- inactive, on 04/29/2008, -5/+162I have no idea... I'm pretty drunk.
- krystalo, on 04/29/2008, -13/+120No it isn't required. SP3 can be installed on a clean XP install.
- l0k0, on 04/29/2008, -3/+85The only issue I've come across is that custom themes (visual styles, mss styles, etc.) don't work with SP3. The fix is quite easy though. Get a new hacked uxtheme.dll here:
http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=63 ...
and use replacer to swap in the new system file:
http://www3.telus.net/_/replacer/
So if you don't use the default blue, silver, or olive scheme, you're going to need to do this to get your custom themes working again for SP3. I'm willing to bet there will be a new installer soon, but for now you'll have to use replacer. - coldpockets, on 04/29/2008, -3/+84Ubuntu themed avatar: Yes

Digg: Yes - inactive, on 04/29/2008, -2/+64That's Office, not Windows. You fail at trolling.
- inactive, on 04/29/2008, -43/+102Which is shortly followed by Windows XP SP3 REV A. Version II, Type 3 Niner
- Evildudetx, on 04/29/2008, -0/+46Your IT department must really suck. XP has been unbelievably stable.

- inactive, on 04/29/2008, -5/+48sticking with SP2 for now. dont really know whats in store for the move over yet. hopefully there isnt more useless services to disable
- hobbers, on 04/29/2008, -8/+51From the article: "Every service pack Microsoft releases is cumulative, meaning it is possible to install just SP3 on a clean install of XP (or slipstream it right into the original media)."
From microsoft.com: "Windows® XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes all previously released updates for the operating system."
You sir are retarded. - jull1234, on 04/29/2008, -2/+44you downloading this over a walkie talkie?
- c_starfish3, on 04/29/2008, -1/+42good work
- Gir53457, on 04/29/2008, -5/+42Shouldn't you already have SP1/2?
- inactive, on 04/29/2008, -2/+31no, just all the other crap from apple.
- pojut, on 04/29/2008, -1/+28To be fair, this happens with Ubuntu (which can be the only OS you are talking about) for a pretty good reason. The first number is in relation to the year it was released, the second and third numbers relate to the month it was released.
Hence, 8.04 was released in the fourth month of 2008. - inactive, on 04/29/2008, -7/+33We all know Vista sucks dude, pointing that out isn't cool anymore, even less coming from someone who has the word Mac in its username...
- HoratioHellpop, on 04/29/2008, -1/+25Ubuntu users need to drink, to deal with their OS.
- Jareth86, on 04/29/2008, -6/+29Seriously, how much does Microsoft pay you?
- Nomad83, on 04/29/2008, -3/+25Ironic timing...this hits the front page just as I see this come up on my RSS: (via www.gottabemobile.com) The software maker said there is a "compatibility issue" between the XP service pack and Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System, a retail chain management program for small and midsize businesses. Microsoft finalized the code for Windows XP SP3 last week and had planned to make it broadly available starting Tuesday. "In order to make sure customers have the best possible experience, we have decided to delay releasing Windows XP SP3 to Windows Update and Microsoft Download Center," the company said in a statement. The glitch also exists between Microsoft Dynamics RMS and Windows Vista Service Pack 1, though that product has already been broadly released. Microsoft started pushing out Vista SP1 last week via Automatic Updates.
- terajoule, on 04/29/2008, -0/+22LEAVE SEARCH DOG ALONE!
- Tarale, on 04/29/2008, -9/+30About time.
Now I just wonder how long it will take before work starts to implement it / we start seeing weird problems with it and specially customised software. - jull1234, on 04/29/2008, -2/+23a snuke, perhaps.
- CrimsonBlur, on 04/29/2008, -3/+23Did I catch a 'niner' in there?
- Nougat, on 04/29/2008, -1/+20So whose responsibility is it to make sure the "specially customized software" works with the operating system? Microsoft is supposed to have an individual debugging session with every company or person who might be running every software package ever developed?
When software operates unexpectedly after an update, it is the responsibility of the developer of the software to modify the software to match the operating system with update. - uhdean, on 04/29/2008, -2/+21At least SP1 is required. I just tested this and confirmed it. On a clean install of XP it displays the following message:
Service pack 3 Setup Error:
Setup has detected that the version of the Service Pack installed on your system is lower than what is necessary to apply this hotfix.
At minimum, you must have Service pack 1 installed.
"You sir are retarded". Maybe you should confirm and verify things before you call someone out. - Ndiggnation, on 04/29/2008, -1/+20As one who supports both systems, you're absolutely right. Applce breaks something with just about every OSX release/update. For us, it's usually something important relating to Appletalk or working with file servers..
- InorganicMatter, on 04/29/2008, -15/+33Hey, it's better than increasing your version number by 0.6 every six months, rehashing new crap, and calling it the next big OS.
- dtfinch, on 04/29/2008, -0/+18Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System
- ZippyV, on 04/29/2008, -0/+17Because they share the Win2003 server codebase. You will have to wait until they get a SP3.

Windows XP SP4 Turbo: Championship Edition: The New Service Packs - Gir53457, on 04/29/2008, -5/+19I prefer windows.
- t22design, on 04/29/2008, -7/+21http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx? ...
Delayed because of a conflict with Microsoft Dynamic RMS. - jull1234, on 04/29/2008, -2/+16its nothing new, dude. (new version, yes, but who hasn't replaced their uxtheme.dll once or twice since 2001)
- inactive, on 04/29/2008, -11/+25You have been dugg down for disagreeing with the Digg hive-mind on Vista.
kind of sad. if you want to be popular just say "vista sucks boooo!! i love apple and steve jobs" - montroller, on 04/29/2008, -1/+14I wish I could digg you down more now...
- inactive, on 04/29/2008, -2/+15They didn't bork it. Its just that they dont want your average joe to mess around with stuff like this because those themes can alter your ui in a dramatic way.
- aidave, on 04/29/2008, -2/+15Fresh install of XP may not have SP1 or SP2.
- KraftDinner101, on 04/29/2008, -3/+16Buy it.
- therightclique, on 04/29/2008, -1/+14yeah. i was pretty concerned until he said that.
- v0lrath, on 04/29/2008, -1/+14Judging by you being dugg down and BeeArePro being dugg up, I would say nobody gets it, so it's not funny anyway.
- inactive, on 04/29/2008, -6/+18A word to the wise... hold off on installing this for a few weeks... Installing service packs the day they are released can be worrisome. I always wait a while and let the rest of the planet test it out... then if no problems arise... proceed accordingly. You can apply this same rule to M$ operating systems too.
- DyceFreak, on 04/29/2008, -1/+13good luck with that! the update seems to take less time than SP1-2 though...
- Nomad83, on 04/29/2008, -1/+13http://www.news.com/8301-13860_3-9931343-56.html
- BXRWXR, on 04/29/2008, -5/+17Please be so kind as to remove your head from your ass. It's embarrassing.
/Get it?/ - gh0st3000, on 04/29/2008, -3/+15If it was so archaic and useless, why would anyone be fighting to keep it alive over a year after vista's come out? I don't have a problem with vista, i like several of the new features (independent volume control FTW), but as a gamer, I couldn't stand the noticable performance downgrade that came with it. Also, DX10 is a little shinier, but other than the nicer water effects, the improvements don't make a very big difference, not big enough to sway me yet.
