- joe90210, on 12/31/2008, -7/+51why is it that internet bloggers and reporters are the only ones I know who keep talking about how bad Vista is? you'd think it's the most horribly unusable software there is.
- venom8599, on 12/31/2008, -6/+45I'd disagree with Vista being on the list, and especially with the author's reasoning.
1) Bitlocker's security problems aren't going to be noticed by most users--and there are plenty of alternatives--like TrueCrypt--for Windows.
2) Vista's UAC compares pretty well to 'sudo' on Linux. Though another reason it was implemented was to annoy users into annoying developers, so that apps would be written to not require admin privileges. It's not perfect, but it's a step in the right direction
3) So, because security researchers were able to exploit some holes in order to use old buffer overflow attacks, users should use an OS that's vulnerable to the overflow attacks without the extra step? Yeah, that makes sense.
4) PVP is only a factor if you want "premium" content (e.g. Blu-Ray). Don't want the DRM? Don't get the DRM'd content and it won't matter. At least the option is there to use it if you want it. - artofwot, on 12/31/2008, -2/+35Your Apple avatar makes your opinion in no way biased.
- MattFromSeattle, on 12/31/2008, -2/+33Oh come on, Windows ME wasn't really that.... buahahaha, I almost made it through saying that with a straight face!
- sparkplug890, on 12/31/2008, -3/+28at least Microsoft doesn't have Cuil.
- OdinsFury, on 12/31/2008, -11/+34Vista isn't that bad. I have no problems with it. I can't say the same for XP.
- inactive, on 12/31/2008, -8/+30This article is ***** stupid.
Buried as inaccurate for including Vista and WLM. - inactive, on 12/31/2008, -2/+15Actually, it's been repeated so often that almost all the people who are far away from the geek end of the spectrum are well-versed on how bad they've been told Vista is.
The perceptions are so bad Microsoft had to make an entire ad campaign calling it Mojave so people would look at it with an open mind. - inactive, on 12/31/2008, -1/+13i logged in to either say "bob" or + the first person who did.
- inactive, on 12/31/2008, -2/+12Bill Gates worst mistake ever was not getting the IE dev team to heed the css standards.
They thought they had so much market dominance that they could tweak the standards, designers would have to design websites so they looked good on IE first and foremost and they were right in that part with 90% of the market, but they pissed off so many web designers for not sticking with the W3C and forcing us to code for two sets of standards that I think it's been hate from designers bad mouthing IE every chance they get that's driven a lot of the erosion from 90% to about 70%. - phalanxcronos, on 12/31/2008, -4/+14How the hell does this blog post make it to the front page? The damn article doesn't even have a byline. Who the hell wrote this thing, whats this persons background?
Oh Vista bitlocker is vulnerable to a cold boot attack? Really? If someone want your data bad enough where they are actually going to break in and steal your computer well then, there going to get the data no matter what type of encryption you have on it.
As for system restore....it will still restore a virus even today, how the hell does system restore know the difference between a legit dll from a 3rd party driver or application over a malicious one, it doesn't. - Vulphaestion, on 12/31/2008, -0/+9Venom*
- sparkplug890, on 12/31/2008, -0/+9how about the first bold sub-headline in the article?
- Cymrubeats, on 12/31/2008, -3/+12I went so far as to buy a new copy of xp, when i bought this laptop, i was so caught up on the 'vista is *****' bandwagon. After a few weeks, and being the type of person i am, who doesn't like things going to waste, i decided to install it, lo and behold, i had no issues with installation, activation, drivers etc (i didn't install the 'branded' backup image, for obvious reasons, i download a RTM with sp1, wiping ALL detritus off the HD.) I wouldn't go back to xp now (my desktop is a p4, so that's still running xp of course...i meant in the future.)
I must add though, i can see how some people got ***** initially, and how the momentum built for all the (at times, justified) dislike...my bro bought a laptop with vista, and it ran like *****, even with a clean install. suffice to say, he got my copy of xp, and his laptop ran fine thereafter. - gcnaddict, on 12/31/2008, -5/+13You know what he should've killed? I'm asking for flames here:
The later MSN programs (MSN explorer, the MSN portal... possibly even MSN Messenger at the time).
The reasoning for this is simple: most of Microsoft's stuff through Live is based on what they did through MSN. In my opinion, they might've done better with a clean slate. (I still remember when Live was still experimental and hosted at www.start.com) - inactive, on 12/31/2008, -1/+9What's the hardest part about buying a Mac
Telling your parents you're gay - inactive, on 12/31/2008, -2/+10You're icon is an apple logo so i'm assuming you're one of those great superior folks who use software from Apple.
Who's up for a game of 3D chess? Oh but let's not forget the only major software company making decent software for OS X - Adobe. Better suck their dick too, right? - V3NOM, on 12/31/2008, -3/+10I can. But I still have no problems with Vista.
