- ilikeeggs8877, on 11/20/2008, -6/+31I'm still kind of iffy about this whole touch screen thing. Its cool yes, but I reallllly hate fingerprints. I'm perfectly content with a remote for the time being and a mouse for my normal computing experience.
- RogerStrong, on 11/20/2008, -0/+16>> Doesn't seem to be
>> ready for prime time.
The fact that it's in pre-Beta didn't give that away?
Sheesh. - reticulate, on 11/20/2008, -0/+7Yep, they'll no longer sell TV's with remotes. You'll have to get up and touch the screen.
Moron. - Kazbaeden, on 11/20/2008, -0/+7On the contrary, the giant features make it perfect for touch.
- fanboydcs, on 11/20/2008, -7/+14I just don't see this as practical. The only practical thing I can see this used for is "Kitchen media centers" and even then that market is limited.
It might be a cool gimmick for your desktop PC, but the added cost of the touch screen could go to a much larger display and all the navigation I see in the video can be done with apple's white remote.
Also the finger prints would drive my OCD crazy. Monk would not approve :-) I just do not see it being widely adopted even though the technology is very cool. - superkendall, on 11/20/2008, -1/+8A giant touch screen for a media center seems impractical. I like the idea of using something like an iPhone or Android phone as a touch remote (the iPhone/Touch already offer a remote control app for iTunes/Front Row).
- lacronicus, on 11/20/2008, -0/+6To clarify: 7 will support a mouse and keyboard just fine.
Idiot. - timmers0, on 11/20/2008, -8/+14Something positive about Microsoft on Digg?
In other news, flocks of pigs began their flight south for the winter today... - wastern, on 11/20/2008, -2/+6its very awkward to go from the keyboard and mouse, to then reach across the desk to touch the screen. Not to mention a media center interface isn't something you use while sitting at your desk, its for the living room.
This would be good on a 7 or 8" touch screen remote that interfaced with the WMC hooked up to the TV - diemunkiesdie, on 11/20/2008, -1/+5Use the remote. Why does everyone seem to think you can only have one, touch or a remote? The HP TouchSmart can also be purchased with a remote. Buy that one and quit your whining.

63 points and almost nobody got the point??? wow! MS really did this wrong.
dudes, it's not for your huge TV set's it's for watching TV from your comuter/laptop etc. Something that you keep at an arms distance. If you don't ever do that then there's nothing to see here. Go digg some stupid cat video instead. - tripledjr, on 11/20/2008, -1/+5I think you dropped this:
/s - AdmiralAcbar, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4@1807: Any program which forces me to convert my ENTIRE LIBRARY without prompting me is not a good program. iTunes sucks.
- enigmatics, on 11/20/2008, -2/+5I was able to use a HP touchscreen desktop (an iq700 something) for a couple days and the smudges were barely noticeable, if at all. The texture of the screen helped hide them and the computer screen was bright enough to counter any glare that might highlight a smudge. And like PosedMagnet mentioned above, as long as your hands are fairly clean they don't leave much residue at all anyways (sorry to those who have 'glandular problems').
Also, touch screens are so intuitive I found myself accidentally touching non-touch devices such as my normal desktop, laptop, and even TV when I had left the guide on and was walking by. After using touch screens the only thing I have a desire to use a mouse for are first person shooters. Image manipulation and most other games/software can easily be controlled with the precision of a stylus, arguable even better than a mouse. - bluemist, on 11/20/2008, -2/+5Touch control would be awesome if it becomes a remote control for your huge HDTV! Imagine if I have an HDTV with Media Center, I would want to control it using a small 9-12" multitouch laptop or netbook.
- whiteyMcBrown, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3That looks really slick. I think it's best implementation would be in a pretty large remote, though. The iPhone is cool, but I haven't seen any application where you can easily navigate something with as much functionality as mediacenter on it. I definitely don't want to walk up and touch my TV to do these things either. I really think that an 8-10 inch screen on my coffee table would do it. Media Center, home automation, email, and web browsing is all I would need that machine to do. The MS Surface is a little too ugly (and expensive) for those simple tasks. Maybe when they have something thin enough to replace the glass top on my existing wooden table...
- RogerStrong, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3They haven't taken away the remote. The touch-screen is merely another option for controlling it. Say, in a kitchen.
- RogerStrong, on 11/20/2008, -1/+4So having a decent two-foot interface somehow breaks the 10-foot interface?
- Soave, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3Obligatory "what about my highly likely to be dissappointed [sic]?"
- RogerStrong, on 11/20/2008, -1/+4No-one says you should. They're just giving you another option.
XP and Vista Media Center PCs already come with remotes. This'll be good for places where a touch screen is more practical. - roxgod666, on 11/20/2008, -1/+4Maybe it's because he was using his fingernail...
