- freesf, on 01/14/2009, -13/+103I read the long article and the writer is an idiot... there is nothing relevant on the article worth reading.
- LiquidSpark, on 01/14/2009, -8/+67This article was a waste of time. 3 pages of nothing.
- Ouze, on 01/14/2009, -5/+37I've been using Windows 7 on my laptop since the beta was released. There are some things I really like, such as Windows Media player, which I traditionally hated.
The only things I really miss that I haven't gotten working are Daemon tools or an equivalent, and the quick launch bar. - stickster123, on 01/14/2009, -8/+39Wow - 72 hours - He is an expert..
@ Bit torrent comment - It is impossible to control what versions are officially released to the public. Can you imagine the PR disaster when the public starts to download a virus or something. - remotehuman, on 01/14/2009, -1/+28it's good to see someone explain why W7 is a good choice rather than either flaming it or just blurbing facts out, thank you Slurmz
- jivemasta, on 01/14/2009, -9/+34I don't think this guy understands the concept of beta. It isn't really meant to be a main OS yet. If something doesn't work in the beta, REPORT IT, that's why we have the beta. It isn't for people to review whether it has improved or not, it is to test bugs. This is also why every window has a "Send Feedback" link at the top, so you can click it and send them what the problem is easily.
- skabyss, on 01/14/2009, -5/+27Your comment would have a slim chance of being relevant if you had the slightest ***** clue as to what you are talking about.
- remotehuman, on 01/14/2009, -1/+21windows 7 needs its own category on the digg toolbar.
- mustang460, on 01/14/2009, -2/+22search "virtual clone drive" works great in windows 7
- computershack, on 01/14/2009, -2/+20There is no quick launch bar. Fire up the program you want and when the button appears on the taskbar, right click on it and select pin to taskbar from the menu. You'll then have the equivalent of a quicklaunch icon.
- WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -1/+19You don't actually *use* Windows, do you....
- XP Professional at work: I reboot my machine once every 2-3 months, IF I remember to do it. No noticeable slowdown or problems.
- Vista something-or-other on my home laptop: I reboot that one once every 2-3 weeks, and that's ONLY because I take it places once in a while. No noticeable slowdown or problems.
- Vista something-or-other on my husband's desktop at home: ye gods, I don't think he's rebooted that thing since he got it. Maybe he does it once every 6 months when I'm not looking - I don't know. It's always on. No noticeable slowdown or problems.
So... what version of Windows are YOU referring to? - biofusion, on 01/14/2009, -3/+20You can clearly tell from the first couple paragraphs of this article as to where he is heading. He was upset because he had to wait a little to download a FREE beta? That's just childish.
Honestly though, this isn't Vista 2.0 or whatever you want to call it. I've been using Windows 7 and it's far snappier, prettier, and a welcome addition to the Windows line of operating systems. The simple fact is that Vista is not a bad OS, so why should Microsoft completely change everything once again? If Microsoft did that then you'd be complaining about how none of your drivers are working and how annoying it is to get used to everything again. This is the most logical step for Microsoft.
My impression of Windows 7 is a very stable OS with some great new features and a lot of potentail. I'll be buying this thing the day it launches and yes I own Vista right now. I believe Microsoft has the right approach with this. - LemmingJesus, on 01/14/2009, -3/+19I don't think you realize how rich Microsoft really is. In fact, I should put on a monocle.
- sylv3r, on 01/14/2009, -3/+19agreed. It's like he's expecting beta to be more polished than... a BETA
- inactive, on 01/14/2009, -2/+18This guy is a friggin idiot. He's acting as if this *isn't* a beta and isn't a vast improvement over vista. Buried for idiocy.
- skabyss, on 01/14/2009, -5/+20Been using the beta for a few days now on a decent desktop system, installed it on a secondary hard disk so I can still boot back into XP if I need to. So far I love it, runs great, beautiful interface and very easy to find my way around it. Its faster too... Just go try it already.
- np0731, on 01/14/2009, -2/+15This guy's a moron. i've tried all the things he says "don't work" or "work poorly" like itunes, etc. no problems. he just wanted to attack the os because MS didn't make it the fastest download in the world
- sittingduck89, on 01/14/2009, -2/+14WINDOWS.7.FINAL.TOTALLY.LEGIT.EDITION [AXXO].torrent
- sittingduck89, on 01/14/2009, -2/+14Warning: This is not as dangerous as it actually sounds.
- dortiis, on 01/14/2009, -5/+16They've changed a lot... The fact that you can run it on a 2 ghz machine with 512 mb of ram is proof enough.
Please do not comment on things you know nothing about. - ileftfark, on 01/14/2009, -2/+13I wonder if this guy realizes that the Windows 7 EULA says that you may not disclose the results of any benchmark tests of the software to any third party without Microsoft’s prior written approval.
- insomniac8400, on 01/14/2009, -2/+13You like the dumb media is blaming bandwidth. It was actually the web server that took the hit. It wasn't robust enough to handle the influx of users trying to register to beat the 2.5 million person download limit. Basically a giant denial of service attack on their web server. Microsoft basically misunderestimated the demand. No one who was downloading it reported slow downloads, the problem is no one could get to the point where they could download it.
- y0y0howsdajell0, on 01/14/2009, -4/+15The writer is an idiot. It's a freaking beta. I've been using it on my Thinkpad from day 1, and it's great. The only thing ThinkVantage wise that doesn't work right is rescue and recovery, but that's not MS fault, it's Lenovo's. ESRI ArcMap has a few issues, but I'm not sure if that's because it's 9.2 or Windows 7. Honestly, this writer when in with a bad attitude intending to slam Windows 7.
