- Gumboot, on 10/10/2007, -12/+83Some decent MS open-source projects:
* WiX
* IronPython
* IronRuby
* Paint.NET (written by MS employee, not an official MS project) - schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -27/+66With words like trashware, he doesn't sound like much of a gentleman and it isn't effective as an article. Maybe SJVN had a bad day, but either way, it's clear that when Microsoft says "open source" it tries to kill free software and have 'open source' that only integrates with Sharepoint, SQL Server, Windows, etc, i.e. it only serves Microsoft.
- xero040486, on 10/10/2007, -42/+75Buried as fanboy groupthink.
- mucnix, on 10/10/2007, -5/+28The ASP.NET Ajax Toolkit is fairly decent as well...
- Rossimo, on 10/10/2007, -8/+30To keep a fair balance, I wouldn't say everything on SourceForge is absolutely outstanding.
- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -11/+30The biggest problem with MS shared source is the various licenses where it says you can only run the code under Windows. Kind of defeats the purpose of FOSS.
- dattaway, on 10/10/2007, -15/+33Well, "trashware" does accurately describe the projects. Was the title misleading in any way?
- MasterRuthless, on 10/10/2007, -26/+42Kinda like 99% of the projects on SourceForge?
Gotta love fan boys... - evildemonic, on 10/10/2007, -5/+18He didn't say misleading. He sounded his opinion that using that term makes it an ineffective article. Although I agree with the article, I wish terms like trashware would be kept out, since it takes some of the credibility away and makes it sound like yet another tired M$-sucks-balls article.
- rebopper, on 10/10/2007, -21/+34FTA: "What a crock. Microsoft is open-source friendly in the same way that a butcher is friendly to a cow."
It processes the software into smaller more affordable portions after it has already been slaughtered/dispatched by a third party? Horrible analogy. - szembek, on 10/10/2007, -5/+17Direct link to Micorsoft's Open Source Project Directory: http://www.codeplex.com/Project/ProjectDirectory.aspx
- chrismgtis, on 10/10/2007, -37/+49Oh look, another bash Microsoft article written by a fan boy. Buried. I'm tired of the fan boys and their "trash articles". Just like anything very bias, it gets annoying.
- rb89, on 10/10/2007, -10/+21You people complain when MS releases closed source software because it's not open source. Then when they try to develop open source software, you complain that it's not open source enough for you.
- ZippyV, on 10/10/2007, -7/+18Maybe Microsoft doesn't want 200 Windows distributions.
- synx508, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14From the list, the Ajax Control Toolkit isn't junk. It occasionally fails to live up to the hype but doesn't every toolkit, framework or library? There's lots of useful and easy to use stuff in there. It's both mature and under active, open development.
Some of the other projects though, total junk, but they might inspire someone to do something better and while they're open and available that can only be a good thing, right? - TubaTechno, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12How did they do it wrong?
- xotx69, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9"Microsoft has released their Windows Installer XML (WiX) developer tool, Windows Template Library (WTL) and the FlexWiki engine under the CPL as Sourceforge projects."
Straight from wikipedia. I also happen to use WiX quite a bit. The guy that wrote this article didn't even both to do a 10 second search....and this guy writes for eWeek?!? What a terrible article full of wrong information. - semaja2, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13Last i checked Open Source just ment the source code was open to everyone to see and develop on, and never had anything to do with what OS it could run on or what frameworks it needed, thats like saying phpsysinfo is not opensource because it doesnt work on ASP.
This is clearly just bashful, and i hate Microsoft just as much as the next guy, but the fan boys need a lesson as well (THIS IS BS, The article is all BS IMO) - javaroast, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12AppArmor is GPL
- R3yDigg, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11Exactly, open source does not mean open platform.
- yutt, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10I think he meant that Microsoft isn't friendly to open source, you overly pedantic *****.
"He's saying Microsoft is a man named Steve who runs a shop down the street and offers discounts on beef on Thursdays? Terrible analogy!" - naio, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Nope, I disagree. NEXT?
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9first off, the list wasn't arbitrarily created. it was the 25 most active projects listed on CodePlex. how is that arbitrary? what would you instead use to get a good idea of MS's open source efforts? secondly, what does how long it's been around for matter? the point is, MS has been claiming to be a friend of open source, even sending their head of "open-source strategy" to speak at OSCON, claiming that they're committed to working with the open source community and that they've been "growing" the framework behind their open source initiative for 3 years.
for a software company with as much resources as Microsoft, and making such bold claims in the face of their actions to the contrary, the results that they have to show for their "commitment" to open source is rather sparse, as demonstrated in the article. if you have better examples of Microsoft's contributions to open source, then please by all means, share them with the rest of us, because i'm just not seeing it.
just because the article criticizes Microsoft doesn't make it FUD. the criticism is based on overwhelming evidence showing that Microsoft's open source efforts are nothing but a dog and pony show. i mean, c'mon, in 3 years all they could manage to put together was some sample code, a lackluster blogging CMS, and an obscure application based entirely on Vista-oriented proprietary languages and frameworks? i refuse to believe that a company with as much software development experience and resources as Microsoft could only come up with these pathetic excuses for FOSS software if they were truly committed to open source development.
sounds like you've just been drinking the MS kool-aid a little too much there, buddy. but hey, i might be mistaken. if so, please enlighten me as to Microsoft's real contributions to open source. i mean, Sun and IBM, both of whom are primarily hardware vendors, have a much longer and far more impressive list of open source contributions than Microsoft. Microsoft's open source software is simply a joke compared to these companies who are truly dedicated to open source. - elanders, on 10/10/2007, -5/+11How can one judge these simply by looking at their description? Try using the products before critiquing them. I have used one regularly, the ajax control toolkit for VS.net and it is very useful.
