- VyPR, on 06/13/2009, -7/+211Comapnies are screaming about antitrust violations here, but really I see this as just an extension of OS patching. Malware is usually written around OS vulnerabilities, so why shouldn't MS be able to give this away if they choose? Anyone who ran 3.11 knows AV was built into the OS back then anyway.
- JYoungest1, on 06/13/2009, -19/+191I can not believe the extent people will go to make this a bad thing...
Its like no one will accept that this is an awesome step forward for the OS and something that should of been done since day one, and ***** all the "monopoly" *****. The EU needs to find the highest cliff and jump off because they are backwards money hungry ***** for telling Microsoft they cant include a browser. They better not do that with this. I just don't understand the liquid hypocrisy dripping off the Mac and Linux fanboys. We are never going to have ***** awesome computers because of STUPID ***** LIKE YOU!
/***** rant - CalcProgrammer1, on 06/13/2009, -9/+143While it is true that non-Windows OS'es don't get viruses anywhere near as much, Windows isn't exactly a virus magnet either. Almost all viruses involve some sort of "stupid user" input, either going to an untrusted page, downloading a questionable file, clicking on an unknown link, etc. Yes, there are a few that can attack a computer without any user input, but those are rare compared to the ones obtained through careless browsing. I've used Windows PC's for years with no virus software and haven't had a problem.
- brainboy7777, on 06/13/2009, -15/+127Wow, great job, Digg! Microsoft gives away free virus software, something that will help the consumers, and you've managed to turn that into a secretive, world-dominating plan. Great Job!
- Ouze, on 06/13/2009, -5/+110When Symantec sues over this (and they will), Microsoft should just buy them. Seriously, just send them a giant check, with the memo field scribbled in "You're all fired".
- vr121, on 06/13/2009, -15/+113its about time
- medj, on 06/13/2009, -12/+90I don't use antivirus software...
- chaos7, on 06/13/2009, -1/+55msft should merge this Morro program with Windows Defender
- JuanBSU, on 06/13/2009, -10/+64Yeah they do -- the owners.
- inactive, on 06/13/2009, -3/+52I know you guys might get angry and try to bury this comment, but even if a few of you guys are able to read this, then great.
It is a great thing that Microsoft is making free Antivirus software as the current commercial grade antivirus firms are running the largest scam on Earth. Who knows WHO is making the virii, but, since Microsoft not only wants to protect its brand/reputation but is also giving this software out FREE, we know that we are not getting scammed.
Yes, others with commercial interest may try to create more virii to sell antivirus software, but Microsoft will now fight for us. This is definitely a good thing.
Antitrust? No, as a matter of fact, this is BUILDING TRUST. - wlmafia, on 06/13/2009, -8/+56Why are you digging down? It is so true.
- Bovorik, on 06/13/2009, -9/+56"GOOGLE to give away anti-virus" - every interwebber and his dog creams their pants.
- CalcProgrammer1, on 06/13/2009, -2/+43While you all bury him I have to agree. Nobody's forcing you to use IE and if Microsoft wants to bundle it I don't see how that can be classified as a problem. If Honda wanted to include iPod docks in every single car they sold, most of you would classify that as a great feature. Yes, the people who make iPod docks for cars may suffer, but it is Honda's option to add what they want. Just because it's a big software corporation doesn't mean that the government can tell Microsoft not to sell the product that they want to sell.
Anyways, any reasonably smart user would ditch IE as soon as they install, only the stupid people stick with it. - staffell, on 06/13/2009, -2/+41YOU'RE.
YOU ARE.
***** HELL. - adjohnson916, on 06/13/2009, -4/+43The only reason other OS's don't get as many viruses is because of market share. Plain and simple. There are loopholes and ports in every internet-enabled operating system. Fanboism fails again.
- inactive, on 06/13/2009, -1/+37Agreed, and then just shut the place down and rid the world of one more crappy, bloated, resource-hogging virus scanner.
- heyimfromreddit, on 06/13/2009, -5/+34Uhh... how can you be sure?
- Po0py, on 06/13/2009, -2/+31Absolutly agreed. Too many knobhead fanboys on digg. They yell and scream about how superior they think Linux/Mac is every time someone finds vulnerability in a Microsoft OS but when Microsoft actually try to do something productive and improve security for their customers they all get cynical about it. I actually am really excited about what MS have been doing this last year. They really seem to be turning things around. A really impressive new OS on the way and now a free Anti-Virus. They really seem to get it, nowadays. Kudos to Mircrosoft.
@CalcProgrammer1: I would ditch IE too, as I think Firefox is far and away the better browser. But even IE 8 is a pretty solid and secure browser. It absulutly can hold it's own amongst Firefox/Opera/Safari. It's not like the old days where you wouldn't touch IE 5/6 with a barge pole. IE 8 is perfectly acceptable browser for regular use. - jeremymccurdy, on 06/13/2009, -2/+29Man the trolls seem to come out in droves any time the MS anti-virus is mentioned on Digg. Same old ***** comments like "They're making this because they don't want to patch their OS", "Avast is better, even though I haven't tried Microsofts anti-virus", and "Hurr Mac is better hurr".
At least get a bit more creative when you're slamming a company for giving out free software. Microsoft is no more the devil than Apple is. - str1fe, on 06/13/2009, -0/+25You can install all the virus protection you want, but you can't patch stupidity.
