a free version of 7 would do nicely.

It doesn't matter that your right about those things it only matters that you wrote three full lines to comment on a joke. - roxgod666, on 07/07/2009, -3/+18If you're a professional, yes. Windows XP mode and Domain Join will be used by many.
- specialK16, on 07/07/2009, -5/+19Apple. You just don't notice the giant ***** up your ass.
- sanosuke001, on 07/07/2009, -1/+15Well, for Vista, there were some nice features in Business (network stuff like domain support etc), but Business didn't have Media Center and all the xbox 360 extensions like home did. Ultimate had both. Not sure if 7 is the same, though.
But yeah, I expected a bit more from Ultimate Extras. All we really got were a few 3d games, multi-language support, and some DreamScenes that kind of suck... - FearlessFreep, on 07/07/2009, -5/+19Vista == Beta
7 == 1.0
------------------
However, for marketing reasons (on both of them), you pay for them both at pretty much full price - defenswens26, on 07/07/2009, -2/+15Remote desktop support and XP mode are the two main reasons I'll be getting it.
- roxgod666, on 07/07/2009, -1/+12You chose Linux because you don't want to play games anymore? Seems reasonable.
- FearlessFreep, on 07/07/2009, -0/+11'professional' what?
- adiyo011, on 07/07/2009, -2/+12If you're not getting much for Ultimate, then simply don't buy it. I'm going to buy the Home Premium upgrade. I don't get why people feel compelled to get Ultimate. No one is holding a gun to their head. After having checked the comparison charts, you're not missing out on much anyways.
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/02/07/windows-7 ...
From the information I gathered from that site, you're missing out on
-Domain join
-File encryption
-Location aware printing
-Direct Acess
-Other stuff
Most of those are 'big whoops'. Someone who actually needs those features has alternatives which they most likely already use.
Edit: You can actually see the comparisons on Microsoft's website itself. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/produc ...
On second thought, Professional should suffice for everyone who requires most of those features. - magamiako, on 07/07/2009, -1/+11Apple makes money off of hardware--something Microsoft does not have the luxury of doing. Essentially, Apple sells products, Microsoft sells software.
- SquareWheel, on 07/07/2009, -0/+10The machine to run snow leopard is a hell of a lot more than 30 bucks.
- FearlessFreep, on 07/07/2009, -0/+9Well, IBM in the day..
- staystilljason, on 07/07/2009, -0/+9omgggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg *dreams*
- DJRobX, on 07/07/2009, -0/+8With Vista, if you want remote desktop and media center without hacking, Ultimate was your only choice.
I find it annoying that Remote Desktop is still not included with Windows 7 Home. VNC is nowhere near as good. Hope it's still easy to enable with a hack like it was with Vista. - archer75, on 07/07/2009, -0/+8which is exactly what you should do with a new OS. Clean install. Otherwise you're asking for trouble.
- Xenon2434, on 07/07/2009, -0/+8That is a toss-up. I didnt purchase Professional, but I still may upgrade after I have 7.
The main advantages of Professional over Home:
1. Windows XP Mode- very convenient, pretty cool, although I wonder how many compatibility issues there really will be (The RC didn't have many)
2. Auto Backup- Lets you schedule backups to any location (including networked locations).
Besides those, theres not much difference. From: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/produc ... - Epik, on 07/07/2009, -3/+11Is it even worth it to get the professional over the home version?
- MikeOSX, on 07/07/2009, -2/+10Yeah, you do that.
- sexyflanders, on 07/07/2009, -0/+7For me Remote Desktop Connection, Home premium DOESN'T let you run RDC unless you use a third party app, plus I wanted Windows Media Center.
I'm angry with Microsoft too I think its garbage that we ultimate owners get left in the dark. - inactive, on 07/08/2009, -1/+8But, but, but... Macs cost more!
- defenswens26, on 07/07/2009, -0/+7That's what I was implying.
- d0nbaker, on 07/07/2009, -0/+7wow you are HARDCORE!
- brim4brim, on 07/07/2009, -18/+24Lol I think anyone that got Vista should feel screwed over. It was basically released by the marketing department to cover them until they had a real OS developed.
Everything about its release screamed that.
All Vista users deserve a free upgrade to Windows 7 IMO. - kromix, on 07/07/2009, -0/+6You mean wait a few months BEFORE it comes out? Those *AHEM* versions of RTM will be cracked and out BEFORE General Availability...
- kingp, on 07/07/2009, -0/+6If you care about being able to join a Domain, and have a better Backup utility, then yes.
