- fragMasterFlash, on 07/06/2009, -2/+109I know of no better tool than IE when it comes to downloading and installing Firefox on a virgin windows box.
- GelfTheElf, on 07/06/2009, -4/+88Maybe people aren't as into puking as Microsoft thinks?
- ghostrc, on 07/06/2009, -2/+80Is it still possible to surf the web with the Dreamcast browser?
- gdo01, on 07/06/2009, -1/+73March
IE 6.0 = 14.37%
IE 7.0 = 49.11%
IE 8.0 = 2.27%
IE Total = 65.75%
July
IE 6.0 = 8.9%
IE 7.0 = 30.78%
IE 8.0 = 15.33%
IE Total = 55.01%
Now tell me how IE didn't lose around 11% of the market share? - bjf0001, on 07/06/2009, -9/+75internet exploder
- asadotzler, on 07/05/2009, -4/+57Better graphic here: http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/asa/archives/2009/0 ...
Longer term trends here: http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/asa/archives/2009/0 ...
Whether or not the StatsCounter data is accurate, the longterm trend is clear. I don't think that IE's lost 10 points in the last 6 months, probably more like 10 points in the last year and a half, but it's still good news.
Even better news is that IE 6's decline is really really steady and not only was it just surpassed by IE 8, but it's likely to fall under 10% by the end of the year. - asadotzler, on 07/05/2009, -2/+52We had "everyone on one rendering engine" from about 2001 until 2004. That wasn't a good time for browsers. Monoculture is very dangerous and the wildfire-like spread of spyware, worms, and other malicious software over the Internet during 2001-2004 was proof of that.
Better than one rendering engine is several rendering engines competing on standards support, performance, an security. If that works well, as it is now, you get rapid and secure evolution of the Web platform.
(And considering that Firefox has about a quarter of Web usage and Webkit based browsers have about one tenth of Web usage, if you were going to suggest everyone adopting one "modern" rendering engine, it seems like Gecko would be a better choice -- especially if you appreciate the plug-in architecture which isn't possible with the other browser stacks that don't use the rendering engine itself to display the browser UI.) - jeffgtr, on 07/06/2009, -1/+49If IE was standards compliant I wouldn't hate it as much, but it isn't so it remains on top of the hate pile. It can't die fast enough.
- TheInformer, on 07/06/2009, -1/+49Back when Netscape Navigator was being sold so that it could pay its bills, Microsoft released IE for free with the expressed purpose of killing Netscape off. The computer magazines of the time fell in lock step and promoted IE to the hilt, without pointing out the whole picture. It's hard to compete with something being given away for free, so Netscape shriveled away. One of Netscape's final acts was to release their source code under the GPL so that others could carry on their work. Thus was Firefox born.
Funny how this is coming back to bite Microsoft in the ass. - goldkanga, on 07/06/2009, -2/+41Uh, did you read the graph incorrectly maybe?
FTA:
Add those three up, (IE6+IE7+IE8), however, and IE all together holds only a 54.4 percent market share versus the 65.8 percent combined share in March, 2009. - earthforce1, on 07/05/2009, -2/+40That is what W3C standards are for; MS just refused to follow them.
- mithrasinvictus, on 07/06/2009, -3/+39july 2008
ff=9.37+16.29=25.66%
ie=20.21+46.77=66.98%
july 2009
ff=1.45+27.66=29.11%
ie=30.78+15.35+8.87=55%
I don't care how well Microsoft is competing with its own products, they all suck. The good news is that it's overall market share is down. - inactive, on 07/06/2009, -30/+60this news is wrong
IE*7* lost 15%, not all IEs, since IE8 grew up about 15.33% on the same period

Firefox really is a phoenix reborn from the ashes... - Gudeldar, on 07/06/2009, -0/+26Here is a little exercise for you, visit the StatCounter link they provide and change it from browser version to just browser. You will see that the story is in fact correct.
- MatzahMan, on 07/06/2009, -8/+33DOWN WITH IE! RISE WITH FIREFOX!
- TheInformer, on 07/06/2009, -0/+24Installing the Internet Explorer plugin into it causes the compatibility level to go down though.
- netneutrality, on 07/06/2009, -0/+24Look at the statistics for Antarctica. Scientists know which is the better browser: http://gs.statcounter.com/#browser-an-weekly-20082 ...
- Loonacy, on 07/06/2009, -6/+28I dunno about other people, but if someone posts something like "I will be dugg down" then i tend to oblige them.
- B1665r, on 07/06/2009, -6/+27I take that back. I have no clue how digg works....
- CSFFlame, on 07/06/2009, -3/+24I heard this is because Microsoft released Firefox Downloader 8. Anyone hear about this?
- shinkou, on 07/06/2009, -3/+22The title can be simply translated to, "the web has been becoming a better place since March".
- inactive, on 07/06/2009, -7/+25Google Chrome baby
- jeffgtr, on 07/06/2009, -0/+18What goldkanga said a few lines down.