- scotttech1, on 06/13/2009, -4/+29no...where did you get that idea?

- evilspoons, on 06/13/2009, -1/+24Bahahahaha.
I would *pay* to see that - maybe they could include a video in a deluxe version of this antivirus program. - DeathMarcher, on 06/13/2009, -3/+24How naive.
- JYoungest1, on 06/13/2009, -2/+22By giving this away free, they are doing just that. The virus issues aren't in the OS, its in the stupid USER who downloads it and gives it admin rights.
- spiralspirit, on 06/13/2009, -2/+22so if GM gave you free oil changes for 5 years when you bought your car, jiffy lube should start suing like made.
- inactive, on 06/13/2009, -13/+33In the past five years I haven't used any protection aside from Windows Firewall. I create and update back-ups fairly often, maybe about once a month or so. I'm also intelligent enough to stay off of ***** websites and it probably helps that I don't use IE. That said, I've had maybe two serious virus threats where the damage to my file system was severe enough for me to go ***** it, its not worth the trouble. At that point, I just use my back-ups and cut my losses, which are fairly minimal because of how often I update them.
Human Intelligence > Anti-Virus Software - KibibyteBrain, on 06/13/2009, -1/+21They already do the malicious software removal tool, which is anti-virus. It just lacks the key feature of realtime protection. This may still be evidence in MS's support, in the way they can claim if there was a problem they should have been sued for the MSRT.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 06/13/2009, -2/+22If you have a thumbdrive you use in any public place, if you are not behind a router, if you are connected to any kind of larger LAN with unfamiliar systems and users on it, if anyone with questionable tech knowledge or experience uses your computer, if you download ANY kind of software from the internet that doesn't come from a major trusted source, you should be running some kind of anti-virus.
There is a trend among the supposedly tech savvy where some seem to believe they don't need to run anti-virus software because they are too good for it or that running AV somehow means you might not know as much as you say you do about computers. Considering the possibly serious implications of having a virus/backdoor/trojan on your system (data/identity theft), it seems pretty stupid to not simply play it safe and have that piece of mind sitting in the task bar just to grow your "epeen" a few centimeters.
People like Zephik blow my mind. Your system is devastated by a virus, something that very likely could have been prevented by decent AV software, MULTIPLE TIMES, and yet you insist that anti-virus software is superfluous. There's no doubt that maintaining a good backup is imperative, but, as I stated above, data loss isn't the only concern when it comes to viruses. Your system is getting infected, and you're letting it happen. Not every virus, especially those stealing your bank account information, is going to present obvious symptoms. Why NOT run AV? What is "intelligent" about that, exactly? - roxgod666, on 06/13/2009, -3/+22Best comeback ever.
- inactive, on 06/13/2009, -0/+17Bets 100 e-cookies that the EU will probably give microsoft crap about this too.
- yujie, on 06/13/2009, -11/+27I'll stick with Avira free till something better comes along
- MWeather, on 06/13/2009, -4/+20Yeah, virus writers just aren't interested in writing viruses for the millions linux web servers. They're waiting for it to get popular.
- InfiniteNothing, on 06/13/2009, -0/+14I'm not disagreeing with you but there's a virus going around work that spreads by USB drives. It might use the autorun feature of USB drives. Not sure. You wouldn't even know if you had it unless you didn't know what to look for. It might be a bot net sorta virus that spams people.
- dwhitbeck, on 06/13/2009, -1/+15It would be interesting to know how many people who blame everything on the stupid user actually have spyware or viruses on their own computer and are to stupid to realize it.
- constchar, on 06/13/2009, -2/+16"VIRUS DATABASE HAS BEEN UPDATED!!!!!!!!!!!"
- blankman, on 06/13/2009, -6/+19exactly. Too bad, in a "free" country, a company can't even do whatever they want to with their own product.
- Hamerhead33, on 06/13/2009, -0/+13but then you can't look at porn, the reason for the invention of high speed internet
- bigfatphony19, on 06/13/2009, -13/+26If you get a virus on any OS, you're a ***** idiot.
- wolfbane691, on 06/13/2009, -3/+16which comes to show how many people don`t care that much about Macs
- BalancingAct, on 06/13/2009, -27/+40You use a non-windows OS, right?
- Giever, on 06/13/2009, -0/+13I don't mind too much if Symantec gets bullied out.
- Hudon689, on 06/13/2009, -1/+13Wow. A sensible comment about Microsoft. I've been longing for this day!
Oh and I most absolutely agree with "They really seem to be turning things around."...Bing, Zune HD, Project Natal for xbox 360, Morro free anti-virus software, Windows 7...what's next?! - heyimfromreddit, on 06/13/2009, -1/+13Sounds like Xbox Live
- DuckSoup1, on 06/13/2009, -2/+13Because you can't patch "Stupid"
The majority of viruses come because of users stupidity. - JYoungest1, on 06/13/2009, -0/+11Thank god
- stuffradio, on 06/13/2009, -1/+12OH NOES, I HAZ TO USE IE FOR ONE MINUTE TO DOWNLOAD SOMETHING
- nephilimx, on 06/13/2009, -2/+12So if my gf downloads a butterfly wallpaper and it sends me a virus AVG doesnt know about via network, im a stupid idiot?
