- kangy3213, on 10/01/2008, -8/+50they should get go karts
- lead2thehead, on 10/01/2008, -0/+39The only thing more annoying than those popups is trying to explain to my relatives that the popup window did NOT actually find any viruses on their computer.
- CDRrules, on 10/01/2008, -1/+34I never thought I'd say this, but Microsoft is doing the right thing. Good for them.
- Sakumi, on 10/01/2008, -0/+29When I was a PC tech (luckily I've moved on to software development.. ), I would remove these programs for consumers, just to be asked "Why did you remove this thing we paid for?". It's hard to tell grandma that she got had and the program was worthless.
- inactive, on 10/01/2008, -0/+22Look out, Peter Norton! The gig is up!
- Maxjan, on 10/01/2008, -3/+19and put flames on their programs.
- pablo0713, on 10/01/2008, -0/+14Hehehe, I just got paid $100 to remove Antivirus XP 2008 from my boss's laptop! lol
- noisey, on 10/01/2008, -3/+16Did you remove McAfee and Norton? - those are some of the most ridiculous scareware programs out there.
- Sparky9292, on 10/01/2008, -0/+8I always felt that many anti-virus companies like Symantec built their business model on scareware tactics. I'm not saying that AV software is bad, I'm just saying they love to hype virus threats much higher than reality.
- tripledjr, on 10/01/2008, -1/+9Yes I CAN...
... paint flames on programs.
Home key+ shift + mouse click = flames on programs.

compelled and obligated != scared. - minorgods, on 10/01/2008, -0/+7AntiVirus2008. the bane of my current existence. (which happens to be humbly de-lousing the computers of little old Jewish women)
- fr34k5h0w, on 10/01/2008, -0/+6Worse yet. I worked on a computer the other day because the person complained that her computer was running slow (she was under admin, first mistake but not my choice), so she thinks it's a virus. Turns out she has McAfee, Spybot, AdAware, ZoneAlarm, and the ZoneAlarm Antimalware program all running in the background.
- kaelyiesta, on 10/01/2008, -4/+10Wait, so where does god fit into this story?
- inactive, on 10/01/2008, -0/+6And thats why I love knowing just enough to do stuff like that for people. haha
- Murdats, on 10/01/2008, -1/+7by that token, what OS are you feeling compelled and obligated to use?
obviously no one just chooses according to your logic, everyone has a obligation to a certain company or some such - pintomp3, on 10/01/2008, -1/+6the dean at my school contacted the helpdesk because she was having trouble installing some windows scanner. thank god she didn't have admin access.
- czeman, on 10/01/2008, -0/+5Registry cleaners and Symantec/Norton products have to be tied for the title of "Worst Software Ever".
- db113456, on 10/01/2008, -0/+5Professor Norton did not do anything wrong here, The Norton Commander and subsequent tools have nothing to do with the other stuff slapped on by Simantec after he sold his business and went back to his atoms :-)
Does that date me ? - pintomp3, on 10/01/2008, -1/+6wouldn't that make OS X scareware, since they tell people windows is too dangerous to use?
- da_bradler, on 10/01/2008, -0/+5Hopefully Microsoft is including the worst scareware of them all. Norton anti virus, or rather anything with Norton in the name.
- necromancer, on 10/01/2008, -0/+5I think I am going to have nightmares tonight, thanks.
- twiztidsinz, on 10/01/2008, -1/+6I always liked Edward better..
- Ev3nt372, on 10/01/2008, -0/+5I profit from this type of *****. Also you can never underestimate the amount of crapware a PC came preloaded with. My fix will always be:
1: Backup My Documents
2: Nuke
3: Pave
4: Install Useful programs(Firefox,AVG,Foxit....) - jonesy827, on 10/01/2008, -0/+54chan sux
- Fixion, on 10/01/2008, -1/+6Registry Cleaner XP just found a ton of problems with my computer! What do I do now?
screenshot: http://i38.tinypic.com/jgu0bk.png - Murdats, on 10/01/2008, -0/+5yes, it is, and its awesome.
- fuzzynyanko, on 10/01/2008, -1/+5I remember trying to clean up a PC that a 4-year-old played around with, and I could tell that the kid tried to fix the slowness problems. Some of those shady programs were used.
- sockpuppets, on 10/01/2008, -1/+5I run the internet's only online puppet detection service. Is your computer infected by puppets?
- satanguy, on 10/01/2008, -0/+4good to see this is being chased up!
- psud0, on 09/30/2008, -9/+13These scareware sucks they should sue them. Here some info as well:
http://digg.com/microsoft/Microsoft_Washington_sta ... - twiztidsinz, on 10/01/2008, -1/+5I have a no kart :(
- aussieNickuss, on 10/01/2008, -1/+5Oh gawd...another meme in the making.
- inactive, on 10/01/2008, -0/+4Honestly if they spent more time worrying about these kinds of productive things, instead of features like Product Activation, their products would likely be much better.
- Seeknay, on 10/01/2008, -1/+5Good for Microsoft. I have to clean this stuff out for peoples computers all the time. This stuff can be very deceptive, and to profit off of other people in the way is horrible. I hope they take them all to court and sure for the max.
- bbrassi, on 10/01/2008, -1/+5My computer is fast, finally. Finally fast dot com!
- digudown, on 10/01/2008, -0/+3Wow, please share the secret with us!
- gcnaddict, on 10/01/2008, -0/+3Your friends should get go karts.
- AlienMushroom, on 10/01/2008, -0/+3Try BestBuy extended warranty. Found similarity?
- mentallyimprd, on 10/01/2008, -0/+3No....... Jesus, no.
- Sakumi, on 10/01/2008, -1/+4I have a go kart :(
- zantos420, on 10/01/2008, -1/+4how about you don't goto sites you don't trust and don't download ***** you don't trust. don't open spam emails. i've been running windows on my laptop with no anti virus protection software for almost a year now and have never once gotten a virus. i know this because i actively monitor the performance and keep an eye on the registry, processes, and running services.
- inactive, on 10/01/2008, -1/+4Frightening people in to buying stuff? if that was illegal then half of the advertisements on TV will be gone, and fox news.
more likely the government will give him a medal for adding to the general uneasiness or fear they like to foster. - inactive, on 10/01/2008, -1/+3i'm pretty sure you can't paint flames on programs
- gnixon70, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2In many ways the "legitimate" av companies are as bad as these people and I question how well they work anyway. If I had $90 dollars every time xp avtivirus 2008 or whatever the hell they called themselves today made Norton or mcafee their little bitch I'd be pretty rich right now.
I mean seriously, its been out for how long, and Norton and those guys can't even keep that crapware out of their customer's computers? - Swipecat, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2But God puts the words on the screen. He just makes it look as though technology does it as a test of faith.
- Elranzer, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2They already do.
- ilikedemoon, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2Thanks for the warning! I was starting to think 'registry cleaner' was a legitimate program!
- bjornski, on 10/01/2008, -1/+3Sorry you don't like it.
The other 80% of the market does. - xenofreak, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2Got that right, I hate trying to get the background image restored, and let alone the rest of the things it disables (folder options, desktop, control panel....)