- danwallace, on 07/07/2009, -0/+6He's not being a fanboy. He's just using common sense. XP is rapidly becoming dated. Windows Vista, at launch, had too many flaws for a lot of people to bother upgrading, but Windows 7 has fixed many of those issues. It's definitely worth the upgrade now. In fact, it has been since Vista SP1.
- emomakesmecry, on 07/07/2009, -1/+7I think I'll just be sticking with Vista. It runs just fine and it's not worth the extra $ to upgrade. Hasn't crashed or blue-screened since I built this rig 3 months ago. Left it running for as long as 3 weeks at a time without rebooting and still runs just as fast and reliable.
- archer75, on 07/07/2009, -0/+6Snow leopard for $29 is for intel macs that came with leopard.
You can't upgrade over tiger. Whereas with 7 you can get an upgrade over XP for $50. An OS that is now 8 years old. - zip000, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5I don't quite get the ire about the version differences here. I am an ubuntu fanboy admittedly, and I kinda like windows 7. I haven't really tried to do too much more than playing games with it and watching Netflix so far, but it does those things well enough.
I do have some trouble with the TV out, but I think that is something weird with my graphics card or a problem with the Nvidia driver. I don't have the same problems with ubuntu, but I can't watch netflix in linux.
Whenever I've used Vista, Ive almost always been annoyed. But I have not found the same so far with W7. - Cl1mh4224rd, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5> "free version of 7? keep dreaming... "
I wonder... http://promotions.newegg.com/Microsoft/Windows7/TG ... - DJRobX, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5I bought Vista Ultimate because I wanted both Media Center to watch TV, and remote desktop to access my machine when I'm away.
Now, I can get what I want in 7 Professional. Great! Because Professional is more akin to the former Ultimate, lots of us feel that Ultimate->Professional ought to be a better supported "downgrade" path. Seems reasonable to me. - kromix, on 07/07/2009, -3/+8Don't you get it, its NOT about wanting to have Ultimate and crying because they feel entitled to it.
No-one is saying "zomg i need language packs I can't understand."
It's about Microsoft's practices around it...
If you paid a lot of Vista Ultimate and got nothing, your mad, then you get screwed on the upgrade. How? Why?
If a Vista Ultimate user wants to in-place upgrade (NOT FRESH CLEAN INSTALL), they HAVE to buy Ultimate, there is no other path. If you don't want the griping, simply allow users to 'inplace downgrade" from Vista Ultimate -> 7 Home Premium or Pro.
if you can in-place upgrade from Vista Home Premium to 7 Professional you better figure out a way to allow the downgrade path when you ***** over your Vista Ultimate users with no addons/extras, and give everyone else a DEEP Discount and upgrade paths, while laughing at the ultimate guys.... I mean come on, XP users get a better deal for Skipping Vista than Ultimate Users who shelled out big bucks on XP and Vista???
One or the other has to give. Discounted upgrades for Ultimate Users just like everyone else, or downgrade paths. - jeriqo, on 07/07/2009, -2/+7HAIL!
They are just trying to escape Vista's awful press.
And that seems to work. - Animan351, on 07/07/2009, -5/+10Only a dumbass would have bought Windows vista ultimate without first looking into the benefits they would get out of it anyways. They deserve it for being ignorant.
- Tenoq, on 07/08/2009, -0/+5I'd agree with archer75 ONLY if Remote Assistance is still included. If Home doesn't have either, than I'd disagree - remote access of some kind is very useful from a tech support point of view.
- tommasz, on 07/07/2009, -7/+12Golly, Microsoft screwing customers? Over-promising and under-delivering? Call me when the news is, you know, new.
- splicerslicer, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5to me, 7 seems a lot more light weight, I gave vista 2 gigs and it barely gets off its ass, I give 7 one gig and it sprints everywhere I ask it to.
- inactive, on 07/07/2009, -2/+6All I have to say is "whatever". My horse works fine so there is no reason to upgrade to a car until the price is realistic.
All I have to say is "whatever". My loin cloth works fine so there is no reason to upgrade to modern clothes until the price is realistic.
All I have to say is "whatever". My B&W TV works fine so there is no reason to upgrade to flat screen until the price is realistic.
All I have to say is "whatever". My outhouse works fine so there is no reason to upgrade to a toilet until the price is realistic. - doshindude, on 07/16/2009, -1/+5The one that doesn't suck: Windows.
- masterstghm, on 07/08/2009, -0/+4At least it's not the "Ultimate" price.
- TrancePhreak, on 07/07/2009, -0/+4Remote Desktop and Media Center together in one package. (RD is in Business, MCE is not)
- deslock, on 07/07/2009, -0/+4You could own Vista Home basic and get the same $50 upgrade... so how is this good for Ultimate owners?
