http://www.meganova.org/files/633907.html - portis, on 10/11/2007, -13/+190Vista Ultimate doesn't need to be hacked/cracked FFS! There is a Dell OEM activated copy that has been floating around for quite some time now.
- FRANKeB, on 10/11/2007, -5/+151I love the Chinese copyright attitude as my Chinese friend puts it: Chinese copyright is the right to copy anything they like.
- Create, on 10/11/2007, -6/+149I would think instead of spending tons of money trying to prevent all of this... they would simply lower the cost of the operating system, and make it easier for people to understand... 6 flavors of vista or whatever it is, why not one that does it all at a reasonable price.
less money spent on anti-piracy efforts lowers the overall cost to consumers and increases Microsoft's market share. - steven401, on 10/11/2007, -9/+115@ mygrayarea
You missed out the best one, ME. - Gerz1219, on 10/11/2007, -7/+113If Microsoft was losing money with all these ridiculous anti-consumer measures, they wouldn't be implementing them. As the article points out, hackers will always find out a way around activation and registration. But Microsoft doesn't care about them really, because it's a very small percentage of the overall market. They just want to make it impossible for the average user to burn their friends copy or download a torrent, or at least make it enough of a hassle that the end user shrugs and decides to just buy it.

- AcePup, on 10/11/2007, -18/+90Same thing happened with XP, it was all cat and mouse between the pirates and Microsoft. It's only a matter of time before Microsoft gives up again with trying to rid people of pirating Windows Vista.
- smarusich, on 10/11/2007, -13/+78If Vista was $100 it wouldn't be worth stealing and people would just buy it.
- bodger, on 10/11/2007, -8/+73You can't compare Apple and a MS operating system in that way. MS may have an elaborate activation system, but Apple requires you to buy a rather expensive hardware dongle from them to run OSX (it's called a Mac)....
- spidrw, on 10/11/2007, -4/+63Ha, "I work in a game stop nad" - classic.
- netburnr, on 10/11/2007, -32/+75Exactly, OSX has no serial number or registration required, but because it is close to 100 bucks more people are willing to actually but it. Hell I got the Family Pack (5 licenses) and only used it on 3 computers...
- Dumbledorito, on 10/11/2007, -3/+46In a way, cracking and piracy can help a company like Microsoft. It increases their market share, and even pirates will wind up buying hardware or the occasional software package, too.
The best example of a beneficiary was Macromedia Flash. The rampant piracy of the Flash program is what allowed all those budding young animators to give Flash a try and make it ubiquitous. - chicken101, on 10/11/2007, -9/+50Not everyone (1) uses computers for the same reason and (2) will have the same opinion as you do.

Yeah and Circuit City wasn't losing money on DIVX. Thats why we are all using disposable DVDs today.
Large companies are run by group think, where really bad ideas like DRM end up sounding really good, even when they are dismal failures over and over and over. - reed311, on 10/11/2007, -15/+48...and theres the obligatory Linux comment. You're comparing apples to oranges,
- Phocion55, on 10/11/2007, -20/+52It's a matter of Microsoft's wants versus the customer's needs. Unfortunately, Microsoft only cares about what's good for Microsoft.
This stuff bloats the OS, wastes system resources, and adds no value whatsoever to the customer.
I don't understand why people pay for "features" like this. - CletusJones, on 10/11/2007, -4/+35***click here for a virus***
- Homunculiheaded, on 10/11/2007, -8/+39thank goodness there's only one flavor of linux!
All sarcasm aside, as an ubuntu user I don't see what all the hate its towards the '6 flavors of vista' especially since, for the average consumer there's only really 1 or 2. Home basic or Home premium. Arguably home premium is the only that the average home user needs to buy (and if you look at OEM desktops that's what they come with). If your an above average home user then you can probably figure out, and are willing to pay for an upgraded version. - DrAtheist, on 10/11/2007, -9/+39piratechaos - "Apple charges for [...] point releases"
Funny that, I upgraded from 10.4.0 to 10.4.1 10.4.2 up to 10.4.9 for free.
You must be confusing the numbering system somewhat. Think of it like this.
10 = NT
.4 = XP
.1-9 = sp1, sp2 etc.
So yes, you pay to upgrade from 10.3 to 10.4, but it's no different to upgrading from 2000 to XP. - pathy, on 10/11/2007, -6/+36Do you also tell them that the games that *require* Vista will also require require either 8800s or 2900XTs? That, if their system is slowed down by Vista, they probably shouldn't be trying to run those games anyway?
Seriously. Games are going to be working on XP for a while. A few years, if not more. There's no reason they shouldn't unless they're intentionaly made so (Halo 2) or need DX10, and DX10 will take quite a while to become the norm, everything will have a DX9 fall back - Crysis will too.
Meh. I like Vista. - asforme, on 10/11/2007, -20/+49Give me a break, Woo hoo there's 6 versions, you pay for the features you want. If you know enough that you think you can do an operating system upgrade then you should be able to do a google search and figure out what you need, if not then you should probably stick with whatever came oem on your computer.
There are tons of reasons to hate vista and M$, their useless DRM is a prime reason, but the "OMG 6 versions is too complicated for me to handle" argument is BS. - EtherGnat, on 10/11/2007, -8/+35"If Vista was $100 it wouldn't be worth stealing and people would just buy it."

