- oboredone, on 03/26/2008, -7/+119I suppose I'm a rare case, but I upgraded without a single issue.
- DiggLive, on 03/26/2008, -23/+91I'll always use Vista over XP because:
1) Protected mode on IE 7
2) UAC is far less annoying than being a Limited User on XP
3) You don't have to use IE to get critical and optional updates
4) Windows Explorer in Vista kicks ass
5) No "Default Programs" API where you can set all defaults that a program can have
6) Snipping Tool is sweet
7) More information on digital signatures (A regular dialog with a Continue button for something digitally signed compared to an orange heightened alert dialog with Cancel/Allow buttons for something unidentified)
Vista by itself is miles ahead of XP on every level. The only problems people seem to be having is software/hardware support, which Microsoft can't be blamed for. - estvir, on 03/26/2008, -5/+62Actually, no, these people are the rare cases. Most people will upgrade without a single issue. It's always the vocal minority and with MS, it's even force.
- inboxnews, on 03/26/2008, -3/+48Ditto. Upgraded without any issues. PC works much better now.
- estvir, on 03/26/2008, -11/+55What a pathetic non-article and the editing mistakes are awesome. I guess the anti-MS morons have little actual things to post, so mythical stories like this are the newest fad.
Hey guys, time for another Vista speech recognition flaw. - vikingboy, on 03/26/2008, -6/+46Vista SP1 is the best thing to happen since XP SP2
- itseffinkasey, on 03/26/2008, -3/+36Honestly I just installed SP1 30 minutes ago and I'm testing it out and its working wonderfully.
- epiffffany, on 03/26/2008, -4/+33For what it's worth, I installed SP1 without any issue. This article title seems like FUD.
- odoyle6, on 03/26/2008, -2/+26Add another to the update with no problems pile. All my transfers are much faster too. Using 100% network bandwidth now.
- theuber1337, on 03/26/2008, -2/+22Yeah. I was thinking the other day, "Hmm.. maybe I should check out that new SP1." But apparently it was already installed right under my nose. So smooth, I never even noticed.
- slippiefist, on 03/26/2008, -3/+21Vista never gave me any problems before SP1 and it hasn't given me problems since. putergirl always posts these anti-MS stories. Vista-bashing is just the latest fad. The vast majority of Vista users are satisfied and have no problems with it.
- Hortnon, on 03/26/2008, -4/+20^
Doesn't understand how Vista works. - DiggLive, on 03/26/2008, -5/+21Wow! Software has bugs! Seriously, you should look at this:
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=6416 ...
"Trunk fixes since branching for 1.5 (20050812) = ~ 14,175"
New software is going to have bugs, it's the reality of introducing new features.
But I suppose Apple releases all those 300mb update packs for nothing. - theuber1337, on 03/26/2008, -2/+18It's a threat OR a menace!? Oh dear.. there's apparently no winning is there?
- f4nt0m4s, on 03/26/2008, -1/+16I haven't received the automatic update to download and install SP1 because my audio driver (Sigma Tel High Definition Audio) is not compatible with SP1 yet...however, it was nice of the folks at Microsoft to withhold an upgrade that would cause problems on my machine. I'm excited to install SP1, apparently there are some fixes for the nvidia GO series. I have a GO 7900 GS and it has problems with Vista...
- HigherLogic, on 03/26/2008, -5/+20Shut the ***** up Apple fanboy.
- scallon, on 03/26/2008, -3/+18Then go get back on your tricycle and stop whining!
- Hortnon, on 03/26/2008, -3/+17The only problem I was having was the file copy dialog issue, which this fixes. So, it was worth it to me. I had errands to run anyway while it installed.
- lerker, on 03/26/2008, -2/+13I'm as happy as anyone to see SP1 receive some scrutiny but this article is rubbish. It doesn't have anything to say. Buried.
- SLockhart, on 03/26/2008, -3/+14No, people who have had no problems with Vista or SP1 are the majority.
- banmaster, on 03/26/2008, -4/+15Went on flawlessly for me also (even though I use a 'naughty copy of Vista with a bootloader thingy).
These stupid anti-MS morons might be amusing if they weren't so PATHETICALLY sad! - slayernine, on 03/26/2008, -1/+10I haven't really had any Vista issues on any of my machines. SP1 is just a nice bonus with the added reassurance of stability.
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -3/+12Chalk me up to another happy SP1 users. Upgraded 4 boxes in this house (notebook, 2 desktops and the HTPC) to SP1 and all working fine. I believe most people don't have a problem with Vista, it's just those who dislike Microsoft are a very vocal minority. I honestly feel that most PCs built in the last 2-3 years with 1GB RAM will have no problems with Vista whatsoever. Those who suffer from issues are likely using dodgy drivers from unsupporting manufacturers.
- KMartSheriff, on 03/26/2008, -1/+10If it ain't broke don't fix it? Yes, that's a great mentality. I'm sure if we used it in the real world technology would progress much faster.
- TopBanana, on 03/26/2008, -3/+12Mine worked fine before, and after SP1. Only difference I've noticed is when copying files you get an ETA estimate straightaway - yay!
- DiggLive, on 03/26/2008, -2/+111) It has a lot to do with the OS, seeing it blocks access to everywhere except the cache. There's a Firefox bug on Bugzilla that wants the same technology included.
2) I want to know when something can change the system. It's no different than having to enter a password to install a .deb on a Linux-based OS.
