- byronm, on 10/11/2007, -6/+17Tell me about it. The 360 alone has matured to something not just friendly to use but enjoyable. I've sort of grown addicted to Marketplace downloads and the quality beats that of Cable/On Demand. Will be interesting to see if anyone jumps on there iptv platform or if they license it to subscribers who aren't bound by last mile monopolies.
- lordtyros, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Windows MCE >> everything you just named.
- Ignathius, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8MGS revolutionized online gaming? LOL
show me 1 game (besides possibly counterstrike) that has had over 8 million players. WoW brought in *everyone*, not just geeks and niche markets. WoW did to MMO's what the Wii did to consoles. - mikeruiz7, on 10/11/2007, -5/+12I'll stick with Mediacenter and BitTorrent, but thanks.
- jonstafari, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I agree with you; the 360 market place can compete, and in some cases exceeded the content available through "On Demand" (I presume you're a Comcast custy). I was a little apprehensive about the 360 marketplace at first, but after a few weeks of downloading and such, I realized it's way ahead of some, if not most cable providers. Sure, it's lacking a few features, but it's really well put together, easy to use and understandable to most non-tech people. The major "1 up" I notice is the ability to KEEP what you download, where as a Comcast type of "On Demand" service only lets you "Rent" your content. Sure, you have to pay for all the micro-transactions through Marketplace, however, being able to keep what I downloading (and for roughly the same price) is much more appealing to me than "renting" it.
Another interesting thought that was left out of this article would be the 3rd party applications that can act as a media gateway between devices. TVersity being one that I thought would be on the list. Check it out: http://www.tversity.com/home -- Add TVersity and a 360 and it's a rather impressive system to use. You can stream webcasts and youtube, plus your standard media sharing that's with MP11. But the kicker, and the key, is that you can stream AVI and other movie files. With MP11 and just a 360, that's impossible. I'd HIGHLY recommend TVersity if you're really interested in getting the most "Media Center" functionality without the cost of new systems, products, etc. - MWeather, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Or via Mediacenter ( or your app of choice) and your PS3, which then wirelessly transmits to your PSP, which can now be hooked up to yet another TV.
- SirBotchness, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Never heard of any of those things you listed, so i guess you're right, tons of excitement there.
- MWeather, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4"WoW did to MMO's what the Wii did to consoles."
Dumbed them down to the lowest common denominator? - sammykeyes, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Have you even used Windows Media Center? Seriously. It's even better than Apple TV
- toxicityj, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I'm going to go ahead and assume you've never felt the satisfaction of watching that porno you downloaded onto your PC via your TV thanks to Media Center and XBOX 360.
- cplusplus, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Sorry but the last thing I want is more Microsoft!
- DrDabbles, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Marketing fluff heavy, but...this is the concept we've been waiting on since 1995/6. The idea isn't new with the 360, Zune, or Windows Vista. But, it's becoming harder and harder for cable companies to keep these devices out of our homes. Someone needs to break the ground and Microsoft has been poised to do it for a long time. They have had their own IPTV architecture and "broadcast" services for a very long time, and those that have seen them in person (such as myself) have been desperate to get a unit in their own homes.
Now, lets all hope that when MS breaks through, Apple and the other alternatives won't be far behind. - FredFredrickson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3WoW is a niche market of 20 million, huh? Why don't you try learning about the industry before acting like you know it all already.
- byronm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3MS doesn't have to beat the "torrent-channel" as you can play your torrents on the microsoft products anyway.
- jonstafari, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3ah, yes.. Mediacenter and Bit Torrent.... good combo! Mediacenter does play AVI and other movie files to the 360, which is key
- ryanspahn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I prefer PC hooked up to large cheap LCD TV... use mouse gestures and handle held gyration mouse to enjoy the net and all it's content from 10 feet.
- OBKenobi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2
But MGS/Halo 2 revolutionized online gaming.
What was so revolutionary about those games? They were a step down from multiplayer PC games. Only a console gamer could be impressed by them. - leo78, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3While Mediaroom sounds cool. As long as it's attached to AT&T I won't even consider it.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2He is trying to say he is jealous that he cant afford an XBox 360.
- toxicityj, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2oh. Well I can't blame him.
- Eclipse19, on 10/11/2007, -7/+8Honestly folks come on..... I'm by no means a M$ fanboy and have used Linux for several years. But MGS/Halo 2 revolutionized online gaming. Sure, Warcraft and WoW was big among geeks and other niche markets, but the XBox brought online gaming into the homes of normal people.
