Let's face it - for $1.2bn in R&D and marketing they have achieved less in inventiveness than if they put £100,000 in a suitcase and held competitions on the street for new software ideas. - civperc, on 07/25/2008, -6/+37This is just my personal take, and I'm no corporate whiz, but...
I realize being competitive in several areas of technology is important to long-term success, but some areas are just "already taken care of" - such as online marketing/ads by Google. MS would be doing themselves a favor in my, and others' eyes, by focusing on creating a better OS and less on search, etc. - inactive, on 07/25/2008, -2/+15Awesome.
Meanwhile, Google has spent approximately $0 on traditional marketing. - donte, on 07/25/2008, -0/+13A couple decades ago MS had "already taken care of" the visual operating system market and we all know how that turned out. Technology is fickle. Yes, Google is in a good position right now but that means jack squat moving forward if they can't continue to offer the best service/cost ratio.
- redrock34, on 07/25/2008, -1/+12They need better search results to beat Google. They tried beating Google the old fashioned way (Netscape) by defaulting every XP/Vista install with IE and setting the homepage to MSN, yet people still search with Google. Also with more and more people discovering Firefox, Microsoft is in an even tighter spot.
- soldeejay, on 07/25/2008, -2/+12Being poker-faced achieves little when you show people your cards...
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -2/+11I thought it said pork-faced Ballmer. lol.
- timpoke8, on 07/25/2008, -1/+8Their plan to beat Google is to display more search results on one page and combine images with the main search? I hope that they are hiding a bunch of other plans that will blow Google away if they really want to have a chance.
- skidooer, on 07/25/2008, -2/+9iPhone applications.
- Mr.Gone, on 07/25/2008, -1/+8"We'll start with a sock full of quarters to soften them up. Then we move onto the brass knuckles. We'll get tired, I know we will, but that's no excuse. After about 15 minutes we'll take the tack hammer to his teeth then the Dremmel tool to the ankles. He'll be begging for it to end by that point. Take that Google, you S.O.B."
- StylusEcho, on 07/25/2008, -2/+9Eww. Live Search is rubbish.
- newstart, on 07/25/2008, -3/+9Will someone tell Microsoft that its ok not to be the best in all areas? You're really good in OS (they will improve Vista in time), Office software etc. etc. and now you have the Microsoft Surface coming up, then why not concentrate on that? Instead of fighting a lost battle in search why not invest in cloud computing? Look at Apple, it knows its limits thats why you dont have an Apple Search service.
- ConceptJunkie, on 07/25/2008, -0/+5That's too subtle and articulate for Ballmer. He'd just scream obscenities and maybe moon them.
- ConceptJunkie, on 07/25/2008, -2/+6I wish Microsoft was actually best in any one area. I'd be happier if they were even competitive in any area, that is assuming they aren't just leveraging their monopoly status or strongarming companies.
Microsoft has nothing good to offer any more. All they have left is bullying and lying.
The best thing they could do is fold the company and release their developers in the wild where they might actually be allowed to contribute something useful again without a incompetent, myopic, and paranoid management ruining any good work they might create. - redscofield, on 07/25/2008, -3/+7Balmer is an idiot... I may not have always agreed with Bill Gates, but at least the guy was prone to talking out of his ass and appearing oafish most of the time
- ConceptJunkie, on 07/25/2008, -3/+7It can't be worse than MSN search can it? I mean if that was my product, I'd quit the biz and go become a pig farmer. Of course, if I worked for Microsoft I'd already be fighting not to kill myself out of shame.
- xLSDx, on 07/25/2008, -2/+6Replace "ante up" with "suck ass"
- inactive, on 07/25/2008, -0/+4Of course Google spends a ton on R&D, but that R&D usually creates products that people like and lead to turning a profit.
- pw378, on 07/25/2008, -0/+4Note to Balmer: Search is not poker.. its not random... unless you consider the results provided from Live.com.
- dungar, on 07/25/2008, -1/+4$1.2B annual loss for what, a crude dumbass rip-off of Google's user interface with not even 10% of the functionality? has anybody seen what Live search looks like lately? how about their sponsored ads?
Until now, Microsoft has thrived on copying other more innovative competitors and mass producing clunky software products with plastic-wrapped, bubble gum marketing. This time, the dynamics are different. Just putting together a CSS page that looks somewhat like Google doesn't make a search engine.
Microsoft is sinking like a rock! - IronDonut, on 07/25/2008, -5/+8Apple is good on the surface of computing. But really once you get to any level of depth they really aren't a player. On the server side for example in any typcial large commercial data center you'd be hard pressed to find any Apple hardware racked. Out of our 20,000sq/ft colo facility I've found exactly two Apple products; 2 XServe RAID storage units. Zero Apple servers.
To contrast that the datacenter is full to the rafters of Microsoft 2003 and SqlServer.
