- Bartboy919, on 11/01/2007, -15/+247Thank God Microsoft is updating the software in all devices making the 1 year old Zunes as functional sound as the New models. This makes me feel better as a consumer because I feel as if I am being supported even though I really am not buying anything new.
- manfrin, on 11/01/2007, -9/+138Looks like the Apple Brigade has been through here. You've been dugg down in a comment where you make a perfectly good, nonbiased, nonsided, rational statement, which just so happens to put Microsoft in a good light.
HOW DARE YOU SIR! - NerveBand, on 11/01/2007, -14/+138Holy *****, Wifi sync to the computer? Count me in! And they did remove the 3 day restriction so thats good (still kept the 3 plays only). AND NEW ZUNE SOFTWARE.
I seriously hope its better now.
And DRM free music to boost? Major love Microsoft. - ridestp, on 10/10/2007, -6/+73Microsoft cares about early adopters!! Rarely do you see any gadget get a firmware update to make a 1st gen product run the same as a 2nd gen. Big + to Microsoft!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -12/+74No, he was dugg down because the first comment is supposed to be ***** funny, not good, nonbiased, nonsided, and rational.
- MikeyisaFag, on 10/10/2007, -7/+64Wireless syncing? DRM-Free music store? Software upgrades for 1st-Gen Zunes? A step in the right direction I'd say. Still, without a price or size advantage compared to iPods, I don't think it will gain that much more acceptance.
- seanc6610, on 10/10/2007, -11/+60it kills me to say that i actually like this, it seems a lot more useful/practical than an ipod touch.
- Scruffydan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+48Thats the best part of the announcement. I wish apple did that for their iPods, but once a new version is out they pretty much stop developing any new software for the older devices.
Hell the new ipods (especially the 160GB classic) don't work with the ipod camera connector, which was extremely handy while travelling. Whats the point of having a universal connector if old addons dont work with newer models
It would be great if apple improved it's legacy support... oh well one can dream.
...end rant - quikboy, on 10/10/2007, -17/+59This is great news. Zune 2.0's really seem to be doing something.
I've always loved my v1 Zune for the fact that it had:
1. a bigger screen (awesome video watching!)
2. FM radio (listen to local news, win ticket concerts, new music, etc.)
3. WiFi (not used much, but first major one to introduce to the market)
4. changeable backgrounds (I always know which one is my Zune!)
5. durability (bye-bye flimsy breakable iPods)
6. scratch-less (compared to iPods, Zunes are practically scracthless)
7. lower cost (you get more bang for your buck!)
8. subscription music option (for those low on cash, and don't mind "renting" music
9. better integration with the Xbox 360
10. tons of other reasons
People laughed at it the 1st time, and I bet most iPod lovers never even tried it. So much for a "real" review.
These new Zune 2.0's actually look promising, and they really deliver this time. I'm happy. I'm so getting a couple for my friends when they launch. - NerveBand, on 10/10/2007, -6/+37Oh man, the software looks awesome. I'm so serious.

http://www.engadget.com/gallery/microsofts-new-zun ... - UnnDunn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+32This is normal. Flash memory is 10 times more expensive than a hard drive, byte for byte.
- Stevethegreat, on 10/10/2007, -8/+36You have to choose between iPod Classic and Zune 80, guess what's the better choice: Have the same price, same size, Zune has (much) larger screen that you can actually see video, non-DRM'd music, better headphones, wi-fi sync. Oh wait, I forgot, Apple gives you cover flow ....
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -9/+36Gee...spoken like a true pathetic Apple virgin fanboy. Any wonder why 95% of your diggs are for Apple?
- Scruffydan, on 10/10/2007, -6/+32Think Different = Do as Jobs says
- wazzledoozle2, on 10/10/2007, -9/+35Wireless sync to pc... yay.
This shall replace my 30gb 5g video ipod. - scandall, on 10/10/2007, -8/+33hopefully they have better luck with these than the 1.0's. I may pick one up if i ever have the extra cash. Everyone and their grandma has an ipod maybe with this we could "think different"
- zabaf, on 10/10/2007, -10/+35Support of H.264 is awsome. If h.264 is supported on the zune, maybe on xbox 360 media center soon :)
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+28i know the zunes are exciting, but im seriously eating the best ***** lasagna ever right now. you guys are heartless!
- Pic0, on 10/18/2007, -12/+34MS updates old zune's software when new zunes come out... AWESOME
apple doesn't give a ***** and lets the customers buy new ones to get the new stuff, ***** apple, buyers remorse +++ - lordtyros, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20The Zune marketplace offers both subscriptions (with DRM) and a la carte (e.g. iTunes). Only the latter will be getting DRM-free purchases.
And thanks to FairUse4WM's DRM-removal, it is currently possible to execute your dastardly scheme. - Shadez, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18wonder if they'll finally come out in Australia...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+20You will NEVER be able to legally give copies your songs to anyone you want. Get over the notion that you should be able to.
- DanH, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16that's not what that means, necessarily.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+20can you really retroactively change a product name? are all old ipods classics?
