- FredFredrickson, on 07/10/2009, -6/+51Wow, congratulations on figuring out how to use torrents. You must be some kind of god damned genius.
- bakamas, on 07/10/2009, -1/+32For those of you who are still whining about Vista, you're way behind the trend.
- DarkStar3333, on 07/10/2009, -3/+26XP had the same kind of headaches when it was released, drivers and networking being the biggest issues. That said theyll sweep Vista under the rug as to not repeat the Windows ME epidemic again.
- eatporktoo, on 07/10/2009, -0/+20Save money on the OS, get robbed on hardware
- SpartanErik, on 07/10/2009, -0/+19Actually if the installer is similar to Vista's, you CAN use an upgrade disc to do a clean install. Install without a CD key, then run the upgrade and use the key, voila!
- colincornaby, on 07/09/2009, -12/+30For the UPGRADE version.
For people who build their own machines or want to be able to install without getting out the original CD, this is mostly worthless. Not to mention it's the home version... - inactive, on 07/10/2009, -0/+18yes...owning a Mac is SOOOOO much cheaper!
- inactive, on 07/10/2009, -5/+22vista's really not that bad dude
- KJGJ, on 07/10/2009, -5/+21I've torrented about 50% of the things on my computer, but an operating system i always something I've said I wouldn't ***** around with.
- 2matrix, on 07/10/2009, -2/+18Windows 7 is the first windows I will happily pay money for, it's that good thus far.
- scy1192, on 07/10/2009, -4/+19you do realize that 3 licenses for $150 is $50 a piece which, for software that controls your whole computer and is able to run the vast majority of software is not a bad deal at all.
- Giac, on 07/10/2009, -4/+18seems like good value to be honest...I don't see why people whine so much. If you can't afford to buy an OS, then how the ***** did you afford a PC?
- FredFredrickson, on 07/10/2009, -0/+14Who said it was a discount?
- Chupacabraz, on 07/10/2009, -2/+14You're wrong. The current $50 promotion is scheduled to end within days.
- inactive, on 07/10/2009, -0/+10It also could you nothing but your gramma
- FredFredrickson, on 07/10/2009, -2/+12Plenty of people will, I bet. Windows Vista wasn't really all that bad of an OS (especially post-service pack), but it has a lot of bad stigma attached to it. Windows 7 is a lot like Vista, but minus a lot of the stuff people criticized. Microsoft has been a lot more receptive to users' input this time around, and it shows.
- Kazbaeden, on 07/10/2009, -0/+10Yeah, you really can't beat $29. Comparatively W7 is so much more expensive! Oh what's that? I can't install Snow Leopard on my computer? What do you mean I have to buy a Mac? So really I have to spend at least $500 to use Snow Leopard?
Wow, you just saved me a ton of money. - KJGJ, on 07/10/2009, -3/+12Damn companies for trying to make a profit! I can hardly see how you're advertising for Apple and at the same time calling Microsoft a power hungry mega-corporation.
- kentifer, on 07/10/2009, -2/+11It's half off right now.
- useraccess, on 07/10/2009, -0/+9Fail!
- falser, on 07/10/2009, -1/+10Hopefully it's like previous upgrade versions, where you don't actually have to install the previous OS before upgrading, rather just pop the disk in to verify it.
- IllBeBack, on 07/10/2009, -2/+11Thanks for making the price artificially higher for the rest of us, dick.
- thedogfatherx, on 07/10/2009, -4/+12Windows 7 is great. All you haters are either retarded or a fanboy of something else.
- eatporktoo, on 07/10/2009, -4/+12I dugg you down for saying "Micro$oft".
Damn that's annoying and instantly makes me not care about what you have to say - brister, on 07/10/2009, -0/+8Can't we just do away with upgrade versions? I mean everyone owns a copy of a previous version of windows by now and if they dont then they're probably buying it with a new pc anyway.
- Dustmuffins, on 07/10/2009, -0/+8My lazy?
- Dugglous, on 07/10/2009, -2/+9If you download ISO you can get Windows 7 free.
- TWallaceWD, on 07/10/2009, -1/+8Go look at Apple's hardware prices then see if you can still complain about MS being capitlalist with a straight face. 3gb RAM for $150, 640gb HDD for $200, extra DVD burner $100, compare to NewEgg prices. I'm not so sure capitalism is a bad thing anyway. This may be shocking to you, but businesses are in business to make money.
