- inactive, on 12/05/2007, -24/+546Wheee!, it's too crappy to pirate.
- phore, on 12/05/2007, -9/+228Interesting strategy.... Microsoft decided that if they made an operating system no one wants, half as much people will end up pirating it. I applaud you Microsoft, well played.
- jeffsback2223, on 12/05/2007, -6/+104I was going to... but then I heard all the crappy reviews.
- newbee70, on 12/05/2007, -13/+104I just wish we could force MS to buy it back, I got mine when I bought my new laptop. Now the laptop gets used very, very little and I hate vista alot more. how to ruin a perfectly good laptop.
- WiseWeasel, on 12/05/2007, -4/+83That's the point. People don't see any reason to pirate Vista instead of XP SP2...
- deadbaby, on 12/05/2007, -3/+78The pre-activated OEM version out there is just as easy to pirate as XP was.
- latova, on 12/05/2007, -5/+63Last time I checked I could go to a torrent site and get a cracked ISO. Yes Microsoft, that is certainly a success in the name of combating piracy.
I'd go check to see if it worked, but honestly I don't want vista on my system. - bingo000, on 12/05/2007, -10/+64Microsoft rejoices Vista's limited vision.
- look4alec, on 12/05/2007, -10/+59Piracy = Demand from experienced computer users. The people who pirate an OS are too smart to even desire Vista. Microsoft has a long way to go.
- krische, on 12/05/2007, -6/+54Title incorrect, should read:
Vista *wanted* half as much as XP. - blankhorizons, on 12/05/2007, -11/+55It's kinda like thinking Dane Cook is a good actor. Some people might feel the same way you do, but you generally keep it to yourself.
- Rikushix, on 12/05/2007, -16/+59Maybe I'm just an idiot, but I'm running Vista on my laptop and I like it.
Is it a crime to like Vista? - cdbeshore, on 12/05/2007, -1/+42Windows ME Rarely Pirated: Microsoft Rejoices
- trying2hide, on 12/05/2007, -4/+45Yes, now Microsoft has proven that you CAN make a product so bad that people won't steal it.
- canthraxp, on 12/05/2007, -8/+49Vista has this reduced functionality mode. I always wonder if it's set ON all the time...
- BigManOnCampus, on 12/05/2007, -7/+46I can't stop laughing. Microsoft is effectively admitting that noone likes their new OS with a huge smile on their face.
They don't seem to get it.... Piracy = demand. No piracy = no demand. - atdigg, on 12/05/2007, -6/+40To bad that you need to buy a new computer to convertto Macintosh. However, I spent $0 on Linux (actually I donated some money but that doesn't actually count) and it works just as fast as it worked in the first day.. still no viruses or spyware, and I didn't have to buy another computer.
- strictnein, on 12/05/2007, -3/+36I own a legit OEM version of Vista Ultimate x64 (bought it from Newegg). After about 5 months of running it, I reinstalled XP Pro (not legit). I still have the Vista install on my system and can boot into it, but with the XP SP3 coming out with a supposed 10% performance increase, I see less and less reason to switch back everyday.
- Drahkar, on 12/05/2007, -7/+39It's not FUD. Vista isn't worth upgrading to yet. And if its not worth upgrading it why Pirate it?
- exomni, on 12/05/2007, -6/+38Why is Microsoft happy that nobody wants their operating system?
- beatryder, on 12/05/2007, -15/+46Ubuntu.com
enjoy. - msaleem, on 12/05/2007, -4/+34So I guess when it comes down to it, there is only one version of Vista, the "Pirated less than XP edition".
- inactive, on 12/05/2007, -2/+30Throw XP on it. Just check out the interwebs for any drivers you might need beforehand.
- spudnic, on 12/05/2007, -0/+28Yup, dances through the genuine avantage checks easier than a paid for copy from what I hear
- stmiller, on 12/05/2007, -4/+31Then, those half-as-many who pirated Vista went back to their pirated copies of XP.
- Colesif, on 12/05/2007, -3/+27It's because everyone who pirated XP to begin with pirated Vista. They then realized how much they hated Vista and re-pirated XP.