- Murdats, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7***** you and your list after list ***** spam site.
2 things.
1. we get enough legitimate lists without your spam lists.
2. I am quite intoxicated atm so please pardon the irrational rage (though he irritates me while sober) and my unusually coarse language. - craigpayne, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7People will always find a problem if its labeled Microsoft, maybe they should change there name?
- TubaTechno, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Hahah. Limited platform products like SharePoint? I make a living developing for SharePoint (2003 + 2007). SharePoint is a platform where you especially leverage it's existing features. With SharePoint 2007 using the ASP 2.0 framework, how exactly is it "limiting"?
- res2, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9another note: "ads" is spelled with one d.
- mohamedmansour, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9I agree to you. We should be HAPPY that there is that initiative of open source software. Why we need another blogging engine? Cause some people prefer ASPX than PHP. It is a matter of choice, instead of flaming these people, we should say good job for doing that initiative. I buried as well, since by just reading his blog post, he seemed like a complete noob and ignorant to accept the truth.
Maybe one day, Microsoft will open source something big, and they are on their way to that path. Remember, Microsoft's revenue is based on Selling Copies of Windows! (Main source). If they open source that, then thousands of employees will be jobless since INCOME < EXPENSES - TubaTechno, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6"MS open source project that is not redundant" - How many PHP forum projects are floating around the internet? Hmmmm.... I have a feeling you will ALWAYS bash Microsoft, even for Halo 3 somehow....
- KCorax, on 10/10/2007, -16/+21I find the whole concept of needing things to be open source (or free as most people care about) from top to bottom distressful. Most major OSS vendors package closed stuff with their products, eg Novell's AppArmor is protecting the linux system Im working on right now.
Software can be open even if it's a batch script running on DOS, wo why can't a 10.000+ lines of code project be open because it requires a foundation that is closed ? For god's sake what did they expect Microsoft to do ? Package the source code for windows with the project or develop it on Linux ?
The writer's thinking simply implies that Microsoft cannot do any kind of open source whatever unless they provide windows under the GPL. - roxya, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Microsoft do make a lot of good software. You're an idiot.
- MrSarcasm, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7ugh... another note: check is you can hotlink before submitting.
should work now: http://klaidas.lt/digg/adds/ - jameslj, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I have a MSDN subscription because quite frankly, thats the real business world for biztype apps. The msft dev tools are outstanding though. Best thing they have going in my opinion. Although, VS 2005 has some annoying bugs and it looks like VS2008 inherited them.
- KCorax, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Btw the BlogEngine.net thing is valid xhtml transitional http://rurl.org/85k , Google's blogger for fakesteve generates 699 errors http://rurl.org/85l . It doesn't seem too trashy to me.
- ZippyV, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9Looks like the writer of the article doesn't know that most of those projects are not created by Microsoft.
- JQP123, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8"Trashware" is an apt description for this and many other SJVN's articles in my opinion. The sole contribution of this piece is the trashing of MS, as if we really need more of this.
- yutt, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AppArmor
http://en.opensuse.org/Apparmor
"These packages are all licensed GPL2." - sameeraperera, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6And there's WTL
- TubaTechno, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8Ah yes the true Linux fanboy smack talk. However, while *nix (NOT Linux) is still used as major back-ends for "big business", Microsoft products are used daily for other major roles in the business. E.G. Payroll, timesheets, accounting, etc. For some to state taht Linux can do EVERYTHING that Microsoft does and if you can't do it with Linux you should do it, is to be an ass. Get into the real world and you'll find Microsoft everywhere. Why? Because it works, and it works well.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4i thought paris hilton had an exclusive right to the title trashware.
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4because having ethical standards suddenly diminishes your credibility? our city has a single walmart store but in the past 4 years have successfully prevented the construction of 2 new walmart stores in our city limits--though not just for ethical reasons, but also for the well-being of our residents and our local economy. i'm quite proud of our city officials and the residents here for standing up to the Walmart corporation. Walmart is a despicable company and more and more people are realizing it. your being completely clueless or apathetic doesn't somehow discredit others for being better informed and more socially conscious than you.
- fatdog789, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I've read Eweek. There's no polite way to put it...they're junk.
- FredFredrickson, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4"anything worth anything gets shrink wrapped and sold."
And you guys begrudge them for selling products... honestly, I will never understand this. You'd be doing the exact same thing if you were in their position. - keyboardduder, on 10/10/2007, -22/+25well, if Microsoft cant even do windows right (vista), then why should they even bother on something they are completely out of touch with?
- SpyDerMann, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3#1. It's not that. I am a Windows user, but not a HAPPY user. So why don't I switch? Because many things in Linux suck. So, here I am, trapped in Windows because NOBODY CAN IMPROVE IT. Microsoft gets the exclusive right to improve it. I can't. I can't get rid of their stupid number-of-installs limit whenever I upgrade my hardware, I can't get rid of their genuine advantage crap. I can't even increase the number of maximum TCP connections for my p2p apps, without resorting to downloading patched files.
#2. This isn't about Windows. This is about Microsoft's intention to portray itself as "open-source friendly", when in fact it's the opposite. - init100, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5We do, as a balance to all the "We all love Microsoft" articles.
- Darcy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3An open source fan angry with Microsoft, this must be a first.
- TubaTechno, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Most of these projects are for the professional developers, not regular Gimp users.....
- Grimboy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I don't think bashful means what you think it means.