I just happen to be in a struggle right now for a DVR. MythTv is great, after you get it working. All the open source glory! But I have to have a full blown machine for the backend and at every TV. I think Microsoft is on to something here, especially with the 360. - dan90251, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Well here in the UK Sky+ seems to be leading the market with a simple PVR. Most people I know are buying cheap PVR systems. Xbox 360 does show a lot of promise if it weren't so loud. I would hope that the next router I buy will have all the key features of Windows Home Server, essentially a hard disk and backup utils.
For me I want something as simple / small and quiet as AppleTV (open source preferred) that can download video podcasts / youtube and episodes off the numerous UK TV sites (4OD, BBC, Channel5 all seem to want you to go to there sites I just want to download from them to my simple TV player). - toxicityj, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3what the ***** are you talking about?
- piratearggghhh, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5What I'm looking forward to is the home media server -- assuming it works as advertised. That can mean TBs of data that can stream wirelessly that can be stored away and with minimal configuration. But as of right now, this strategy is way too complicated with too many elements for the average person.
- quikboy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I agree with you. I used Apple TV and it was really disappointing.
- toxicityj, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1nvm. I misread what you said. That'd be pretty cool too.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Oh please.
You've obviously never used Windows Media Center (Especially on Vista.) - kingmoffa, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1agreed. it is far 2 loud.
- iplayyouandme, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What can we expect in the future? A continued string of failures.
They have yet to turn a meaningful profit from anything besides Windows & Office, for what, 20 years! Promises, promises, a new buzz word for a vaporware product every year, those that make it like the Xbox or Zune only drive Microsoft further into the RED.
What do all of those products have in common besides the Zune, they run Windows. Everything is Windows repackaged.
Microsoft is a failure in the consumer space and is bleeding money to show for it. Personally, I don’t want Windows anywhere near my TV.

- vypergts, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Orb FTW.
- dpw45, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4An great read, and interesting view on Microsofts future in home entertainment. Dugg!
- yournamehere, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1if your 360 is too loud i dare say your surround sound must suck.
- toxicityj, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1OR not.
- crossers, on 07/16/2008, -0/+0 They’ve been poised to do this now for years.

http://www.chasr.org/ - sammykeyes, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3I've been using AT&T U-verse (based on Microsoft's IPTV platform) and it's awesome. Seriously. Better than what other digital cable services have right now. The menus are done much more quicker and slicker. It loads up fast and there's little lag (on a very good connection) and it just works so much better. You can even save TV shows on AT&T's own built-in DVR. It's a serious competitor to Comcast, DirecTV and other services.
If IPTV is this good, then Microsoft really has something here. Its like Digital TV of the future. It's that good. - masskurec, on 03/04/2009, -0/+0microsoft should be left in the past
http://xptweak.net - EEdesigner, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Hmmm, if Microsoft can manage to have their (inevitable) crashes only during commercials, they might (for the first time) actually produce something new, different, and desirable.
- insanebrain, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0why ?? MS is never able to beat the torrent-channel
- ps3udov3ctor, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2part one was not "featured" on digg last week. it was submitted and dugg up. it was featured on the site that is doing a multi-part series on this subject. nothing is "featured" on digg.
- chris9902, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Still waiting for all/any of this outside the USA.
- Icecream, on 10/11/2007, -6/+5MY EYES IT BURNS
- kurupttek, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3I guess its ok i mean i got all that crap and I still dont use it But MS you get an A for affort
- insanebrain, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1boooooooring
- OBKenobi, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1Bomb Microsoft.
- scronline, on 10/11/2007, -12/+3Except it will crash like none other. It will reboot because of updates during a recording/viewing. It will phone home what you watch and when. The DRM will prevent you from watching what you want when you want, unless, of course, you crack it which is apparently no difficult matter.
No thanks MS. I'll steer clear of your products whenever possible. It's bad enough we have people like Rupert Murdock running Fox and spreading massive amounts of disinformation, we don't need MS joining the fray with Monkey boys at the helm. "GIVE IT UP FOR ME!!!!!!!!" - GoodDamon, on 10/11/2007, -13/+4You have got to be kidding me... What MS fanboy/astroturfer came up with this crap? It's written like it was lifted from a press release.
I don't have a problem with Microsoft, but they're by no means the innovators of anything interesting -- or popular -- in the television industry. MythTV, DemocracyTV, homebrew PVRs, and open standards are where the excitement is at right now.