Microsoft is really good in so many areas. I don't think any one tech company has as wide an array of good technology products out there. From video games to enterprise databases? It is actually pretty amazing how many areas Microsoft covers. - gquaglia, on 07/25/2008, -2/+5I agree with you except MS does not make the best operating system, its simply the most popular and that's not quite the same thing.
- pauls88, on 07/25/2008, -1/+4erm.......FAIL?
- erikhensarling, on 07/25/2008, -0/+3Mr. Ballmer
Can you do us all a favor and stop trying to be Google and start making better operating systems?
Love, me. - N01SE, on 07/25/2008, -0/+3You can check out the "no paging results" method that they were talking about using on live search below, it simply uses javascript to load/show data once you've scrolled to the bottom, watch the scroll bar as you scroll down the page:
http://www.humanized.com/reader/ - inactive, on 07/25/2008, -1/+4HAI GUIZE THIS IS OUR PLAN TO BEAT YOU. WANT A COPY?
- djmik83, on 07/25/2008, -3/+6Developers... developers... developers!!!!!
- santaliqueur, on 07/25/2008, -0/+3I am looking forward to someone teaching you what "monopoly" means.
- JQP123, on 07/25/2008, -2/+5"... but some areas are just "already taken care of"..."
In other words, competition is not a "good thing"? - erictheninja, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2@MacParrot. He's not saying give up. pw378 is saying the money is better spent elsewhere. You're both correct in your statements, but from a business perspective, entering niche markets and gain a stornghold to eventually merge into larger markets is typically the way to attack.
Something to note. Microsoft has a huge amount of cash sitting around. If they don't spend it, their stock value will go down b/c investors will get tired of cash sitting on the balance sheet and not earning a return. - m00nmaster, on 07/25/2008, -1/+3There's no chair big enough. GIVE UP!
- newstart, on 07/25/2008, -1/+3Yes I agree and we should not always blame Microsoft for all the world's problems just because of Vista. Remember they are also the creators of Windows XP that people dont wanna give up. And yes Apple is famous because of its User Experience and thats it.
- m00nmaster, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2Like Windows Desktop Search? Useless.
- ChayesFSS, on 07/25/2008, -2/+4I won't help at all unless they send me that Zune I worked so hard to get for free!
- JQP123, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2"Search in particular is one that is hard to catch up in, and would probably behoove Microsoft to push their advantage elsewhere."
Before the XBox, lots of people said the same about gaming consoles. Gaming in particular is one that is hard to catch up in, and would probably behoove Microsoft to push their advantage elsewhere. - kraftj, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2There would be no Google to speak of today if they said, "Ahh, Yahoo has that market taken care of... There's no point."
- stateofmind, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2Don't know why you're being dugg down, oh wait no "sarcasam" tag, the people that dugg you down are not smart enough to realize this.
- Jexie, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2So am I, I just hope it isn't MS that pulls it off.
- surferjoemaui, on 07/25/2008, -1/+3If you look closely at the graphic you will see that 4 sticks of underarm deodorant will big a big part of the 'plan'.
- MtheoryX, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2FTA:
He didn't detail future R&D and marketing spend, just promised Microsoft would succeed with more - yes - anteing up. "How do we succeed? We are going to have to ante up in a significant way to even be in this game. If you play poker, you have to meet the main pot to be in the game."
Or, in other words, throw money at the problem, and it will magically fix itself, right? - llbbl, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2for a second there i thought you said Joker-Faced.............
- v4vishal, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2People, Ballmer is not Evil. He is *USING* Google.
- inactive, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2Cry about it.
- booyahbitch, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2I think this qualifies as EPIC FAIL! at this point.
- Undiculous, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2No, the point is not that competition is bad, but rather than Microsoft does not necessarily need to compete in all fields. Search in particular is one that is hard to catch up in, and would probably behoove Microsoft to push their advantage elsewhere.
- dungar, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2FTA: He dismissed the proposed Yahoo! deal as a mere "tactic" to provide advertising scale and relevance. "We have alternative paths for getting relevance up," Ballmer said.
--when you're looking for alternative paths for getting it up, it usually means ur in deep ***** and/or probably need viagra. - DrediKnight, on 07/25/2008, -1/+3Until the morale improves....
- MacParrot, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2I'm no fan of Microsoft's business practices (though I do use their products and have no real issues with them), but to just say give up?
As a regular and long-time Macintosh user, where would Apple be if they had just given up instead of releasing OS X? They were (and still are if you want to believe that market-share means everything) getting their "asses kicked" on the desktop and still are a strong and vibrant competitor.
Keep trying Microsoft. No one company should completely dominate any tech field, including Google. - kraftj, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1I've never been a fan of the Microsoft search engines; but you've got to admit, with two huge players like Microsoft and Google, only good things & innovations can come in the fight to be the best search engine around.