- Vulphaestion, on 12/31/2008, -1/+8It's kind of ironic, Adobe's programs actually run better on Windows, then Mac.
- pyrates, on 12/31/2008, -1/+8I definitely don't agree with these points the author makes. Here they are.
1) Vista
-it was the first version of Windows where you could run as a regular user so that is a good thing
-basic protection is warning the user something is trying to modify your system and if you're not expecting it, don't let it. OS X and Linux behave this way.
-bit locker encryption vulnerability was also in OS X's version of drive encryption and in TrueCrypt and is defeated if the user waits 10 seconds after they shutdown their laptop.
-UAC yes was designed to be on purpose annoying, but it was the fault of developers for years who coded for if you were an administrator and not a regular user of windows. It did push developers to code for a regular user such as mirc and emule now both can run as regular users and don't need admin privaleges
-the flaw in vista's memory protection feature had to do with legacy software that didn't use it, that was the problem. A lot of reporters missed this critical detail.
-PVP does not effect you if you don't view blu-ray movies on your computer. If you do, that's why you can watch them. That is also why you can't on OS X.
-Windows Vista is far from being Windows ME though, that is an outright lie for anyone who is claiming it's true
2) Windows live Messenger
-why was this even on the list? All the reasons are social engineering reasons of tricking the user into opening it or clicking on it. The exact same thing could have happened to any of the other IM networks out there. - Khast, on 12/31/2008, -1/+8Website down.... That was fast.
If it isn't mentioned in the article "Bob" should have been cremated.... which would have saved many "Paperclip" annoyances in future Microsoft products. Along with the problem Bob sucked horribly....worse than Windows ME. - BenBenMan, on 12/31/2008, -1/+7How is WLM on that list? The only reason people got viruses through WLM is because they were stupid enough to click dodgy-looking links. Sure it also mentions the remote code execution hole in the webcam/video call system, but who the hell clicks Accept on a webcam request from a random user they don't know?
- darkNiGHTS, on 12/31/2008, -1/+7Troll fail.
- 11oops, on 12/31/2008, -0/+5RTFA
- Aharoni, on 12/31/2008, -0/+5MSN Messenger is the standard in IM applications in many countries... regardless of its flaws, its a pretty big success...
- dontfriendme, on 12/31/2008, -0/+5"However, Windows Me received a number of complaints from users due to its unreliability, instability, frequent crashes and freezes."
isn't "unreliability, instability, frequent crashes and freezes" more or less saying the same thing in 4 different ways? - inactive, on 12/31/2008, -3/+8how about the "cracked by deepz0ne" sound forge files used in media player (2004)
- inactive, on 12/31/2008, -0/+5they tried to send bobs ashes in to space but the rocket had to be self destructed 2 times.
- TunaFishGangsta, on 12/31/2008, -4/+9That was the first one on the list if you learned how to RTFA.
However, I actually like Vista. If anything, it just needs to be fixed e.g. Seven. - bipolarruledout, on 12/31/2008, -0/+4Vista is a full version higher than XP or even 2000. There are trade offs made in every development effort and NT 4 certainly had it's share but Vista is by far a more extensive upgrade and like the NT versions before it is probably way ahead of it's time.
- GollyJer, on 01/01/2009, -0/+4Catchy headline to get the Apple fanboys digging, but seriously, this is one of the most ridiculous articles I've seen make it to the front page. It might be accurate if it were written 2-3 years ago. Vista works great on any machine built in the last two years. UAC has been improved. The most recent versions of WLM are awesome. Live Search is behind in some areas compared to Google but ahead in many others (shopping, music, images, celebrity search). I will give the author ME, but Microsoft pretty much did cremate it, so never mind. No point. The rest of the products have remained in development with some great results.
- Khast, on 12/31/2008, -2/+6I've had a chance to play with Vista. I used to think it was horrid. But, after actually using it for a couple hours, I don't think it is so bad. Just lacks on a lot of the backward compatibility, but otherwise it is a pretty stable OS.
I still run XP, but my next computer will either run Vista or Windows7. Depends on when I am able to afford a new computer. (Got a lot of other things I need to deal with first....) - Topher06, on 12/31/2008, -0/+4You can't "Can" an OS. At some point after the hundreds of millions of dollars spend and years of development of Vista, you just have to release.
Vista is a solid OS, really, its just that Microsoft tried to promote it as an upgrade OS and it really should have been an OS solid with new systems with beefier hardware requirements.
I really have had no problems with Vista and been using it since its beta days. But I also bought a new computer specifically to run it with dual core CPU, beefy GPU and RAID hard drives with ample RAM. I agree that Vista was a MARKETING disaster, but as for Windows technology its a solid step forward for Microsoft whether you believe it or not. Has there BEEN a massive virus outbreak on Vista platforms? This was the only thing Microsoft needed to prove with Vista is that they can build a secure OS to replace the gaping security hole that was Windows XP.
