- evazan, on 01/03/2008, -1/+48What you all seem when you slag Windows Mobile is that no other phone OS has this versatility (hopefully Android will also). That's why WM is not bad as people try to say it is - it's powerful and versatile. Even though you may not like it until you tweak it, at least with WM you CAN tweak it, run 3rd party apps and a dozen different media types. As usual the biggest problem with Windows is users not knowing how to use it or bothering to learn. This UI is fantastic but in the end it's still Windows running it.
- BLAM8, on 01/03/2008, -9/+37WM Not Sucking. Pretty crazy thought, don't you think?
- iofthestorm, on 01/03/2008, -6/+30Yeah, at least on Windows Mobile you can load an app that fixes basic problems, even if they shouldn't have been there to begin with. On some other phone I've heard about, you need to hack it and risk bricking it with an update to install programs like this.
- lukas88, on 01/03/2008, -4/+26And here I thought it was my phone that was slow. WM just kind of chugs along. But running this app, everything is smooth and seamless. MS really dropped the ball...
- Jibberwalk, on 01/03/2008, -1/+12The rumor is, Microsoft is well aware of the issues and is addressing them in WM 7/8. Whether that will actually come to fruition is debatable. (Gizmodo story: http://tinyurl.com/25hgbq )
- cgreentx, on 01/03/2008, -0/+9I carried my blackjack for a year and restarted it about 4 times during that year. Those restarts were done for updates and an occasional Bluetooth hiccup. I've had my Blackjack 2 for nearly 2 months and haven't restarted it a single time. I think people dog WM5/6 a bit harshly considering half the people bashing it have probably never carried a WM Phone.
- p51d007, on 01/03/2008, -0/+9Agree.......
One reason I bought a WM phone over the iPhone was 3rd party apps. Face it, for most "business" types, we live in a windows world. I have to use Excel, outlook, word daily. - rileyhallwood, on 01/03/2008, -0/+9oof, the possibility of a nice UI on a cheaper device than the iphone is awfully appealing.
- mkearl, on 01/03/2008, -2/+10The UI of this thing is great. I think the touch from HTC has the right idea, however after loading this thing I was blow away at how easy it is to use and can see these guys are much more on track than the others. Anyone with a "touch screen only" phone needs this little app. I would like to see some more customization, but in all reality I can't complain. This is pretty dang cool and I would recommend it to anyone.
- lcarsdeveloper, on 01/03/2008, -0/+7I know this is going to look like spam, but this is PointUI's other website:
http://there-is-no-place-like-home.com/
It's really just for marketing, but it has some short reviews on it, and links to some videos/photos.
When someone like me can look at a GUI and it makes him want to buy one of these phones, then you know you're doing a good job. Not bad for "0.92 Beta"! - aiten, on 01/03/2008, -4/+10This is one of the best things i've ever seen. Ever. My phone is now USABLE.
I'm still going to dump Windows Mobile as soon as I can though. - darkphan, on 01/03/2008, -0/+6Because the blog post had a video of it in action?
- 0260, on 01/03/2008, -1/+7what is with this obsession to use fingers instead of stylus or buttons? its not ***** kindergarten. I still have the wizard with spb mobile shell and 95% of the time i use the buttons. thats called being productive without looking like a techno-dick
- weeeezzll, on 01/03/2008, -1/+7Well, seeing how they released 6 which for the most part is just 5 with a small collection of updates, I some how doubt they will change anything about it until someone releases something that actually challenges their market share on the phone.
I spent quite a bit of time developing in the Windows Desktop Shell community. The Shell community made tons of interesting/useful/innovative enhancements, and MS was keeping a close eye on the community. Still from 95 to ME to 98 to 2000 they didn't make a single change to the UI except to change color schemes and update icons. Finally in XP they implemented a skinning system, but for the most part left the UI alone. It wasn't until Vista that MS started to feel like the OS X was making their UI look dated and old that they updated it. And MS still has the same basic, "Start Menu" mentality. They can't even escape this in a small handheld device which demands a new UI foundation. Computer users are tired of having a giant menu of programs to choose from. They don't want to select a program to do something, they just want to "do something". MS started down this path by cleaning up file associations and making auto launch more intuitive, but basically stopped there.
