- yertthedigger, on 07/24/2008, -42/+328Proof that the hate is all in your heads. Apple and others I won't dare to mention have indeed brainwashed the Internet. Mojave some facts?
- futur4m4, on 07/24/2008, -21/+270If you have even a remotely modern pc (at least 2 GB of ram and a dual core cpu, you know, technology from 3 years ago), Vista will run great. The problem is that manufacturers are selling cheap notebooks with a celeron processor and 512 MB of ram with Vista home basic pre-installed. This obviously isn't going to make a good impression. I would consider a machine like that hardly worthy of running XP. People just need to accept that if you buy the cheapest computer in the store, you end up with the ***** computer the store has to offer. If you want to see Vista's cool new features in all of their glory, buy a modern PC. Otherwise, stop bitching. If it bothers you that much you could always install Linux, which I guarantee will perform much better...
- Striss, on 07/24/2008, -17/+191I think they should just have Steve Balmer in the Power Loader suit from Alien, smashing everything in his path and fighting off Apple users. Would make for some good TV commercials. I'd switch to Vista for that.
- DarkShroud, on 07/24/2008, -25/+155I look forward to this. I'm tired of hearing the lies spewing from Apple fanatics and other people who haven't even used Vista. I was a very early adopter of Vista and I didn't have any problems. Of course I had to wait until 2 months after launch for my video card's Vista driver to be released before I installed. Imagine that, a little research will prevent major head aches.
- InsaneOni, on 07/24/2008, -16/+112I like how they mention that the people "didn't have to install or connect [Vista] to a home network" since these were 2 features of the OS that were greatly improved. When my boot sector got corrupted, I just popped in the Vista DVD and it repaired it. I never had that kind of experience with XP. The other nice thing about Vista is that it autodetects your network card so you can get online and download drivers instead of spending 2 hrs trying to find your motherboard cd you know is somewhere in your room.
Overall, I've had nothing but success with Vista. Now realize I do have a pretty powerful machine (quad core, 4gb ram) but even something as cheap as a c2d + 2gb of ram will run Vista decently well. - antiver, on 07/25/2008, -19/+85In a related study, Apple fanboys were shown a "new" Apple operating system, code-named Garfield. More than 90 percent gave positive feedback on what they saw. Then they were told that "Garfield" was actually Vista.
- twiztidsinz, on 07/25/2008, -5/+58I have a RealTek onboard sound... works FLAWLESSLY with the included Vista drivers. And IF the drivers from RealTek decide to work (they have HORRIBLE support and installing their drivers is a gamble.. sometimes they work, sometimes they dont, other times they work, but you cant use the interface) then you get a little bit more functionality out of them... though in fairness, Vista's sound manager is pretty damned good.
- Wingdom, on 07/24/2008, -30/+80Vista doesn't suck, you just need a good computer. Its not that hard to understand. Yes Home Basic sucks, and no one should sell it, but anything other than that is great. I even have a hard time switching back to XP when I have to.
- kaidovak, on 07/25/2008, -9/+58Most of Vista's issues aren't with the OS itself, but rather poor driver support by third parties. (This is the same thing I've bitched about with linux and OSX for years... and yes, I use all three on a fairly regular basis)
- cheezintern, on 07/25/2008, -7/+51This is a comments section, not a great American novel section.
- Nysul, on 07/25/2008, -2/+41lol I have realtek onboard sound and it works better than my creative soundblaster under vista. I'm never buying creative again.
- blankoboy, on 07/25/2008, -7/+46I sat back in my office chair, folded my arms behind my head, closed my eyes and got the visual. A BIG smile spread across my face followed by a hardy laugh. My Japanese coworkers look puzzled and I cannot even think to explain what I'm laughing about. Thanks =).
- norman619, on 07/25/2008, -11/+49There really is no need to "market" Vista. It will inherit the XP user base just like XP inherited the 2000 user base even with them bitching like people are doing now with Vista. This has happened before and it will happen again...
- KingFog, on 07/25/2008, -6/+40See what he means? You just proved his point!
- lead2thehead, on 07/25/2008, -12/+44Vista is by far the most secure OS Microsoft has ever built. It takes a while to get used to because they've moved so many things around, but if you make the effort to learn it, it's pretty damn cool.
- cheezintern, on 07/25/2008, -13/+45I used to hate vista until I installed it on my new pc. Granted its a quad core, 9800 gx2 powerhouse, but vista ultimate 64 has run excellent and the only things that ever bugs me is the rearranging of where to find particular settings. Just like xp, once Microsoft got all the fixes and updates out, vista turned out to be pretty decent and usable.
