- wontstoptalking, on 01/09/2008, -10/+188I have to say that Bill Gates is an amazing man. I'm not talking Microsoft vs Apple here. As a person, NOT AS AN ICON, Bill Gates has done amazing things. He donates huge sums of money. Jobs is an obnoxious man with a "Macs rock PCs are for losers" personality. And seeing all those videos popping up the past few days such as what he plans on doing after he retires and that hilarious video that makes him look cooler than Steve jobs. He is an awesome nerd and an awesome man.
- Shogi, on 01/09/2008, -1/+101Dugg for Gates throwing up gang signs when the video stops.
- jjpertusch, on 01/09/2008, -0/+78CES 2008 will be forever marked as the point when the internet completely pulled a 180 on it's opinion of Bill Gates.
- zxxgp, on 01/09/2008, -4/+55 I am an apple person myself but I have to say I do respect Mr.Gates. He has done some awesome things for the world of computers. Personally I think people should use the operating system that makes the computer run like they think the computer should be running. If Windows makes the computer run like you want it to then use Windows. If OSX makes the computer run the way you want it to then use OSX. I don't think it is a matter of which is better.
- crazysamz, on 01/09/2008, -20/+65Bill gates is a very innovative person.
Steve Jobs is an ***** that acts as if his company invents everything.
The Zune is an awesome Product, and is very innovative.
The Ipod was also very innovative, but it hasn't really added anything new or innovative recently (at least not anything useful) (The touch was dumb, it's a PMP trying to be a smartphone, and it miserably fails)
Xbox and Windows are 2 great gaming platforms that have very new ideas about doing things.
Apple and Gaming... Wait, did I just use those two in the same sentence??!!
Windows is innovative in many ways, and is used in most computers.
Mac OS is also very innovative, but it's lack of compatibility with hardware, software and many other things (like games) limit it from being actually popular, hence the reason for it's low market share.
Microsoft Vs. Apple, now you can see how the companies really are. - MeatBiProduct, on 01/09/2008, -3/+37Steve Jobs isn't just a prick on tv hes one in real life. Ask any programmer that has ever worked for him.
- dtt1167, on 01/09/2008, -4/+36I completely agree, between him and Warren Buffett, they are the coolest Billionaires around, always super nice to talk to.
I've had the chance to talk to him before and he's just a genuine nice guy, and ultimately comes of as the uber cool ubernerd - inactive, on 01/09/2008, -0/+31You can tell his hand is still in Guitar Hero mode.
- dtt1167, on 01/09/2008, -0/+25Anyone who has been to any of the Berkshire Hathaway shareholders meetings while Bill has been on the Board, will know that Gates has been the guy in the video for along time. It's refreshing to find that more people are starting to see more than a cyborg robotic business killing machine out of the man. His values and ethics are complimented by his ability to be so down to earth about the great wealth he has acquired
- MeatBiProduct, on 01/09/2008, -4/+28Thats what we call sound business plans where I come from.
- Google
- Apple
- Yahoo
All practice the same thing.
Apple doesn't squash competitors - it just doesn't compete.
Google buys IT ALL.
Yahoo keeps pace with Google.
Bet you have a gmail account, a mac, and Yahoo Instant Messanger? oh and you use digg which supports microsoft advertising.
Tell me your hands are clean and I'll take your opinion as valid. - Dylson, on 01/09/2008, -1/+24Bill Gates is a natural at leading the way in terms of a successful foundation, a successful charity, and is a good family man. I have a lot of respect for him.
- kingmanic, on 01/09/2008, -2/+24Tax dodge or not, giving away billions (~37bil) is fairly large chunk of change. The man is said to be worth 59billion so it's 2/3 of his wealth. Sure after about 1 billion all the rest is just imaginary wealth in all practical ways but serious it's 60% of his networth.
- wontstoptalking, on 01/09/2008, -3/+24I love Gizmodo. They always have the best coverage with most hilarious stories. They snuck into CES last year dressed like security gaurds. I love it so much more than Engadget.
