- e03179, on 11/21/2008, -4/+64$15 a month gets you unlimited downloads. You can keep those as long as you keep paying $15 a month. That's been the plan.
With the new plan you get to keep 10 songs per month and add them to your permanent collection. You won't have to keep paying $15 a month to be able to to play those songs. - dylio, on 11/21/2008, -1/+49*loves his Zune too*
- KayIslandDrunk, on 11/21/2008, -1/+36I can't quite put my finger on it but I swear I read that somewhere before...
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -5/+37*makes love to his Zune*
- redoctane, on 11/21/2008, -0/+29It's not like Itunes is any better.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+22Love my zune, love the software and the subscription already was the best value just got even better.
- mbraynard, on 11/21/2008, -1/+21But the rental fee is so ..... minimal.
How long does it take you to download everything you want every month, rip all the stuff you want, and then organize it and install it on all the computers you are using.
How can that time possibly be worth less than $15. Oh - and subtract from that amount whatever you'd be paying for the tracks on Itunes. So 10 tracks a month... all that time you spend is worth less than $5 a month? - FredFredrickson, on 11/21/2008, -2/+21I'm definitely going to consider replacing my iPod with a Zune when it eventually breaks.
- Technopundit, on 11/21/2008, -8/+23Not a bad idea. Not gonna buy it, but it's not a bad idea.
- humanawho, on 11/21/2008, -0/+15Yes but he cracked the code of those tricky paragraph things and had to share his success
- Zalyster, on 11/21/2008, -0/+15rtfa
- Namco, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1430GB Brown Zune, love it. Would buy again!! A+++++++
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+14wtf dude grow a pair and get your ***** back.
- Twiggy794, on 11/21/2008, -0/+14If the tracks are DRM-free on the Zune store then they're DRM-free when you keep them. They said the other day that 90% of the Zune store is DRM-free mp3's now.
- Carrot1991, on 11/21/2008, -1/+15I'm British and love the Zune I ordered. It feels so unique over here compared to the flurries of I-Pods. I wish I could at least access the marketplace though.
- jasmus, on 11/21/2008, -1/+14Just wish I could use one of the damn things to see if I like it better than an iPod. Right now, I don't think there is really a good alternative to an iPod available to me (in Australia). I do like iPods, but I wouldn't mind some competition.
- hipnotyq, on 11/21/2008, -0/+12*wishes that MS would extend subscription and marketplace to Canada but otherwise loves the Zune*
- FredFredrickson, on 11/21/2008, -0/+12Who cares how they convinced the music industry to go along with it? It sounds like a pretty sweet deal, and that's really all that matters.
- disillusioned, on 11/21/2008, -0/+10Version 3 is one of the better pieces of marketplace software I've used. The interface is slick and intuitive, the syncing is flawless and it's really a pleasure to use. Rhapsody's software sucks, but Zune's is just a nice break from that.
- MillionsLivio, on 11/21/2008, -1/+10It's not, as a former iPod owner I absolutely love my Zune 80. You can look up videos of the interface and get a feeling for it. Some people like to bash the Zune but generally they have never used one. Everyone I've let try mine out loves it, several even bought one afterwards and sold their iPods.
- afidler, on 11/21/2008, -0/+990% of songs on Marketplace are drm-free, so odds are they are (and they are noted as drm-free or not before you buy). So, if you do get a drm-free track then you can do whatever you want with it.
- TheXeno, on 11/22/2008, -1/+10The MP3 DRM free files are 320 kbps btw
- enotswhat, on 11/21/2008, -1/+10watches his ex-girl love his Zune
is now Zuneless - AboveandBeyond, on 11/21/2008, -0/+9DIGG: Simple English Edition.
- korbink, on 11/21/2008, -3/+11You mean the 5 people that don't mindlessly follow poppy trends?
- KayIslandDrunk, on 11/21/2008, -1/+9Me too. I've been thinking of getting rid of my nano and getting an 8 gig zune. Right now my first gen 30 gig is my player of choice at work and my nano for working out. This deal might get me to go back to the ZunePass which I used to love until I bought an ipod.
- TotalHalibut, on 11/21/2008, -16/+24Well... that's something new. Still not a big fan of renting music though.
- KayIslandDrunk, on 11/21/2008, -0/+8The latest version (3) is greatly improved. Granted it's still not perfect, but they've made huge strides in making it better.
