- mofw, on 09/07/2009, -23/+255Windows 7 FTW
- RANDOM667, on 09/06/2009, -12/+183I installed the beta of Windows 7 64bit a month ago, I have had no problems with hardware or software compatibility during that time.
So, I completely dumped XP last weekend. - GeorgeWKush, on 09/07/2009, -18/+175"...from my cold dead hands."
- FDisk, on 09/07/2009, -9/+144If there are more then 4 characters after the word "Windows" it's going to fail.
Windows 98 = Win
Windows 2000 = Win
Windows Millennium = Fail
Windows XP = Win
Windows Vista = Fail
Windows 7 = Win - gcnaddict, on 09/07/2009, -22/+129It's about time, too. Vista was a good OS, but the negative hype stained it for good. Thankfully, Windows 7 got tons of positive hype from the start, so XP will finally start to vanish.
- EnTaroTassadar, on 09/07/2009, -4/+109I've not seen a laptop sold with 512 MB in ages. I was at Walmart the other day and was looking at their notebooks. 2 GB was the minimum for anything they had. And that's bottom-of-the-barrel Walmart for crying out loud.
- BaconGod, on 09/07/2009, -2/+54After getting Windows 7 it blew my mind how archaic XP is. Some might disagree but If only it had Spaces, Expose, and built in VNC I could seriously drop my mac.
- glitchbit, on 09/07/2009, -2/+52confused with netbook? Even most netbooks don't sell with 512mb either...
- bdpf, on 09/07/2009, -3/+53XP Pro is still working like a champ. Does all i ask it to without buying new gear.
I'm now recycling other peoples cast offs to make a faster computer for XP Pro. He He.
XP Pro will not die quickly. - diblasio, on 09/07/2009, -4/+47WOULD HAVE
- twiztidsinz, on 09/07/2009, -7/+50And all they had to do was write a better OS...
I loved Vista and used it since the RC, and think most of the negative press was ***** FUD being spread, but have to admit... from a speed standpoint, XP was considerably better.
I've been using Windows 7 since the RC and it's the best of Vista mixed with the best of XP and polished to a shine. - computershack, on 09/07/2009, -0/+41Win98 was a fail, that's why Win98SE was brought out hurredly a year later.
- Wilddigi, on 09/07/2009, -6/+47All the big companies still run WindowsXP and have no problems.
- nullcodes, on 09/07/2009, -31/+69Too bad PC makers are not making 2 GB the minimum RAM on computers. Windows 7 on anything less than 1 GB of RAM is pathetic.
Why are laptops STILL being sold with 512 MB .. Microsoft should check how much RAM is there and prevent Windows 7 from even running on those machines .. it really tarnishes the brand. - MasterEvilAce, on 09/07/2009, -9/+35You're assuming it's only just visually different.
It's more than that. Simple tasks are MUCH more pleasant. For example, if you transfer a bunch of files and folders to a different directory that contains many of the same files/folders or files with the same names, you don't get prompted 50 times during the transfer when there's a conflict. It transfers what it can, and at the end it prompts you about what to do with the remaining files.
There's many more things, but I feel anything I say will be wasted on you. - Gizza, on 09/07/2009, -5/+29I've used Vista since release and I can't understand how people can stick with XP. Vista is certainly no worse than XP, and things like the Start Menu quick search and the redesigned Windows Explorer makes doing pretty much every task much easier.
Windows 7 further improves upon it. - inactive, on 09/07/2009, -3/+27Worst OS ever? Did you start using computers 2 years ago? Read up on Windows ME.
It sucked. - sonofabiscuit, on 09/07/2009, -3/+25Agreed. I decided to change from ol' XP to Windows 7 RC1 the other week and have absolutely no reason to go back. It has a much more user friendly interface, better security, and seems to run better overall.
- aenilius, on 09/07/2009, -1/+22i dunno man, it's best just to ignore me most of the time :)
- FDisk, on 09/07/2009, -1/+2098 was ok 98SE was just better.
- schoate09, on 09/07/2009, -2/+21Are you using Apple computers? How do you feel about them charging you $1400 for a $700 laptop?
- DeadpoolPHP, on 09/07/2009, -16/+35I decided to give up on Windows XP a few months ago, and switch to Ubuntu. I wish I would of done it years ago...
- TheBlueVulcan, on 09/07/2009, -0/+18Dugg for honesty.
- AlienMushroom, on 09/07/2009, -2/+20Want a genuine Windows 7 Pro the legal way?
If you still have your .edu email, pay $15 to sign up for an account at IEEE:
http://www.ieee.org/web/membership/students/branch ...
and you will get a lot of Microsoft software, including Windows 7 Pro, for free.