- xkingADROCKx, on 01/09/2008, -6/+24Scarily correct
- innocentsinner, on 01/09/2008, -1/+18Richard Branson seems like a pretty cool dude, too.
- Shogi, on 01/09/2008, -2/+18It's not, never has been, because better is subjective. Any honest person in touch with the computer industry will admit that all the OSes have their ups and downs, but the bottom line depends on what the user wants/needs and what the developers do with it.
- drunkard, on 01/09/2008, -1/+16I've always had great respect and admiration for Bill Gates.
- MeatBiProduct, on 01/09/2008, -1/+10but your comment wasn't - dugg down.
- jasmus, on 01/09/2008, -3/+12Wow, what's with all the Bill Gates love, and Blu-Ray love all of a sudden? This is DIgg right?
- inactive, on 01/09/2008, -2/+11Bill gates is a nice guy, considering he's the richest man in the world. You'd think he'd have a big ego like that ***** Mark Cuban, but he's the complete opposite.
- joshcxa, on 01/09/2008, -1/+9Says the person with the apple avatar
- Speed, on 01/09/2008, -0/+7We were doing so well without a Ron Paul post. Why'd you have to ruin it?
- michaelb1, on 01/09/2008, -9/+16Bills awesome but you can't compare him as a man to Steve Jobs companies ad campaign. Steve and Bill are actually friends.
- bluenullity, on 01/09/2008, -1/+8CaptNemo gets a blocking for being completely naive about how the world works.
- Shenaniganz08, on 01/09/2008, -0/+7If all these videos are from a single interview can we please just have the entire interview as opposed to small clips.
If not nevermind :P - shadowpr0ph3t, on 01/09/2008, -2/+8Can you guys please stop comparing him to Jobs every damn post. I remember the video yesterday with Bill. Constant bashing of Jobs in the comments, but the video was about the differences in MS and Apple. But diggers are fanboys. So they must post 500+ comments of crap and hate.
Digg me down but it's the truth. This site is slowly turing into flame wars with all the new members. Hate comments instead of helpful opinions. - wontstoptalking, on 01/09/2008, -0/+6That is the best explanation I have heard on the subject so far.
- thatsmyaibo, on 01/09/2008, -1/+6I went from Windows guy to Mac guy over the past few years (though I still build Windows machines). I have to say over the last couple of days, Gates has impressed me more than he has over the past few years. Though I was never a huge fan of Windows, Gates is nothing short of a genius and a pioneer in the history of the PC. MS is going to be screwed without him.
A great business man and all around person. - inactive, on 01/09/2008, -4/+9With more available money in his wallet than you'll collect in your lifetime. Now go back to your job and remember to ask paper or plastic, jockboy.
- linuxrocks2007, on 01/09/2008, -0/+4Unlike you, I actually used the reply button.
- luigi1015, on 01/09/2008, -1/+5It's grrrrreat!
- Speed, on 01/09/2008, -1/+5But he has something (other than money) no Digg user has: a wife.
- Ymeg, on 01/09/2008, -0/+4It seems to me you are referring to the purchase that made him rich?
Also: Edison was a crook and a liar. He will always be ethically worse than Gates in the way he did business. He stole the blueprints from Dracula and he went insane. Would you agree that Edison was worse than Gates? Honestly, I smell baseless hate here. - Fizban140, on 01/09/2008, -0/+3Right...that made sense to you and about two other people.
- inactive, on 01/09/2008, -0/+3Thank you. If only every Digger could see this for themself before submitting story after story about why you're an idiot if you're not switching to OS X or Linux.
- surreal1111, on 01/09/2008, -0/+3It's nice to see Bill in the limelight again, it's been steve jobs this and that (yes i am a macgeek) but i used to worship bill for his technical and business ability. Even in the linux community Linus Trovalds is the "icon", Microsoft lost their focal person (Bill) and i believe lost trust of it's users because of this. I hope this marks a turning point for Microsoft they have the experience, technology and funding to do some really incredible things.