- chris86wm, on 10/18/2007, -4/+19"early Zune 30 adopters will have all the same software features as new Zune 80"
Hell yes! I'm so glad I ebayed my Ipod and bought a Zune - FXPooky, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14Err it's been supported since spring ;)
- AmazingAndrex, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15I agree, this was a huge factor in me buying an original: upgradable firmware.
- danwallace, on 10/10/2007, -8/+21The Zune 8 is $200 and the Zune 80 is $250? Are the hard drive ones that susceptible to damage?
- hotdamn, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16Dude, the little Zune's (1.8") have a smaller screen than the nanos (2.0")
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14why is this being dugg down? this man speaks the truth!
- yosempai, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14Hmmm. Where the hell did I put that USB cable?
- FoxRacR17, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13shut the ***** up, this is an mp3 player, not a PDA. I'm glad they didnt add any extra bloat like the ipod or even the iphone. To be honest if you need to bring the internet with you everywhere you go you need to get a life and/or a girlfriend. Why would you want to browse the internet on a freakin small screen with no mouse and no keyboard? It proves to just be annoying and cumbersome. I want my media player to play media, THATS IT.
Now they add the possibility to sync your library over wifi and you say "what a waste of wifi" Well i'll be laughing at you when you have to go across the house and plug in your uber cool ipod touch to sync you crap and all i have to do is have my zune on in my room and start the sync from across the house. Or even just walk in my house and have it automatically sync. Hardly a waste of wifi. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Steve Jobs "You're all individuals"
Adoring apple fanbots in chorus "Yes, we're all individuals" - lordtyros, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15Why would I buy an ipod touch when I can get a laptop that can actually display flash videos? Why would I get a laptop when I can get a desktop that can play Crysis? Why would I get a desktop when I can build a supercomputer that can ...
Some people just want to pay an appropriate amount of money for the device that does what they need. In this case, play mp3s and videos. Some of us don't want our web browser in our mp3 players. Expecially since we already have one in our phones, laptops, pdas, and whatever else. - Scruffydan, on 10/28/2007, -1/+12For me the killer feature of the tough is wifi web browsing... (which i am assuming these zunes dont have), the measly 16GB of space on the touch is what is keeping me from buying one though.
I would say that the zune will probable be better (assuming the software is good) for video than the nano or classic due to the larger screen. - lordtyros, on 10/10/2007, -7/+18As a 1st gen Zune owner, I feel this is the least they can do for the last 6 or so firmware update-free months. I wish they had a Brown V2, though.
- VulnoX, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14Those are pretty stupid examples when compared to wireless syncing and removing a sharing limit. I have a 5G iPod and I know the little "features" they added, and they are nice, like when you scroll it shows the letter of the artist/song/etc. But the Zune already did that. Its a small feature too.
They made the iPod compatible with the iTunes music store? WHOA! I mean Apple had nothing to gain from that so yeah they were so generous! - astrosmash, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Yes.
- lvlln, on 10/28/2007, -2/+12Well, they're two quite different devices. The Touch's claim to fame is the web browsing. The other stuff like video and music come second and are tacked on because they can be. The Zune's wifi isn't used for web browsing (which would suck without a touchscreen or QWERTY keyboard anyway), but merely to enhance its functionality as a PMP.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Does anyone know much about these "premium headphones"?
- macaddct1984, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Yup, all (full size) hard drive based iPods are now iPod classics.
Wikipedia has a big list of retronyms:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_retronyms - lordtyros, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Wow. Have you ever used a Zune? The V1 interface is leagues ahead of the new iPod one.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13You can pick up a 30gig Zune right now for something around $150. That's certainly a price advantage, and since the software/firmware apply to all zunes retroactively, you win on all fronts.
Sadly I agree. Most people don't even know what a Zune is...on my old campus the "white headphones" were sort of a status symbol (sadly...). Apple really knows how to get their PR going.
I own a Zune and love it (except for the software...which is finally going to be fixed with these updates...whooo!) - iofthestorm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Idiot, he's talking about the iPod classic.
- jwdav, on 10/10/2007, -5/+14USB has a theoretical speed of 480 Mbit/sec and a typical throughput close to 250 Mbit/sec
WiFi 802.11g has a theoretical speed of 54 Mbit/sec and a typical throughput close to 20 Mbit/sec
Bluetooth 2.0 EDR has a theoretical speed of 3 Mbit/sec and a typical throughput close to 2 Mbit/sec
Remind me again why I would want to sync wirelessly when I'm standing near my computer? It takes ten to twenty times longer and doesn't charge my battery.
- VulnoX, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Where are you seeing the battery life for the Zune 2?
And until you see one in person, not in pics, its hard to judge actual looks and feel. - zman14321, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Think different with a pmp from Cowon, the best sound quality players available.
- HUKI365, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Despite the "lols" I actually liked the look of the Brown Zune30 better than the Green of the Zune8. Oh well. black Zune 8 here I come.
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+7DivX/XviD are MPEG4-ASP (Advanced Simple Profile) codecs, meaning that not all MPEG-4 compliant devices will play them (I think). If the device supports ASP, then I guess it will work. It's unlikely that the Zune will play them, but we can hope. Either way, I'm pretty sure I'm getting a Zune 80 instead of the iPod Classic.