Ending with:
2 XP
1 Vista - andywebb95, on 12/05/2007, -6/+28No more of a crime than to like Linux, OSX, or earlier versions of Windows.
Use the OS that suits you best that's what I always say. - MerryMortician, on 12/05/2007, -1/+22if you are downloading Elton John you have much worse problems.
- chris9902, on 12/05/2007, -7/+27yes everyone should use Apple. If there's one thing that a growing industry needs it's 1 hardware/software solution. Don't worry about competition or innovation. nope. Also, Apple would be so much better than Microsoft. It's not like Apple abuses it's dominant market share or gets in bed with the record companies and strangles it's users with DRM.
- blankhorizons, on 12/05/2007, -5/+25Microsoft can't even give it away
- missingnoh4x, on 12/05/2007, -5/+25If he's currently barely using the laptop at all due to Vista, might as well put Linux on there. Regardless of what you think of Ubuntu, you can't deny that it's a step up for the laptop from its current status as 'paperweight'.
- troydoogle7, on 12/05/2007, -6/+25The piracy protection doesn't work , the reason is that its just no one wants it,,, even if its free! The next step is microsoft will start paying us to take it?
- inactive, on 12/05/2007, -7/+25oh that's they're new piracy protection system make it so ***** no one even wants to download it for free.
- ThinkBox, on 12/05/2007, -4/+22I have Vista Ultimate... and TinyXP Rev06.... I use TinyXP.
- Pilot85, on 12/05/2007, -1/+18Burn the witch!
- mrscotter, on 12/05/2007, -3/+20I really like the vista media center, especially with my xbox 360 and plasma HDTV.
- sgglynn, on 12/05/2007, -8/+24If I did pirate it, I would just downgrade back to XP within a day anyway
- CraigJ, on 12/05/2007, -3/+19True to a point. I'm a developer and I've been using computers since the late 70's, however, just because I know how to make windows do what I want it to doesn't mean I always want to exert the effort. Vista is always getting in my way and asking stupid questions.
- Senn, on 12/05/2007, -6/+21I dunno... it's done a damn good job at replacing Windows for me.
- sk11, on 12/05/2007, -10/+25I wouldn't use vista even if MS paid me to use it.
- dalittle, on 12/05/2007, -5/+20Windows XP is probably the last Microsoft OS I will use on my personal day to day system. Next OS will be Linux. A dip in piracy may be the first indicator of a larger problem for MS.
- latova, on 12/05/2007, -5/+20Everyone isn't rich and can't spend thousands of dollars on a computer you can't upgrade.
- teh_techie, on 12/05/2007, -18/+32Right. Ubuntu is a perfect replacement for windows. Ubuntu is great, granted, but NOT a replacement.
- ingoldsby, on 12/05/2007, -11/+24It's not a crime. It just means you are in the minority.
- m3rkvry, on 12/05/2007, -2/+15In other news, the producers of Ishtar are applauding the powerful encryption on their DVD release, citing that no one seems to be pirating their movie.
- jostheller, on 12/05/2007, -4/+16My wife refuses to learn Linux, which means one computer in my household has a dual boot of windows/Linux. Over the weekend I upgraded my wife's OS from Vista to XP, and she has been very happy with me ever since.
It's no wonder Vista isn't stolen as much. - ingoldsby, on 12/05/2007, -7/+19I had a fully working pirated copy of Vista ultimate (patched fine, etc.) and uninstalled it to put my valid copy of XP back on. That OS is in serious need of help! I don't think the fact that they are seeing fewer instances of the pirated OS has anything to do with stricter copy protection, and more to do with the fact people don't like vista.
- missingnoh4x, on 12/05/2007, -2/+14MagicCake: Reviews usually go into plenty of detail to explain what is and isn't good about the OS, especially in comparison to XP. Relying on one review's numerical score is dumb, but looking at several reviews' explanations of why Vista sucks tells you more than enough.
...Stupid Digg comments giving me an error upon trying to directly reply to any comment nested that far. At least make the message say that comments can only be nested so much rather than the oh-so-misleading "Your session has expired, please refresh the page before commenting." - RoboDonut, on 12/05/2007, -2/+14It's not due to DRM, it's due to lack of demand.
Nobody wants Vista. - xerexes1, on 12/05/2007, -2/+14Seriously, do you work for Microsoft?
