- inactive, on 03/30/2009, -8/+72Ya MS naming sucks but macs are getting a little annoying too with the whole "i" thing.
- drrlvn, on 03/30/2009, -0/+38In Hebrew Zune means "*****".
- BurtCokain, on 03/30/2009, -0/+34Ah, good, but they forgot that initial version of Windows/Microsoft Update - the Critical Update Notification Tool in Windows 98, which was quite rapidly renamed to the Critical Update Notification Utility...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Update#Critic ...
A wonderful acronym for all the family. - GalacticRerun, on 03/30/2009, -1/+30It wouldn't be as annoying if every third party company was naming their ***** i-something all the time.
- Knowa22, on 03/30/2009, -1/+25Anyone else notice that the very name "Microsoft" is kinda wimpy.
I mean "Megahard" or "Macro-stiff" might be a step too far in the other direction, but still.... - SoundJudgment, on 03/30/2009, -0/+21"Syfy."
Oh...wait, wrong Network. - MacParrot, on 03/30/2009, -0/+19Well I didn't until NOW...thanks
Now all I see is some frustrated kid giving rasberries to every passer-by - EMFK, on 03/30/2009, -2/+21A mind is a terrible thing to waste. Rest yours and come back to comment when you can write something more coherent.
- shutaro, on 03/30/2009, -1/+19Well, they were originally gonna call it Microsoft Billy Bob.
- Jektal, on 03/30/2009, -7/+25In English, iPod means "I should have bought a Sansa, but I base my purchasing decisions solely on advertising."
- mastermrt, on 03/30/2009, -2/+18Yeah, that is one of the worst written web pages I've seen in a while. On my machine most of the headings were obscured by the pictures.
Fail... - Knowa22, on 03/30/2009, -1/+16Windows XP
Am I the only one that just sees an emoticon after the word Windows, rather than an acronym?
(snicker) - strictnein, on 03/30/2009, -0/+14Xbox is the name. No hyphen.
- inactive, on 03/30/2009, -0/+14Article by "Harry McCracken"... nice name buddy.
- inactive, on 03/30/2009, -6/+19MS suck at naming stuff. 'Nuff said.
- Jektal, on 03/30/2009, -1/+14Xbox was a decent name. Xbox 360 was a dumb name.
"Going/went full circle" means you end up where you started, without making any progress. Like going around in circles. - woody1987, on 03/30/2009, -1/+13Those are CODE names for ubuntu distributions. The actual names are ubuntu 8.10 ubuntu 9.04 etc
- FearlessFreep, on 03/30/2009, -0/+12Yeah, like iGoogle....
- GlassAgate, on 03/30/2009, -7/+19Good info, but the information is horribly organized.
- Metalcard, on 03/30/2009, -0/+11You did realize it linked to the Printable version of the article, yes? That way you didn't have to click through 4 pages probably filled with ads, and a very small column containing the the actual text.
Here's the link to the article: http://www.pcworld.com/article/161618/the_10_worst ... - inactive, on 03/30/2009, -2/+13I always thought the "i" thing sounded kind of selfish. It always makes me think of a spoiled 6 year old girl.
- mason092, on 03/30/2009, -10/+20In English, deadapostle means "I am a giant douche who blindly bashes MS and follows Apple."
- Chrysalii, on 03/30/2009, -1/+11yet no one thinks about that when saying Windows.
How many people here even think of a pane of glass put in to a wall when someone says Windows?
Windows is a damn good name, despite it's genericness. - Khanvalescent, on 03/30/2009, -0/+10In iPod, English means pages 1-4 of the manual.
- AzzX, on 03/30/2009, -1/+10His real name is Phil - Thats just his writers name.
- Azathothh, on 03/30/2009, -2/+11all Ubuntu's names and Gimp
- mrBitch, on 03/30/2009, -2/+11Everyone forgets about how badly the MS Origami concept failed. Even more interesting is that the iPhone and the iPod Touch are actually the first successful Origami based devices.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11732808/
" ... March 9, 2006 :
HANOVER, Germany - Microsoft Corp. finally took the wraps off its mysterious Project Origami on Thursday, unveiling a computer that’s about the size of a large paperback book ...
... The ultracompact, wireless-enabled PC is everything a full computer or laptop is, minus the keyboard. Weighing about 2 1/2 pounds, the 1-inch thick device sports a 7-inch touch-sensitive screen that responds to a stylus or the tap of a finger." - mrBitch, on 03/30/2009, -3/+11You mean, it was more embarrassing than Microsoft deciding to rename WinCE to Windows Mobile? And then more embarassing for MS to then split WinMo into THREE Windows Mobile variants?
