Like most Microsoft Service Packs, SP2 won't work on your system if you haven't already installed SP1. If you're thinking about trying the SP2 upgrade, you'll have to hit SP1 first."
Funny, I can't recall a service pack that wasn't cumulative.... - artfuldodga, on 12/04/2008, -0/+33as a native feature.
- MacParrot, on 12/04/2008, -2/+26Using Vista via Bootcamp. I think I'll hold off for awhile until it's been certified for use. Vista with SP1 has been working great
- archer75, on 12/04/2008, -6/+24I like the new windows explorer now, I don't see any backwards compatibility blunders and media file support(which hasen't changed since XP) is getting improved with native avi and h264 support in windows 7. However codecs are a simple download. My Vista HTPC can play any video format out there.
Every app or game I have thrown at vista has ran fine. - byronm, on 12/04/2008, -0/+16I love imgburn but can't stand nero which has become bloatware. I barely use the windows burning functionality itself and will probably never use the blu-ray functionality anytime soon but i guess its better to have it supported than to get slammed for not supporting it.
i'm guessing a major pc manufacturer is going to start shipping bd burners soon and asked microsoft to incorporate native support. - Proz, on 12/04/2008, -2/+16I hope so.
- byronm, on 12/04/2008, -1/+13Gateway's were notorious for not resuming wifi connections after resuming from sleep mode. I'm sure other manufacturers and wireless nics had the same issues (my hp has been fine) but they've fixed this and optimized how APM manages wireless networks so its quicker to resume period (and quicker to save power when not in use)
google is your friend - artfuldodga, on 12/04/2008, -1/+12while i won't be trying it out until general release, it looks good... with hopefully more features and enhancements added before RTM.
- Psych77, on 12/04/2008, -1/+12"Vista Service Pack 2 isn't for everyone.... etc".
No, the beta isn't for everyone. The objections raised in the section of the article are for the beta only. - Aitese, on 12/04/2008, -1/+11The story was posted about 15hrs ago...the first comment came an hour after that. YOU are the first person to mention Linux.
- vizeroth, on 12/04/2008, -1/+11It's not too bad in Vista if you make sure to go into the options and tell it to finalize the disc. It's not the best, as you don't get the extensive options you'll get in almost any other burn software, but for a basic tool to copy some files to a CD/DVD or using WMP to burn a music disc, it's not terrible.
Of course, if you don't finalize the disc, you're going to find the disc doesn't work on almost anything other than a Vista machine. - mirunit, on 12/04/2008, -3/+12You don't use bluetooth, wifi, x64, a laptop (better battery usage), or RSS Feeds?
Vista is not a insecure operating system if you are not an idiot with it, granted there are more threats but that is mutually inclusive with ubiquity. Anyway, here I am typing this to you on a Vista system with nothing but NOD32 + defender that still runs solid after 9 months of solid use. - Elranzer, on 12/04/2008, -1/+8The service pack structure of Vista is different than past versions of Windows. Not only are they not cumulative, you cannot slipstream them either. You'll have to buy/download a whole new disc/install of Vista if you want to have a SP2 disc.
- vat0r, on 12/04/2008, -0/+7ImgBurn is free and pawns the competition. All it really needs to be considered the best is a nice gui.
- Spoomeister, on 12/04/2008, -1/+8Windows XP SP3 wasn't cumulative either. You had to have at least SP1 or the installer would quit.
Sometimes there's just too many updates and fixes to include, and making these cumulative would make the download too massive. - jaygeeze, on 12/04/2008, -12/+19Wow! "Let you record data onto Blu-ray discs".
- DarkShroud, on 12/05/2008, -0/+6They're called drivers, up date them.
- cawpin, on 12/04/2008, -5/+11Windows Explorer is fine in Vista. You can make it act exactly the same as in XP if you want. Also, the only "reason" WINE is working better with some apps than Vista does is because you have set it up to run in a certain compatibility mode, ie Windows XP or Windows 2000. You can do the same in Vista and the apps will work just fine.
If you think UAC is bad, you're just finding things to complain about. Mac OS X and Linux have had the same functionality for a long while and it works just fine, just like in Vista. - PhoenixAvatar2, on 12/04/2008, -1/+7You'd prefer them not give you these upgrades for free?
- byronm, on 12/04/2008, -3/+9Its actually a pretty clean/stable beta. Most of it is consolidated patches already released but i for one and glad to see the kernels getting standardized across the board - should definitely alleviate some security risks by having a standard base OS build for a change!
It does feel snappier but the only machine i've installed the update on is my Windows Media Center system which is headless and powers 3 xbox 360's. - Elranzer, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6And I hope they open the spec for exFAT but it ain't gonna happen.
- mirunit, on 12/04/2008, -3/+8From my experience with the built-in windows DVD/CD Data burner I might be abit apprehensive. Nero + ImgBurn seem to work fine for burning data (Nero for data disc) but Windows gives me nothing but partially corrupt disc on a regular basis.
- sirmasterboy, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5OEM Bios emulator, can't be broken by Microsoft or it would break every dell/gateway/hp, etc... Since it's exactly how they activate all their licenses...
- MrViklund, on 12/04/2008, -2/+7What a very misguided view.
- groo68, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4what do they use?
- kronix2, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4That page is wrong, then. SP3 refuses to install unless you have SP1 or SP2 installed.
- pmc64, on 12/04/2008, -1/+5Ya, seriously. I don't know if JR Raphael knows what he's talking about.