4) The "Views" option lets you preview many different ways to display files in a folder, and the "Organize" option lets you perform various tasks. It's a huge usability improvement from my eyes and makes things much easier.
5) It's something where it lists various programs you have installed, you select them and you have an option for that program to be the default for any format/protocol it can handle. It's an easy way for the user to control how things open and in what programs. I appreciate the feature a ton.
6) Snipping tool comes with Vista, and I find it useful. Therefore, Vista is a more useful OS with it.
7) It is much better, because when running a file, it's important that it be unaltered and indentifable. If it lacks a digital signature, there's no way to tell if it's been maliciously altered. The same technology is used in OSX and Linux-based systems for upgrades to make sure they're valid. I personally have the option set where if any program lacks a digital signature, it won't even execute.
Your last point is about gaming performance, which only applies to people that actually use PCs for gaming. There's so much more advantage to using Vista, both security-wise and usability-wise, that it's worth giving up a few frames a second. The average gamer isn't going to orgasm just because they run something with an extra 5 fps, only enthusiasts. - Farmer77, on 03/26/2008, -2/+11How the hell this crap ended on the front page.
The author of the article says that PC World report the service pack is safe to use with a slight performance increase and the author said he himself installed the service pack without any problems but goes on to say "others" are having problems with it without naming a source or how much "others" he is talking about. It could be 2 out of 200 for all we know. Talk about sensational BS journalism. - Dantetheinferno, on 03/26/2008, -1/+10You're doing it wrong.
***** THE RIAA. - SSUK, on 03/26/2008, -2/+11I still remember the transition from 98 to XP. Which was a MUCH bigger gap to cross because XP is an NT-based operating system, a completely different architecture to 98. Now look at XP, it's king of the hill. These people experiencing problems and crying to high heaven will probably do the same with Windows Seven, saying Vista had less driver faults etc, etc.
Don't try installing Vista on a machine under the minimum specification, do not try to use 5-6 year old hardware, do not attempt to run Visual Basic 6 and below software on Vista, chances are they all wont work. Welcome to the future, if your PC blows chunks, keep with XP. - epiffffany, on 03/26/2008, -2/+10Excellent argument and supporting evidence.
Meanwhile, in real life... - shlemielo, on 03/26/2008, -7/+14^
Is just plain wrong. - BobEwell, on 03/26/2008, -1/+8Any moron can build/repair PC's.....just look at The Geek Squad. So why should I take your advice?
- HigherLogic, on 03/26/2008, -1/+8I actually had to lookup what the snipping tool was. I don't see it in my Accessories menu though, is this something that's installed for everyone? It looks like a pretty cool program actually.
- fugazied, on 03/26/2008, -6/+13please stop using IE, that browser is a disaster. At least wait till IE 8 then microsoft will officially be only 2-4 years behind firefox, opera and safari.
- xMotu, on 03/26/2008, -1/+72. Better safe than sorry.
- sadilak, on 03/26/2008, -1/+7Yeah, The only bonus is the Shiny Icon and an expensive machine. No thanks
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 03/26/2008, -1/+7Because Crysis and COD4 run way better on Leopard than Vista...
or not. - ronaldmonster, on 03/26/2008, -0/+6http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snipping_Tool
Wiki has everything.
But this looks cool actually. - schoate09, on 03/26/2008, -2/+8Leopard blows, hard. Never have I used a buggier OS that keeps "unexpectedly quitting". I've had more kernel panics in my last 5 months with leopard, than I've had my life with all iterations of Windows.
- Hortnon, on 03/26/2008, -2/+8Why did you have a bunch of languages installed in the first place?
- SkinnerIJA, on 03/26/2008, -2/+8Wow...so unprofessional from the Washington Post. I don't know what's going to be under the table of SP1, hopefully it's not unnecessary eye-candy and add-ons.
- fallenidol, on 03/26/2008, -2/+8more vista scare mongering. buried.
- sadilak, on 03/26/2008, -1/+7I love the fact that file copying is really a pleasant thing now. No hiccups at all.
- heresy_fnord, on 03/26/2008, -1/+7I have Vista and SP1 now and no problems here. I think the issue is either people that hate Microsoft or Linux users that want Vista to be terrible. People bitched and moaned about XP when it first came out and yet no one wants to remember that. Now XP is like some godsend or something. Just ridiculous. Vista really isn't bad at all, as a matter of fact in my 6 months of using it, it is a FAR, far superior OS to XP.
- KMartSheriff, on 03/26/2008, -1/+6Lotus Notes sucks donkey balls.
- GerbilSoft, on 03/26/2008, -0/+5"I've had a few lock ups during games but thats normal, even for xp."
It's sad when people come to expect lockups as normal. Lockups should *never* occur on a system, even when running a badly-written app. The OS should be able to terminate said app and return to a usable state. - banmaster, on 03/26/2008, -1/+6MY god, people still use Novel for anything??? Wow, just, wow.
- Koush, on 03/26/2008, -1/+6From personal experience, the upgrade was as smooth as possible.
- gimmeit, on 03/26/2008, -1/+6I run vista ultimate 64 bit on a 1000 dollar machine. I score a 5.6 rating and have had not one single issue, even with gaming. Dunno what the hubub is about. Learn how to operate the OS and you'll be fine.
- hamish, on 03/26/2008, -1/+6I just upgraded from Vista 32 bit to Vista x64 with SP1, and i couldn't be happier!
If you're gonna get SP1, I suggest you do a clean install -
