- WoollyMittens, on 11/11/2009, -2/+14Microsoft could have used it without problem if they had just credited the original author and, depending on the license used, provided the source-code somewhere.
Instead they stole it and hoped nobody would notice.
Sadly, many people like you, have a very poor understanding of software licensing and readily regurgitate all the FUD. - monodelasno, on 11/11/2009, -4/+15Of what?
Some blogger got his panties in a twist over possible open-source code use. Microsoft removed distribution of the software to investigate.
Sounds pretty straight forward to me. - mattharvey716, on 11/11/2009, -6/+16good to see someone stood up and message was heard
- hydrodev, on 11/11/2009, -4/+12This will fall off the front page quick like.
- 3242130193, on 11/11/2009, -7/+14No wonder their software doesn't suck anymore! They must be stealing it all from OSS
- falafelkiosken, on 11/11/2009, -0/+5just release your code under GPL, how hard can it be?
- morepowerr, on 11/11/2009, -0/+4Not the first time and it most likely will not be the last.
- fragMasterFlash, on 11/11/2009, -2/+6Why pay for a tool when it only takes a few minutes to create a bootable Win 7 install thumb drive via the command line?
http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-install-windows- ... - spworm, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3what's a command line?
- palehorse864, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2I had issues with Digital River. I finally just downloaded a torrent of an MSDN ISO and modified the EI.CFG from ultimate to professional so I could use my cd-key on it. Microsoft really shouldn't have entrusted a release they wanted to be such a huge change from vista to them. It gave Microsoft a bit of bad press at a time when they really wanted things to look different.
I can't find anything wrong with the OS itself, but I must have blown 60gb of download bandwidth at least trying to get one copy of the files that would work from digitalriver before I finally went to find a clean torrent (used MD5's to make sure it was a working ISO that had originally come from Microsoft). - JohnnySoftware, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2Hey, wasn't there another open source project Microsoft pirated some source code from a year or two ago? They wound up making the program they made that used it open source, that time. They even made a big deal about it at the time.
- mKdiR, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2Or maybe I don't want to blow $2000 on a <$1000 computer, whilst at the same time having the benefit of lower applications and no games.
- jsr2497, on 11/11/2009, -2/+4The tool can still be found on various torrent sites. The .exe is 946kb. The funny thing is that the .iso download being provided by Digital River is corrupted or incomplete most of the time, so users looking to use this tool may have to download the file numerous times.
- mKdiR, on 11/11/2009, -1/+3It makes me laugh when people type Microsoft as M$, don't you realise how much Apple mark-up and overprice their hardware?
- JohnnySoftware, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2Yeah, you would think they would stop complaining about free open source software. They use it so much. They aren't contributing to it much.
- HeizeusX, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2It still sucks, just slightly less.
- Elranzer, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2Unfortunately, they're not. I *wish* Windows was made up of stolen OSS code.
- JohnnySoftware, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2You are completely missing the point.
The allegation is that they stole software to make more money. The people who write GPL software usually do it for free but always do it with stipulation that you give away all source code. Microsoft, of all companies, is fully aware of the GPL and its legal restrictions. They have railed against it to Congress, for heaven's sake!
It is not the first time the company has bee caught with its hands in the cookie jar of someone else's source code, either.
Microsoft has been cutting its work force, especially in the US and UK. They made a lot money off of Windows 7's debut. But the initial sales were being snagged by a number of things. They used this software to solve a business problem that was costing them a lot of money, so they profited from their piracy.
Contrast that with a student in the US who freely stole and gave away songs on the Internet - same medium as Microsoft. He was fined $2 million dollars for making $0. They both did wrong and in very similar ways.
But Microsoft made money off of it. Yet it has not done what the license requires - give away all source code to the programs that incorporated it. They have not offered to pay the programmer(s) who wrote the code or their organization(s) as compensation, either. That is what is objectionable. Even more so because Microsoft has sued companies and entire cities when they could not produce as many sales receipts as the number of MS-Windows licensees.
If Microsoft wants to operate in a freeware model then they should stop charging for their software and suing over it. In their current model, sell or sue - they should just abide by the GPL/law. - zoomaKabu, on 11/13/2009, -0/+1Like I said, it can't be used for anything useful.
- WoollyMittens, on 11/11/2009, -2/+3The tool didn't cost money, as far as I know.
- LostSoul83, on 11/11/2009, -1/+2"so Open-source code can't be swooped up and made proprietary? Okay then."
Fixed that for ya.
If an author wrote something and released the code to society so that we would all have it to translate/recompile to use on other platforms, what gives a corporation the right to stomp on this? - ObeseSnake, on 11/11/2009, -1/+2Might be a genuine mistake but MS has been pretty vocal about how it feels that open-source software is violating hundreds of Microsoft patents.
- spworm, on 11/11/2009, -1/+1You're just jealous and angry because you're too poor to buy an apple.
- Twinnie, on 11/11/2009, -4/+3Sounds like a genuine mistake, no need to get bitchy. MS make a good tool in the interest of making their customers lives easier but some people still hate them for it. If any kind of appeasement was called for it'd be best to try and get something useful rather than just trying to kick up a big fuss about it, but I've got a feeling the FOSS scene is just gonna take the opportunity to look like a bunch of smug bastards (again).
- teef55uk, on 11/11/2009, -6/+3I just used this yesterday. Looks like I got it just in time!
- WafflesID, on 11/11/2009, -6/+2***** bloggers.
Oh well, I knew I bought that slim USB dvd drive for something. - spworm, on 11/11/2009, -7/+2Apple would never do anything like this.
Stupid M$. - taifon, on 11/11/2009, -11/+0Microsoft already tired of her windows 7
- UmarSajid, on 11/11/2009, -20/+8Win 7! ftw
- zoomaKabu, on 11/11/2009, -17/+5So open source code can't be used for anything useful? OK then.
- Zylog, on 11/11/2009, -21/+3M$ needs to back off
