- frostbyt, on 04/04/2008, -12/+175Why wouldn't they extend the life on the best piece of software they ever produced?
- inurb, on 04/04/2008, -32/+99That's because it works and people like it. Keep your ***** Vista and hold off on Windows 7.
- bbqsalad, on 04/04/2008, -15/+67*downgrading
- nesibus, on 04/04/2008, -27/+76I will sit back and wait for the Vista lovers to start yelling about how theirs has never crashed or had a single problem......thats great...really...but for the other 90% that are pulling their hair out.....reality still exist.
- shujin, on 04/04/2008, -3/+32Man, remember when we thought XP was terrible, and we couldn't wait for the update?
It's really a sad turn of events - JohnnyKdiggs, on 04/04/2008, -0/+28You mean solitaire?
// Relax people, I'm kidding. - rocketboot, on 04/04/2008, -3/+30I'm pretty certain that frostbyt was only saying XP was the best software Microsoft ever made, not necessarily the best software ever.
- JT114881, on 04/04/2008, -14/+38Good, now we can hold off on upgrading for just a little longer.
- iRelinquish, on 04/04/2008, -11/+35Could it be more obvious, they dont want people considering linux?
- inactive, on 04/04/2008, -4/+24Impossible. Vista by nature is a resource hog. No magical drivers or addons will make it run faster than XP (with the same changes).
Its like giving a fat guy Nikes for a race. Does it really make a difference? - Wartz, on 04/04/2008, -19/+38My copy of vista has never given me a single problem except for the one MS that just fixed. Copying large files over a network used to be a roll of the dice on if it made it or not. Now they always work and I get the full speed of my SATA II drive
happy now?
And no, its not 90% who have issues. It's just an extremely loudmouthed minority, like all things with problems. - ha1f, on 04/04/2008, -3/+21And I'll sit back and wait for the Linux lovers to start yelling about how their installations have never had a single problem, they've never had to touch the command line, and everyone should install Linux....that's great...really...but for the other people (I'm not going to make up numbers) that are still pulling their hair out and don't have 100% compatible hardware...problems still exist.
- inactive, on 04/04/2008, -1/+19Best piece of software THEY produced. THEY as in Microsoft.
- stevenstclair, on 04/04/2008, -7/+23Sorry, but considering my 3DMark06 score is like 2000 points higher in XP, I will never go to Vista until some good drivers and better gaming support arise.
- MacParrot, on 04/04/2008, -4/+18Microsoft has been making Vista better, fixing many of the bugs that plagued it upon its initial release. With an undertaking so big, there were bound to be some problems. Apple has had its own share of difficulties with 10.5 (though they too are working through it). An example would be my kid's G5 iMac that I put on and then took off 10.5 as it's wireless went to complete crap. It seems to be a pretty common problem amongst G5 machines (though my iBook G4 worked fine with 10.5) so my kid's computer will remain at 10.4 for the forseeable future.
I would agree that any company, no matter how big, can doom itself through bad desicions, but Microsoft will get past this and they'll be just fine. They'll probably lose some marketshare over this to alternate platforms, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. Having the share they do of the market has made them complacent and a little fear will make them do better next time. - theaceoffire, on 04/04/2008, -8/+20^_^ Hi, we were expecting you.
- luchid, on 04/04/2008, -9/+21I've personally had to format and install XP on about 15 laptops my friends and family bought because they couldn't tolerate Vista. But when you say this you get "OMG LIES VISTA WORKS FINE FOR ME!1!!11"
- apzdsx, on 04/04/2008, -1/+13Yeah, no one can possibly be dissatisfied with Linux.
- mattus, on 04/04/2008, -15/+26Can someone tell me exactly what is wrong with Vista? I know it's not perfect, but I'm damn sick of people bashing it and giving no evidence just to jump on this stupid gravy train.
- iRelinquish, on 04/04/2008, -2/+13On lower end pc's? C'mon please tell me that was a joke
- cawpin, on 04/04/2008, -1/+11The thief's what?
- hadak, on 04/04/2008, -0/+10I moved over to the less popular Win2k. I loved Win2k. Very stable, as opposed to Win9x.
- mancat, on 04/04/2008, -0/+10So what about it stinks? I've been using Vista 32-bit simply because I don't need to run any 64-bit applications and don't want the extra overhead. I've had no problems with it.
- kenplaysviola, on 04/04/2008, -2/+11I agree with you in that the lack of confidence in Vista will hurt Microsoft's business, however, I disagree with you in that Microsoft needs to come out and say, "Yes, we know Vista is complete ***** and we've let you all down". Why should they say something that isn't completely true? I'm also a systems admins and manage about 100+ computers, mostly Windows + Windows Server/Linux servers. I have moved a lot of my workstations over to Windows Vista Business edition. How much problems have I had with Vista? Zero. My Vista computers range from the ASUS eeePC laptop to custom built Intel Q6600 quad core machines, and everything in between from Dell and Toshiba laptops/PC's. I have no idea what kind of problems you are experiencing so I can't say this is true for everyone, but from my experience Vista has been fine and do not consider it to be "shiat".
- whyufail, on 04/04/2008, -5/+14Unfortunately no. DX10 was their hook to try and screw gamers into buying that crap. It's so integrated with the rest of the ***** in Vista that there is no way they could get it to work in XP. They would need to make some kind of bizarre DX10XP equivalent which would require building it from the ground up again, not going to happen, especially when its still their only way to force gamers into their crappy OS.
