- Brewdinky, on 09/02/2009, -1/+54If you're a college student you may be able to receive a full free copy of the Windows 7 RTM through Microsofts MSDNAA program
http://www.msdnaa.net/search/schoolsearch.aspx - pak314, on 09/02/2009, -4/+49"At the 90-day mark, the trial automatically, and without warning, shuts down the PC every hour of operation." ... so they are bringing back that feature from Windows 95.
- andrejhoward, on 09/02/2009, -2/+29Yeah you're right, they're horrible for letting people try their product.
Hey did Apple offer a Snow Leopard or a Leopard trial??? No ... OK just checking
But keep hating on Microsoft for offering a trial ... douchebag - jpjandrade, on 09/02/2009, -2/+28Pirate Bay offered me a RTM version with no time limit. Best trial ever.
- DjOverEZ, on 09/02/2009, -1/+27Only on Digg can Microsoft offer a free trial of their latest operating system and still get ***** on.
- TheRipper, on 09/02/2009, -2/+24It's a trial. So 90 days is fair.
What did you expect ? A 1 year trial ? If you can't make you're mind after 90 days of testing, just stick with your current setup. - Rotzooi, on 09/02/2009, -1/+15Protip: Remove the file ei.cfg from the .iso before you burn it.
I could say I did that because I found the file suspicious, but really, it's because this allowed me to choose which W7 flavor I wanted to install. (Home Premium, Ultimate, etc) - Rev0lver, on 09/02/2009, -2/+16I ran Vista on 4GB and a Q6600 simply flawlessly and have been since release. None of this "slowness" ***** people seem to espouse so readily. It's even faster on W7, yes, but if you don't have the RAM Vista needed to give you good performance [namely with SuperFetch], then you really wont have much improvement in Windows 7.
@Demoni
I've been working with computers for well over 15 years. I absolutely know what I'm talking about. Vista has always been a good operating system. Only issues Vista had at release was a lack of much driver support out of the gate. And honestly, I have a hard time having much sympathy for a person who cant get his 10 year old printer to work on a brand new, state of the art operating system. - roxgod666, on 09/02/2009, -0/+10The beta did this after expiration.
- ErrorLoading, on 09/02/2009, -0/+9Yes, you can.
I also have a horse and buggy, a washboard, and sod house for sale if you're interested in antiques.
XP is nearly 10 years old people. Jesus, move on. - d0nbaker, on 09/02/2009, -1/+10Are you new to the internet???
- ludz, on 09/02/2009, -1/+10From what I understand, for most colleges with MSDNAA, it's the job of the person in charge of MSDNAA at the college to make the downloads available. So if you have someone that doesn't update it often, you might not have it yet.
- Elranzer, on 09/02/2009, -0/+9Duh. This is in response to all of those Windows 7 RTM torrents being out there, when Microsoft wasn't offering it publicly but they were with the Betas. The torrent versions sometimes have little "extras" that Microsoft doesn't want spread around to those testing them, like disabling activation.
- Kamino, on 09/02/2009, -1/+9Clever. I bet they rather see 'IT pros' getting it this way than the 'less legal' way. With DRM being common good nowadays, it isn't surprising they are taking the risk. Sure, it might be patched but that might eliminate updates.. and they are needed as to date no Windows RTM has been perfect. (XP with insecure IE6, Vista with slow IO)
- fjsferreira, on 09/02/2009, -2/+10What? I'm using the same exact machine and it feels like day and night. windows 7 is even faster than xp in everything except maybe games, wich i don't care.
- Rev0lver, on 09/02/2009, -7/+14Vista's only slow if you're running an ancient machine. And if you're getting that performance from Vista, 7 wont be any better for you.
- lolupissed, on 09/02/2009, -0/+7I joined ACM.org as a student (they don't verify if you are a student, I am not), it came out to like $19.99. I got 4 windows 7 RTM product keys. Joining acm.org gives you msdnaa access, you also get copies of windows xp and windows 2008 server.
- Elranzer, on 09/02/2009, -4/+11ThePirateBay isn't the only tracker in the world you know (nor the best one).
- nicc, on 09/02/2009, -0/+7or....
join IEEE under their student section (you dont have to enter a school name or student id, etc) and get pretty much any MS software, including 7 Pro, for the membership fee of $30
it worked for me last week. - hairysandwich, on 09/02/2009, -1/+7Actually Slashdot is probably worse.
- Jarasmen, on 09/02/2009, -2/+8@wshs: Windows 7 doesn't format during install. Just use 7, I don't see any point to use Vista anymore - maybe XP if you've got really old hardware.