Also, what exactly is so wrong with Vista? Works fine for me at work and at home. Granted, before SP1 I had some issues, but none since. SP1 was the repair, Windows 7 is not. - eatporktoo, on 07/10/2009, -0/+7Perhaps you don't understand that it is $150 for a FAMILY PACK, not a single license... If you want a single license buy one at newegg.com right now for $50 and quit bitching
- FredFredrickson, on 07/10/2009, -0/+7No, I just think it's lame that you would be proud of something so idiotic.
- 1ofMany, on 07/10/2009, -2/+8Your reasoning is flawed at best.
- UselessTrivia, on 07/10/2009, -1/+7@EntropyFan: You're describing the offical process. It was exactly the same with Vista. You had to be in XP, then load up the disc, it would check your validation, etc...
The "trick" is that every Windows Vista (and presumably Windows 7) DVD is exactly the same. The only difference is the license key. No matter whether it's Ultimate, Business, Pro, or an upgrade edition of any of those, it's the same DVD.
So what you do is use the installer to load a full version of windows. Don't tell it you're doing an upgrade. It will even let you proceed without entering in a license key and go into eval mode for 30 days.
Then once you're in Windows, put the disk back in and do an upgrade install from Win7 -> Win7. As stupid as that seems, it worked perfectly on Vista. It didn't even matter if you ever fully validated your installation.
If there's any reason it won't work in Win7 that will be the reason. They'll deny upgrade install permission if the copy is still in trial mode.
Still, upgrading an OS isn't the dirty process it used to be. Updating from Win95 to Win98 was messy and gross and left you with a wierdly performing system. Upgrading from XP to Vista was actually not a big deal, especially on a clean install. It keeps things pretty well segregated. - thegrizz51, on 07/10/2009, -0/+6Yeah, but you need Pro to run the Virtual XP feature. If you have some programs that don't like Vista, the Pro version is way better. Ultimate is still a waste of money.
- beachtrader, on 07/10/2009, -0/+6First people when? Link?
- rayskin, on 07/10/2009, -6/+12So correct me if I'm wrong but MS is offering no discount for buying the family pack?
- specialK16, on 07/10/2009, -1/+7They are giving it up for free for you to try it out and see how ***** Windows 7 is. It rocks.
But you are a deluded anti-ms troll. So please, by all means, gtfo. - deslock, on 07/10/2009, -0/+6@Wildiggi
Your logic is nonsensical.
If you want to save a few bucks, why aren't you installing linux?
You win the fanboy award. - IllBeBack, on 07/10/2009, -2/+8I will be grateful to be able to get Windows 7 through my MSDN subscription from work. Otherwise I would definitely pay for it.
- tnoy, on 07/10/2009, -0/+6Thats like saying XP was a service pack for 2000.
- gordigor, on 07/10/2009, -2/+8That would be because you are a loser.
If you don't want to pay for Windows, then don't use it. There are plenty of Linux distros that you don't have to be damned about. - Crimsoneer, on 07/10/2009, -0/+6Unless you're in Europe, in which case you need to buy a full new license! Wehey.... :(
- venom8599, on 07/10/2009, -1/+7@EntropyFan
From the same page you referenced:
"(I documented this over two years ago in How to Clean Install Windows Vista with Upgrade Media.) Will this method work in Windows 7?
I believe it will." - Choobie, on 07/10/2009, -4/+10My torrent edition OS was $0.00
Fedora 11, XFCE spin. - eatporktoo, on 07/10/2009, -2/+8it's $150 for 3 licenses... I suppose you don't have 2 friends to get together so you only have to pay $50... Also, please explain how and why you think Windows 7 is a repair. And don't you dare say it's a tweaked version of vista, because every OS release is a tweaked version of its predecessor
- zeth006, on 07/10/2009, -0/+5If they release a full-install family pack for 3 licenses for roughly $200-300, I'll actually consider it. I could easily split it among my my bro, my sis, and me.
- jekkin, on 07/10/2009, -8/+13Vista's fine. You're an idiot.
- Chupacabraz, on 07/10/2009, -1/+6For a very limited time the single upgrade edition is $50. This was stated as a short-term promotion. The new family pack is an ongoing thing.
- ThanatosST, on 07/10/2009, -1/+6XP had a lot of problems when it came out as well.
- ultrafez, on 07/10/2009, -0/+4Whichever disc you use is neither hear nor there, the fact is they still make upgrade versions.
- itsbob, on 07/10/2009, -0/+4They act like they have some competition...