Sorry nothing personal - B1665r, on 07/06/2009, -20/+38Actually, look at the chart again. The decline of every other browser coincides with the meteoric rise of IE 8.
I will be dugg down for stating the facts as well. But thats how the digg mafia works. - Jektal, on 07/06/2009, -2/+20I'm glad you ignored the contents of the article which explained that that 11.4% drop is IE6, IE7, and IE8 combined.
And while we're at it... It's "to", too. - netneutrality, on 07/06/2009, -2/+20Somebody should release a browser called "Other". It would totally ***** with stats software.
- Kaiosama, on 07/06/2009, -0/+17Microsoft creates Internet Explorer to kill off Netscape.
Netscape dies and releases a code directly responsible for bringing birth to firefox.
Now firefox is killing off Internet Explorer...
...Proof that karma's still as bitchy as ever nowadays :-) - BenRT, on 07/06/2009, -2/+19Don't you ever wish that life was more fun than looking at market share percentages?
- Super6, on 07/06/2009, -3/+20There's an IE spike with each new windows release as all the FF users hop on to download FF
- DarkMatter911, on 07/06/2009, -3/+19IE8 Blows chunks
- Jektal, on 07/06/2009, -0/+15Which is why "Firefox" was originally named "Phoenix". Then someone sued them over a trademark, and they renamed it to "Firebird". Then they got sued again over a trademark and went with "Firefox". And that one stayed up!
- inactive, on 07/06/2009, -3/+18I'm burying you for being an idiot.
- Aethra, on 07/06/2009, -1/+15I'll drink to that.
- drewhoo, on 07/06/2009, -2/+16Linguo.. dead..
- mithrasinvictus, on 07/06/2009, -1/+14Let them keep that *****, we don't want it.
- norman619, on 07/06/2009, -4/+17Who, besides Apple computer owners, uses Safari? I don't kwo anyone who does or has givien it any serious thought. I have heard from lots of people who hate that Apple keeps trying to push Safari during each Quicktime/iTunes update.

- Dug0Fresh, on 07/06/2009, -1/+12I used to love IE, now nothing about it works right. The bottom left says done yet when you try to scroll down the page it won't let you. Its become a real pain in the ass to use. They have forced me to use Firefox even though I do not like that browser, yet I experience none of the problems with Firefox that I do these days with IE8. I don't understand why...
- skit4king, on 07/06/2009, -5/+16Excellent!
- takamalak, on 07/06/2009, -3/+14It sounds like a good idea but WebKit and Mozilla render so similarly they're not an issue. And it better that they compete with each other. We'll get better performance and they'll be quick to adopt all the new standards.
- mithrasinvictus, on 07/06/2009, -1/+12Buried both of them for making me scroll back to find out wtf you are talking about.
- MxM111, on 07/06/2009, -0/+10GPL FTW!
- zeabu, on 07/06/2009, -1/+11after they killed it.
- Gudeldar, on 07/06/2009, -1/+11I buried you for posting irrelevant information. What you posted was in the article, the relevant point here is that overall users of IE has gone down 11.4%. I don't see how anyone "missed" what you posted.
- mithrasinvictus, on 07/06/2009, -1/+11current ones, not the ones IE6 should have supported back in 2001.
- basemodel, on 07/06/2009, -3/+13I dream of a world for my children where IE will comply with standards and perform unlike a slug with a nervous disorder.
- asadotzler, on 07/06/2009, -4/+13Yes, there is a "reason why Opera is left out of all these browser comparison articles". The reason is that Opera's share is tiny and flat.
- jspegele, on 07/06/2009, -1/+10Since no one on this thread seems to have read the article, here's the important part...
"Add those three up, (IE6+IE7+IE8), however, and IE all together holds only a 54.4 percent market share versus the 65.8 percent combined share in March, 2009." - Darkhacker, on 07/06/2009, -1/+9That likely wouldn't register. I'm not sure how these stats are gathered but I imagine it's from a variety of sources. A single visit to Mozilla isn't going to show up.

What is Digg?