Also, if someone installs an OS trial they should acknowledge the fact, that either they like it and buy/crack it, or they'll have to reinstall yet again. Sheesh, it's like buying a bucket of paint and being angry at the paint factory that you have to paint the house... - Rev0lver, on 09/02/2009, -0/+6@staticneuron
You're absolutely right, and I should have been a bit more clear: Windows 7 does have lower system requirements due to more optimized coding, and can accomplish more with less...But if Vista is moving "slower than [your] dead granma," then the problem is NOT with Vista, but with your computer. Saying Windows 7 is the solution to it is basically putting a band-aid on an axe wound. - SirZRX, on 09/02/2009, -1/+7try to buy a new computer the next time
- Twinnie, on 09/02/2009, -0/+5Maybe I'm alone here. I'm actually planning on buying Home Premium when it comes out, installing it, and not worrying about constantly cracking various parts of the most important piece of software on my system.
- mm63, on 09/02/2009, -0/+4if you are already a student at any school listed in the MSDNAA, you can get a free copy of 7 pro too. No need to join any third party organization.
- gordigor, on 09/02/2009, -0/+4you rock.
- rkthoadan, on 09/02/2009, -0/+4Does anyone know if there is a way to update the RC to RTM without a re-install?
- TheRipper, on 09/02/2009, -1/+4It's a t-r-i-a-l. trial !!! What do you expect ?
Like many software out there with a trial period, it stops working when the trial delay is over. - kaniz, on 09/02/2009, -0/+3@wshs: Then install the trial on a separate drive/partition and give it a run there.
I'm on the fence about Win7 - never bothered to get in with the Betas, but I may give the trial a spin - just wont be a spin onto of my existing OS until I know I'm going to make the commitment or not to the full OS. - TheRipper, on 09/02/2009, -0/+390 days may seems short. However, having the chance to use the RTM release for 90 days is a good thing. 90 days is enough to make it's own mind on the new Windows release.
After 90 days, if you think it's nice, just buy it. If not, just keep your current setup. - lolupissed, on 09/03/2009, -0/+3It works, it took 2 days before I got accepted for MSDNAA but I did this on a Saturday. I have Windows 7 installed right now and running good. You get 4 keys (32 bit, 64 bit, french 32, and french 64) but all cd keys are interchangeable with all versions (For instance a 32 bit french cd key works fine for 64 bit english).
- Heiminator, on 09/02/2009, -0/+3good tip,thanks!
- Jarasmen, on 09/02/2009, -0/+3http://zombo.com
Just wait for the link to show up after the intro. - Twinnie, on 09/02/2009, -0/+3Great, except this'll be picked up by the activation servers when you try to activate a version of W7 which is a different version than the key is for.
- Lane, on 09/02/2009, -0/+2For us poor, ignorant, digg using, college students will someone explain how to obtain the credentials to create an account?
- Denominator88, on 09/02/2009, -0/+2Oops, thought you could, my bad. You need to edit a file on the DVD first.
http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-upgrade-windows- ...
Then you can run the upgrade option. - demonicume, on 09/03/2009, -0/+2"without warning"
thats your warning. maybe it should remind you every day for 90 days?
--edit--
oops, wrong reply - mclewell, on 09/02/2009, -0/+2http://windows7news.com/2009/04/27/upgrading-from- ...
However this is highly not recommended for mission critical systems. - danrien, on 09/02/2009, -1/+3i got it at my university for free already.
- blackraven1425, on 09/02/2009, -0/+2Useless if you forget to consider that IT people get a month head start on everyone, so they have some semblance of an idea how to troubleshoot and where options are on it. This is especially important since it's largely a UI overhaul.
- noumuon, on 09/03/2009, -0/+2xp is definitely broke.
- ThanatosST, on 09/02/2009, -1/+3I love you.
But why the hell does the business and applied sciences departments at CU get it, but not the engineering department? WTF CU? - bbeep, on 09/03/2009, -0/+2Replying to save comment. Not sure if it works, but if it does that's sick!
- TheChauvinist, on 09/02/2009, -1/+3I don't have a Login with them, although i did go to UC Berkeley.
- Akira44, on 09/02/2009, -0/+2If you don't think XP is broke and are happy with it... why are you reading/posting about Win 7??? What difference does it make to you what MS do with their time if you've already got an OS that does everything you need?
- AlienMushroom, on 09/02/2009, -0/+2"The lower price will be in effect until Feb. 28, 2009."
computerworld.com is living backwards in times. - biohazzard56, on 09/02/2009, -0/+2Thanks for the heads up, your my hero for today.
- jesburger, on 09/02/2009, -0/+2I just downloaded this, to be able to upgrade from windows 7 beta, you need to go into regedit, to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version and change editionID to enterprise (instead of ultimate)
I also did the cversion.ini (but that alone didn't work for upgrade) - Super6, on 09/02/2009, -1/+2UCF only has MSDN for 2 majors out of about 100, and I'm not in either.
- madmobmike, on 09/03/2009, -0/+1I rarely ever sign into Digg, but I had to sign in just to thank you. I now have a x64 and x86 legit copy of Win 7 pro :) Thanks!
If people are curious about MSDNAA, the school pays a bunch of money to MS and we get lots of "free" (I'm sure we pay for it) legit product keys and software. -
