- Rockkybox, on 10/26/2009, -0/+149Ctrl+Shift+N: Creates a new folder in Windows Explorer.
Why did it take so long???? - Speedy7, on 10/26/2009, -2/+139Windows 7
+1 - trashymac, on 10/26/2009, -8/+100Soooo tempted to finally upgrade from XP.
- datdamonfoo, on 10/26/2009, -1/+69Aero Shake separates the men from the boys.
- ortucis, on 10/26/2009, -3/+71The biggest question is, why the ***** does Ctrl+N open a new explorer window? It should default to New Folder and Ctrl+Shift should be for new window.
We need "short" shortcuts for most common actions.
Even better, give us a GLOBAL WINDOWS SHORTCUT manager in Control Panel. Let us change shortcuts for different apps like Photoshop. Everyone will be happy. I know there is a way to change all this stuff but there should be one easily available and in-built from MS. - Iwantawii, on 10/26/2009, -0/+46It would be nice if Win+Space would allow clicking/dragging of desktop icons beneath the transparent windows. Then one could drag the icons onto applications in the taskbar or desktop.
- TheHIV, on 10/26/2009, -0/+45Coming from an AV guy, Win + P will possibly be the most useful of all of those shortcuts. Having that shortcut based on the OS instead of the computer manufacturer will be so nice.
- ProfessorLX, on 10/26/2009, -1/+40do it, i did it saturday and after a couple hours of getting acquainted, i love it! it looks and acts sooooooo smoothly.. and i came straight from xp never tried vista, i had no problems at all, didnt have to install any drivers, everything worked right away and have had no compatibility issues whatsoever yet.
- briLo, on 10/26/2009, -1/+31do it.
- ortucis, on 10/26/2009, -0/+26Undo
- HeavyWave, on 10/27/2009, -1/+25= Windows 8?
- evildemonic, on 10/26/2009, -0/+22I wish I could digg you up more than once. This is one of my biggest frustrations with my OS...LET ME MAKE MY OWN EFFECTIVE SHORTCUTS, ITS TWO_THOUSAND_FREAKING_NINE. I swear, Windows 3.1 had a better shortcut/hotkey implementation.
- coopa, on 10/26/2009, -1/+20Ctrl-Z
- neomatrix724, on 10/26/2009, -5/+24Best one thus far is Windows Key -> Start Typing Program name.
Huge timesaver for me to hit Win Key -> fi -> Enter to bring up firefox. Among other apps. - tiberone, on 10/27/2009, -0/+18i am so confused, hasn't this been around for like 3 years now?? :-\
- coopa, on 10/26/2009, -0/+17I still remember when games /didn't/ do that and hitting the dreaded Win key would dump you back to the desktop and crash your game.
- bullsfan03, on 10/27/2009, -1/+16Win + Tab still amuses me for hours
- Atario, on 10/27/2009, -1/+14"NEW Windows 7 Shortcuts"
Vista did that. - gren99, on 10/26/2009, -1/+14hmm. right-click, select 'pin to taskbar' seems pretty straightforward and easy to me.
you can't pin folders, but if you drag them onto the taskbar, they'll be in your explorer jumplist, which (imo) is actually far more practical - malechite, on 10/26/2009, -0/+13I've used keyboard shortcuts and the windows key forever, Win+R, Win+E, WIN+L, Win+D, and Win+Pause... I was always so frustrated that they put the key on keyboards since windows 95, and never used it for anything useful. (i know in the past you could use 3rd part apps to enable it to do more, or disable it completely for gaming)
I'm glad with Windows 7 they finally expanded on the usefulness of the key, it looks like just with the arrow keys you can do so much more with window management. - drouk1556, on 10/26/2009, -0/+11It's the same as OS X's exposé feature that shows the desktop. When I'm doing anything that requires dragging and dropping files (like Photoshop, for instance), I use the desktop as a temporary visual folder and get all my files from there.
I think Win+Space would be useful in that capacity at the very least. - poponegra, on 10/27/2009, -0/+11It would be cool if windows explorer implemented tabs.
- wehrmanweb, on 10/26/2009, -1/+11"-cannot easily pin shortcuts to the task bar. (but this is why I have Launchy)"
Can't you just open the application and when it's on the taskbar right click the icon and "Pin this program to taskbar"? - addiktion, on 10/27/2009, -1/+11It's been around since the Vista days. People just didn't use it as much or didn't use Vista. Vista was only buggy initially but it's been solid and it's a key I use frequently.
