It's been on the market for 6 months.
If the Zune failed, then you have to admit that:
OSX has failed - 5% to Windows 95%
Macintosh has failed - 5% compaired to other PC makers
AppleTV has failed - didnt cause a dent in sales of TiVos, Slingboxes, or MCE - Dragular, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15While I'm sure there was an attempt at something resembling a coherent statement there, it fell flat. Plus, your use of "m$" makes me want to punch you.
Of COURSE Microsoft is copying other people. I mean, we all know that Apple was the first company to come out with an Mp3 Player, right? Oh and the Apple TV... CLEARLY Apple was the first company to come up with the idea of plugging an old computer into a television set! Clearly!
Oh and let's not forget Apple's other inventions! Like... fire! That's right kids, Steve Jobs invented fire, right before he created the wheel. The marketing campaign was "Roll Different." It was great. - Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Welcome to the social!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+18Wow, lots of Apple fanboys in this thread.
Wouldn't Windows Mobile constitute as being on phones already? I doubt MS would put out their own phone especially after Ballmer LOLed at the iPhone.
Personally, I am never paying over $200 for a cell phone so whatever floats your boat. - wageslaven, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Uhm, thats 97% and 3% Apple.

"The fankids know that a 600.00 cellphone isnt going to go anywhere. Blackberry only has 1,000,000 subscribers, and thats with a device that actually is used for serious work, not as a fashion accessory"
Yes, but unfortunately for RIM, Blackberries don't appeal as well to the spoiled kids market. One device is a business device, the other is a consumer device. I'd say your point suffers a bit from "apples-to-oranges" syndrome.
Cingular has over a million people signed up just for notifications about the iPhone, and I guarantee not everyone that buys one will have been on the list. Not to mention the fact that Apple has struck a deal with Cingular that other phone manufacturers don't get, a cut of the subscription. To be skeptical is understandable, but to say so assuredly that it won't go anywhere seems silly.
I mean I've heard people say all along how the iPod is ridiculously priced, how its nothing special, how it'll fail, and seen post after post on forums of various degrees of geekery denounce it and it didn't seem to hurt its sales one bit. - cleverhanz, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14Ballmer and Zune in the same headline. Naptime.
- wageslaven, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7r3mix
Another example of how they are one step behind Apple in the consumer iPod/iPhone market.
Are you a ***** idiot? MS has been shipping Windows equiped Smartphones since 1998. I dont have a guess how many units that would be, but let me tell you, my 7 year old smartphone played movies and mp3s. - mlock2k, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10apple people are just too militant it seems can we not just co exist ?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"but this of course doesn't rule out a phone with Zune functionality"
Was this put in there just to keep the rumor wheel spinning? - jonnyq, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6iphone is important because there are a lot of apple fans that ejaculate over the thought of having a phone with an apple logo on it and not because it offers something new (or at least, something new that won't be on every other new phone within a month)
zune phone is not important because there's no one that getting off on having a phone with "Microsoft" on it, except for maybe people that already have phones with windows mobile. This is completely irrelevant. - DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Um, even Engadget quoted it at $600.00."
Where? I cannot find that supposed Engadget quote, and even if they did say that, it doesn't make it right. Apple said it's gonna be $499 for the 4GB model. http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2007/01/09iphone.html
"Maybe the concept of taxes and contracts dont exist in the land of Jobs, but outside the RDF they are very real."
When people (like you) talk about iPhone competitors (and just about any products really), they don't include taxes and other expenses, they quote the bare entry price. - tugger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Whats a zune?
- treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Microsoft will create a Zune phone when/if they see the iPhone become successful.
It's cheaper for MS to simply copy other successful products than try and innovate or be first movers. - flag564, on 10/12/2007, -10/+13@superkendall
Apple's Computers and OS, have FAILED to obtain a majority, or even 6%, of the market in their respective categories, even though they have on the market for years. While the Zune, after about 5 months on the market, obtains about 10% and is labeled a failure by Apple fans. Apple TV does not have lines of people waiting to purchase one and has little interest (You know, the same line that was used by Apple fans to bash the Zune), but Apple fans arent going to label the AppleTV a failure because of this.
Dont set standards for one side and then not apply them to the Apple side too. - sputza, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Microsoft needs to walk before running. Get a semi-popular MP3 player, then make a crossover device like a MP3/phone.
- briLo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You mean to tell me there's still a feud by these fanboi ***** about MS ripping the mp3 player off from Apple??
Company A makes a product.
Company B makes a similar product and announces they've revolutionized they way users will use product and there's no mention of any copy-cats from Company A (nor do company A users cry)
Company C,D,E,F,G,H,I,J make a similar product and there's no mention of copy-cat still...
Company K makes a similar product as A through J and all you hear is copy-cat this and that!!
Amorn- I'd buy a zune phone as I know it will integrate extremely well at work, and at home. Bud I'd also take two cans and a string over the iPhone in a second as I attempt to not be a ***** yuppie unoriginal piece of pretentious *****! That's just me though, you may want to be one.
Why is it you can buy 15 different types of bread? Baseball bats? Grills? Lawn chairs? When someone makes a device that captures a large market share, competitors attempt to take that market share away with similar products. Come on Fanboi's!!!! You should know this as you've been doing it in the Personal Computer market for many years now!!!!!!
my2cents - wageslaven, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Why rumour mill. Windows Mobile 6 does all your multi media playing. It does network-agnostic streaming from your PC AT HOME. It runs Windows Media Extender.
Also, for fun, its a Windows SideShow device too... so you can display gadgets running on your PC. Also, network agnostic.
A cellphone that plays music and video files? Who cares! Its not the year 2000. - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"Another example of how they are one step behind Apple in the consumer iPod/iPhone market."
My two year old WM5 phone (Samsung SCH-i730) not only plays MP3s and videos, it's got a 4GB SD card in it, it streams my TV and DVR from my Slingbox via 3G, it streams all my media files from my home computer, I can add whatever 3rd party media codecs I like, I have my choice of thousands of games and applications, after a few hours of watching video I can replace the battery rather than staring at a dead phone, and it's currently available for $100 with a two year contract from Verizon.
How is it that Microsoft is behind Apple again? - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Microsoft didn't just make an MP3 player, they made an iPod clone with a similar size, shape and interface. Then, they packeged it in an almost idential box to the one Apple used. Obviously neither one of them invented the Mp3 player but that isn't the focus."
Similar size: They test marketed a refrigerator sized MP3 player, but it didn't go over well. MP3 players are designed to be as small as possible, given hardware constraints. All hard drive based MP3 players are going to be of similar heft. The Zune is actually noticably bigger than the iPod.
Similar shape: Stellated dodecahedrons leave an embarrasing bulge in your pocket. I'm surprised even a rabbid fanboy can think Apple has the rectangle patented.
Similar interface: Yes, they both have a screen and buttons and, um...??? WTF?
Almost identical box: Indeed, they are both black and box shaped. Damning evidence indeed.
"Ferarri and Chevy didn't invent the car either but you can bet if Chevy released a Ferarri clone the lawyers would go *****. Copying does not just refer to the original idea."
The Zune is far from an iPod clone. Of course, you'd claim a Corvette is a Ferrari clone because they both are a similar size, shape, have a similar interface, and use the same gas. You have absolutely no clue what you're talking about. - xtmno3, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Zune phone:

(comical idea even if they are annoying as hell) - sizzzzlerz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Oh, good. Something else I'll never buy.
- sailorj, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9People will buy an iPhone for a few reasons: (This is after the initial onslaught of people buy in)
If it has:
-Excellent Email Support
-Visual Voice mail well implemented
-Decent battery-life
-Good Coverage.
-WiFi working flawlessly (Internet without using the AT&T network)
-Additional Software support (Ability to load it up)
-Great user experience.
I know I've heard people saying they want the WiFi Internet device and screw the phone. I've heard people that just want a wide screen iPod. Apple though is making a case for a convergence device that people might actually use. Right now we may be skeptical, but if it is as easy as they say, it could quickly catch on. Seriously, my guess is that most of the readers on here are pretty tech savvy folks. When we step into the "Real World" we find that most people can barely unlock their car with a key fob. So after you all go out and rent that copy of Idiocracy, you'll quickly come to the conclusion that all people really want is a stupid Staples EASY button, al a iPhone. - Haohmaru, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Wow, look at the comment ratings here. The Zune seems to bring out the worst in everyone.
- hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2have fun with windows mobile. it cripples the treo's phone functionality. i dont know how many times that thing freezes up on me. piece of *****.
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2who said MS ripped off the mp3 player from Apple?
Christ if they had really done a good job of copying the iPod, the Zune might actually SELL. - Amorn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4hahah who would want that piece of garbage
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Yes, I have a company Treo which I use to retrieve email and check on updates in our intranet, plus to communicate and use internet (albeit sparely). It works very well in that respect. I can send mp3s or files to it via infrared, or to my email, or PC transfer, or with an SD card. It's for businesses. I wouldn't want a phone as a fashion accessory, which is why I crack up when I see a Choclate or some other variant.
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I get visual voicemail for free on my Windows Mobile phone by using the (free for basic use) CallWave service. Kudos to Apple for bullying AT&T into supporting it directly, but it's not exactly an innovative feature. I even get my voicemails from my home line in similar fashion from my VOIP provider.
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -9/+9
The fankids know that a 600.00 cellphone isnt going to go anywhere. Blackberry only has 1,000,000 subscribers, and thats with a device that actually is used for serious work, not as a fashion accessory - clyde2801, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Don't you mean 'dozens'?
- Hale, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'd take the iphone over the cans and string, but only so I could sell it and buy a car or two.
- MicheBel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I'm sorry. I'm having difficulty typing, I'm laughing so hard.
- wageslaven, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"except for maybe people that already have phones with windows mobile" like the tens of millions who see a IPhone and think "whats the deal, ive been able to do all of this for 5 years, meh"?
No its not "important", like saving the whales is "important" -- what is worthwhile is to watch the apple-reality-distortion in effect wiggling around trying to maintain a fictional reality. Its a wonderful display of the triumph of modern emotion-based advertising, marketing and branding.
Read No Logo by Naomi Klein to understand why apple fans are amusing. - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Incidentally here's another music player that according to you must have copied the iPod because it comes in multiple colors and has a similar size, shape, and even has a scroll wheel interface. Don't let the fact that it was released in 1954 put a damper on your theory. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/4265374.stm

