- ducttape36, on 05/21/2009, -2/+30imagine, netflix for windows media center only working in windows... bastards.
- strictnein, on 05/21/2009, -3/+23Breaking: companies in other countries free to start up similar services!
- ducttape36, on 05/21/2009, -0/+19its powered by silverlight in the browser as well.
- daveisfera, on 05/20/2009, -2/+19Awesome! I will definitely love the convenience of not having to open up IE or turn on my 360 to watch stuff on Netflix.
- Phearce, on 05/21/2009, -0/+17Not really Netflix' fault -- there's only so much negotiating you can do with the MPAA/RIAA.
- teethandeyes, on 05/21/2009, -0/+12Netflix has an amazing library of physical DVD's.
- retral, on 05/21/2009, -0/+11Netflix still needs to bolster the the amount of stuff in their digital distribution system.
- devnullDood, on 05/21/2009, -0/+11Now all we need is a Hulu Plugin with Extender support.
- strictnein, on 05/21/2009, -0/+11Since he's not using IE nor his 360, guess where he's probably going to watch the movies? On his TV.
- wolfing, on 05/21/2009, -0/+10considering it hasn't been released yet, and won't for at least 5 months or so, I'm not surprised
- king_aaronj, on 05/21/2009, -2/+12Make it work on linux, and in Boxee and then I'll be happy.
- dist0rtedwave, on 05/21/2009, -3/+12Its a little annoying they are putting so much energy into getting new customers, and so little into satisfying the old.
By that I mean they keep adding places to play your movies, but there are hardly enough movies to play. - Aleman360, on 05/21/2009, -4/+13What do you care if it uses Silverlight or not? It works fine.
- Aleman360, on 05/21/2009, -0/+8The day they add HBO shows to Instant Viewing is the day I lose all productivity.
- adml_shake, on 05/21/2009, -0/+7I'm a little disappointed that there isn't any media extender support for this. I know I can watch them on my 360, but it would be nice to be able to do it all my music and video stuff from MC. I hope they fix this soon.
- sgxyay, on 05/21/2009, -0/+7I'm pretty sure the software development and business/content licensing teams are separate.
- Aleman360, on 05/21/2009, -3/+10Breaking: other countries are free to create and distribute their own content within their country!

I'll just take a cue from a Linux user when I complain that something I need isn't available on Linux:
"Code it yourself, you can do that with the freedom of Linux." - antoniuk, on 05/21/2009, -7/+13No Windows 7 support yet is lame
- pdxtian, on 05/21/2009, -0/+6No
HTPC (typically connected to TV) users cannot effectively navigate the website and make selections using their browser. This software lets us use a remote control instead of a mouse and keyboard and allows us to actually be able to read what is on the screen, such as the title and description. Websites are designed to be viewed from close up, not from your couch, which is where HTPC users want to be. - Tenareth, on 05/21/2009, -1/+7I prefer it on the 360, since the 360 has the big screen. But it does make sense to add it to Media Center.
- Tenareth, on 05/21/2009, -0/+6I'm sure they are trying, but unfortunately that isn't completely up to them, the labels need to allow it and they have shown over and over they just don't get this "Internet" thing.
- costumemaker, on 05/21/2009, -0/+5there have been 3rd party apps that have allowed this for a few years that I have been using. They have been working just fine. I use one called MyNetflix. Look it up, its a good one.
it streams the movie to a pbuffer that you can treat just like a regular movie by pausing, rewinding, fast forwarding etc etc. There is another one out there (of which i cant remember the name, sorry. If I remember I will post) that even lets you download the whole movie for later watching. - Shadoblak, on 05/21/2009, -3/+8Ask any Linux or Mac user if they're disappointed that their Windows Media Center uses Silverlight?
- pdxtian, on 05/21/2009, -1/+6It's actually not the software corporations it's the movie studios who own the rights to the media you are wanting to enjoy. This could be due to piracy concerns they have with your region or not having any ads which can target and make money off of you, a person not living in the united states who can not buy all the products being placed in the said media or ads (my theory as to why Hulu is US only). With Netflix being a service which you pay to use, the studios have most likely imposed a restriction over other concerns such as piracy.
