- Senn, on 12/13/2007, -14/+64Intentionally running Microsoft sanctioned spyware? You couldn't pay me enough to do that.
- teh_techie, on 12/13/2007, -1/+36I would assume they're meaning that they don't want to give out any more free copies than they already have. They likely had an overwhelming response. Their purpose in this is to get a decent size sample of people to agree to install their spyware. They have their target audience now, so no more free offer...
- Dhalsim007, on 12/13/2007, -12/+45Ummm... isn't Vista Ultimate a downloaded product or upgrade? So how can they "run out" of product?!?!
- teh_techie, on 12/13/2007, -1/+19And, proving that you, yourself, are one in the same.
- JasonCox, on 12/13/2007, -2/+20"Ummm... isn't Vista Ultimate a downloaded product or upgrade? So how can they "run out" of product?!?!"
Marketing or whoever is running this promo has a budget which means they can only give out 'x' number of copies. Beleive it or not, even the people who work at Microsoft have to pay for Windows. - inactive, on 12/13/2007, -2/+19Dude, they were offering something FREE for a while to research usage patterns, the got the amount of testers they wanted and now it's over, what the hell is wrong about it?
- Phyltre, on 12/13/2007, -0/+16Funny thing is, when Digg first started up, these kinds of stories would frontpage all the time. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any promotions that actually stayed valid through their stay on the front page--Digg has that effect on "while supplies last."
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -9/+24Enjoy your rootkits, suckers!
- OKeric, on 05/12/2008, -3/+12I think you can download it, but maybe they actually mail out physical copies with this. Otherwise if it's downloading it, it wouldn't make sense that they ran out.
- cracker42, on 12/13/2007, -2/+11PAGE 2
Microsoft was not available for comment Tuesday night.
Thanks for the valuable update! - inactive, on 12/13/2007, -1/+9piratebays keeping it going cough cough http://thepiratebay.org/tor/3927114/Windows_Vista_ ...
- expert01, on 12/13/2007, -0/+8Pretty sure they mean the number of licenses they apportioned for office and vista.
</oblivious> - nizzy1115, on 12/13/2007, -8/+16HA, you're SO funny.
- andycr512, on 12/13/2007, -2/+9"This auction is for a copy of Windows Vista, NIB. Records your every move."
- joshuaer, on 12/13/2007, -0/+7Page 2. ( see below) are they just fishing for that extra page load.
PAGE 2 - ninjasenses, on 12/13/2007, -0/+6They probably set aside a certain amount of copies not expecting to recieve all the attention they did. When they got the attention, people just ate it up realy quick. Why all the MS hate? I use ubuntu but I'm not gonna go around bash other systems like some self-righteous fanboy.
- phoomp, on 12/13/2007, -1/+6I thought it was obvious that they were giving out endless numbers ....
- darkecho, on 12/13/2007, -0/+5The free stuff I have gotten from Microsoft (several things including Vista Business) has all be physical copies. So I would assume the same. Also, if they did offer a downloadable version I am sure they would have a quota on that as well. That way 6 billion people couldn't use the program and everybody in the world had a copy.
- Phyltre, on 12/13/2007, -0/+5I find it hilarious that people actually expected Microsoft to run through their entire supply of product as part of a free promotion. In the business world, you authorize a specific amount of product as promotional, clear it with legal and make sure the taxes aren't showing them as sold as retail, then run the promotion. Unless the company in question is closing its doors or a product has been discontinued, you're never going to run through your entire internal stock.
- boflaade, on 12/13/2007, -0/+5When a limited offer is made, usually LIMITED means LIMITED. There is a site that offers free licensed software once a day. The various software companies will only make it available for that LIMITED time. They obviously have more, for a price. Why would Microsoft NOT have a limit?
- Philbert, on 12/13/2007, -0/+5I wish I had known about this I'd love a copy of Vista for my laptop, I would've gladly installed the monitoring software on there too since I don't use it very often.
- ewc80, on 12/13/2007, -7/+11That is the first time I have seen the term "exhausted the supply of software" Try a copy and paste.
