- doshindude, on 11/15/2009, -19/+309It's 30 bucks if you're student, it's actually worth it this time around.
- aforsberg, on 11/14/2009, -31/+277But I actually plan to pay for it.
- ThantiK, on 11/15/2009, -3/+205I'm starting to think that this time Microsoft will let this continue on for a long time before they put a clamp down on it. Piracy is what gave windows its stronghold in the market even though nobody will admit it. They *want* to see large-numbers adoption for Windows 7.
Later on they can clamp down on the piracy and try and swindle those users once their computer is disabled remotely.
Piracy also spreads the word. The people who are pirating this stuff are the same people who are suggesting to their mom and pops that they get Windows 7 in the first place (as far as I've seen and heard.) - raptorlightning, on 11/15/2009, -11/+178I'll pay 30 bucks. I won't pay 300 bucks.
- cawfee, on 11/15/2009, -14/+163Windows 7: Unexpectedly Pretty Damn Good Edition
- ThantiK, on 11/15/2009, -6/+70Digg turned from a competent tech-oriented news site into a Microsoft/Apple fanboy site. That's why he's getting buried.
- Upon66, on 11/15/2009, -11/+71MSDNAA ftw. Free copies of 32bit and 64bit Windows 7.
- joeTaco, on 11/15/2009, -4/+64Well if you're a student, you're in luck.
http://www.microsoft.com/student/en/us/software/wi ... - INTERNETMASTER, on 11/15/2009, -7/+60come on people SEED
- reticulate, on 11/15/2009, -9/+51Because you're using an 8 year-old OS and there's a better alternative available?
There were plenty of people who swore by 98 when XP came out, especially for gaming as the driver support just wasn't there, and that was only three years between revisions (nobody counts ME). Once the OS firmed up a bit people appreciated just how much better it was than the 9x variants.
Same deal here. 7 benefits from all the work done on drivers and compatibility with Vista, but has neither the name and less junk in the trunk. It's fast, stable, works with anything you throw at it (even the 64-bit version) and has a nice, clean, rather more secure codebase to be working with. Partition a drive and check it out, I guarantee you'll like it. - datdamonfoo, on 11/15/2009, -6/+45Windows 3.11 works fine for me, why should I change?
- compacho, on 11/15/2009, -0/+39Many people are saying to buy it instead since its affordable. Well if you're not a student and just a home user it's far from pocket change.
- monkeyrun, on 11/15/2009, -3/+42LOL I still remember my friends freaking out about getting error messages saying their Windows xp is pirated.
- raptorlightning, on 11/15/2009, -26/+61Sigh. I don't know what you are getting dugg down for. Its true. This is what vista should have been.
- unedukated, on 11/15/2009, -5/+33I hate to be grammar police, but come on!
- Mercedes383, on 11/15/2009, -2/+29What the hell are you talking about?
- strangewill, on 11/15/2009, -9/+35Go and redesign their entire OS, but still have their pricing model be ridiculous.
Seriously that is like 75% of the cost of the machines I've built. - ileftfark, on 11/15/2009, -1/+26Thanks dude. Let us know what Mr. Gizmodo tells you. And don't feed him after midnight.
- JigoroKano, on 11/15/2009, -2/+27Crashes faster.
- cryinlion85, on 11/15/2009, -18/+42nobody needs to torrent this. it's affordable.
- Memnochxx, on 11/15/2009, -1/+22I wish I could get discounts with art.
- theghoul, on 11/15/2009, -18/+36join the IEEE or ACM if you're a student and get it from MSDNAA.
Gotta give MS some props on this one. Its pretty stable and user friendly. A worthy successor. I still love OSX though. - Ne007, on 11/15/2009, -2/+20^
Good thing I don't care what you condone. - cawfee, on 11/15/2009, -3/+20Runs -what- faster though? While I agree that jumping on the new tech bandwagon is silly, there's a point where we need to move on and embrace new innovations.
- HotLeper, on 11/15/2009, -7/+23Sound practice. I'll be doing the same with my girlfriend. Let it accumulate a couple of patches and fix the most annoying and noticeable bugs before marrying her.
- seltaeb4, on 11/15/2009, -9/+24Windows 7ista.