I akin Vista to Windows95, an introduction to a new generation of Windows technology that is far from perfect, but it a marked step forward from the version is replaced. Now that Microsoft has a secure OS environment to work on,they can work to develop an OS that offers better performance and is more streamlined and less annoying.
But all you twits complaining about how Vista runs on an 8 year old computer? Come on...
Had they scrapped Vista and worked towards releasing a new OS with Windows 7 after nearly a decade after releasing XP, you would have all complained about Microsoft being too slow developing a follow up to XP. - bipolarruledout, on 12/31/2008, -0/+4Bill clearly has a good since of humor about the whole thing but I'm sick about hearing how bad Vista is when it really is not. When it comes down to it the only complaint that holds any water is that it's bloated. It might not be for everyone at this point in time but people discount just how big an upgrade it is and how much unseen effort has been put into the architecture along with the new technologies that won't be fully utilized for years to come.
- MWeather, on 12/31/2008, -2/+5It'll be fixed when I can run it on half a gig of ram and embedded graphics with Aero enabled.
- umbrellainabin, on 12/31/2008, -3/+6These Comments Suck.
Also, Happy New Year to everyone ^_^ - venom8599, on 12/31/2008, -0/+3The only memories I have from ME were trying to help a friend troubleshoot random crashes. "An Unknown error has occurred in Unknown: 0x0000000", etc...
- EddieStarr, on 12/31/2008, -0/+3 Windows Me for sure has been the worst to deal with, espically from a netwokring standpoint. It is perhaps the only OS I know of that would randomly uninstall the "Client for Microsoft Networks" totally killing the ability to connect to the Internet either via Dialup or Broadband. I was soo excited when XP came out with a built in capability to negotiate PPPoE without having to use 3rd party software.
- ScottMitchell, on 12/31/2008, -2/+5@shikamoo: You didn't hear any complains about Firefox because they were able to essentially start from scratch. If they broke how something was rendered in earlier versions of Netscape, who cared?
For a better perspective on Microsoft's backward compatibility headaches, check out the blog posts at:
http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/
Here's the one I was talking about in my earlier post:
http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/archive/2004/12/ ...
"There are many "strangenesses" in the way Internet Explorer handles certain aspects of HTML when you don't run it in strict mode. For example, did you notice that the font you set via CSS for your BODY tag doesn't apply to tables? Or that invoking the submit method on a form does not fire the onsubmit event? That's because Netscape didn't do it either, and Internet Explorer had to be bug-for-bug compatible with Netscape because web sites relied on this behavior." - PullingTeeth, on 12/31/2008, -0/+3Maybe because it was in the article?
- fuzzynyanko, on 12/31/2008, -0/+3And the ashes scattered and part of it came to be known as Home

- ScottMitchell, on 12/31/2008, -1/+3***(I still remember when Live was still experimental and hosted at www.start.com)***
STILL remember? That was like, what, two years ago? - ilgaz, on 12/31/2008, -0/+2You should let ME get infected by a Windows virus/worm and watch the real fun.
Right after cleaning/deleting the infected file, it would put the file back on next reboot and brag about it to you. - 11oops, on 12/31/2008, -0/+2The biggest problem with Vista upon release was that none of the hardware manufacturers took time prior to its release to create decent, stable drivers. Sure, there were Windows bugs as well, but the majority of complaints I saw/heard in real life were due to unstable or outright incompatible drivers being used. Users were able to work around or deal with the small problems, but lost all respect for the OS when dealing with no sound (thanks Creative), BSODs for their video when adjusting above 1024x768 (thanks nVidia, Asus, ATi, etc.), BSODs when attaching a PnP printer (thanks HP bloatware), etc. etc.
In my opinion, there is no reason for the manufacturers to wait until after a major OS release to create stable drivers. And before anyone gets their panties in a bunch, I'm not talking about drivers for old or outdated hardware, but rather for hardware that was on the shelves during the beta phase, at release, and being sold post-release. - Jeremyz0r, on 12/31/2008, -0/+2soy.
- jakem1, on 12/31/2008, -0/+2Yes, and at the time this claim was made the suggestion to revert back to XP was panned. How are you better of with XP when it doesn't include any Bit Locker features?
- Kratos76, on 12/31/2008, -1/+3Vista Has been fixed, and anyone that has used it for more than one day after having installed sp1 will agree. Backwards compatibility patches are released regularly, and with sp2 on the horizon for feature upgrades, I have to disagree with all the Vista haters (including this article writer). Vista, with all the updates and patches, is a great operating system, that I use with pleasure.