- m00n1, on 01/09/2008, -0/+3It's even more when you look at the context. It's not like he goes to the ATM and sees "balance: $59b". Most of that is Microsoft shares, and he's limited in how much he can sell - it needs to be declared publicly, selling too much would depress the stock process purely by volume, and would also undermine confidence in the stock further dropping the price. So, a lot of that $59b is really on paper. As a result, it's actually more than 60%. I'm surprised he's managed to give away so much.
- ICSU, on 01/09/2008, -1/+4Maybe some apple fanboys.
Non-biased people realized that Gates is a great man already. - Kanidia, on 01/09/2008, -0/+3This is what I don't really like about digg: A lot of users are just plainly negative and rude. Wits may get you high diggs, but they aren't always polite.
- Ymeg, on 01/09/2008, -0/+3An OS is something you should not get attached to. It is sad when progress or personal usage is decided by fan boys. The fact is Windows is not a shack, linux is not god, and Macs don't make you gay.
- Dhekke, on 01/09/2008, -0/+2And of course, nothing Jobs or Torvalds say is heavily opinionated and they're both never wrong.
Screw the whole "If you wanna be cool and insightful in the world of tech, hate Microsoft".
This man did great things, created great products and helped the world go ahead. Just admire what he did forgetting about the wrong turns just like you do with Torvalds and Jobs. - travbrack, on 01/09/2008, -0/+2I love the position of his hands in the tumbnail. He makes some goofy hand gestures sometimes.
- CSharpSauce, on 01/09/2008, -0/+2Its nice to finally not be scoffed at when i talk about how great Bill Gates is...
- inactive, on 01/10/2008, -0/+2Bill isn't as showy, doesnt say BOOM !! He isn't a salesman.
His goal was to get the broadest amount of users and developers to work together.
Jobs is a salesperson that wants everyone to buy "from Apple" to work "the way Apple wants" to "pay developer royalties" whenever you work with Apple.
Gates was a Junior at Harvard in Computer science when he dropped out. Jobs was a 1st semester drop out at Reed college in Poetry and Literature. No joke !!
Any developer that has worked with Apple usually hates them, either for being narrow minded, or for trying to monetarily gouge them.
So given all that, yeah I'd rather have lunch and meet with Gates rather then Jobs anyday. He is much more impressive! - tayf, on 01/09/2008, -0/+2I think philanthropy has changed Bill. I think he's learnt that there are bigger problems to worry about in the world and greater rewards to reap than accumulating wealth and therefore he is more willing to speak frankly about Microsoft's achievements and forthcomings. I think he cherishes Microsoft because it has given him this opportunity to make change. He seems enlightened.
- stockjones, on 01/09/2008, -0/+2Bill just owned you. You can not turn back time.
- estvir, on 01/09/2008, -0/+2Gizmodo is probably just doing the same as all those sites who spread Top 10 lists onto 11 pages.
- MeatBiProduct, on 01/09/2008, -3/+5Color isn't the same? This is probably why you're a ***** designer. You don't even know the difference between a computer and an expensive design monitor. How about you come tell my SGI trinitron monitors that their color balance and temperature balance are off . Then I'll teach you about white balancing and color profiles so you don't look like a fool again.
Pantone chips agree - its not your computer its your monitor. - thatsmyaibo, on 01/09/2008, -1/+3All that technical design stuff is irrelevant as long as you're familiar with colors. You don't need a $2000 monitor if you have a $50 pantone book. You're just having a dick measuring contest with your SGIs which is irrelevant. And having the tools doesn't make you a better designer. It actually requires talent. It's like saying Jimi Hendrix has a $200 guitar so he sucks.
- falafelkiosken, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1even as an "apple-fanboy" who dislike a lot microsoft has done (read: IE), I think it's pretty interesting to listen to Bill Gates, he seem to be a decent guy