</rant> - CLShortFuse, on 01/03/2008, -1/+6Along the same lines, WM uesrs should check out S2U2 (slide2unlock). It mimmicks the iPhone's slide2unlock functionality and very smooth. Landscape support as well. Here are a couple of screen shots: http://handheld.softpedia.com/progScreenshots/S2U2 ...
Here's the xda thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3 ...
The S2U2 Settings application has the same slide scrolling and very smooth. It was built first with c# and then C++ - gotcheaprice, on 01/03/2008, -0/+5I kept on pressing the play button on my keyboard to turn off the music so I could listen to the video but then I realized my music player wasn't even open -_-
Oh, by the way, Beat Laments the World by Nujabes - aussieNickuss, on 01/03/2008, -0/+5I have an i-mate JAMin, which feels really really slow using WM5....the menus are sluggish, and the today screen seems to have to redraw each time I unlock the phone. I just installed this, and all the animations are fluid, the different screens appear and scroll without any delay. WM must be a real dog of an operating system if a 3rd party app can feel so much faster running on top of it.
- aussieNickuss, on 01/03/2008, -1/+6I don't see this as "faking it", more like improving what I already have.
- Demens, on 01/03/2008, -3/+7The UI has few bugs and missing functionality for now. But the developers seem to be working very hard on it and have already updated the software once.
Gotta love Windows mobile at least for the guys who reinvent the wheel just to fix what MS didn't get right. - decker12, on 01/03/2008, -0/+4Well, you get what you pay for with this product. Drop them an email - I'm certain the project wouldn't mind using your design and programming skills to make it prettier and more professional.
- jcsw, on 01/03/2008, -0/+4That's not a very good analogy... if you carry that analogy over to this *other* phone (or rather what he said about it), it would be like an OS that dosen't let you install antivirus/spyware/firewall programs, even if you wanted to.
Not bashing anything, except your analogy, cause I'm in no position to compare Windows Mobile to *Other* phones, seeing as all I have is a cheap-ass phone. - hexydes, on 01/03/2008, -0/+4Considering that once you get out of system-level interaction, you're still using the original applications on the phone, I would imagine that it would look no different.
- LuckyEMS, on 01/03/2008, -1/+5he laughs at you for spending so much on an iphone for a mediocre piece of crap =)
- Kerath, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3Oops, wrong link:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3 ...
- mntalkase, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3I just tried it. The install was a breeze (used the CAB installer directly on my phone). No noticeable hiccups and the UI is gorgeous. I'm sold.
- FFIO, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3For an early release, I think this ap is awesome! Best part, the price! I can't wait to see it improve.
- hexydes, on 01/03/2008, -1/+4Solid post. Describes Microsoft's major problem (never innovating, only reacting) perfectly.
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -2/+5because using a stylus makes you look like a complete *****
- aiten, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3Right, i've just converted 5 people in the office! This thing is spreading like wildfire.
To those who said it doesn't fix the problems in WM - duh, but it does provide a much better, quicker interface than the start menu, and that is one of the most annoying parts of this phone. - Kerath, on 01/03/2008, -1/+4It's faster.
- bbland, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3It works on phones without touchscreens too. (e.g: The Q)
- sHockz, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3ummm.....THANK YOU!
i have the mogul 6800, this really really really helped. dugg and dugg. - cgreentx, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3The Wizard's battery life issue was because HTC built a ***** device, not because of WM. I carried the Apache (Sprint 6700) and it was the worst phone I've ever had in my life. I should not have to leave a device on the charger just to make it home in the evening. Most WM devices make it a full 1-3 days without issue but that thing couldn't even make it through lunch. I don't know how that thing made it past QA onto a carrier's network.