- Raian, on 07/25/2008, -0/+31you obviously have never tried mojave...
- iofthestorm, on 07/25/2008, -2/+30You have to be joking, practically all integrated sound chips are RealTek and all the ones I've seen work fine.
- oMeSSiaHo, on 07/25/2008, -13/+40I'm an evil, money grubbing no nothing PC salesman and I deal with peoples misinformation everyday. People ask me if we have any computers that run XP and when I tell them no I ask why they need XP. They always tell me its because they've heard from a guy who heard from a guy that it sucks. Once I show it to them and let them use it they are always turned around and love things like indexed searches and just typing the name of the program they want.
Now I know this sounds like a commercial but its really just my experience. Apple is just so damn good at getting people to believe ***** they can just lie or mis-state the facts. I dont think Vista is worth the cost as a stand alone upgrade but on a new computer its better then XP.
Plus we've all gone through this before. I held onto 98 way longer then I should have. I knew people in 2005 who would only use Windows 2000. - AdmiralAcbar, on 07/25/2008, -1/+28I took out my robe and wizard hat...
- sockpuppets, on 07/25/2008, -6/+29You cannot possibly think anyone's going to read that.
- KingFog, on 07/25/2008, -8/+31Sad thing is, you're right. Slap an Apple logo on anything and the fanboys will come running from miles away to rave over it...
- bipolarruledout, on 07/25/2008, -8/+31All this bad vista PR is directly from the tech savvy "taste makers" who are so outraged over the vista "footprint" among others things that they have all but ignored the fact that vista is the most user centric version of Windows yet. It's been a perfect storm of negativity and falsehoods which has hurt vista and perhaps even the industry. Vista is not perfect but you have to take the good with the bad. Vista marks a very important transition period for the future of Windows and the PC. It solves many fundamental issues which are not immediately apparent to most people and lays the groundwork for revolutionary technologies which have only begun to be explored. Admittedly Vista may be too much, too soon and really has no killer applications to speak of but if you aren't planning a migration strategy to Vista or an alternate OS then you will likely regret it in the future.
- oMeSSiaHo, on 07/25/2008, -7/+29A $450 computer will at least have a Core2 and 2gigs of RAM. I think Vista's hate is mostly bad press and people who dont really know what they are talking about. I have an old computer with a 3700+ and 2gigs or RAM and it runs Ultimate fine. Best part was it detected my graphics card, TV tuner and wireless card!
- inactive, on 07/25/2008, -0/+21It worked for the XBox. How many do you think they would have sold if they called it "Windows Game Console" (a la "Windows Media Center")
- scy1192, on 07/25/2008, -14/+35mark my words, Vista works fine on 1GB RAM
- Phocion55, on 07/25/2008, -22/+42The reoccurring things I hear from people defending the Vista experience:
1. Get a new computer
2. Disable a crap load of annoying features
3. Tweak the install
.....and IT SIMPLY WORKS GREAT! - BOFH2, on 07/25/2008, -11/+31I used to hate vista. I started having to support it for my customers who brought in their PC with it on it. I now have one laptop with it on it that I use more then the others I have. It works great. I have not had a crash and beside the wireless issue I had (public vs private) I like it. I am using handbrake to encode a move for my ipod right now and used dvd decrypter to rip it with no issues.
- J3EBS, on 07/25/2008, -4/+22I installed SP1 with zero problems. My dad installed SP1 with zero problems. My mom installed SP1 with zero problems. My little brother had a problem.. he got bored of waiting for it and played Xbox.
But it's okay Mystikal. Maybe if you made some good music in the past 5 years, you'd have enough money to buy a computer more powerful than the average calculator. - iofthestorm, on 07/25/2008, -3/+21Uh, I don't think the average user would install it on mix-n-match parts, although I did and I've had zero problems whatsoever. And that was pre-SP1 too.
- scy1192, on 07/25/2008, -1/+18I don't know about Realtek HD Audio, but my AC'97 was detected and works fine.
- thedragon4453, on 07/25/2008, -1/+18I've got a newer laptop with vista (2.1 dual core, 1.5 gig ram). It usually runs Vista pretty well. Its main problems are boot and shut down, which can be terribly slow, and just occasional (very occasional) hangs where it becomes slow and unresponsive. Neither of these are caused by anything readily obvious.
Overall though, i find its more stable than XP. XP has similar problems, but Vista seems to improve on that. The visuals seem a lot smoother, even on my latops meager integrated graphics.
