- R0ko, on 10/16/2009, -26/+169buy???
- enantiodromia, on 10/16/2009, -25/+168How about they just make one damn OS and stop all this retarded silliness?
- Chrysalii, on 10/16/2009, -6/+78Lets see
One won't even be seen in your country (legally) - Home Basic
One won't be available to normal consumers at all (legalyl) - Enterprise
One is OEM only, and won't be on shelves (likely only on netbooks, and maybe Newegg) - Starter
One will not receive any fanfare at all (or very little) - Ultimate
One Home (premium...eh)
One Professional
and they're what they say on the tin. If you're a home user...if you use it professionally...hard choice. Even Ultimate has that name like it's for the enthusiast. The only real hard choice is 32bit or 64bit, and that's not even hard.
wow...that was difficult, but thanks for the sensationalist headline meant to draw the anti-MS trolls. - ryanspeck, on 10/16/2009, -7/+68It's stupid to keep implying there are six different versions; one version is for developing countries, one is OEM-only, and one is only going to be noticed by IT professionals. Those three versions you'll never buy, see or a store shelf, or order off of NewEgg. As far as consumers are concerned, there are three versions. And, really, the whole "consumer/business/enthusiast division" between those versions is about all you need to know to make the choice.
- mrgr8avill, on 10/16/2009, -4/+56I want the one with the word "Ultimate" in the title. I don't care how much it costs or how many features it has that I will never use. Just give me the ULTIMATE!!!
(Marketing department's wet dream) - norman619, on 10/16/2009, -8/+54When they did that users complained they were being forced to buy crap they didn't need. They listened and gave customers more options. Yet people still complain.
- PinkyTheWinky, on 10/16/2009, -7/+45Ive honestly not had a single problem with cracked software. I use no cd cracks for games I own because its stupid to insert the cd the whole time. Plcaes like TPB have comment threads. If you read the comments you usually quickly see if there is something wrong with it. Thats why it works.
They have been tampered with. There is no nagging and registration/activation bs. - jrm125, on 10/16/2009, -1/+27Yea but that wouldn't make for a sensationalist headline to draw in the trolls.
/sarcasm - B5tKUnT1, on 10/16/2009, -12/+36Yeah, my favorite version is the TPB version.
- MacBookForMe, on 10/16/2009, -2/+24I run all 3 on 1 machine...am I duck, too?
- Aurabolt, on 10/16/2009, -6/+27MD5, noob.
- norman619, on 10/16/2009, -20/+38There are 2 items you really shouldn't use bootleg versions of. They are your antivirus and your OS. You have no idea if they have been tampered with or not.
- jrm125, on 10/16/2009, -6/+24Windows is hardy difficult to install. 7 is ridiculously simple (even my gf managed it).
It installs in under 30 minutes, restarted once without assistance, and then only asked a few simple questions.
By comparison Linux managed to crash twice during my install and couldn't find drivers.
OSX I wouldn't know, came pre-installed and haven't had to mess with it. - WeAreDejaVoodoo, on 10/16/2009, -12/+29Personally I prefer to run Windows 7 Botnet Edition.
- bratterscain, on 10/16/2009, -6/+23And when some were thinking Win7 was going to be like that, I'd hear people say on forums why can't I have my optimized Gamer edition, Media edition, etc to have a more stripped down and optimal OS. MS can't win, apparently.
Me, I'd prefer just a basic OS with as little clutter as possible. I'll be buying Home Premium as I don't need XP mode. When I do need a VM, Virtualbox suits me fine. - mark076h, on 10/16/2009, -6/+23I would like Ultimate but i am guess MSDNAA will only get PRO.
- iziizi, on 10/16/2009, -0/+17How about 1 copy, which lets you choose the features you want? win win.
- Numbski, on 10/16/2009, -4/+20Good luck with that...
- Horious, on 10/16/2009, -5/+21"Frankly, neither is Windows 7 Ultimate. Originally Microsoft didn't plan to sell Ultimate except as an option on high-end PCs; we suspect that changed as much because PC makers weren't interested as because users were."
Jesus christ, who wrotes this, Charlie Kelly? - Balanced, on 10/16/2009, -1/+15You're right about the difficulty of installing ducks! First getting them to sit still is a real pain, then hey poop all over the desk, and don't ask me about the bill...
- MacParrot, on 10/16/2009, -0/+12Did you really say there's only one version of Linux? Wow...just...wow
- evilesttoast, on 10/16/2009, -7/+19Are you serious? Linux would be the most difficult for an inexperienced user to install.
- jrm125, on 10/16/2009, -0/+12Yes, they only get Pro. I've had it a few weeks now...totally worth it. The Ultimate version doesn't really add anything I need, especially at this price.
- digitalpencil, on 10/16/2009, -3/+15TBF, it's practically 2010. they should ALL be optimized and a modern OS that doesn't come with a media center is ridiculous.
- SaxxonPike, on 10/16/2009, -1/+13LOL at the article.