- solarwind24, on 11/15/2009, -5/+20Disable their computer remotely? That's never gonna happen. First of all, that move is too risky for Microsoft. Second, the second they do that, someone's gonna crack the software all over again.
- TylerDuhrdan, on 11/15/2009, -6/+20So continue to bitch about how it is a Vista update, or Service pack 3, or whatever else you want to.
It is worth buying.
It's better than the Large Cat alternative that does not actually start in 64bit unles you hold keys down or hack it.
It's better than vista and runs like XP.
So, STFU about Service pack 3, or 7ista, or Vista upgrade, your not coming up with anything we have not heard. - Edgers, on 11/15/2009, -0/+14Back in 2010..? Are you from the... future?
- m3arvk, on 11/15/2009, -6/+20Yes because the executives, marketers and programmers don't need to be paid for their talents or time.
- reticulate, on 11/15/2009, -0/+14Well these comments are a race to the bottom.
- Tarkaan, on 11/15/2009, -15/+28Anyone wanna give me a reason to upgrade from XP? Everything I use works. Why ***** with it?
- candorny, on 11/15/2009, -4/+16That's a cool little story you just made up.
So...let's see...we are supposd to believe the following series of ***** tales
1. You have friends
2. Your friends got a Windows 7 computer and immediately put 5-10 years worth of pictures on it and then DELETED the originals.
3. Your friends got a virus already evne though anyone with even an ounce of common sense has used Windows for years with ZERO problems.
Seriously...until the day you shoot yourself in a hear after realizing how sad you have let your life become, relaize that this comment made YOU look bad, not Microsoft. - twiztidsinz, on 11/15/2009, -0/+12"hacked cd key version"?
No clue what you're talking about, do ya... - SchmittTheDude, on 11/15/2009, -0/+12pre-activated versions rock
- twiztidsinz, on 11/15/2009, -0/+12This crack is OLD, like months old...
And while it works, it's not a great way to go since you won't be genuine. - ThantiK, on 11/15/2009, -4/+15This statement is downright false and a sure sign of an MS fanboy.
- efitz11, on 11/15/2009, -12/+23I've been using Win7 since the RC and there haven't been any bugs or anything that I'd wait for. IMO you are waiting when you can be having something awesome.
- gcnaddict, on 11/15/2009, -6/+17This guy is either a heavy troll or highly delusional.
Either way, Ymeg is a douchebag. Not all programmers believe that their code should be open source, and I don't blame them; the ideologies behind open source and closed source are so strong that verbal confrontations between both camps can be as heated as religious confrontations.
Look, here's the deal. Programmers who prefer the FOSS route can do FOSS. Programmers who prefer closed-sourcing their work can do just that. Don't be the douchebag who tries to shove his mentality down the throats of people who disagree; you're just embarrassing yourself. - kgerm, on 11/15/2009, -5/+15i just sent him an email asking where to download the file... ill let you guys know
- counterplex, on 11/15/2009, -4/+14Nay, dugg for "Lo!"
- wcstryfe10, on 11/15/2009, -2/+12that's what she said
- reticulate, on 11/15/2009, -6/+16@Tarkaan, unedukated: I'm saying 7 is quantifiably better, from install to daily usage. It's a better OS, and as much as I like XP I'm not sad to let it go if there's a good alternative.
@Miket: 2000 was pretty awesome, but I don't think it was anywhere near as popular as XP became. - AlyxVance, on 11/15/2009, -1/+10windows 7 is removed from the ieee msdnaa
- stolemybike, on 11/15/2009, -13/+22Windows 7-Minor-Changes-From-Vista
- tavisjohn, on 11/15/2009, -13/+22It should be giving out to everyone who has Vista as an "I'm sorry for the sucky OS, and I know that 7 is what Vista was promissed to be".
Vista is Windows ME all over again! A crappy OS to milk and pacify the public untill they can release a way better OS. - akiller, on 11/15/2009, -0/+9protip: the 32 bit key should work on x64 too
- blasteker, on 11/15/2009, -2/+10Came free at my school :)
- unedukated, on 11/15/2009, -4/+12And your point is what? Can you cite a source for that claim?
- doctordbx, on 11/15/2009, -4/+12Swindle?