- datdamonfoo, on 01/14/2009, -1/+12I want to punch you in the face for your smugness. I can keep my Vista-running computer up for months at a time with heavy usage.
- fiverock2, on 01/14/2009, -1/+12Then you would be dead wrong, fanboi.
- insomniac8400, on 01/14/2009, -0/+10He definitely does not. He doesn't get this will not have all the features of the retail copy. Microsoft most likely has a few things they purposely did not want to release yet or they decided weren't complete enough to be released yet. And then the whole purpose is to get feedback as to what needs to change or what needs to be added.
And as to his application issues, he didn't even try the compatibility settings. So any problems he had with apps were probably things he could have gotten around by checking a box. - raddreamer, on 01/14/2009, -1/+11I stopped reading once he said W7 is Vista SP2, can we stop with this "Windows 7 is Vista SP2" garbage already?! Go do your homework on what a service pack is.
- Hyunk, on 01/14/2009, -0/+9@gweedo767: Middle Click on the button on the taskbar.
- i4mt3hwin, on 01/14/2009, -1/+10I've been running the beta as a main OS for about three weeks now - I formatted once to install the X64 build. So far it's been excellent. I don't know if I'm just lucky or what but I haven't had a single BSOD or application crash yet. I do feel that the taskbar wasn't all properly thought out - its hard at first glance to see which applications are running and which are just pinned. I also feel like jump lists are a bit of a hidden feature and submitted bug reports on how I think they could improve both.
Maybe it is a little bit of a SP to Vista but if priced right I don't mind paying for it - I don't see the difference between this and all the MAC OSX expansions. Vista was fine for me and I think anyone who used it the past couple of years would agree that it's a solid OS. - Zippo, on 01/14/2009, -6/+15Why Microsoft doesn't distribute large beta products such as Windows 7 over bittorrent is beyond me. It's as if they -want- to waste their bandwidth and make the product harder/slower to download.
- mattbrad2, on 01/14/2009, -1/+10Sorry, but saying Windows 7 should be called Vista SP2 is rather lame not to mention extremely ignorant. If this is Vista SP2, then Vista should be Windows XP SP4 or better yet, Windows XP should have been Windows 2000 SP2. Actually that is a very fare asesment considering XP is primarily using the Windows 2k core.
Personally, I see an OS that smokes its predecesser in virtually every area and has enough visual differences to warrant a name change. Lets just treat Vista like Windows ME and pretend it never existed. - M4tchstickM4n, on 01/14/2009, -2/+11My Win2K OS would go for a month without needing to be restarted. The only time I would reset my pc was if an update required it. If it wasn`t for the fact that I play games I would still be using WIn2K, it was a fantastic OS.
- BigPapi, on 01/14/2009, -1/+10He makes it sound like he's going to scale Everest. All he's doing is using a new OS that's slightly different from the one he currently runs. Whoop-dy-*****-do.
- homercles337, on 01/14/2009, -6/+15Buried. This is just another "bash windows" piece. Likely paid for by the Church of Apple.
- nkassi, on 01/14/2009, -0/+9dragging it from the start menu also does this.
- inactive, on 01/14/2009, -1/+9Protip: No one cares about the EULA.
- pdileepa, on 01/14/2009, -0/+8Idiot. For a beta, Windows 7 works great! I haven't had a single BSOD (not implying I won't or others haven't). Have had a couple of app compatibility issues which I've reported. Of course, there are lots of bugs -- it's a beta. Report them! Don't complain just for the sake of it.
- lowtolerance, on 01/14/2009, -0/+8Do I really have to say it? I mean,we both know that's how I feel...it's just really hard for me to express those kind of things.
- fragsta, on 01/14/2009, -0/+7For me: Only reason for a restart, usually, on either XP or Vista? Update. I know plenty of people who'd say the same.
- Y0tsuya, on 01/14/2009, -0/+7My Win2K3 server reboots only when I instruct it to, usually once every few months when I do routine hardware upgrades. I think it once went for 9 months before I decided to take it offline to add some RAM.
- artfuldodga, on 01/14/2009, -1/+8nothing like a little Microsoft bashing at the start of the article, guess he had to get that out of the way? no matter how trivial...
editors, authors, most reviewers these days are just plain moronic
article offers up nothin we didn't already know before the beta was released, buried as lame
and apparently doesn't know some features hes reviewing already exist in Vista, like its advanced firewall with inbound outbound control, WTF. - awitod, on 01/14/2009, -2/+9Buried. I hope the author didn't get paid for that piece of crap.
- angers, on 01/14/2009, -0/+7@gweedo767: You can also shift + left click.
- Finalreminder, on 01/14/2009, -0/+6My god, no-one's mentioned the L word yet!
- inactive, on 01/14/2009, -5/+11So are you planning to ditch Mac hardware in the future? I don't see the point of buying overpriced hardware just for the sole reason of running Windows on it.
- arkanebeats, on 01/14/2009, -0/+6So let me get this straight: the author truly believes that Microsoft should have kept the Vista name and all the negative associations/perceptions that come with it? That's ridiculous. You are dooming your product immediately in the eyes of the public just by association with Vista in the name. Criticizing the background choices? Not being able to run iTunes? This article reaks of pettiness.
- Ouze, on 01/14/2009, -0/+6Lot of neat tips in this thread.
- smackjack, on 01/14/2009, -2/+8If Microsoft where to release something like this over bittorent, there would be a legion of others uploading their "modified" copies of windows 7 and it would just get lost in virus land.
