- brownytravis, on 04/24/2009, -1/+46Some unstated info: This is the first drop in quarterly revenues since Microsoft went public 23 years ago.
- DRT23, on 04/24/2009, -51/+83Digg me up if you love Bill Gates
- macslut, on 04/24/2009, -8/+29I don't love Bill Gates, but I do admire and respect him. I certainly appreciate the Gates Foundation.
I can't stand Ballmer. He both scares and disgusts me. - gcnaddict, on 04/24/2009, -3/+21They still recorded strong profits, so none of this really matters. It's just a sign that people are starting to hold off on buying computers at the moment (even Apple saw this. Most of their high margins came through software sales for computers already in the hands of users). Keeping in mind that a hefty chunk of Microsoft's profits come from OEM sales, this drop makes sense.
To those who think this is the demise of Microsoft, keep in mind that Microsoft has more money banked than most software companies combined. No one will be laid off and nothing will change; life moves on. - maikrosaft, on 04/24/2009, -7/+22They can start by lowering the price of their goddamn software. For the first time in my life I wanted to pay for a windows software, got to the store and was told to pay 540 $ + Tax for an ultimate version of Vista. Who the hell can pay that much when some of us hardly even have a job? Keep that price and you'll see more decline.
- lordmike, on 04/24/2009, -5/+20If they were any other company they'd be out of business after their Vista disaster... They are lucky to have so much unthreatened market share and tons of reserve capital... It's about the only thing keeping them in business. If someone actually seriously threatened their monopoly, they probably would be hurting worse than this... Maybe, they will use this as an impetus to turn things around... After all, IBM's first loss 15 years ago sure woke them up!
- HelplessSEAL, on 04/24/2009, -4/+17Well, it's not like they're pushing any ultra revolutionary products right now, business or consumer...
- strangewill, on 04/24/2009, -6/+18Because 88% market share is a horrible stance?
Anyway W7 shows that they're already going to do a 180. - clickmyface, on 04/24/2009, -7/+18Come on, thats *****. OpenOffice is bloated and frankly does not run very well for many users.
- SkunkWORK, on 04/24/2009, -0/+11CocaCola:)
- Cypher19, on 04/24/2009, -1/+9Uh, that store was ripping (well, going to rip) you off. Even for the non-upgrade version, it's "only" 290 on newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 ... (the upgrade version is 215).
- SkunkWORK, on 04/24/2009, -12/+20What a shocker. Microsoft reminds of me of an ANGRY company that copies what everyone else does, screws over it's own customers by selling software that's insecure and full of bugs, tells you to buy Vista when they're openly developing Windows 7, and bashes the little guy for trying to be innovative like Apple... all with the expectation and mentally that they will continue to be the industry because people are still using XP.
Well times are changing and MS hasn't really innovated crap in the past 10 years. They're just a software company that got lucky really and now they're true colors are coming out. It amazes me how a company like Apple that was about to file for bankruptcy in the mid 90's has made such a strong impact in the last decade.
Whose to say google won't start making their own computers targeted towards the business world which I'm sure has been discussed or could be under development. I mean 80% of the world uses Google for search so why the F not. Anything is better then XP. As for me, I would buy a product of quality over price any day whatever it is.
When you buy cheap stuff you end up paying for it in the long run and that's what you get with MS/PC. I've been screwed over by MS long enough to know their not going anywhere and eventually they'll die out. - Samueul, on 04/24/2009, -1/+9MS made 13+ billion. Apple made 8+ billion, largely due to iPhone sales. Kudos to them, they made about half as much as MS but because of totally different markets. If you compared iPhone sales to MS phone sales, or Zune sales to Ipod sales, then hell yes they kicked ass....
MS software sales for PC was down roughly 9% and their Xbox360 sales were up 30%.
Apple's Mac computer sales were down 3%
Both companies are weathering this recession just fine, but comparing one to the other is really apples and oranges. MS sales primarily software to the market. Apple sells primarly hardware. Their software sales are targeted mostly to their hardware products.
To assume that Microsoft is being toppled because of these reports is just plain retarded... Especially when you take into consideration their capital and the fact that they are still making a huge profit year over year..... - strangewill, on 04/24/2009, -2/+9"The PC market did not drop 32%. "
Considering that Microsoft's LARGE orders are companies, and companies are making huge cutbacks, I wouldn't be surprised. - mithrasinvictus, on 04/24/2009, -0/+6He wasn't a big fan of OLPC though.
- modnar, on 04/24/2009, -6/+12Wow...that's actually not as bad as I expected; a 6% decline is reasonably small, considering the circumstances. Of course, Apple is up 15%, but that's only to be expected (iPhone...'nuff said).
- overnine9k, on 04/24/2009, -6/+12This is because they spent all their money fixing the faulty Xbox360s.
- jakem1, on 04/24/2009, -0/+5He's Canadian.
- mrBitch, on 04/24/2009, -2/+7Hi, I'm a PC... and I don't make Microsoft as much money as I used to...
- chicagospur, on 04/24/2009, -1/+6"It amazes me how a company like Apple that was about to file for bankruptcy in the mid 90's has made such a strong impact in the last decade."