- Dominicc2003, on 04/04/2008, -8/+17I think microsoft realised that if they didn't extend the life of xp, people like me will just get a pirated version of XP on our next PC - meaning less money for them!
The only way I can see myself ever using Vista is if windows 7 turns out to be bad! - jhuebel, on 04/04/2008, -0/+9It wouldn't push people to Macs and Linux, really. The core market that's fighting moving to Vista is the business market. Businesses are far too invested in certain Windows-only software to be able to make the switch.
- DocDEB, on 04/04/2008, -2/+10Coming soon the new Windows XP 2008 edition.
- robfrench, on 04/04/2008, -5/+13I'm sorry, but didn't everyone hate XP when it came out too? I'm not defending Vista or being pro-linux here, I'm just saying... when XP first came out, after the ME flop, didn't all "real" computer people hate it and say they would just stick to 98? I think its funny that everyone is singing XP's praises now.
- theaceoffire, on 04/04/2008, -1/+9That is why Microsoft hates it. Every new OS they make has to beat XP to be successful, and they did XP well.
- Kamujin, on 04/04/2008, -8/+16XP seems to serve a part of market and should not be scrapped.
Vista, however, was far more stable at release then XP was. - polywaffle, on 04/04/2008, -1/+9Not everybody has a 64 bit processor, although id say if you didnt you probably wouldnt be able to run vista too well anyway, so yeah not much point going 32 bit other than compatibility reasons. Still, I dont see why you think the 32 bit version is crap..its virtually the same thing as the 64 bit edition.
- grimward, on 04/04/2008, -6/+13Personally, I've tried installing their flagship, ultimate x64 SP1 over a myriad of different platforms, and I've yet to see any problems with either drivers or applications. However, what I *have* noticed is that pretty much all the other versions of Vista still suffers from driver issues, crashes and *****. I just hope MS pulls all their other crap versions of vista off the market and relaunches ultimate under a cheaper price to save whatever good-will the vista name still carries with it's brand.
- grimward, on 04/04/2008, -0/+7Actually, it's damned good from what I've seen so far (only application to fail so far has been peerguardian 2, and that's on account of their unsigned driver). But do tell, have you tried Vista Ultimate 64-bit with SP1 yourself?
- SillyRabbits, on 04/04/2008, -0/+7I have a suspicion that a lot of the people that are claiming it's crap are the ones that are having to learn how to do things a little differently (it's just human nature). All the workarounds and tricks they found over the years aren't applying to vista. Some people absolutely hate having to learn new systems. I probably never knew my way around an OS system as well as I did for Win2k (and of course DOS), and I just never had the desire to dig as deeply into XP to reach that level again. Since I'm not in IT it really doesn't matter how well I know my OS. However, I imagine there are people in IT that got very comfortable with XP over the years (just like I did with 2k), and really didn't want to have to work with something that functions a little different - because they don't know yet how to make it do the things that used to be easy for them. I understand that feeling, but just like you, I don't feel that makes Vista "shiat" either...
- haterofps3, on 04/04/2008, -1/+8Right instead they can be locked into a Mac(not that Macs aren't great but you are locked into what they want you to have not what you want to have), Linux is far more open but it is limited in another direction(publishers, corporate support)
If XP is done then we had better hope to god that Windows 7 is epic or that Vista can get its ***** together. - fuckingusername, on 04/04/2008, -5/+11this mean a service pack4 is in the works and possible DX10 support :)
- apzdsx, on 04/04/2008, -0/+6Just fine.
- andyduncan, on 04/04/2008, -0/+6Say what you want about Microsoft and Vista (and believe me, I have) but this is one of the reasons MS is so successful in the business world: Support for the product you're still using. Even before this latest Vista-inspired extension, MS's support for legacy products is a huge benefit to companies that have a lot of custom software that takes time and money to port/re-certify/deploy.
- noumuon, on 04/04/2008, -2/+8nobody cares about your observation, nor any other "front page with x diggs??! wtf!" comment.
- iticu, on 04/04/2008, -0/+6Wha- ?
Seriously, people on Digg are just as brainwahsed as everywhere else. It's getting kind of disheartening. =-| - chokeaduck, on 04/04/2008, -0/+6Dugg for great irony.
- digitalpencil, on 04/04/2008, -1/+6thanks for the news flash
- leerayIG88, on 04/04/2008, -0/+5*rabble, rabble, rabble*
- getliquified, on 04/04/2008, -1/+6I don't know why everyone is QQing. Vista has been nothing but good for me. If your pc can't handle it that's your fault. Don't buy it.
- lukemann, on 04/04/2008, -8/+13I'm using it for a HTPC. Everything installed with no issues, It was really quit painless. System stays on 24 hours a day so it can record TV. It hasn't crashed once. I actually tried to use mythbuntu first. Both the 32 and 64 bit installations locked up on the install. I had even bought a GeForce chipset motherboard so it would be "Linux Friendly". I think it must have been an issue with the sound card, but my time these days is more valuable then debugging this crap. Vista just worked.
- iticu, on 04/04/2008, -3/+8Anyone want to enlighten me why it isn't stealing? Seeing as though i'm getting dugg down for saying it is, there must be a reason.. ?
- zezerik, on 04/04/2008, -1/+6Ever use XP before SP1? Terrible. XP through patching has become a brickhouse OS. Very stable and extremely fast on even moderately quick hardware.
- tiuk, on 04/04/2008, -0/+5Nobody thought 98 was better. Many used 2000 instead, though.