- donkeycrock, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3Just downloaded it, and it works great, i can't wait for the updates, has a few bugs
- fffizzz, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Downloaded and installed earlier.. pretty slick interface... if you have the phone set to lock display, it presents some issues when you wanna turn the phone off... a little more work though and this is a sweet app.
- yongmuller, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2I installed this on my Treo 750 running the new WM6 update and it works very well. As soon as I chose a dark blue theme, it all looks very uniform. All it's missing is supporting the today screen plugin architecture for our 3rd party plugins. (i.e. sbp mobile shell, calendar +, etc.)
- surfing, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2No, it's for Mobile: http://pointui.com/Home.aspx
Looks like they are working on a Pocket PC version "Home for Pocket PC 2003 is just around the corner." - NoCt1, on 01/03/2008, -1/+3I have used wm5 since it started. and I can say I hate it. WM5 crashes on me probly 2 to 3 times a day
out of no where. someone will call and it will lock up and i have to pull the battery out and restart it. I am currently looking at phones right now and I have decided to wait for the Android or the iPhone 2, also the blackberry 9900 is supposed to be decent. Whichever OS is the best out of those three and on the nicest phone will be good in my book. Other than that WM5 freezes all the time. Thats not harsh is it. Coming from a user. - surfing, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2That works well, thanks (used the latest version listed in Kerath's second comment: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3 ... )
- erwlas, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Sorry, but that is incorrect. The HTC Touch is one of many examples that uses Windows Mobile 6 Professional. This uses a 'TOUCH' interface
- SSUK, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2In b4 you get dogged by Apple fanboys for saying we live in a "Windows world".
Anyway, price is also a nice big contributory factor to why I would get a WM phone over the iPhone. - cr3ative, on 01/03/2008, -1/+3Seems fantastic - I popped it on my HP iPaq, which isn't a phone - as the site says, it simply won't load the Home application, but the update manager loaded fine, which has all the major UI niceties.
It's very responsive and 90% accurate with interpreting what I wanted the menu to do. I can't wait to see this work on non-mobile PDAs. - higgy345, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Yup just installed it on my Mogul and I'm so happy I can navigate with my fingers now. No more hitting the wrong thing 3 times in a row with my thumb!
- kidcodea, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2"I see what you did there! ;)" + "vid or it didn't happen" = EPIC FAIL
- KostisGR, on 01/03/2008, -1/+3I see what you did there! ;)
- miketwalker, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1The reason you are seeing the standard windows screens is probably just because they are still in beta on the first version. For the fact that this is an unreleased beta, and that they have told us it will be free... my jaw has dropped. I think their slide interfaces and such are going to be quite useful once they get the customization the HTC touchflo has (I'm using the same rom you are on my 6700) and are able to extend certain aspects they've done well (looking at previous calls is simple and very useful) to the remainder of the UI this will be amazing.
So, I would just say you may want to check back once they have some more time (keep in mind this is brand new and in beta). For a free product that appears to be being developed purely in a few peoples' free times, I'm impressed. I wish more open-source products could put out such a stable and clean version in their initial beta. Lol. - LayZ, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Its pretty good but you can't customise it enough yet. I sure as hell don't want to use WMP.
- theholyraptor, on 04/07/2008, -0/+1That one guy had surgery to alter his thumb for easier device usage. There is always that option.
- Kerath, on 01/03/2008, -1/+2That's an old version. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3 ...
- theholyraptor, on 04/07/2008, -0/+1I have the 6700, i bought it for the many features it had, including a really good keyboard and the larger screen then most every other phone at the time. I also bought a really good case to protect it, which doesn't let me open the keyboard, and since then I've always used the onscreen keyboard and a stylus or my finger. I think it's about as fast as using the hardware keyboard. The biggest condition I'd like an intuitive touch interface that I only have to use my finger for is using it while driving. If I could use my finger at a short light to punch in an address into gps software etc, it would be far better to have a touch interface. (That and I've gone through a good number of styli, (sp?) They seem to like to shoot out of my phone if I drop my phone for some reason.)