- PoopOnPaul, on 11/21/2008, -0/+8You should. Good music is worth buying, and being a musician is a job. If no one buys the product, you don't get paid. Contrary to what many music pirates (not to say I never pirate) convince themselves, most professional musicians aren't rich idiots with mansions that appear on MTV Cribs. Many of them are even independent, meaning the argument about bands getting hardly anything from record sales doesn't apply. But even for bands that aren't independent, they may not see a lot of direct profit from record sales, but if there are no record sales, they won't continue to be able to make money as a musician.
Plus, there's always the fact that the music industry is a business meant to make money, and if most of the people buying music are preteens who listen to pop stars and all the crappy mainstream bands on the radio, then you can hardly blame the record companies for continuing to promote that crap. Basically, the record companies will promote the bands that are making them money. If no one buys good music, it won't get support from the industry.
I do think "pirating" has its place, especially for music discovery and exploration (one of my favorite bands was independent but ended up with a nationwide fan base, including places the band had never even been, due to people sharing their music on Napster, and became one of the most successful independent bands ever), but if music is good, it's worth buying. - info101, on 11/21/2008, -0/+7Check out 3.1, they included a ton of fixes in it, the software is definitely getting better, I would know, I test it
- 7duidotcom, on 11/21/2008, -11/+18It is interesting. It may be in competition with Ipod and Apple.
- roebeet, on 11/21/2008, -2/+9See what happens when Microsoft is the underdog? Competition is good for everybody.
- bittdude, on 11/21/2008, -0/+7I'm still waiting for it to become available in Canada...
- jbroderick, on 11/21/2008, -3/+10This makes perfect sense to me, i love listening to new music of all types and if i do like the artists alot i will buy the full album. By this new model it will save me lots of coin rather then buying new music to never listen to again. thanks MS.
- korbink, on 11/21/2008, -0/+7You also have no DRM on the songs that you own, so you can burn them to a CD or whatever else you want to do with them.
- doshindude, on 11/22/2008, -0/+680GB Zune FTW!
- djgreedo, on 11/22/2008, -0/+6I have a Zune in Australia and can use all features except for the Zune Pass by doing the following:
1) Tie a US Hotmail account/Windows Live account to your Zune login (i.e. sign up for Hotmail saying you are American - you may need a proxy, I can't remember). Then open a (new) Zune account using that email account.
2) Have a search around Zune sites for the Zune International Hack. It's a tiny little app that makes the Zune software think you're American.
3) If you want to buy music from the Zune Marketplace there are a few places that sell US Microsoft points. You pay (usually Paypal) and they send you the code via email to redeem your points to your account. I have bought points from http://www.microsoftpointsxbox.com/faq.php and was able to buy music.
The above steps let you use your Zune Card, view and buy from the marketplace (both on the device and on the PC).
I believe the Zune Pass requires a credit card with a US address. - TriZz, on 11/21/2008, -2/+8I'd actually consider a Zune if they opened it up to OS X users.
- MackMarvel, on 11/22/2008, -0/+6You don't need a Zune to do this.
- awesometastic1, on 11/21/2008, -3/+8After getting fed up with my iPods always breaking if i looked at them wrong, I got a first generation zune right when it came out. I've dropped it, bashed it with no protection right on the screen against a table, and pretty much used it most everyday since i got it. Despite this, not a scratch on it. It works great still after what, 3 years?? Still going strong, still with excellent battery life.
I also like how Microsoft gives all the old players the new software updates every time they come out instead of making people buy a new zune to get the new features like a certain "fruit" company has a habit of doing with their fragile products. - Hoogs, on 11/21/2008, -1/+6Heck, it would be worth it to get one just so you don't look like all the iBots walking around.
- etx313, on 11/21/2008, -1/+6Same here.
- 97a6, on 11/21/2008, -0/+5I think its a cool idea. I always thought about doing a subscription plan but never liked the idea of my music disappearing if i didn't keep paying. This way I feel like I'm actually getting something out of it instead of just renting music.
- jonglebeats, on 11/21/2008, -0/+5In Windows go to "Regional and Language Options" then the "Location" tab and change to United States. BAM! marketplace, I would assume you can buy from it but haven't tried.
- tigertee, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4I really want to get a zune, I just hope they make zune pass available in Canada!
- KayIslandDrunk, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4Exactly, one of my hardest decisions was ditching the Zune Pass and watch 1/4 of my library disappear. With this option I'm seriously thinking about starting it back up again.
- iofthestorm, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4*Wishes he had a Zune, but realizes that he doesn't really listen to enough music to make it worth it anyway. Still wants one*