1. Windows Mobile Classic,
2. Windows Mobile Professional, and
3. Windows Mobile Standard.
More embarassing than that? - deadapostle, on 03/30/2009, -2/+10And what's the deal with airline food?
- miker71, on 03/30/2009, -6/+14getting annoying? at least it's been consistent since Jobs time as iCEO which must have been over a decade ago.
- Myztry, on 03/30/2009, -0/+8It's actually one of the smart moves Microsoft has made in the last 20 years.
It will allow them to target new architectures. It would even allow them to bring along the entire .NET software catalog onto a new Operating System when Windows eventually paints itself into a corner it can't get out of. All they need to do it port the runtime. - WoollyMittens, on 03/30/2009, -1/+9I want to burn a CD, maybe I should try SLORN, because the icon looks like a banana goal keeper drawn by a 4 year old.
- doshindude, on 03/30/2009, -1/+9It was originally to be called DirectXbox. It was truncated.
I like the name anyway, there's no problem with it. - uberduger, on 03/30/2009, -0/+7It was probably the only thing they could think of that began with a 3. Apparently it's quite a big thing, psychologically, for an uninformed person (read: moron) buying a console. If they had to choose between a '[Games Console] 3' and a '[Other Games Console] 2', they'd be like: 'woah, gotta go with the 3, since 3>2 so it's better'.
- inc595, on 03/30/2009, -3/+10With is billion distros out there you need to be creative
- brim4brim, on 03/30/2009, -1/+7Messenger is pleasant when you first see it, that pleasant feeling soon goes away when you try to use it.
Google talk is pleasantly clean looking when you install it and it is pleasant to use because it is clean looking and easy to navigate.
Same reason Mac products are seen as good really. Less is more when it comes to design. Hell even Digg is pretty much like that and you are all looking at it instead of the other sites that could offer the same features. Ms needs to get proper designers. - mrBitch, on 03/30/2009, -0/+6Actually, it was a toss up between "MS Billy Bob" and "MS Jim Bob".
- punkcat, on 03/30/2009, -0/+6WAIT, they just added internet connectivity so...
1. Windows Mobile Classic Live
2. Windows Mobile Professional Live
3. Windows Mobile Standard Live - UnnDunn, on 03/30/2009, -0/+6"Games For Windows--LIVE"
- Jektal, on 03/30/2009, -0/+6...Macintosh? You're saying that the Apple Macintosh is named after the Mack truck company, and not the actual edible mackintosh apple?
And back on the Microsoft topic; yeah, the name is kind of wimpy when you look at it that way, but remember the context of back when Windows 1.0 came out. The name denoted a software company for microcomputers. Trendy ***** back in 1975. - virtualmode, on 03/30/2009, -3/+9.NET is actually one of the best Microsoft products, just don't take the old marketing too seriously and see the real product (framework, programming languages, ASP.NET, development tools) instead. The name could be more unique to make googling easier.
- HonoredMule, on 03/30/2009, -0/+6And most of the names given in the article are /actual/ product names (i.e. published and proliferated by the marketing department of a commercial entity as the name intended to be publicly recognized and used when the product is finished and released). If we want to start complaining about code names, what about Longhorn, Janus, Hydra, Asteroid, Whistler, Mojave, Lone Star...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_codenames - philkav, on 03/30/2009, -0/+6Few Upgrades Guys, stop living in the past
1. Windows Mobile Classic Live Service Pack 2
2. Windows Mobile Professional Live Service Pack 2
3. Windows Mobile Standard Live Service Pack 2 - embryoinbloom, on 03/30/2009, -2/+7While your engrish is retarded at best, the page does look better in an IE tab.
- caseycoold, on 03/30/2009, -1/+6That's all fine and dandy, but some of these names were never really used. HailStorm was cancled. That's like saying "Your rough draft was really crappy, so we are firing you."
- sea206town, on 03/30/2009, -3/+8Maybe this guy should have used Word 6.0.
"In the mid-1990s, critics accused Microsoft was accused by many of being slow to jump on the Internet bandwagon" - inactive, on 03/30/2009, -0/+5Maybe he could just call himself Phil McHarryCracken.
- adml_shake, on 03/30/2009, -2/+7I would have put Origami on that list too.
- Amezis, on 03/30/2009, -0/+5Well, one of its main competitors is named after a fruit...
- dead3ye, on 03/30/2009, -6/+11Would it kill the author to use some headings and subheadings?
Pics for each?