The $100M that Microsoft invested in Apple stopped them going under. - clickmyface, on 04/24/2009, -1/+5it's the loss in net income thats staggering.
- inactive, on 04/24/2009, -1/+5 Why can't you say Linux instead of Ubuntu? Ubuntu is not the only version of Linux on the planet.
- dontreplytome, on 04/24/2009, -1/+5@mrBitch ... er, no ... barely any connection at all. Did you take econ classes at Sears?
- clickmyface, on 04/24/2009, -2/+6err, their net income dropped 32%. The PC market did not drop 32%. This does not make sense, at least according to your logic.
- duckyinc, on 04/24/2009, -6/+10Yup and I bet other tech companies made some losses too, then again if people have less cash that's what happens.
- matt247, on 04/24/2009, -5/+9That's still a lot of money
- wilhoitm, on 04/24/2009, -0/+4It is hard to believe but Apple is worth only 72 Billion less than Microsoft. Microsoft 183 Billion vs. Apple 111 Billion
- Soragon, on 04/24/2009, -4/+8I don't love him but I do admire his dreams of having a computer on every desk etc etc.
- kolobcreek, on 04/24/2009, -0/+4Numbers should not be used by armatures. That's what happens when people hate your current os and are waiting for you to release your new one.
- waynehoggett, on 04/24/2009, -0/+4**** Apple and their *****, I mean seriously.. "Currently available notebooks", next they'll charge iPod users for the ability to copy and paste...
- mithrasinvictus, on 04/24/2009, -2/+5Drjekel, usually because people keep sending you files you can no longer open.
- quarando, on 04/24/2009, -1/+4An 'angry' company? Do you mean everybody who works for Microsoft is angry? Or when they come together collectively and make software, somehow that software seems angry?
It's just that, typically people don't use a word like 'angry' when describing a multinational corporation. - maumac, on 04/24/2009, -0/+3I heard they like 360s more...
Somehow they got convinced it's the same as moving forward! - gamepr0, on 04/24/2009, -1/+4on windows it's great,
office for mac is pretty bad but that's only normal.
mac/linux users can blame microsoft for making a bad OS, but I'd never say they make bad office applications because they still make the best I've seen so far. - dontreplytome, on 04/24/2009, -3/+6That's because you're a Mac user. You'd have trouble with a new toaster.
- Samueul, on 04/24/2009, -3/+6Dude, enough! You're obviously biased as *****. The only thing that held Apple's head above water was ipod/iphone sales... Their computer department suffered greater loses than MS. Both companies made profit just not as much as the previous year.. Apple DOES NOT sell software that runs on stuff that got hit...not by a long shot, when compared to MS which IS A SOFTWARE COMPANY.
- inactive, on 04/24/2009, -0/+3It's $319.99 at Best Buy.

That's as much as some netbooks cost! - CCmachined, on 04/24/2009, -0/+3@drjekelmrhyde
How about Incompatible ***** File Formats
Use OpenOffice. - mrBitch, on 04/24/2009, -3/+6@ strangewill, RE: "Because 88% market share is a horrible stance? "
Have a look at Nokia's market share, then take a look at Nokia's massive drop in revenues.
Market share doesn't stop you from falling over, it just makes the fall a lot harder. - rimantas, on 04/24/2009, -0/+3@Samueul:
"Both companies made profit just not as much as the previous year." That's not correct. MS made less. Applle had a record non-holiday quarter in its _history_.
It is true Mac sales were down this quarter, but " Their computer department suffered greater loses than MS", huh? Loses? Greater than MS? Greater than MS what, computer departament? MS makes computers now? - chalkboy, on 04/24/2009, -0/+2For something that is free it is not successful.
- MicrosoftBob, on 04/25/2009, -0/+2Walmart.
- rimantas, on 04/24/2009, -1/+3One tech company which has a name of a fruit just announced record non-holiday quarter in its history.
- inactive, on 04/24/2009, -0/+2$14.15 billion and they need to lay off people?
This just seems dead wrong to me. - InorganicMatter, on 04/24/2009, -2/+4Hopefully this encourages them to get Windows 7 out the door sooner.
- Chrysalii, on 04/24/2009, -4/+6and Linux can be a bitch to use.
- natenovs, on 04/24/2009, -0/+2heh. bounced today! dont forget the system center suite. that stuff is invaluable to an it department.
- Samueul, on 04/24/2009, -0/+2Did you not even read my comment?! what part about "compared Iphone sales to MS phone sales" did you not understand?
- InorganicMatter, on 04/24/2009, -0/+2When has 99% of the population EVER gone into a store, bought Windows off the shelf, and installed it on their computer?
Most people think the OS comes built into their Apple/Dell/HP at the hardware level, like a firmware or something. It's why boxed retail copies of Windows never sell well. (And it's also why Linux will never be successful on the desktop.) - modnar, on 04/24/2009, -3/+5Er wait...first EVER drop in quarterly sales revenue? Never mind, that's bad. At least it's not more, though.