List of software:

- LostSoul83, on 09/07/2009, -14/+31A surefire way for MS to decreas XP market share: turn off the activation servers! :) I can't want till this happens. Gonna get the popcorn and cola and enjoy the show.
- Chipesh, on 09/07/2009, -1/+18Given that XP is virtually unavailable (yes I know you can get it if you try). Apart from netbooks, how is the market share of XP supposed to rise ?
Most of Vista's share will be down to forced OEM distribution on new machines and this will force 7 adoption even if were a poor system .
Hopefully the dominance of XP is not just a tribute to its worth but also a sign that users are getting wise to needless upgrade cycle which is more about profit than progress.
Statistically irrelevant.
Bob - KMartSheriff, on 09/07/2009, -7/+23What? All tests I've read came to the conclusion that Windows 98 needs about half as much RAM and runs still a little faster than XP. Why would I get a new operating system just for eye candy?
- wallclimber, on 09/07/2009, -14/+30Well that's nice. We shouldn't begrudge Microsoft a little good news from time to time. Especially considering how much money they pay to get it. :o)
- techdever, on 09/07/2009, -2/+18a laptop with 512mb ram in 2009 IS pathetic.
- jakem1, on 09/07/2009, -4/+19Speed measured by benchmarks is misleading. Ordinary day-to-day tasks like window management and general navigation are much easier in Vista and 7 which makes getting things done faster.
It's a little bit silly to argue that XP is better because it only needs £5 worth of RAM as opposed to £20.
Following the logic of your argument, we'd all be better off running Windows 2000 or earlier. - MScrip, on 09/07/2009, -3/+18>> "I don't understand why they didn't try and cash in on XP for a little while longer..."
Why? They cashed in on Vista... and next month they will cash in on Windows 7. Every computer sold on October 22 and for at least the next 3 years will be Windows 7.
Microsoft has no problem selling operating systems... it's kinda what they do! :)
I get what you are saying.... but the only reason XP is still around is for netbooks... and for the handful of people who still *demand* XP. But otherwise, Vista was the OS for retail... and next month it will be Windows 7. - MScrip, on 09/07/2009, -0/+15@aenilius
What? - Ghostalker, on 09/07/2009, -5/+207 is what Vista SHOULD have been. Hopefully the phase XP out slowly, and just delete Vista from existence (like Windows ME and Microsoft Bob).
- MScrip, on 09/07/2009, -2/+17>> "Until then, it's XP for me..."
Just curious... for how long?
Did you ever think you'd be running an OS for a decade or more? - KFantasy017, on 09/07/2009, -7/+21I don't understand why they didn't try and cash in on XP for a little while longer when they realized it still had staying power.
- mariuzi, on 09/07/2009, -1/+15I just realized that I'm like one of those people who used Windows 98 up to 2002. I'm a ludite!
- phpchris, on 09/07/2009, -0/+14lolwat?
- miggyb, on 09/07/2009, -1/+15Maybe "staying far away from" was the wrong way to put it. How about "not willingly paying for"?
- r0bi, on 09/07/2009, -0/+14I don't even have the Internet yet
- mithrasinvictus, on 09/07/2009, -1/+15If they come preinstalled (and pre-paid) on just about anything you buy, people will use them, period.
- inactive, on 09/07/2009, -5/+18How is that possible? Windows is everywhere.
- miggyb, on 09/07/2009, -14/+27Microsoft got blacklisted for me ever since they tried to charge my dad $100+ to upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro. Hope everything goes well for them, but I'm staying far away from their products.
- firefox15, on 09/07/2009, -1/+14Hmm . . . While that's kind of interesting, I notice that you spelled out "Millennium" while most people called it ME, so your table wouldn't be quite right. However, if you want to go the "full name" route and keep "Millennium" you should also fully spell out "eXPerience" which it what XP stands for. Not to be a kill joy. Just saying . . .
- DarkShroud, on 09/07/2009, -8/+21The security and stability of Win7 are far more than just eye candy.
- DeadpoolPHP, on 09/07/2009, -1/+14Windows Vista is the real world?
- JammoBlammo, on 09/07/2009, -5/+18Or because no one makes DIMMs smaller than 512 MB, and most memory is at least dual-channel, requiring paired DIMMs.
- JammoBlammo, on 09/07/2009, -2/+14>netsh int ipv4 add route 10.0.0.0/8 "Interface name" 10.0.0.1
This is how I add routes on all servers including those that are multihomed, and haven't had any issues. You're doing it wrong. - Elranzer, on 09/07/2009, -4/+16No Activation > Activation