I smell a conspiracy theory. - metalica77, on 10/11/2007, -0/+25I don't recommend that you guys get this from a public tracker. I'm almost sure that some anti-piracy organization will be running a honey pot and capturing all the IP's. At least run PG2.
I suggest cruise on over to your favorite private tracker just watchin out for ya guys - libertao, on 10/11/2007, -5/+29No, Vista Ultimate and Vista Ultimate are overall fairly similar.
- Elranzer, on 10/11/2007, -2/+24"Our goal isn't to stop every "mad scientist" that's on a mission to hack Windows. Our first goal is to disrupt the business model of organized counterfeiters and protect users from becoming unknowing victims. This means focusing on responding to hacks that are scalable and can easily be commercialized, thereby making victims out of well-intentioned customers."
In short: We only really care about mass pirating that affects our profits, not the script kiddie in his garage. We'd rather have the Average Joe using a pirated version of Windows than Ubuntu or Mac. - crimsonnblue, on 10/11/2007, -6/+26@btgoss
Good luck with that. Let me know how that works out for you. - deadbaby, on 10/11/2007, -5/+25That's the problem with having a monopoly: You have nowhere to go but down. Microsoft can't lower the price of Windows because they can't make up enough sales, in added volume, to cover a lower price point. They're chasing pirates because it's their only real potential market where they can find some growth.
- Fighter2a, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20Probably because they are playing games.
- reed311, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21Good for you. Congratulations.

That is the per-motherboard version. If you change your motherboard, you will *legally* have to purchase another copy, if you don't wind up getting your key blacklisted when you try to reactivate on the new system. Read the Vista EULA about this OEM version.
As a matter of fact, I'm not sure if you're legally allowed to change motherboards on ANY version of Vista, except the volume license one. - zyl0x, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Yeah, DUH!..
..what's vLite? - Ramble, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19Apple use OpenGL.
Obviously you don't know anything about DirectX, but I can't really be arsed to explain it, but if Apple did make their own graphics SDK (a huge waste of resources) do you really think anyone would actually use it? - pathy, on 10/11/2007, -9/+25Really?
That's amazing. Perhaps I will become productive when I too realise that my operating system is the only thing that makes me unproductive. Or perhaps that'll be when I stop enjoying myself playing games, listening to music and start doing nothing but word processing. - yanked, on 10/11/2007, -5/+20@FRANKeB

Heh. These are the people that go, "Six versions of Windows Vista is confusing," then turn around and say, "Thirty versions of Linux is choice!" - ripple123, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15I think vista is its own anti piracy measure.
/badumpssh. ill be here all night. try the veal. - Halaster, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14It is going to take a lot more than just another graphical SDK release to cause developers to stop using DirectX. OpenGL is a viable option already out there, and you do not see DirectX killed off. OSX would have to make their iEngine work with virtually all hardware in existence, create new standards, make developer friendly tools, and more. In addition DirectX has a 90%+ market share, since it is included with all Windows machines.
It would be great if things were so simple as just releasing something better and all of a sudden the old product dies, but that is not how the market works. It is not black and white, better always wins. - raid517, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15Erm... shoot me if I'm wrong, but isn't this just a simple unattended install?
Just like has been possible on almost all Microsoft OS' since almost forever:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=%22unattended+install%22&btnG=Google+Search
He probably uses a script to install the activation patch at the end of the install - but that's nothing new either.
Anyway unlike in other areas Microsoft actually likes their stuff to be pirated. (Particularly in the developing world).
It helps them create a dependency culture - and when a country's economy grows to such a point that it becomes prosperous enough to buy the software, MS steps in with the lawyers and with the full weight of international law to force them all to buy licences. (Hence why MS is also prepared to sell Office and Windows at as little as $3 a pop in developing economies also).
It's a bit like a drug dealer who gives heroin away for free. After these countries become addicted and dependant on Microsoft products, then they tell them they have to pay if they want to keep using them.
One of MS' chief lawyers said it himself when he said, 'Naturally we are against piracy. But if you are going to go ahead and pirate anyway, we would prefer if you pirated our stuff.'
So what the hey. MS makes a pretense at making their stuff hacker proof - when all along everyone knows they are secretly smitten that it is happening anyway. - Jones82, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13The only difference is Vista Ultimate costs more
- Ramble, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13You can do that already with vLite.
- dubbleenerd, on 10/11/2007, -6/+18@piratechaos,
Where did you learn that Apple charges for OS X betas? Its made available for free but in limited numbers to developers, who are the only people needing betas. How helpful is it to the development effort if MS provides free betas to everyone with an internet connection? Are you actually eager to run incompletely tested operating systems? If you are not a developer, how does Microsoft benefit from you running a beta OS. Non-programmers contribute zilch to the OS testing effort. - Fighter2a, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12No. But I'd like to click one while I order pizza on the internet and receive it through my window.
- davidcg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11@OBKenobi
All you do is say your hard drive crashed when you phone in and you had to re-install vista. boom key re-activated. I do it all the time. - pathy, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15nsmike,
You're wrong there. DX9 games can get the GFW tag, and they can happily run on XP.
That being said, Vista will be great for gamers. Obviously drivers are immature at the moment (Although both nVidia and ATi drivers are rapidly becoming much more stable and offering better performance now, still not quite on XP level, but getting there.), but eventually it'll be a great system for it. -
