"And I'm an iPhone manufacturer." - 3rdDay, on 11/08/2009, -12/+105I like Win7.
/Vista survivor. - DolphinGL, on 11/08/2009, -4/+80"One has to wonder--are sales of Win7 doing well because people can't wait to rid themselves of Vista? Or are sales of Win7 doing well because of Win7's own merits?"
I would bet it's neither. I would bet the increased sales are from impressionable XP users itching for a contemporary OS. People who listened to other people trashing on Vista who didn't know WTF they were talking about. Most people who were regular users of Vista liked it just fine, myself included.
That said, I still upgraded to Win 7 when it came out. Not out of a dislike of Vista, just because Win 7 was simply better, just like I liked Vista better than XP before it, and 98 before that. - VinceIP, on 11/08/2009, -12/+86Windows 7 is awesome.
- inactive, on 11/08/2009, -11/+59To be fair, sales of dog-***** flavored ice-cream is higher than Vista's first month,
But well done MS nonetheless. Great OS. I'm using it right now. - Timmyftw, on 11/08/2009, -2/+40Its ***** like you that got 7 pulled from MSDN.
- DolphinGL, on 11/08/2009, -3/+32Apple: Creating fanboys who hate microsoft without actually knowing why.
- drGt1987, on 11/08/2009, -2/+29Although I am not supporter of such monopolistic behavior, I think Apple would do the same thing if they had chance to do that :) Actually, they're doing the same with their iPhone
So, when new version of iPhone comes to market, we can say: Poor users lucky Steve
:) - macmcraeart, on 11/08/2009, -15/+37"Hi, I'm a PC."
"And I am a douche who doubles as a shiny status symbol manufacturer." - Exodin, on 11/08/2009, -2/+23A lot of people are upgrading even from XP. Like... me. So far I can't imagine going back despite the odd Microphone mute when certain applications are open.
- jayskulls, on 11/08/2009, -3/+21Guess all those launch parties paid off
- m3suka, on 11/08/2009, -6/+24Well it's not really hard to beat Vista's sales. They sucked.
- inactive, on 11/08/2009, -0/+15- You need 7 licenses. Buy family packs (3 per pack i think). They're cheaper per license.
- Activation. - inactive, on 11/08/2009, -1/+15Try DOS box, or run it in compatibility mode.
- Solkre, on 11/08/2009, -0/+14But please, continue!
- chikuten, on 11/08/2009, -3/+16You're retarded.
More people drive a Toyota Camry than a lot of high-end cars combined. Does that mean that the high-end cars are crap? No. You're basically saying that something is crap because it's used less, and that's retarded. - tnmagician, on 11/08/2009, -1/+14/Notabot
I bought a new windows 7 laptop the day of release. I hadn't used it at all during it's beta/public release. Having a five button touch interface, scrolling etc all in one spot allows me to control the thing with very little effort.
If a linux variant could get itself up to this level of usability, I'd switch. Can't afford a mac. This time, microsoft got it right. - CaughtThinking, on 11/08/2009, -4/+17Bwauaha. Perfect.
- inactive, on 11/08/2009, -7/+19Do you realize that your entire life is now based on making a fool of yourself over a ***** computer company? Now tell me...is that not the saddest thing you have ever heard?
- evil-doer, on 11/08/2009, -0/+11right click on tray speaker, playback devices, communications tab, make sure "do nothing" is checked, or something other than "mute all other sounds"
- mithrasinvictus, on 11/08/2009, -0/+11For most of those users, buying new hardware meant they were forced to buy a vista license.
- DarkShroud, on 11/08/2009, -0/+11I'm running Win7 on a few computers with only 1gig of ram just fine. I would run a memtest on that PC if I were you.
- neutron7, on 11/08/2009, -2/+12"we dont have much to offer so we will just trash the competition!"
- macmcraeart, on 11/08/2009, -0/+10I hear that flavor is a big hit with the canines.
- lukas88, on 11/08/2009, -0/+10lol @ dos box suggestion
- inactive, on 11/08/2009, -3/+131. W know what percentage a quarter is.
2. This is an article about Windowsa 7. It has absoluely nothing to do with Apple.
3. If you don't see the HUGE difference between the two sitautions, you are hopeless. - bdbr, on 11/08/2009, -2/+11Apple really seems to be stretching with their commercials, now that Win 7 isn't the easy target that Vista was.