Stop being such a damn fascist. You dont like what I have to say? Fine. Grow a pair and get on with your life.
If you are looking for an echo chamber, then go find some fansite. - sremick, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9Hey Microsoft... why don't you use some of that $7 BILLION you spend on R&D and... you know... actually innovate something? If we really wanted cheap low-quality knock-offs of others' successful products, we already have China and their US outlet, WalMart.
- wageslaven, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Windows Mobile 6 does everything you want from an MP3 playing phone.
It does it today. IMHO, the Zune phone is a good idea (Could we please get a Zune + Phone + XBox XNA-runtime, m'kay thanks).
Want a smart phone? take a look at this: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/default.mspx
Why is digg pretending to be willfully ignorant? As described, regardless of price, the iphone is a stillborn device. Totally uncompelling except (in some circles I guess) the $600 "ive got more money than brains" hipster/fashion cache. Personally, I dont like burning money. - aristotle0dude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+195% versus 5% of what market? Marketshare of the total market? What the hell does that mean to the average home user? Nothing. What does that percentage mean to the average independent developer? No a whole lot.
I think it is totally mental to group large corporate upgrade role outs for office drones and POS installations with home and professional users.
First of all, not only are those first two groups almost never going to run the same software (other than MS Office for corporate desktops) but you are going to see a lot more diversity in terms of the types of apps people run as professionals and home users.
We really need to get away from lumping everything into one pile and get away from percentages as they really are pretty meaningless. - flag564, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8"flag564 :

Trivial? Wow, now I know you're full of *****. Being able to see your messages and respond to them in order of importance is quite possibly the most useful feature for a phone ever. You can't imagine a situation where an important message is buried behind ten less important ones? - mypenis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Wow. The haters are out today!

"Apple needs to walk before running. Get a semi-popular phone, them make a crossover device like a MP3/phone. See the flaw in your logic now?"
-----------------------------------
There is nothing flawed with the logic. It is based on Microsoft fairly closely following the iPod business model with the Zune now that Plays4sure is DOA. - mypenis, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7Hey Microsoft PR.
Don't forget to add the redundant marketing!
Here's how I recommend:
Window Mobile Zune Live: Ulimate 360 Edition
Any others want to come up with a slick name?
Release the haters!! :-) - flag564, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8It's a 600.00 cellphone. People do not buy 600.00 cell phones or the heck of it.
"you'll quickly come to the conclusion that all people really want is a stupid Staples EASY button, al a iPhone."
So the new line is to say that people are so dumb that they will buy an iPhone because it is designed for dumb people? - mouthIfoam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Except in Nebraska"
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The comment says Microsoft should not make an MP3 player/phone because they don't have a very successful MP3 player, but completely ignores the fact that Apple has no experience making phones whatsoever. In fact I would say creating a mobile phone OS--an area Microsoft has a tremendous amount of experience in--is far more complicated and difficult than creating a decent MP3 player. In fact my Windows Mobile phone is already a great convergence device, which makes the parent comment all the more ridiculous.

What is Digg?