I recently bought a Macbook though, and so far I like it better. However, that's a preference, and it doesn't make Vista complete crap. The Mac just does what I want it to a little better. It's almost like comparing red and green apples (yes, I see the pun). I personally like green better, but that doesn't mean that red is *****. - djgreedo, on 07/25/2008, -5/+21Don't forget we're dealing with XP users here:
a) Vista is a lot easier/quicker to install than XP. No input needed from the time the install begins until you're in the OS and it's setup and working.
b) Vista's compatibility was shaky at first, but the hardware vendors are catching up. I haven't had an issue with hardware incompatibility with Vista in at least 6 monts (over several installations with different hardware).
c) As above...Vista doesn't really have much trouble with 3rd party apps.
d) OK, you haven't actually used Vista have you? This is easy to do.
e) I have not ecperience with this, but a friend of mine has it working and said it was pretty easy, but since you have never used Vista you can't be expected to know any more than me about it.
f) adding/changing hardware is easier in Vista than XP. Vista is more likely to have the hardware up and running without any user action.
g) well...networking in Vista is WAY easier than XP. I constantly had issues with XP. Vista is more 'plug and play'. I don't run any other OS on my network (unless you count a Wii, which connected with zero issues) because I only need one OS - Vista. It does everything and is compatible with all my software and hardware, and it performs nice and smoothly.
You've just proved the validity of Microsoft's experiment. You don't have any rational reason to dislike Vista. - scy1192, on 07/25/2008, -2/+17maybe that problem is overexaggerated (yes, I just said that) and UAC really isn't as intrusive as Apple's commercials would have you believe.
- bronkenwrists, on 07/25/2008, -8/+23People who bash vista should give it a real try, and not believe everything they read... I've tweaked my vista installation to the point it feels way faster than xp. I agree it's the biggest pile of bloated crap out of the box, but believe me, vista can be so much better than you think...
- microbreak, on 07/25/2008, -2/+16"The image improvement effort, known internally as FTP, has many components."
Guesses to the meaning behind FTP?
I'm hoping it stands for "***** The Press" - melonhedd, on 07/25/2008, -5/+19Don't say "lappy"
- pathy, on 07/25/2008, -0/+14How exactly did Vista break your laptop?
- Yookji, on 07/25/2008, -1/+14I got a new laptop with Vista Home Premium on it for $399. It has 2GB of RAM, a dual-core processor and an onboard video card. The only thing was, it came with a ***** of crapware on it. It was moving VERY slowly when I first booted. After removing all the crap and applying some basic windows tweaks, it runs very well and doesn't lag at all. It took ~3 hours to do all of that though...
- ferrariman60, on 07/25/2008, -2/+15Question: "New applications for all your favorite software.." wtf does that even mean? You mean I need to use my programs for different purposes now that I'm on Vista? Either you're very confused or you're an idiot.
- foxhound009, on 07/25/2008, -8/+21Vista SP1 user here... it works fine for me
no problems so far, performance (gaming) is about 3-4 % worse but it's worth the dx10 eye candy.
For non gamers there are many user friendly innovations that vista brings but a real difference between xp and vista isn't there.
- CalcProgrammer1, on 07/25/2008, -2/+14I have an HP Pavilion dv9700t. It runs Windows Vista 64 VERY well, I too used to think badly of Vista, watching it lag on my parents' Dell that they got right after Vista's release.
However, Vista is awesome on my new computer. After turning off the annoying UAC and disabling the oversecure nonsense spam, it's a very usable OS that looks great.
By the way, Realtek HD Audio works great in Vista, that's what my laptop has. - logicalnoise, on 07/25/2008, -2/+14it's from HP mystery solved.
- ry4nsm1th, on 07/25/2008, -2/+14Microsoft put out a program long before the release that would specifically point out compatibility issues before you upgraded. Your fault for not using it and saving yourself the trouble of having an issue. But as the two people above stated, no issues now.
- grumpyrain, on 07/25/2008, -2/+14Mark my words, expect change from $50 for twice that much RAM.
- ferrariman60, on 07/25/2008, -3/+15Long post is long. And inaccurate. And no, I didn't read your whole post, and no, I don't give a ***** that your friend got a macbook pro when you told them this. They probably got one just to make you stfu. Christ.
- Raian, on 07/25/2008, -5/+16Hmm does mojave run in boot camp?
- fugazied, on 07/25/2008, -4/+15Actually OS X can run on those old boxes. It doesn't require a brand new machine to work.
- CalcProgrammer1, on 07/25/2008, -2/+131GB? Come on! 640K of RAM is all that you'll ever need!
- iofthestorm, on 07/25/2008, -1/+12That's usually the best way to avoid problems. Your point is...?