- piieerrrree, on 11/08/2009, -0/+8Obviously you don't know Windows OS.
ME, anyone? - Definition, on 11/08/2009, -1/+9You forgot ME. Did you like ME?
- etx313, on 11/08/2009, -1/+9Behold the power of marketing.
- gmweezel, on 11/08/2009, -0/+8MSDN != MSDNAA from what I understand especially since I can only log in to the latter. Windows 7 was pulled from MSDN Academic Alliance shortly after release. Luckily, I downloaded it before then and I was able to download my ISO after the removal still.
- Barackalypse, on 11/08/2009, -0/+8I'm really curious what percentage of Vista users are upgrading versus XP users, which sort of provides a barometer as to how much people still think Vista sucks.
- Flashtone, on 11/08/2009, -1/+9digg loves us some windows 7
- MacHarborGuy, on 11/08/2009, -1/+8what should the compare it to? Windows ME?
- twigboy, on 11/08/2009, -0/+7if you dont, you'll get babies
- MacBookForMe, on 11/08/2009, -2/+8...and iPods...
- KibibyteBrain, on 11/08/2009, -0/+6Windows 7 is still on MSDN for all paid subscription levels. It's MSDNAA which has been impacted.
- tushyd, on 11/08/2009, -4/+10Well that's what happens when you actually market well and learn from mistakes.
- lukas88, on 11/08/2009, -2/+8I'm trying to figure these out:
-If I wanted to put windows 7 on all my computers (there are about 7), would I have to buy more than one copy?
-How does MS limit the number of installations, or do they? - DoctorPeptalk, on 11/08/2009, -2/+8XP always looks like a hard laugh with its tongue sticking out
- rolf, on 11/08/2009, -0/+6"-If I wanted to put windows 7 on all my computers (there are about 7), would I have to buy more than one copy? "
Legally, yes.
"How does MS limit the number of installations, or do they?"
Generally, one copy per PC (perhaps defined as 1 copy per motherboard, shrugs, it used to be per CPU or core before they corrected it). If you have a site license, it's may work different, but I don't think 7 is enough for a discount.
http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/ - pika2000, on 11/08/2009, -3/+8Big duh. If you have a limited time 50% off pre-orders, obviously you'll have a ton of sales number since people don't want to lose out on the deal. It's obvious marketing/economics. Let's see the retail sales number excluding the pre-orders, shall we? If Vista was sold at 50% off, it would've been selling well too.
- inactive, on 11/08/2009, -0/+5Heard at Redmon:
Uhmm, so... what do we do now? - LordStryker, on 11/08/2009, -0/+5He said he didn't agree with the analysis of vista users dumping to Win7. I said I sort of agree with the analysis of Vista users dumping for Win7. What seems to be the problem?
- alpha88, on 11/09/2009, -0/+5newchap, no way in hell is Vista better than XP. It looks prettier, but that's where it ends. It's clunky and slow in comparison.
- that1jewishguy, on 11/08/2009, -1/+6You should definitely stick with Apple.
"If I were Microsoft" - well you're not, you never will be, and nobody cares.
"No wonder Apple's sales of Macintosh computers are booming." - Seeing as Apple owns a very small share of the marketplace that's possible, if MS boomed anymore Apple would no longer exist. - KibibyteBrain, on 11/08/2009, -0/+5It depends, actually. If you use all 7 computers for full general use then yes you need 7 full paid licenses. However, if you use most of them for development and test purposes you can get an MSDN or TechNet Operating Systems subscriptions, which allows you unlimited installs of Windows provided they are only used for "development and testing". Another money saving option is to get a Windows 7 Family pack, which is a way to get 3 copies for use in the same "household" for about $150.
- DirtyVicar, on 11/08/2009, -3/+8Don't we have a full-blown recession going on? People are stampeding to upgrade their freaking OS when XP/Vista are perfectly fine for most users?
- StenL, on 11/08/2009, -0/+5WTF are you on about, the XP search was one of the worst things about the OS. It was fiddly, slow, took up way too many resources and didn't even find what you were looking for 50 % of the time. The new search can be used from the start menu, searches very fast and finds everything within seconds with no resource drain whatsoever. Seriously, the new search is one of the reasons I couldn't wait to get off XP.
- ChiffX, on 11/08/2009, -2/+7I'm building a new computer soon and I'm planning on shelling out the dough for a full copy of 64-bit win7 (i hate upgrades).
What are the pros and cons of retail vs oem? -