- OKeric, on 05/12/2008, -0/+4Does anyone know how to tell if you got in on the program soon enough to receive a free copy of vista?
- koko775, on 12/13/2007, -0/+4Perhaps the bean-counters set a monetary value on the feedback, and the program achieved or overran their target number of participants?
Really, it's perfectly reasonable from a business standpoint. - andycr512, on 12/13/2007, -3/+7No. There's a big difference between being able to watch your every move on your computer and being able to know what browser/platform you use and perhaps with a tracking cookie a select few sites you've also been to.
- flowctrl, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3Hopefully PB doesn't "run out" of software too!
- dionhewson, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3lol...good call...
- estvir, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3Obvious to intelligent people, ewc80, elvenseven and so on clearly aren't, there the one of the lower level, "M$" bashing, hardcore rebels.
- danz32, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3I signed up for this program on 10/31, so its been open for awhile. It just didn't become popular until a few days ago when it hit all the major blogging sites.
Call it spyware, call it whatever you want. Users can choose to install it, and nothing being forced. I don't have a problem running it on my computer at all - Daggity, on 12/13/2007, -1/+4"Yeah, hey guys! Vista was so popular, we had to withdraw the offer to get it free! Let's see Linux and Mac do /that/!"
- aaryn, on 12/13/2007, -1/+3Your last three or four comments here have been about Microsoft haters, maybe just don't worry about it so much.
- fafaforza, on 12/13/2007, -0/+2Had this been Apple, all the comments would have been about how everyone wants OSX and how great it is. People can't thing rationally and are unable to keep their preconceived notions from making them biased.
- nizzy1115, on 12/13/2007, -2/+4Oh come on, you know you cant sell this.
- inactive, on 12/13/2007, -0/+2"PAGE 2
Microsoft was not available for comment Tuesday night." - tpv2066, on 12/13/2007, -3/+5I like my choice on this. I installed it to get Vista (why the hell not) but its on a VM on my Mac that I only use when I have to.
- angrychimp, on 12/13/2007, -26/+28Buried as inaccurate. There's no way that many people want Vista.
- gameforge, on 12/13/2007, -0/+2No, legal search laws would apply. You gave them permission.
- damentz, on 12/13/2007, -0/+2Someone did a "cut and paste"
Thats when they ran out - Asrrin29, on 12/13/2007, -0/+2article says 2pm tuesday was the cutoff point. If you submitted your stuff while the paragraph was still up you'd get the goods, but not today. I missed it by hours :(
- fafaforza, on 12/13/2007, -0/+2> I shoulda known that MS would pull this.
Pulled what? Spelling out the exact terms of an agreement, giving you a choice of not signing up and/or buying the retail version without the call-home software?
> Im just greatful i didnt sign up for the spyware program
You're grateful that you were able to make a choice based on the disclosure that MS had on their site? The site they didn't force you to visit nor interact with?
Do you even see and understand what you're writing? - compgeek, on 12/13/2007, -4/+5even if they were giving away free Vista and Office 2007 is it worth the privacy intrusion for them to be able to see the number and type of files in your documents and other such things think about it they could if they wanted say if someone had 10K + MP3's just say oh in good faith we may have passed that information to the RIAA
not worth that risk not even for free software - kacymartin, on 12/13/2007, -0/+12pm Pacific time that is
- OKeric, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1I can't remember when I submitted the thing, do they send you a confirmation about receiving a free gift?
- roberto_deneero, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1www.apple.com/store
- Asrrin29, on 12/13/2007, -7/+8Seeing as how the engadget article is on the front page, this needs to be up there as soon as possible to let everyone know.
- gameforge, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1I'd rather pay the $400 for Vista Ultimate to protect my privacy. Not going to pay $1 for Vista ***** Edition, but if you really want me to be your personal marketing beacon, I charge hundreds. Per hour.
- davidbond, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1T'internet says two things no. Three or more things, yes. (http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/commas.htm )
I'd have avoided the problem with "Microsoft yanks free Vista and Office offers" - Sushubh, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1that's true and that makes it pretty worth it!