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like? - Calcio, on 10/16/2009, -3/+14I think it finally makes more sense to buy the consumer version than the 'ultimate' - unlike Vista...
- whatit, on 10/16/2009, -2/+13Eh? Keep in mind that we'll probably only see the Home Premium and Professional version. You may see starter on a netbook or something, but for most people its either home premium or professional. People buying their box in store, will probably just get home premium if the trend with vista continues.
- Krissam, on 10/16/2009, -2/+13Because a releasegroup wouldn't have their reputation smashed if they did something like that?
- RealmDown, on 10/16/2009, -1/+11Quack
- bratterscain, on 10/16/2009, -8/+17Enjoy your hidden viruses, keyloggers, and root kit. If there's anything you shouldn't pirate, it would be the OS just to maintain a solid foundation for all your other data.
- tradderjohn, on 10/16/2009, -1/+10so which 1 of the following version(s) are you running ?
http://www.linux.org/dist/list.html
I always like asking a linux "expert" which kernel version they are using
and they say unbuntu 9.? or some other version with number. - EmailAddress, on 10/16/2009, -0/+9if you get the Pro version for free through MSDNAA, I think they can do a "windows anytime upgrade" (WAU) to Ultimate... but it's such a rip-off. At the store the difference between Pro and Ultimate is so small; but the "windows anytime upgrade" from Pro to Ultimate is allegedly ~$140 ... WTF?
I would think $50 is too much for a WAU for Pro to Ultimate. I will wait and see on release day for official info... if the WAU from Pro to Ultimate is 140... I'm getting bootleg version of Win7 Ultimate, even though I have access to free legit MSDNAA version of Pro.
They want to rip me off for a few features... I want the language pack (2 languages) of Ultimate... 140 for that *****? ***** you. - MattBlackCat, on 10/16/2009, -22/+31I want the one that doesn't suck
- mason092, on 10/16/2009, -1/+9@norman619: Except when a Microsoft employee posts the file hashes of the iso on technet.
- ssttuu, on 10/16/2009, -6/+14Or you could use a real OS image from Microsoft and get the OEM key from certain places, that I have never visited... ever.
- digitalpencil, on 10/16/2009, -2/+10OS X can only be installed on mac hardware (without hacking) thus no activation. it's the same as a lot of Apple software, they don't have serials.
The only titles to be concerned with are Home Premium, Pro and possibly starter. The only thing i find laughable about Starter is how locked down it is.. i mean why in ***** can't i change my wallpaper?! it's ***** ridiculous that they'd cripple something so arbitrary. - blapierre, on 10/16/2009, -6/+14You forgot the *
*Also comes at a $400 premium for the exact same hardware. - Crimeodial, on 10/16/2009, -1/+9Yeah, it's really hard to choose between home premium and professional. There's only two options that matter, much like (GASP!) XP.
- hydrodev, on 10/16/2009, -1/+9Linux is great... till you need something you are used to using with out a fight. For example games and camera software.
- Crimeodial, on 10/16/2009, -2/+10Yes....switch to Linux so so you never have to work on your computer, are you serious? When I use Linux, it's BECAUSE I like to work on my computer.
- overnine9k, on 10/16/2009, -16/+24Because options are good? MS sell software. Why does Apple have so many lines of machines instead of 1. Why do each of them have options for internals instead of just being 1 model each. Why does't Apple stop this retarded silliness.
- Livewired, on 10/16/2009, -0/+7xino You shouldn't be using SHA-1 any more. It's broken. You should be using SHA-2 instead.
- MacParrot, on 10/16/2009, -3/+10@DP
Because he really doesn't know what sarcasm means - VictoryGin, on 10/16/2009, -0/+7Sorry MacParrot, you closed your tone tag outside of it's containing sarcasm tag. That won't validate.
- themastersb, on 10/16/2009, -0/+7I didn't see Enterprise. I'll have to check that again.
- pjpete, on 10/16/2009, -1/+8No Remote Desktop on Home Premium? Seriously? Even Vista Home has RDC.
- rmxz, on 10/16/2009, -2/+9You have no idea who tampered with your software anyway.
Google "windows NSA key" for speculation of the US government back door into Windows.
There's plenty of documentation (even from the vendor) of the NSA backdoor in Lotus Notes
http://www.heise.de/tp/r4/artikel/2/2898/1.html
I bet every country in which Microsoft has developers has their own back door too (mostly disguised as accidental security holes). - Myztry, on 10/16/2009, -1/+8But it's a bit lame when any version of Ubuntu or OSX can connect to a domain but a version of Windows carrying a Premium designation can't... Microsoft uses bundle baiting to oversell by limiting basic functionality.
- thecheat1, on 10/16/2009, -0/+7Pro is what's offered through my school's MSDN, Enterprise is what was given to my work through Microsoft's Partnership or whatever.
- jrm125, on 10/16/2009, -2/+9Snow Leopard erased my settings.