- sageerrant, on 10/27/2009, -0/+10No one cares.
- malechite, on 10/26/2009, -0/+9Yep, that was a nice feature on my Logitech G15 was the hardware switch that disabled the key... Although I would always forget to turn it back on...the best was ihatethiskey.exe which only disabled it in full-screen directx/opengl ... which was perfect.
- TrevorBradley, on 10/26/2009, -1/+10The windows shake thing to minimise other windows doesn't seem to work.
EDIT: I get it now. Wow, that's a lot more violent than I thought it should be. - screwkevin, on 10/26/2009, -3/+11Every Windows 7 review mostly talks about new ways to switch between applications and finding your way around the desktop. Am I the only one who never had a problem finding a right window since like Windows 3.1?
- Arramol, on 10/26/2009, -0/+8Do it. I've been running the RC on an old laptop with a single-core CPU and 512mb of RAM. It doesn't do the fancy Aero stuff, but it does everything XP does and then some - the jump lists in particular have turned out way handier than I thought they would.
- DarkShroud, on 10/27/2009, -0/+8How would it, OSX can't run on non certified hardware.
- ihavefrowned, on 10/26/2009, -0/+8I always found the Alt-F-W-F sequence to be just as easy. I've been so used to it over the years, that I'll probably never use Ctrl+Shift+N.
- drouk1556, on 10/26/2009, -0/+7Well you're right that it wouldn't necessarily be useful for everyone always, but in select instances or workflow setups, it probably would be.
- wpf999, on 10/26/2009, -0/+7Just do it without looking back. Win 7 = cool beans!
- wpf999, on 10/26/2009, -1/+8Aero shake turns a geek into Chuck Norris.
- xtremesniper, on 10/26/2009, -0/+6Finally. Now I have one less thing to complain about Windows. I've always felt that the keyboard shortcuts were lacking when coming back from OS X to use Windows. I'm gonna have to get used to these.
- ProfessorLX, on 10/26/2009, -0/+6my copy did that automatically, made a windows.old folder with the contents of c:\ in it.
- 1rage, on 10/27/2009, -0/+6That probably means Aero is disabled.
- Digilante, on 10/27/2009, -0/+6They left my favorite one out of the "taskbar tricks" section:
Middle-click on a taskbar icon to open a new instance of that app.
Very handy for new browser or explorer windows. - Truth3, on 10/27/2009, -0/+6One of the coolest things I've seen (I never had Vista so I'm not sure if it happened then) is when I installed Windows 7, my internet connection was instantly working. I didn't do a thing. On XP I had to find modem drivers from Comcast and all that BS. That was refreshing to see. Go Windows 7!
- fafafafred, on 10/27/2009, -1/+6Coz you're a dumbass
- Gizza, on 10/27/2009, -0/+5Really? Have you seriously not tried dragging and dropping the shortcut onto the taskbar? Isn't this the first thing someone would try? Go on, do it, it works, trust me.
- mrcslws, on 10/27/2009, -2/+7I disagree, Ctrl+n should definitely open a new window so that it's consistent with all of the web browsers.
- compacho, on 10/26/2009, -1/+6Doesn't Win + P do that?
- sageerrant, on 10/27/2009, -1/+6No, we're not. Some people never tried Vista.
- CocodaMonkey, on 10/26/2009, -0/+5It works fine but it only works on the primary monitor. MS is still way behind in offering support for multi display.
- TheHerk, on 10/27/2009, -0/+4zing
- x9990, on 10/26/2009, -4/+8The one thing that I hate about shortcuts is when you accidentally invoke one that you didn't know about when trying to do something else. Sometimes, it can take a long time to figure out how to "undue" an unknown and unwanted shortcut command.
- sageerrant, on 10/27/2009, -0/+4Oh, wow. I haven't even used that since I switched from Vista to the first public beta.
Alt + Tab works well enough to make it useless, but it's fun to see the little bit of 3D that made it through, especially after some of the concept UIs floating around. - huntermaclean, on 10/26/2009, -2/+6My bad, that is a little ambiguous. Some shortcuts Windows doesn't like, such as those to documents or spreadsheets in my case. I don't understand why users can't "pin anything" to the taskbar without having to go through a 10 step process: http://windows7center.com/tutorials/how-to-pin-any ...
- soopafly, on 10/27/2009, -2/+6You guys are JUST getting this?? LOL