- hammr, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3Have to agree with Elranzer.
It also is missing the "back" button that lets you move up one folder to the parent directory. If you are viewing the directory as a path instead of breadcrumbs (i think that's what MS calls them), then the back button is mandatory. - kronix2, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3As others have said, SP3 requires at least SP1 before you install.
Vista SP2 requires Vista SP1 because both Vista and Windows Server 2008 share the same codebase. WS2K8 shipped with SP1 integrated, so bundling SP1 and SP2 together would double the file size for WS2K8 installations.
At least, that's Microsoft's reasoning. - burn0u7, on 12/05/2008, -1/+4Why upgrade from XP to Vista? uh.. cause XP is what 4+ years old now, has 3 service packs and it really doesnt take much of a machine to run XP Gee i wonder why it has better compatibility... am I missing something here? Not to mention once "Windows 7" releases next year, Microsoft will eventually End Of Life Windows XP.
in my case vista runs much better on my machine than xp does. I dont have crappy hardware either, and yes, i would like a cookie. - kdorf, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3A good question. Will vistaldr still work? I speculate that it will, as SP1 was supposed to kill it and didn't. Never know though.
- mrbutter, on 12/05/2008, -0/+3Fragger how about having an XP cd without SP1 on it?
/sigh. - heavyglow, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3for all those with cracked copies of vista i would hold up with installing sp2 until we know if it breaks the crack or not. PS: you can thumb this down all you want, i dont care.
- liltbrockie, on 04/14/2009, -0/+2No it wasn't
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2You need to get back on the phone with Microsoft. I have called them countless amounts of times when I change my hardware and just be firm with them - you have only changed your motherboard firwmare. This usually isn't enough to trigger the activation, so if you want to tell a lie, say your motherboard died, you got a new one and the rest of the PC is the same. They should never question you about this and they will re-issue you a product key or they will activate it on the phone for you.
They have always solved issues for me, even really complicated and tricky ones. You just need to call them again, remain firm and you will be fine. - ozziek, on 12/08/2008, -0/+2Installed the beta via Windows Update, no issues whatsoever. System is snappier than SP1, comes out of sleep quicker and is responsive instantly. All existing apps etc seem to work fine.
- yujie, on 12/04/2008, -3/+5I hope they removed the activations
- 11oops, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2HD-DVD?
- Elranzer, on 12/04/2008, -5/+7Windows Explorer is the WORST thing about Vista.
Copying files (especially lots of them) from one place to another takes a long time, unnecessarily. The same operations in XP would be instantaneous.
As a shell, it's even worse. It never remembers my folder view settings (icons, details, list, etc). Detail view always has the wrong options by default (no "filetype" listing). It always thinks a bunch of my folders are "media" folders when they're not. The filetypes tab is GONE from the Folder Options control panel (this is just inexcusable). It constantly thinks my flash drives need to be "repaired."
Also, it has the goofy menubar-less look introduced in IE7, and even if you re-enable the menubar, which is placed retardedly under the address bar, you can't get rid of the goofy widgets. - inactive, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2"Like most Microsoft Service Packs, SP2 won't work on your system if you haven't already installed SP1"
I call *****. XP sp2 and XP sp3 aren't that way. I'm pretty sure most Windows Server service packs are the same way. - SwornPacifist, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2I had this specific issue with my Toshiba Satellite laptop running Vista, after using sleep mode about 10 times in a row (putting the computer to sleep 1-2 times per day for a week, etc) it would wake up and be unable to connect to my wireless connection. I had to restart to get it working again. Minor annoyance, but nice to see they're smoothing these bugs out.
(and before anyone starts the Linux cheerleading, my laptop also dual-boots to the latest Ubuntu, and doesn't natively support sleep on my laptop, so it's not much better) - inactive, on 12/04/2008, -1/+3Even if true, his statement would still be wrong: "Like most Microsoft Service Packs"
This would be the first case of a non-cumulative Vista SP. So how does he get "most" from that? - inactive, on 12/10/2008, -0/+1Did you try typing the password correctly?
- godsdead, on 12/04/2008, -6/+7I bought vista, i know bad... and then i decided to update my BIOS to my motherboard, as it was soo out of date, and boom locked out, i phoned them, and they said as i have an OEM licence that, i had to buy a new copy! how out of order is that?
So i had to crack my copy of vista, so will this service pack 2, delete my crack and leave me with an unusable operating system? - MrViklund, on 12/04/2008, -1/+2The only thing you need to know is when it's ready.
Lame article. - inactive, on 12/05/2008, -1/+2Ok douchebag, even if true, this one exception is not "most". Also, it isn't true according to MSFT's site:
"Supported Operating Systems: Windows XP Home Edition ; Windows XP Professional Edition ; Windows XP Service Pack 1; Windows XP Service Pack 2"
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?Fa ... - abhkum, on 03/19/2009, -0/+1actualy xp is 7+ years old
it was released in oct 2001 - inactive, on 12/10/2008, -0/+1I came in here just to find this comment and Digg it. I didn't recall ever having to go get a previous SP just to apply one, but I see there actually are some instances of having to do that. I wouldn't say "most Service Packs" are like this, though.
- liltbrockie, on 04/14/2009, -0/+1Did you look?
- DarkShroud, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1Add into that Vista & Vista SP1 use different code bases & kernels. So it's more trouble than it's worth to include SP1 in this.
Unless something changes SP3 should be able to include SP2 for Vista & Server 2008. -