- Aleman360, on 05/21/2009, -0/+5It's a better interface for HTPC users.
- Jareth86, on 05/21/2009, -0/+4Wasn't Netflix already available on Boxee?
- kartman2001, on 05/21/2009, -0/+4Probably won't, I'm sure they like milking people for their XBox Live Gold accounts.
- jedinate, on 05/21/2009, -1/+5They need to show us PS3 owners some love already.
- ducttape36, on 05/21/2009, -0/+4I've had a netflix plugin for windows media center for years now, while im sure this will offer better remote control support i'll never know, beause i switched to windows 7 and its not available yet.
- tomato3017, on 05/21/2009, -0/+4You do know you can attach a computer to a big screen tv right? At my apartment that's all we have hooked up to the tv.
- kingp, on 05/21/2009, -1/+5Netflix on Zune would be amazing. Stream it to my Zune to the TV...nice.
- trizzleatl, on 05/21/2009, -4/+8That's a limitation of your platform, not Silverlight. One day you fanboys will wake up and realize your choice to go against the flow of the technological mainstream was maybe not the best idea.
- seltaeb4, on 05/21/2009, -0/+4Buffering...
- MattB123, on 05/21/2009, -0/+3You'd need a pretty fat pipe for HD movies.
- Duncoln, on 05/21/2009, -1/+4weeee another wonderful service from netflix that I can't use cuz I'm in Canada
- 2Bnor2B, on 05/21/2009, -0/+3All streaming rights are negotiated and have an expiration dates. Maybe to promote a DVD sale, the rights holder may decide that they don't want that particular IP available online at a given time.
This happens with BBC content a lot. What is available online in Spring may not be renewed in the Fall. - lornefs, on 05/21/2009, -0/+3***** you eh!
:) - birch25, on 05/21/2009, -2/+5Silverlight - a fine technology that loons hate for no good reason
Windows only - WMC is a part of Windows and can't be ported over to other platforms. you can still Watch Instantly on OSX
No Extender support - well sure, that would be nice - IHateRegisterin, on 05/21/2009, -1/+3So Microsoft users will now have two ways to watch Netflix? What about Linux or Sony PS3 users?
- strictnein, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2SilverLight can do HD now.
- FKnight, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2Yes, but not everyone uses Boxee.
- smackydoodle, on 05/21/2009, -2/+4Why does the US have to provide services for you? Do it yourselves.
- belebih, on 05/21/2009, -1/+3Great. Now allow streaming content to Puerto Rico and I'll come back. I refuse to pay full price while getting half the service.
- TVarmy, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2Mainly, it's better support for remotes in the interface and larger text that's easier to read across the room. If you don't have an Xbox, but do have a laptop you could plug into your TV, it's convenient.
- antoniuk, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2And again why not? Get it out there now and test it so when rtm comes around it will be ready.
- birch25, on 05/21/2009, -1/+3I don't know about Linux, but Silverlight is installed on my Mac and runs fine. I don't see what all the hate is over Silverlight is based on.
- ahawks, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2If only they'd let PC users stream HD (in WMC or a browser). Seriously, why can the set-top boxes and Xbox360 do HD, but the original user base can't?
- FKnight, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2@battleroyalex
Do you know what an HTPC is or what WMC is? - FKnight, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2There are plenty of PCs geared specifically for use as Windows Media Centers. Unlike Apple, Microsoft allows major OEMs and smaller PC builders to build PCs based on Windows technology, and Windows Media Center is a Windows technology.
This means that you have a wider selection of Media Center systems of every shape and size (set top box, tower form factor with RAID, cool blue-glowing cases, touch screens, etc) instead of the one size fits all Apple TV.
Additionally, it makes as much sense to "remove the Windows environment" from a WMC PC as it does to "remove the MacOS environment" from an Apple TV.
You didn't think Apple TV's OS was built from scratch as an entirely separate codebase from Mac OS did you?
There's a reason both of these platforms are already able to see music, photos, and movies stored elsewhere on your network --- because they both sit on top of their respective operating systems designed for such things as network file access. -