If you listen at 0:12, you can even hear the flick on the screen. - inactive, on 11/20/2008, -1/+4So you're going to continuously wash your hands, to account for your hands continually secreting oils?
- KISSOLOGY, on 02/16/2009, -0/+2I love the future.
- radu79, on 11/20/2008, -1/+3For some reason, Windows 7 got a lot of positive mentions on Digg.
People seem to love that new taskbar, and merely suggesting that they should let the old one in there as well will get your post buried. - jakem1, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2That's what I thought too. The other thing to note is that he's concentrating on wrapping up the demo at the same time so he probably didn't care what he was clicking on.
- aceallways, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2So...a nintendo DS?
- radu79, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2No, there was an article somewhere where MS said that the old task bar will NOT be available, and that people MUST get used to the new taskbar.
- reticulate, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2Yes, because a touch interface will make remote controls obselete.
- bratterscain, on 11/20/2008, -1/+3Correct. Remote's much better. I'm not getting my lazy ass up to turn the channel. If it doesn't make me lazy, it's not high tech.
- Elranzer, on 11/20/2008, -1/+2I have Windows 7 running and let me tell you, I already miss the old taskbar. You can't enable back the old one. Also, the classic Start Menu is also permanently disabled.
- mmembrino, on 11/20/2008, -2/+3that would never happen.
- Dustmuffins, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1We have a winner.
- Rockkybox, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Your head points up your arse
- Surferess, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1You should write for Penthouse!
- davdev, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1It could also make a cool bar top Jukebox, but there are better programs than media center to handle a music library.
- cquinnd, on 11/20/2008, -1/+2You don't have Windows 7 running, what you have running is a pre-beta build put together to showcase some of the ideas MS is working on to be implemented in Windows 7 when if goes to beta late this year or early in 2009.
Allowing acces to the old taskbar and classic Start Menu's is most likely an option that the beta testers will get to provide feedback on. I would hope they also include the XP styled taskbar as an alternate theme this time around. - NiyazK, on 02/09/2009, -0/+1nice article !! more microsoft and windows related news - http://techb.net/category/windows/
- mahle, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1I don't think he was trying to get to pictures. He presses Music first a couple of times. Then presses Music Library, which goes to Picture Library, which he settles with.
- LordBacon, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Hahaha you get buried !
2009 is the year of the linux desktop, right ?
Rolf. - Kazbaeden, on 11/20/2008, -1/+2I have a latitude XT, and I can agree with this. You'd think that smudges would be terrible, and that might be the case for a mirror-finish Macbook Pro, but most tablets are designed with finger use in mind. As a half-blood italian, my hands are more oily than most, but I only feel the need to wipe the screen every couple of days. Wiping the screen justs consists of running it over with a microfiber cloth.
For the added functionality, I feel this minimal extra labor is well worth it. - RogerStrong, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1You would use the remote, just like the remotes that come with the XP and Vista Media Center PCs.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1If you have to constantly wash/wipe your hands, then you're a dirty little slobby.
I use touchscreen ***** all the time and it's really a non-issue unless I'm ***** around with something after eating a piece of pizza and forgetting to wash my hands.
But that's not the monitor's fault. - stonedgeek, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1I have a HP Pavilion tx 1000, which has a touch screen and Vista installed. I've had it set up on a table connected to a stereo and with vista's wmc at several parties and it's always worked great.
My guests have always felt comfortable to walk up and scroll through with their fingers or the stylus and adding new songs to the queue. I've had very few problems with it (the invisible icons on the sides of the screen for when you're scrolling through the artist/album lists seems to baffle people).
It may seem like a niche feature but it's one that I've already found useful. No-one notices fingerprints when the only illumination around is the screen itself (I suppose the heavy drinking helps).
All that being said, why is this a story if I can already do it on my current laptop? - diemunkiesdie, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1That's why you also have a remote. You really think people get up to change the channel on their HP TouchSmart? You can buy it with a remote.
- oMeSSiaHo, on 11/20/2008, -2/+2To the people saying it needs features like notes, calendar and home atuomation, the Touchsmart running that demo already has most of that. Since Bill Gates talked about this kind of thing back in the 90's I see no reason Microsoft wont include these features in Windows 7.
And yeah, the screen does get dirty as *****. They need to develop the tech ON the screen as well as below it! - rixbad, on 02/14/2009, -0/+0Isn't this what sideshow is for? I'm waiting for the 7" touchscreens to come in under $200. Thinking that's just around the corner, I believe I've seen announcements for a few in Europe, Asia.
- kevyn, on 11/20/2008, -1/+1keyboard shortcuts were there to make things faster by not using the mouse... I feel touchscreen is a step in a backwards direction. Perhaps the rollerball will make a comeback?
